I've been to Aji Toro a few times for all you can eat. It's probably the worst sushi I've ever had in my life. The gyoza was burnt on the bottom, the rolls were small and tasteless and the service was just okay. The only staff that I enjoyed was the lady at the cash register, she was extremely friendly and happy. I would NOT recommend eating here.
I've been going to Sushi Han for 10 years now. I bring my friends and family whenever I get a chance. The food is consistently amazing and the staff are polite and quick to serve you. I have never had a bad experience here. The updated renovation a few years ago really change the ambience to the restaurant. It is welcoming, cozy and cute. It's always busy around 6pm for the dinner rush...a lot of people like to do take-out from there as well! All in all, Sushi Han is affordable, delicious and always a treat. I would highly recommend this place.
Have been going here off and on for the better part of 25+ yrs, really? Am I getting that old, anyway back to the subs. Don't know when but there was a change in the size of the buns, still taste the same. I love the piles of grilled onions bound up with the melted mozzarella, have often thought of ordering just a plate of this mix. The meat, especially the steak, can be tough and gristly at times, but with the mound of melty toppings and tangy dressing I can look past this indiscretion. The place always look as though a packed lunch crowd abruptly left at once leaving everything in its place, from dirty forks to last months newspaper. The cooks look as equally rumpled, looking like they haven't had a day off in 25+ yrs. But with all the warts and rough edges still a bargain and institution for cheap eats. Don't change a thing!
I totally agree with the other recent review on this entity.
If you want to have a feel of a beggar, try redeeming your Groupon coupons at this shop. The attitude of the lady behind the counter will turn immediately from "nice" to "nasty" upon realising that you are redeeming for their ice cream which YOU HAVE PAID IN ADVANCE AT SO-CALLED BARGAIN PRICES. I will never buy their coupons again!!!
Moreover, what service could one expect from a shop which only opens its door at the wish of its owner/staff without showing the basic respect towards its customers by displaying at least a simple OPEN/CLOSED sign on its door (not to say its business hours)??? I also tried to redeem my coupons on four consecutive weekdays without luck. If it wasn't the lighted lamp on the counter inside the shop, I would think that this shop has wound up after taking our money from Groupon.
A word to the owner - Please remember that you are a retail servicing entity at a tourist hot spot!
We were at the Blue Canoe last night for a friends birthday. We made the trek from North Burnaby in a torrential downpour, got lost as the restaurant didn't appear to have a sign out front. I had to walk along the boardwalk to find it. Once inside I noticed they had martinis on for $5 so when the server asked me what I would like to drink I asked her what kind of gin they were putting in the martinis. She said it was Bombay so I ordered one which I enjoyed. For dinner I had the salmon sliders and ceasar salad. The sliders were disappointing as the salmon was strands of salmon with strands of beets on them. I would have preferred a piece of salmon rather than strands and I didn't enjoy the beets on it at all. The sliders were about $14 for three which would have been okay if they were phenomenal but they weren't. The salad was good. After dinner I ordered a coffee with a Frangelico on the side and bought my friend a Monte Cristo. The real disappointment was the bill. We paid it and left and then wondered why it was so much higher than we thought. It turns out that I was charged $8 for each martini when they were advertised for $5. I was also charged $3.75 for a cup of coffee and about $6 for the Frangelico which means the coffee and liquor came to $9.75 when my friend's Monte Cristo was only $7. If they are going to charge $3.75 for coffee the server should have suggested that I order a special coffee rather than a liquor on the side. I will not return as I didn't enjoy my meal and felt ripped off on the drinks.
I purchased the groupon coupon for 2 liter ice-cream. The owner was so bad when I presented her the voucher. She greeted me with "you come in a bad day"! I was shocked and ask why? She said that she was so busy (there was no one else in the shop.) Then she asked me to come next day, but I said no because this was the THIRD time I tried to redeem the voucher. The shop closed during the weekdays but without any signs outside the shop and no message/remarks when we purchase the deal at Groupon. Then I quickly decided what I want, then she asked me to come back after 20 minutes! I said I would wait in the shop. The owner then put the ice cream into 2 1-liter plastic containers with some squeeze outside of the containers. After that she put the containers in a very wrinkled , huge with Christmas print plastic bag. I said I don't need the bag but I want some napkin to clean up the ice cream outside the containers. She said she didn't have any napkin in the shop. I was angry and I said you were selling food and you didn't any napkins in the shop. Then she yelled at me and said what else I wanted to. At this point, I couldn't hold my temper. I said I wanted to complain and I would NEVER EVER come to this shop again.

Our reservation was for 7:30pm on a Friday, it was made several days in advance. We arrived early but were still made to wait over 30 minutes and were finally seated at around 8pm. The restaurant was extremely busy, with a line-up out the door so despite our reservation we didn't think much of it at this point. People who didn't have a reservation were being asked to wait over an hour.
The trouble began when we tried to order; they had actually asked us to put in an order form a few minutes before we were seated, so we expected to get some food relatively quickly. Nothing came for 15 minutes, not even the soup base for the central hot pot. When we inquired, several servers said "it was coming." Finally at 8:30, somone who looked like a manager or head waiter showed up and told us our order had been "lost" and asked us to reorder. So we had been sitting like idiots at an empty table for half an hour for nothing. He also gave us a pot of soup and a single plate of meat... great, pity food. At 8:45, we got 2 plates of food but it wasn't even our order, since I no longer cared we just ate it.
Our first order didn't start to arrive in earnest until around 9pm. It was sluggish the rest of the night as the restaurant was extremely busy and it was painfully obvious that they didn't have enough staff, or at least enough staff who gave a flying cow turd about service. On and off it went for two more hours; the head waiter/manager didn't come back the rest of the night and avoided our table. By 11pm we tired of the charade, waved the white flag, paid our bill and left unsatisfied and unhappy. A close to three and a half hour ordeal and I wasn't even full from an "All-You-Can-Eat" restaurant. As they apparently have a two hour time limit on meals, I half wish they had kicked us out to spare us any further humiliation.
There was no recognition by the staff or management of what had happened, the cashier didn't even look at us when he took our money (we received no compensation). Despite the appalling service, I don't blame the servers themselves as they are being asked to do a ridiculous amount of work with what looks like little training, motivation, or direction from above. The responsibility lies squarely with management, which was good leaving problems for their staff to handle; or the owner, who we were told was sitting 2 tables over (which was why his table was being served by the head waiter and 2 others ahead of all the other tables seated at the same time). It was an outrageous display of disregard for his clients, a complete shambles.
*Some notes: There is a selection of soup bases and the price differs by what you choose, not by how many people are in your party. The food is mediocre though they have a decent selection. If you want to stick with tea, don't expect it to be refilled unless you ask. Not everyone speaks English (or even good Mandarin), having a Cantonese friend at your table is handy.
I wrote this email to the manager david on the same day of visiting the restaurant, but he has yet to reply. obviously he doesn't care.
Our family visited your restaurant at 2pm on Oct 8 2012. We booked reservation for 4 on oct 7 2012 for 2pm and asked to have the restaurant save us 1 of your famous Yang-Chui Chicken.
However, upon arrival at 2pm, the server told us that the chicken is not available at the time and that the new batch will be cooked in 45 minutes at the earliest.
We were deeply disappointed and that we were going to order some other items, but they turned out to be unavailable as well?!
So we decided to leave your restaurant right then.
It was very upsetting for us that even when we made reservation the day before and asked to have 1 YC Chicken reserved for our party, none was available regardless of the reservation made.

It was a beautiful, sunny day at Steveston when my boyfriend and I decided to have lunch at one of the restaurants. I used to come here a lot in the past with my family, and vaguely remember that we had good experiences here with the food. I thought that it would be nice to have a try again.
We got a table out on the patio and were given menus. Waitress came by and asked if we were ready to order, but we needed a couple more minutes. She never came back. We were not even asked for any drinks. I'm a server too, and the first thing you need to do is get the drinks out! So after being ignored, yes- ignored for about 20 minutes (I kid you not, the bf tried to call a different waitress who was cleaning a table near us, and I am pretttyyyy sure she heard, but she shuffled away)- we finally were able to stop a waiter. We ordered clam chowder and fish and chips. We also asked for a glass of water and Iced Tea.
And then, the wait for the food began. I don't know, it was probably another 20 minutes? That's not the best part though. I think the whole team of servers passed by our table and not one of them realized we were sitting there with an empty table. I didn't ask them for our drinks because I wanted to see how long it would take them to realize we didn't have any drinks yet. So then the food finally came. The waiter came out with them and dropped it on our table, said Enjoy, and turned on his heels so quickly I almost- allllmosttt thought he wouldn't hear me. I said Can we get our drinks? A turn of his head and he sputtered out "Whhaat?" I repeated "Can. we. please. get. our. drinks."
"Oh... what did you order?"
Gosh. A different waitress came out with our drinks (thank you). Seriously, who was our server? Or are you guys not assigned tables? The clam chowder was amazing. 3 stars for that. I might, just might return only for this chowder. The fish was so damn crispy, it crumbled when I tried to stick the fork through it. Not impressed. Hopefully you guys see this review and change up your service. Or at least check on your customers once in a while. Please?
Food: For cold appetizer or platter, I ask for choices and portions. My favourites on the fresh-from-the-tank seafood are the Alaska King Crab (seasonal), rock cod, crab, lobster, and my new discovery of the sautéed prawn with dry scallop/deep fried vegetable leaves. I also enjoy their soup of the day, crispy chicken, Peking duck, seasonable vegetables, etc. (Their made-in-house sauce compliments the appetizers/entrée to a sumptuous level!) For a party of 4 or more guests, I always make special requests (to pre order) for double boiled whole winter melon with assorted seafood and meat, fried rice wrapped in lotus leaf; and the baked tapioca pudding. For dim sum, Kirin has a wide variety of superb traditional and creative new dim sum items. For dessert, it is my delight to enjoy the doubled boiled milk with ginger juice, and the egg custard tarts.
Service: The receptionists make great efforts to streamline the customers to their tables with little to no waiting time. (My suggestion - don’t forget to make reservation.) The menu(s) have extensive lists of different dishes. (Don’t forget to ask about the “Weekly Special.”) The waiters/waitresses are always ready to assist for selections. The chefs will also make changes in the ingredients to accommodate customers’ taste buds e.g. I prefer not so spicy dish. The bottom line - to dine in pleasure.
Value: In my opinion, it is the quality of the food, the attentive service, the chefs’ culinary inspiration, and the management of the restaurant that make this such a wonderful dining experience. Therefore, in monetary value, Kirin is most worthy of their prices. I also measure their success in business - dedication to emphasizing the best of the Asian cuisine, and accommodation of the wishes of their customers.
Ambiance: Unique reception area - small display of Asian artifacts and wide range of awards to Kirin, (especially the impressive 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award. from Vancouver Magazine) Spacious dining hall - with floor-to-ceiling windows, chandelier, plentiful of ceiling lights and pendant lights for maximize brightness. The tables have cozy settings and ample room around each other.
We were a party of eight and we all had the Roast Beef Yorkie dinner special, nicely prepared and at an unbelievably low price. There are two sizes, 5ox and 8oz, accompanied by Yorkshire pudding, mashed potato and veg. The service was friendly and attentive. The furniture is somewhat utilitarian, and the lighting was not all turned on. However, this is the place for a quality meal that will not burn a hole in your pocket.
Arrived about 3pm on Sunday, not too many patrons. TV was a bit too loud (NFL game). Ambiance was okay, nothing special. Our server seemed a bit uninterested and brusque at first, but then she warmed up and was quite friendly.
We started with the chicken wings with the sweet rub - they were delicious, crispy coating with soft tender meat, the rub was sweet but......hmmm not sure of the other flavours, we enjoyed them fully anyhow. Then we had the St Louis style ribs, they were meaty and tender, but the sauce was just too ordinary, a tomato based sauce that was not too flavourful, it needed something more to give it a kick. I had 2 sides; potato wedges and sauteed veggies - they were tasty. My companion had the baked beans and yam fries; neither of which she cared for too well.
Over all a pretty good meal, we passed on dessert.
This was my first time at the River Rock Buffet and I loved it. There were many food choices (could have been a few more meat choices) but the food was excellent and Uncle Willy's does not measure up to this place it all.
The service my mother and I received was amazing and the staff seem to mind everyones table because we did not need to wait for our server at all. As soon as a server saw me looking around the room someone was
at my table asking if we needed anything. My table was cleared of plates, drinks topped up and I had a great experience.
For the money this is incredible and I normally go to the Keg but not any more! For $29.99 I am able to have salad, desert, dinner, pop, coffee or tea and if I wanted an extra something it is included and I do not have to wait 30-45 minutes for my food! Where else can you go and have 10 crab legs if you wanted? They even warmed up butter for us!
We have had food from here before and it's been great. However this time the food was horrible. It smelled sour and tasted even worse. We wondered how old it was. The service was nothing to write home about. We called to complain and the person said it was cooked to order, but I definitely don't believe it. Especially when they said it would take 45 minutes to deliver yet we got it within 20 minutes. (we live at least 20 minutes away from the restaurant.) We definitely won't be returning.
We had a great F&C experience at the Pajos on the wharf a couple months ago so we decided to spend one of the possibly last sunny Saturdays at Garry Point Park enjoying a F&C lunch in the park. We got to the concession about 11:30 and grabbed a table in the sun overlooking the river beach. Ordered 2 large cod F&C for $30. While I was collecting our condiments for the table I could see the cook in the back had stockpiled several fryer baskets with precooked cod and sure enough, our order came up much too quickly to be fresh fried. Not a good omen.....
The fries were okay but dry and needed vinegar and ketchup and the fish didn't have the crispy light batter we enjoyed previously at the wharfside PAJOs. Smoking guns for pre-fried food re-heated. Still edible but disappointing after our previous experience down the dock. I can appreciate they want to try and keep ahead of the crowd but pre-cooking F&C should be a cooks sin punishable by boiling oil immersion.
Ordered a number of sushi rolls and discovered a bone in two different pieces of Toro. Both bones were 1.5 cm long and the thickness of a round toothpick. We were surprised to find bones because the fish had a pasty consistancy, like it had been ground up. We were unable to finish the miso as it was too salty and had an odd flavour. Would not return. Would not reccomend unless you like your sushi bone-in.
We had dinner at the American Grille last evening on our way home from the airport. They validate parking in their parking lot for 2 hours. You just give your license number to the hostess. The ambiance is that of a typical hotel coffee shop. It’s a nice room but it is not meant for fine dining by any means, no linen on the tables and the décor is just that of a nice upscale coffee shop.
The service was very good considering how busy they were. We had a glass of wine each while we perused the menu. A basket of nice hot baquettes was brought to the table. They were really good and the butter was soft. A lovely start to dinner. My husband and I shared the mussels in white wine reduction with garlic, onions & tomatoes. They were served with fries. The mussels were very good but they were not as flavorful as some mussels I’ve had. For entrees I had the rack of lamb. I requested the lamb medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. The lamb was so juicy and had a wonderful taste. The sauce was just perfect and did not overwhelm the lamb. It was a full rack of 8 and extremely good value at $28.00. My husband ended up eating about 1/3 of my lamb as there was so much of it. My husband had the smoked sable fish with honey miso glaze served with fingerling potatoes and baby bok choy. It was perfectly cooked. For dessert we shared a dessert that consisted of ice cream, chocolate syrup, lemon curds & meringue, bananas, whipped cream and nuts. Truly decadent.
A lovely evening and a good stop to or from the airport.
The food was great. They have some speical rolls and suishi that other suishi place doesn't have. I will recommend their signature roll. The watiress was surprisingly friendly, and price is alright. Got 10% off and free ice-cream using the qooway card. Who can say no to ice-cream? The ambiance was acceptable, nothing fancy, but I only care about the food. Will go more often for sure!
Came here with 6 other people. We ordered beef tongue, takoyaki, fried fish, salmon pizza (that other reviewers rave about) and a bunch of other items. The place is owned and run by Chinese people (it's Richmond after all) so it lacked the genuine Japanese izakaya feeling.
The portions are quite small. Although considering its a izakaya it's not too surprising. The salmon pizza was not as great as you think it is. It's just crunchy pizza dough topped with California roll fillings and a piece of salmon sashimi. I admit it was tasty but nothing out of ordinary.
We ordered the lobster deluxe roll for $20. It tasted bitter and lacked any flavor. Presentation was nice but the taste didn't follow up to how it looked.
The place is very nice though, with decor that resembled a high class Japanese restaurant. It has lighted floors. giant TV's and comfy chairs.
There's always a waitress/waiter on the floor but it was a bit difficult to get their attention (maybe because we sat at the corner of the restaurant.)
Bill came up to be around $120. Not bad but not all of us were satisfied or full.
The service was good, the waitress was really surprised someone walked in though.
Anyways, my girl friend and I got attracted by the $11.99 all you can eat poster and we so we thought we would give it a try.
That was the worst decision we ever made, and I walked out regretting not looking at any reviews beforehand.
When we first walked in, we thought the chef was a Japanese, BUT, the moment he opened his mouth, our first impression of the restaurant was already heading to the negative side. He spoke full standard Mandarin Chinese and so was everybody else serving.
Anyways, we still thought that should't matter much, we were just a bit disappointed.
Then we looked at the all you can eat menu,
2 pcs max salmon/tuna sashimi per person, WTF? ALL YOU CAN EAT?
Other food on the menu were just basic stuff, nothing special to choose. (ie. cucumber maki, tuna maki etc.)
SO, from all you can eat, we switched to ordering meals instead.
The price were not cheap, we ordered a sushi combo + box set, costed us $24.
In the sushi combo, it had 1 salmon nigiri, 1 scallop, tuna maki, ebi, tobiko, and tako (which I just realized they didn't even serve it while writing this review!!!)
***** I have to emphasize this part with the *, the nigiris had rice bigger than any other all you can eat places you can ever imagine, the rice was HARD, I can tell they were not sushi rice. This was the first ever, I had to leave out a piece of rice from ordering not from all you can eat, EPIC. The tuna maki, rice was hard again, seaweed was unchewable, I still can't believe it.....They color of the tuna/salmon/hokkigai was weird, I am writing this review in the washroom with a diarhea, and we just finished eating 2 hrs ago.
My girlfriend had the boxset, again, the taste/color of the sashimi was weird, the chicken teriyaki was cold and horrible, the tempura was not even crunchy, the california roll we didn't even want to finish it.
Overall, if this place can give negative scores out of 10, this place definitely deserves -10. HOLY F****.
