I would have to say that ths is probably the closest to authentic you can get for a non authentic Japanese restaurant. I wouldn't say this is an izakaya though. The food is fresh and delicious. I can tell there is a lot of care in the preparation. The Kamikaze roll is to die for, the combination of of ally the ingrdients go so well together and I love the fact that they roast the sesame seeds- it really makes a difference in the taste. The owner lady is nice but the only thing is that the place is quite small and sometimes gets quite loud with groups of people playing drinking games and being rowdy. One of our favorite late night spots for great sushi.
Do not go here!!!!! My family was harassed by the owner for having a groupon. The over all attitude was SO BAD that we walked out . First time I've ever walked out of any establishment with my wife and 3 kids. Terrible way of doing business, at one point she said that there are no tables for 5 people!
It was a warm sunny Saturday so we decided to drive down to Steveston for a walk and a fish & chips lunch at the docks. Of course I first perused the Dinehere reviews for F&C in Steveston and saw middlin' to good reviews for Pajos so we aimed our sights at their wharf-side location. It was just before noon and there was no line-up to order so it took about 15 minutes to get our order of two large cod F&C and a bottled water ($32). The cone-cup dishes were novel and would be a challenge to eat from if you couldn't find space at one of their picnic tables with special holes in them for the cups, but we found a nice table up on the dock in the sun. Tartar sauce, lemon wedges and ketchup could all be gathered at the take-out counter and there were vinegars and salt on the tables.
Wife and I were very impressed with the quality of the food. The cod fish was deliciously moist and lightly battered in an almost tempura style batter, very crispy without being oily. The chips were double fried, crispy on the outside and fluffy potato goodness inside. The condiments weren't even necessary, we enjoyed the fish and chips so much. I was starting to get a little jealous at my wife's pleasurable moans. It was truly just the way F&C are supposed to be. We would have had seconds; our mouths said yes but our tummies said no friggin' way. Combined with the sun and location, we both agreed they were the best we've had since York, England a dozen years ago. The place was starting to get busy as we left so we were glad to have stopped in a bit early. We'll definitely go back soon.
I think one reason F&C places like Pajos and others can have such mixed reviews is traffic volumes. If you go when they are very busy (i.e. big line-ups), I think they have problems keeping their oil temperatures hot enough while cooking order after order, and that leads to a soggy, oily, not so crispy product. If you go before the big lunch rush like we did, you'll get peak quality. Makes a big difference.
Have ordered from this place before. Last night was told it would be rfeady in 10 to 15 min. When my daughter arrived to pick the food on her way home from work she had to wait another 40 MINUTES so it was an hour after I placed the order. Apparently only 2 people working, but then give a reasaonable estimate of time!!. Also the Panang curry was much blander than usual, the papaya salad way too sour and the mixed vegies so so.
No offer of anything to compensate for the ridiculous wait.
Will NOT be recommending this place to anyone anymore.

Didn't know until we sat down it was an AYCE restaurant. Was a bit hesitant but after taking a look on the menu, it seems to be a cut above your normal AYCE Japanese restos. They have about 5-6 sashimi choices including wild sockeye and Toro (Tuna). The rolls were not packed full of rice with the Negitoro and chopped scallop rolls being very good. The wait staff were available quickly and the food came out at a good pace. The hot food were pretty good especially the tempua and terriyaki. The only suggestion would be to indicate how many pieces per order so customers can adjust their orders. Would come back if I did AYCE more often, dinner was $22 per person which is pretty standard.
Craving beef ribs last night and never been to thie place decided to give it a try. Stevenston is a far drive from where I live and we got there at 630. There was a sign that said they have a private party at last order will be taken at 7. Private party on a Saturday horrible business decision in my opinion. When I asked for seating for two they said the only thing available was outside even though there were seats inside. I guess they were saving them for the private party. Once I sat outside it was cold because you are close to the water. My friend started with an order of chili, he order the platter with pulled pork with pork ribs I order the beef ribs.
His chili arrived first with a piece of corn bread. My friend let me try it, the chili was really bad the corn bread was nice and warm. Finally 45 minutes after order our main course came. The beef ribs portion was huge I had it with corn bread and fries. I tryed my fries pulled pork and ribs and it was very very dry not tender at all. I only ate half of one of my beef ribs but I was too cold and asked if I could take it to go. The fries were cold and the corn bread was as well. When I got home all I found in the bad was three ribs. What happens to the fries, the corn bread and the other half rib I barely touched. I was quite disappionted. You put us outside with the plastic table and chair and now you stiff me on what I ordered. If it was good I would say ok but I willl never return there again. Service was slow food was slow and food was cold. Barbecue sauce is average at best and the chili is worse than having it in a can. The corn bread is good too bad they decided not to pack it for me. Thank goodness I didnt overtip because waiting over 45 minutes, sitting in the cold I wasnt impressed.
If you live close you may want to try it but dont go out of your way to try it.
Living in Richmond we have been meaning to try the Hog Shack for some time now. So a visit by out of town guests with a fondness for ribs presented the perfect opportunity.
Not wanting to disappoint our guests we took the precaution of making a 7pm reservation for our party of four. Once seated we were somewhat surprised and little disappointed to be told that such bbq staples as the baby back ribs and corn bread were sold out so early in the evening. Nevertheless with the wide range of choice on the menu this was not too much of a problem and we had little difficulty deciding on two portions of beef ribs, a smoked brisket platter and a burger.
Thirty minutes after ordering with no sign of any food my patience was starting to wear a little thin. Attempts to try and catch our server's eye as she attended to neighbouring tables were fruitless. Her avoidance skills were par excellence. After 15 minutes of this cat and mouse game I dispatched the busboy to the kitchen to find out when we could expect our meal. He returned with the server who informed us that it would be another 10 minutes. An HOUR LONG wait for food is completely unacceptable. At the very least one would expect the restaurant staff to have the courtesy to pre-warn one or apologise for the unexpectedly long delay.
When the food eventually arrived it was a complete disappointment.
The "texas toast" that accompanied my brisket platter turned out to be a slice of pre-packaged supermarket brown bread served dry, slightly stale and not toasted. The brisket itself was dry and compact, difficult to chew and other than the dollop of bbq sauce spooned over it completely lacking in flavour. The coleslaw had an unpleasant sour taste that did not appeal to my taste buds, two mouthfuls were all that I could manage.
The beef ribs as ordered by my partner were the better choice, but at best could only be described as mediocre. Her accompanying side order of yam fries were limp and greasy and she also found the coleslaw not to her taste. Our hamburger eating guest was non-committal, merely describing his meal as "ok".
I really wanted to like the Hog Shack. Ever since the demise of "Dem Bones" we have been searching for a place to satisfy our occasional carnivore cravings for ribs. But with appalling service and mediocre to poor food quality, the Hog Shack is not it.
Today is my 11 months with my girlfriend and we decided to give this restaurant a visit. Right when we got in, we were greeted nicely and they gave us adequate amount of time to choose which menu to go with. We end up choosing the deluxe menu, strictly because there was a much larger selection of sashimi/meat. Speaking the truth, it was a little pricey for 1 person to start, but my baby and I was craving for some sushi tonight; and that’s all it matter.
Note: the * are the items that are at limited quantity/ we asked the server if it will be available tonight before getting started as I assumed these are the star items of the menu and they will most definitely give off a “wow” impression. Confirmed by the server, we insisted to try, otherwise we wouldn’t have chosen the deluxe.
We ordered the sashimi to start. Tai, salmon, sockeye, geoduck*, sweet prawns*, tuna, surf clams, black peppered tuna, and beef tataki. Also, the legendary ebi sunomono to get me and my girlfriend' appetite started.
The ebi sunomono was “meh”. I’ve had better for sure. It was bland, too much overcooked noodles, in a bland vinegar dressing.
The food came shortly, immediately I realized the fish seemed very fresh, nice texture, cold enough but not frozen. It tasted really good, the geoduck was crunchy (like pig ear-like texture), but most of the pieces were cut too small to actually taste the sweetness of the geoduck. After a while, the geoduck tasted really nothing but fishy-taste, not the type of “sashimi geoduck” I’ve had at a Chinese restaurant. I was fairly disappointed by the geoduck, because that was one of the main dishes that made me go with the deluxe menu. The sweet prawns were nothing more than just some normal shrimps, nothing special about it, did not taste anything special. The tai sashimi, was a little different from what I usually see. Other places i've had them they looked really white and thinly sliced, but the ones that was served had hints of red and brownish on it. With that said, it still tasted pretty good to me, but my gf said it tasted a little fishy.
I ended up ordering, more beef tataki because it "Wow" me. It was sliced really thin, and it was nicely flavored. It melts in your mouth, it tasted good, but I suggest you ordering 30slices, because it actually taste that good, and they are thinly sliced, so not a lot of meat.
The blackpepper tuna tasted delicious, seared on the outside, raw on the inside, seasoned with black pepper. Isn't it funny how food can taste so much better with pepper? And that brings a question, how come I dont see alot of pepper used in japanese cuisine?
My second batch, I got the Deepfried scallops, tempura, newyork steak on skewer, oyster motoyaki, chicken wings, black cod, halibut.
Im not sure if the scallops are real scallops or the imitation crab-type of of meat. It just didn’t taste like a scallop or had no real flavour to it but deep fried. Tempura was mediocre, a lot of batter on it. New York steak on skewer was not bad, it tasted good, nicely cooked, definitely a flavour punch in this one. Oyster motoyaki and chicken wings, black cod, and halibut all disappointed gravely. Usually the oyster and the chicken wings should be atleast mediocre at any AYCE sushi restaurant, but all I can tell you is, I’ve never tasted a chicken wing as bland as the one I had tonight. I thought the black cod and halibut would give me a kick in flavour, but it was just overcooked/dry. Nothing special about those 2 dishes… but such a shame, because I’ve actually had “black cod, and halibut” before. It’s a shame how they gave those 2 delicious fish a bad taste.
This is one the first AYCE restaurant I’ve been to, that actually lets you order your “all you can eat food without staring you down” when you requests to order more.
Despite the fact, I am not sure if it’s because we ordered the “deluxe menu” and they treat us “extra” polite and always checked up on us by refilling our tea cups. However, based on how much it costs per person, I would be expecting a hell of a meal, and I’d certainly not leave until I’m satisfied. I do wonder, would they treat us the same, if we just went with the basic dinner menu, and mass ordered food, like how i always do. : D
My gf and I really liked the lay out of the restaurant, a tleast for an AYCE. It didn't feel OVERLY PACKED, like Ninkazu sushi. It felt like i can TALK to my GF, we had a nice table, and i was not once distracted by the manager sprinting around the dining room. ( if you've been to Ninkazu you know what i mean).
Overall, I do not think I will return to Richmond Sushi for the deluxe menu, based on the $$$ and the quality of the food. The normal dinner menu, has only salmon and tuna sashimi, and all these rice rolls/cones. I don’t know about you guys, but I do not go to ACYE sushi to eat rice. Aside from the deluxe menu, which is quite expensive, I don’t see what I like about this restaurant that I will return. As title say, get "Deluxe Menu, or Just go Home."
Crap. Absolute crap. So crappy that I'm surprised this restaurant has repeat customers. I struggled to eat seventy percent of the food. The sushi tasted like bits of roasted cardboard had been inserted into the rice. The chicken was the only thing that tasted halfway descent. (Not completely descent, mind you, but halfway descent). I can't believe I paid 18 dollars for that.
On a side note, the service wasn't horrible. Not stellar, or even good, but not horrible either. But, I'd rather have poor service, rather than poor food.
"Hey, you owe me tips" - is pretty much what I got when my party stood up to leave.
While there is an unsaid rule to tip a certain amount, never would I expect to be confronted with this as if we OWED them tips. That not paying the amount they had in mind, was as bad as a "dine and dash".
Server girl #2 attempted to justify this by saying that all restaurants had a minimum tipping amount. I countered with "While we'll be paying said amount tonight, I just wanted to let you know that we are not legally required to pay that" She then brings up the "other restaurants again". I'm aggravated by this point, and my party needed to get going before the night got too late. So I said again, "We are obligated to pay for the amount listed on the bill for the food we ordered, but beyond that we are not LEGALLY required to pay anything more. There is no LAW for this."
Funny thing is, as we turned to leave, server girl #2 then says that we could take back that amount.
Honestly, I will never return to this place. Give me free drinks and I still would go some place else. Never again to a place where the server thinks I OWE them tips and demands it from me.
My wife and I have eaten here twice and won't be returning. The mediocre food is just not worth the abysmal service. Our previous dining experience here was so-so. After a half hour wait for our food, we had to very carefully pick through a chicken dish that was filled with small, sharp bone fragments. It appeared to us that the chicken had been randomly chopped into small pieces with a blunt cleaver before cooking. Definitely not a safe dish to feed a young child, but tasty enough if you could handle the jagged bones. Last night, we returned because this place is relatively close to our residence. We were seated at a smallish white plastic table with flip-up wings; the sort of furniture that people put by the side of the road with a 'Free' sign taped to it. After a short period, the waitress who had seated us returned to our table and informed us that she had made a mistake and another party would need our table in 15 minutes. She pointed to a slightly smaller table where the other diners appeared to have just started their meal and told us that we could have their table when they left. This conversation was in Mandarin, which I don't speak (my wife does). The waitress/hostess then went to clean up another vacant booth without giving us menus. My wife then approached her and asked "Are we supposed to vacate that table?" and was told "Yes, Sorry". So went to a different restaurant (there's no shortage in Richmond). We had a similar experience with this restaurant a few months ago, when they wouldn't give us an empty booth that could seat 4, presumably because there was only the two of us (again, we left). They don't put Reserved signs on their empty tables so we can't tell if this restaurant has something against mixed-race couples, or they just don't like serving groups of less than four people. I will say that the food is relatively cheap for the large portions, if you don't mind running the risk of an emergency tracheotomy.
We decided the restaurant after 2 years and were totally disappointed. As a former Malaysian, there are dishes that cannot be imitated and if it's not right don't try making it. The beef rendang is suppose to be dry cooked beef brisket with coconut and curry spices, we got a soupy beef curry with vegetables. The Hokkien noodles is very specific and should be thick noodles fried in a dark soya sauce(special sauce from Malaysia), and we got a spaghetti noodle that was very spicy, definitely not the real dish. The satay was decent but pricey and sambal bean was good, the green curry basil rice was over spiced. I would not recommend the restaurant.
I had never really had pho that I didn't like ... until I came to this place.
I went here with my boyfriend. The place was relatively clean, but my gripe is with the service. I understand that you generally should not look for spectacular service at a pho place, but this place was exceptionally bad. The waitresses were not only rude but seemed unable to comprehend my order despite repeating it a few times. We ordered the following: small pho with round eye steak, chicken balls, and beef tendon; spring rolls; beef brisket noodle soup; and chicken skewers.
When they brought the pho, my first thought was, "Where is the round eye steak?" Well, turns out it's all balled up at the bottom and had been served already over-cooked. The soup was sorely lacking in taste -- it was like salty water, with no other flavours to recommend it, a far cry from the typically flavourful pho soup. The chicken balls were the cheap kind. Tasteless, with a stringy kind of texture, and made of questionable material. The tendon came with a lot of fat and tasted greasy. The only thing worth eating was the pho noodles themselves, which were still stuck together.
The spring rolls would have tasted pretty good if not the fact that they had a distinctly soapy aftertaste. I don't know if they didn't wash their sauce bowls or pans properly, or if they had gotten soap into the food, but it was extremely unpleasant. My boyfriend's soup noodles were mediocre, with the beef being too dry, lean, and stringy. At this point the only thing that we thought tasted somewhat good was the chicken skewers -- but then I found a hair on them.
It is apparent that the staff at this restaurant care little about the customers and put no effort into their work. The apathy really shows. The terrible service combined with lackluster food really made me remember this place as a restaurant to which I will not return.
This place has THE BEST vermicelli rice bowls in Richmond at a very reasonable price. Their shrimp spring rolls are very good too. I've been to this restaurant four times now - twice for lunch and twice for dinner. The service the first three times were okay the first time, good the second time and outstanding the third time. Unfortunately, the fourth time for dinner was the worst service I've experienced at a restaurant in a very long time. It wasn't very busy and I entered as a single diner. Was pretty much ignored after placing my order but the server lady was friendly to the few other diners in the restaurant. Had to go up to the counter to ask for eating untensils even though it was obvious when she delivered the food that I didn't have anything but a cup of tea in front of me - "oh, i didn't give to you?" and tossed chopsticks, spoon and napkin on the counter. Never came to ask how things were which was done the first three times. Couldn't wave her down to get the check even though by this time there was only one other couple and another single diner in the place so had to go up to the counter and had one of the strangest/rudest experiences ever. She never looked at me or spoke a word to me, just grabbed the check from the stack and plopped it on the counter and then took my money and dropped the change on a tray and started futzing around with stuff behind the counter. Not one word even after I took the change and left a tip on the tray. This has never happened to me before, not even in those mom/pop chinese restaurants notorious for their poor service - this tops it all! I've been recommending this restaurant to others but not any more. Too bad, because their food was really good.
We've been here quite a few times, the last for a family dinner after a marathon swim recently. When we got in we almost couldn't get a table (it was a Saturday) because most of the place was reserved and we had a group of 7. The place was basically empty though, and if I wasn't so hungry and hadn't driven from Surrey (and dragged the family out) I would have left. Yeah, I understand reso's probably make or break a restaurant like this but if it's empty and we can't get a table? You're doing too many resos. Anyway, luckily the manager fit us in, but gave us a time limit (2.5 hours, which was fine....)
The food was great, they brought us almost all of the dishes ordered (which is a rarity for ayce). Our waters and tea are refilled OFTEN, the dishes cleaned up often, and we hardly had to ASK for anything. Worth the drive for special occasions, dinner price is a little high for me being a student but the late night is much much much better!!!!
Matsuyama is our favourite Japanese restaurant. We enjoy the laid back ambiance, the superbly fresh sashimi/sushi, the Matsuyama rolls, Matsu combo, bento boxes and the grill salmon neck the most. The daily specials are worth ordering as the portions are just right and the selection is quite impressive. Service is always prompt with a smile and we won't dream of eating Japanese food anywhere else in Richmond.
This has got to be the WORST restaurant I have ever eaten at. I go out to eat approximately 4 - 6 times a week, and have enjoyed many different "ALL YOU CAN EAT" restaurants and until tonight I have never been so unsatisfied. First of all, the staff is the worst. They do not greet you when you walk in, nor do they talk to you at all. You have to WAVE down staff to pick up your order. And if you want anything else, good luck! Because you won't get any staff to help you out. Not to mention, they give you a time limit of 1.5 hours to finish. I like to enjoy my time out, and take my time to eat, not rush to finish. I'm paying to eat out, not to be rushed to eat. OH and the servers, GET TO CHOOSE THERE OWN TIP. I'm pretty sure thats for the customer to decide. But I can see why the choose there on tip because the service is horrible. I can't see anyone actually tipping them. I have never been so unpleased in my life with eating out. I will NEVER return to this restaurant again and I advice you just to go somewhere else like Kisha Poppo where the service, food and quality are actually worth the price. Or anywhere else for that matter.
I came to this restaurant with my other half, hoping to eat some quality raw fish. We used to eat here quite frequently for the last 2-3 years but have not returned for a few months because the freshness of the raw fish was horrendous. We decided to give the restaurant another try tonight. We arrived and waited for a table. We specifically asked for a large table instead of the puny table that seats only 2 people. I'm sorry but these tables are pathetic. Customers come to eat all you can eat sushi and are expected to sit at a table that's smaller than the tables at Starbucks. It's ridiculous. The manager tried to seat us but my boyfriend who is quite muscular stated that we would rather sit at the table that seats 4, because it provides more space to relax and eat. We did not want to sit at the crammed table where the next table of 2 was less than half a foot away. My boyfriend asked the manager if he'd want to sit at this table for all you can eat and be replied "no, I know what you mean". Can this restaurant stop being so cheap and get rid of these puny tables? The manager even acknowledged that the tables were small, yet still decides to keep them in his restaurant. However, since there was only 2 of us, he insisted we would have to sit us at the table for 2. We already waited for the big table because the waitress said we could have it. The manager finally replied with a snobby "fine, just sit here. I'll work around it". And to that my boyfriend and I had no interest in eating here anymore. We left and decided to try Richmond sushi. It was date night and I met a woman at Ichiro. First time and she wanted to be impressed naturally. I'm not sure if the weird menu was scary or alluring; perhaps a little of both. I have driven by this place a couple of times on my way to Steveston, and rarely see cars parked. I was just in one of those crazy moods meeting a different kind of woman so I was going to try something different knowing I prob won't even like it. Well It was the adventure I expected for the night. We waited for quite awhile ( nearly 15 minutes) and there was only one other person in front of us before food came. It was box of dumplings and beef and salad I didn't see the hustle that other places like this usually exhibit. Maybe there was a lot going on with delivery in the kitchen. The place is also a little dingy inside.
The food was okay, not bad and not good mostly weird Asian. I think perhaps with a little effort and some paint this place could improve.
