Watami Japanese Dining House serves up high quality sushi, seafood and other Japanese dishes in Richmond.
Be warned!!! This has got to be THE WORST restuarant you will ever go to!! I'm not a picky person and don't usually write a review for a place, but the experience we got from here has propelled me to warn others about this place. No one should have to endure the dining experience we got here.
The first thing they ask you when you arrive is if you have a Groupon so they can just skimp on the basics after that. We ordered two bento boxes which we didn't get. Rather, a kitchen staff person, hasitly runs up to your table with a tray full of loose dishes and mishaply throws it as you as he probably has overcooked, oversoaked oil laden tempura he needs to get back to. This place seriously lacks enough waitresses as the only one waitress had her hands full as it looks like the owners are too cheap to hire more help.. After we sorted through the mine field of dishes from our bento boxes, we realized the Mango Roll that was suppose to be a part of the bento box wasn't even there. It finally comes with our other order of a Spicy combo but it wasn't a Mango roll but a California. It took awhile to flag down the waitress about this who seemed confused about it. When she brought it back to the chef at the sushi bar who made it, he seemed even more confused about what he made. So it was brought back slapped with a piece of Mango on top.
In the meantime, we had dishes on our table that were never collected. As the restuarant got more busy, another lady, who seemed to be the manager, showed up to help servie the food but she would walk by and give us no eye contact at the pyramid of dishes left from our "bento" box. It was like if she couldn't see us, we couldn't get her to collect the dishes that was cluttering our table. Such a nice game of "i can't see you, so you can't see me".
We always finish our sushi at any restuarant we go to but the food here was absolutely terrible, we couldn't. How awful to feel like you are forcing yourself to eat something that tasted like grass. We only came here because we purchased a Groupon but boy, we will NEVER come back even if the food was free. This place skimps on everything once they know you have a groupon from limiting what you can order with your groupon, to the service, presentation, and the quality of the food.
We called Groupon to complain about this and were thankfully able to get our money back which at least made us feel better about this terrible experience.
Been here a bunch of times. Service and Food is definately 100% when you dont have a groupon.
Prepared to be ignored and treated very unprofessionally when you present your groupon to them. They only give you 1/3 of what is actually on their menu. (meaning you only get a limited selection of what you can order)
We ordered Gyoza to start and had to ask for it twice. It finally came 45 mins after. We were almost already done our meal. To add to that, it wasnt even cooked. We had to ask for tea, and they got two out of four of our items wrong, we then had to send it back to the kitchen, where as the server just giggled 'cause she thought it was so funny'
I would recommend going to this restaurant without a groupon. You will get better service and a vast variety of items to order from their menu.
'And to the restaurant, .......the point of groupon is to promote your restaurant, you should be giving 110% service and satisfaction to get people coming back without the groupon.' You have definately lost us.
I usually dine in Vancouver but went down to Richmond to try out the dbox experience in Silvercity in Richmond a couple days ago. A group of my friends (from Richmond) suggested to grab a bite from Watami before the movie. We went in and the young waitress came and seated us right away. She was really friendly, handed us the menu and left us with some time to skim down the menu. It was very quiet, not a lot of customers at the time I went surprisingly (6pm?), and I personally enjoys this kind of atmosphere. The food is alright, above average than most sushi places I've been to and the value for the food is what you pay for so I'm not complaining. A lady sitting by the counter (the manager I assume) came up to us and started a conversation with my friend about his phone case which I find entertaining to watch. She is very friendly and outgoing and not to mention, very humorous. I guess some of her jokes can come off playfully offensive but it has done no harm. Once you start talking to her like a friend, she becomes your friend and you'll find her 'offending' jokes extremely funny.
On a side note, what I really like about this restaurant was that it was very comfortable. The decorations, tv's, and a touch of the nice and cozy feeling when you sit down and eat. I don't know what the other complaints were about but it was a good dining experience for me:) I'll definitely go there again and maybe 'bond' with the manager again haha!
I was out with a couple friends and we looked to Watami for a casual dinner and we were quite pleased with our initial visit. We were greeted with a hearty "Irasshai"and promptly seated. The service was quick and friendly and we were eating 10-15 minutes after we walked in the door.
We decided on some of their novelty rolls and they were all quite delicious, especially the roll with bbq unagi on top of it. We also tried a couple of generic rice dishes and they were not bad compared to some other places. Their gyozas were also a highlight of the night since they appeared to be freshly made rather than the freezer burnt, store bought crap other places carry.
Value wise the meal ran for about $45 for 3 people which is quite reasonable considering the overall quality. I would definitely recommend this place to other people and I look forward to my next visit.
