This restaurant is closed and is now called Shanghai Cuisine.
Specializes in dishes from Taiwan. Organ meats (offal) reach new heights in spicy and flavorful sauces and broths. Some Szechuan influence in the Taiwanese tradition. Modern decor with white, greys, and blacks in the interior color scheme. Cash Only. No Cash? There's a TD Canada Trust right across the parking lot.
Food: ordered I believe a total of 10 dishes, all of which were not memorable. The only dish I liked was the fried chicken but the rest of it was either flavorless, too salty or just plain mediocre. Hot and sour soup was just sour and not hot at all. String bean dish with garlic would had been good if the beans didn't look so mangled. Fried noodle was flavorless and didn't have much shrimp (3-4). There were a host of other dishes but you get the idea.
Service: extremely poor. Hard to find someone for anything. Didn't have enough chairs for the reservation when we arrived. Served soup without soup spoons. Soup came out after a majority of the other dishes had already been served. Some food items took too long to arrive.
Ambiance: it was ok if it hadn't been so packed that my mom was told to move her chair in because there was not enough room for people to pass - well, if you hadn't over-packed the restaurant, there wouldn't be this problem! Chairs were low for the table but looked stylish - form over function I suppose.
Overall: I wouldn't be coming back to the restaurant since there are just so many more in Richmond alone that I could go to with better food and better service. In terms of ogling waitresses, they weren't very pretty at all so I don't know who the "hot" waitresses previous reviewers are referencing so I wouldn't go back for that reason either.
Food: beef wrapped in grn onion cake which i thought was pretty good. i didnt think that it was too doughy at all unlike the last reviewer. shanghai dumplings were ok. nothing special...i usually like it when there's a bit of "soup" after you bite into it, but their dumplings dont have that. pan fried rice noodle w/ beef kinda tasted funky...couldnt put my finger on it...but the beef was nice and tender. szechuan pork w/ spinach was very tasty. the pork was very soft and not that fatty...almost tasted like beef brisket!
Service: had to wait 20min on a sat nite for 2 which is actually not too bad for this restaurant. although the pork dish was fine, it really wasnt what we ordered, but it's ok. miscommunication i guess...not all the servers are very competent in english and my canto wasnt good enough to describe what i was really asking for.
Ambiance: nice modern looking decor. clean and strong AC!! good for small groups but can also accomodate large groups w/ some of their tables.
Overall: i've eaten here before and have always thought the food was pretty good. sitting there looking around at some of the other dishes on other ppl's tables makes me want to try them next time! some of them look very yummy!
Prices are average. Food is tasty but the Shanghai-influenced dishes such as anything noodle or dough-related fried or in soup are not very good in texture (I'm guessing they don't make the noodles themselves so they might want to look into purchasing another brand of noodles). The Shanghai soup dumplings (siu leong bao) is not something I'd care to order twice. The beef/onion wrap/rolls are too thick with dough and somewhat too raw-flour-y tasting--again, their flour/noodle related dishes should be avoided while the sauces are done right, the quality and texture of the other isn't.
I can't comment on their Taiwanese specialty dishes of internal organs as I don't usually make a point to eat most of that stuff by choice.
Remember to bring cash with you!
Food: I like chili wantons and 3 cup chicken. Beef wrap is awesome. Food is yummy, decent portion and inexpensive. Usually if the restaurant bothers to have interior decor, they would charge you a lot more for food(and if you want inexpensive food, you probably have to stare at eye sore worn out ugly interior). Not here! Price is very FAIR. I love it! No complaint.
Service: Service is Ok. Could be quicker, that's all. Maybe hire more waitresses?
Ambiance: Great! For that kind of price tag (inexpensive), you can actually sit comfortably and have some neat decor to look at, that's really a big plus and I think that's worth mentioning. Same price tag, if you go to restaurants serving North American food in Vancouver, you probably would sit in an ugly place looking like a diner.
If you think I am too lenient for giving 5 stars, I can't help it after paying for some expensive crappy meal somewhere else. I start to appreciate it very much when people give you fair price for some decent food (and sometimes even decent environment to sit down). I don't pick them apart no more even though things could always be better.
My BF took me here, he always talks about this place he loves it so much. I think it's more for him to check out the waitresses. He is in love with one that looks like Ayumi Hamasaki.
The food there is very good and insexpensive. I have to admit the the menu is extensive and they have food listed as favourite items or spicey items etc.
I would go for those if it is your first time. And if you are a guy, you'll love the watiresses! LOL.. Anyways. You have to try their pork ribs. I think it's called wu xi ribs. And their chicken nuggets and dumplings are good too!
It can be pretty busy at times. so you may have to wait once in awhile. They also have these neat little snacky thingys like pigs ears and stuff. He likes them more than me, but they are kinda neat
it's not the same as it used to be. I heard that the original chef went and opened up his own place. I think one of the reasons why their shanghai buns are not the same. No soup inside and the wrap is too thick. This place used to be known for it's.....hot waitresses as well as the food, but it's average now. Not that it's a bad thing. However, I did notice that it was closed on a day that it should normally have been opened. Is it still open?
We made reservations for 11:30am on a Saturday and was really surprised that during the course of our lunch, there were not a lot of people...usually there's a line-up. I really liked the Formosa style satay beef shaghetti, String beans and Spicy Pork. The food was overall, delicious but the service did impact the overall experience. The waitresses were not very attentive...we had to ask for more tea and move empty plates to another table ourselves so that we could accommodate other dishes. All they were doing if they were not bringing out food was chatting with each other. Laziness was what my boyfriend described of them.
my buddies drag me here every so often for one reason only, the veri attractive waitresses. yup, its sad but true. however, i usually end up sitting facing the wall and only get enjoy the food (that was the original purpose of the whole trip, aiyaaaaaa.) Anyway, the prawn salad is veri good. and the chicken in claypot also yummy. just make sure u go early or reserve a table in advance, it gets real busy at night time.
if u like Taiwanese women - i mean Taiwanese food - this is the place to be.
It's Chinese New Year's (CNY's) Eve and we planned to go to Ellie's but it was closed (because of CNY?) so we had dinner at Vogue instead. We didn't have to wait long until we were seated mainly because there were only four of us.
Food: We shared chili wontons, clams and winter melon in soup, mongolian beef, fried tilapia (fish) with spicy garlic sauce, eggplant with spicy minced pork sauce, and red bean pancake for dessert. Taiwanese cuisine is a little bit spicy (and saucy), but totally delicious!
Service: Service was ok because I can imagine how busy it gets during CNY. One thing for them to improve on is maintaining its cleaniness. I know how busy they can get, but they should really wipe the tables clean before seating patrons, and inspect their dishes to ensure they are clean.
Ambiance: Although the restaurant is busy and noisy (like any other Chinese restaurant in Richmond), this restaurant has a very trendy and modern decor which deserves an article in a design magazine.
Price: Good food and exceptional value that can (and will) compete with any other restaurant in Richmond.
Overall: I would totally recommend this restaurant if you're in for some Taiwanese food.
Went here a few times and it seemed like they changed the waitresses? Anyways, when my boyfriend and i were seated to our table, the waitress dropped down the menu and tea. The tea wasn't hot, it was just lukewarm, so after a few minutes later we finally got the attention of one of the waitress to change our tea but instead, she only brought one cup.
Ok, lets talk about the food. It was delicious. We had ordered this tofu and shrimp and clam hot pot, a veggie dish and a beef hot pot. All were delicious. We couldn't finish it all so we got them to pack it for us. The boxes were leaking the sauce and the bag had a hole on the bottem =.=" So we told her to get us another bag. But a funny thing happened, 10 minutes before we decided to leave, the lights turned off! I looked outside, it was only at Vogue.
I will return to enjoy another round of their food! ( Just hope they add in new ones, some seem similar)
I love the vogue! The food is delicious, the prices are reasonable, and so it's always packed. I'll definitely commute to Richmond for the food!
The only down side (which should absolutely be overlooked, seeing as the food is delicious) is that the service ranges from "minimalistic" to horrible. One time we had just received our food, and they had started closing for the evening. They made us pay before we were finished, and turned the lights off, making us eat in the dark as they cleaned around the patrons who were still eating. It was shockingly rude! And I'm used to eating at Asian restaurants. Never had such a bad service experience.
BUT again, I'll keep going back, 'cause I love the food.
I am a banana.
I went to this restaurant on a Friday night.
I understand the concept behind the food and the restaurant.
But I believe it falls short on both parts.
At the time we arrived the restaurant was not full. But you would not think that by the amount of noise.
The interior is mostly designed with hard surfaces which reflect and amplify noise. So if you are expecting to have a quiet romantic dinner it will be impossible. To me the seating arrangements are ill designed and crowded.
We were seated promptly. The waitresses were quite nice and they would have been better looking if they smiled more. The staff requires at least a busboy to clear tables so the waitresses can concentrate on the patrons.
The food is good and priced correctly if you are hungry. But don't expect any gastronomic revelations, after all it is a chinese restaurant.
Eat good food, seated comfortably, good pricing!
Just the service has to be quicker but it was SUPER BUSY!
The food to eat if you love chinese and its taiwanese style.
There are a lot of places in Richmond to try tihs style but you should come here, I had a good experience!
Service was bad. The girl who showed us to our table looked like she would rather be some place else. We've been here in the past (a year ago at least) but it was not like this. Food is so-so. Rather spend my money elsewhere.
This place is good at offering unique dishes and combining interesting regional flavours....where else can you get green onion Chinese pancake to go with your marinated pig intestine? Prices are reasonable as well. Downsides are the service and the ambiance. The young, usually scantly dressed waitresses (you will NEVER find a waiter in this place) are rushed and sometimes rude. The tables are too close together (let' maximize revenue per square feet) for a comfortable dining experience
I've been to this place a few times, couple times for lunch and once for dinner. The food is always pretty solid, pretty good.
Their fried tofu comes in a huge portion, definitely worth it. It's also pretty good. Their soup noodles are decent though they seem to like giving you the pork chop or fried chicken first before giving you the noodle! Their stews are worth ordering too.
Their service is okay though the last time I went, it seemed really slow. I guess they were lacking waiters/waitresses. It took them forever to come order, and the tea was never refilled.
I also like the atmosphere. It is well decorated. The eating utensils matches and clean. The seats are also comfortable.
