Tapenade Bistro serves up Mediterranean cuisine in the heart of Steveston Village.
Love Tapenade in scenic Steveston! This is a favorite spot of ours. Food and service exceed expectations. We can always count on a delicious meal. If I were to make one small suggestion, it would be to serve a softer/lighter bread with the shrimp sandwich...which is excellent. Kudos to the entire Tapenade team!
Tapenade Bistro provides a fine dining experience in a casual, relaxing environment. The menu is a relatively small one that undergoes changes seasonally while the wine list offers some rare, quality finds at very reasonable prices.
Food - 3 - Probably somewhere between a "solid" and "outstanding". The food is good, and sometimes even memorable, but for the most part it is just above average. This is quite a feat in itself if you consider the rest of the dining scene in Vancouver, especially since they've been doing it consistently for quite a few years now. Definitely a gem for residents of Richmond like myself.
Service - 4 - The staff is friendly and efficient. No complaints in half a dozen visits.
Value - 4 - Pricing is very good for both food and wine. Entrees are less than $30 and the markup on wine isn't ridiculous like some (Loden, Yew, etc). Value goes up for folks in Richmond if you consider how much you save on gas and parking by staying in town.
Ambiance - 3 - No view to speak of, but the setting is very traditional and provides a comfortable and casual atmosphere. Nothing special here.
Overall I feel that Tapenade is definitely worth a try, especially if you're in the neighbourhood.
Tapenade is our favourite Steveston restaurant. Whether we go mid-week for a more casual evening, or on a Sat. night, the food, service and ambiance are wonderful. The new winter menu is delicious, have tried the crab caesar salad (yum!), the pate (the best I've ever had) the short ribs, and the osso buco - sooo good! Great wine list - and not gouging customers with the prices. The patio is great in the summer, and the interior is warm and welcoming anytime. Vince has earned his spot as the best restaurant in Richmond!
My wife and I have dined here several times (dinner only) and are constantly impressed. Our most recent visit was truly outstanding, no doubt the best we've had in Richmond, and one of the better meals in any restaurant in the Lower Mainland. The chef focuses on local foods, the "Duo of Tuna" I had was unbelievably good, and if you go try the Gnocchi as a starter. Probably the best I've ever had. My wife had a pasta dish (with short rib) that she was also raving about. The daily specials are really worth trying.
Service was also very good - our waitress seemed to be a real foodie and knew a lot about what she was serving. The decor isn't anything to write home about, although not bad, but with food this good that's not a big deal.
It's great to have a local restaurant at this level!
It was a nice sunny calm evening so I drove some visiting friends out to Steveston to experience patio dining at Tapenade. We had eaten a late lunch so opted only for Sangria and main courses then post-dinner explored the pier with Blends coffee in hand. The Sangria ($24 pitcher) was very refreshing and perfectly blended with a delicious dry fruity aftertaste. The mains we tried were bouillabaise, lamb sirloin, sockeye salmon, NY steak and braised beef short ribs. Everything received praise, however, the lamb was a little dry (although, to be fair, it was ordered well done). The accompanying vegetable was asparagus which all enjoyed. I had the bouillabaise which contained bite-sized potato chunks, three clams, two large scallops, five full plump mussels, several salmon morsels and halibut chunks and two large shrimp. The tomato-saffron broth was flavorful but not overpowering and was perfectly seasoned with a selection of herbs. For $180 (incl gratuity) the five of us felt that this was good value for money. We would definately return.
My wife and I had dinner here after the Valentine's day. We had the carpaccio and the squah soup for starters. They were both very good, the soup was superb and flavorful and rich (in a good way).
I had the shepherd's pie and my wife had the beef wellington with foie gras.
The shepherd's pie was not in a pie dish but served with the lamb bone stuck into the shredded pieces of lamb shaped by a mold. The taste was okay but not out of this world. The beef wellington was way better and very tasty.
Service was excellent, attentive server without being overbearing. The owner was very friendly and would move around the romm asking how the diners enjoyed their meals.
Ambience was very earthy and warm and it was great seeing whole families having their dinners here.
Over-all the experience was memorable and worth repeating.
Been to Tapenade many times and never disappointed. Whether for lunch or dinner, the food and service has been excellent. The patio is a great option on sunny days (even with the plastic chairs as some reveiwers would lament). So...if you want a great food experience when visiting Steveston - go to Tapenade. If you want to sit closer to the water for the view - try the others - but I can assure you that you won't be as happy.
We have been to Tapenade around a dozen times - and have never had a poor meal or bad service.
The pasta's are always cooked a la dente, the sauces are not too heavy.
Meats are always cooked to perfection.
Great martinis (recommend the Pus__ Galore).
We also enjoy the atmosphere, it's airy, open and has outdoor seating with some green space in front.
We have gone in jeans and more dressy wear and have felt comfortable either way. We've brought our teenage daughters and they were catered to quite nicely.
My family and I have been coming here since they opened and we have never been disappointed with the food. The food is always perfect, with great flavours and a well thought out menu. The best time to go is in the summer, when you can sit on the patio with a pitcher of sangria. The staff a very professional and really seem to enjoy their job and the owner is very personable. All in all its a very enjoyable place to spend an evening.
Visiting from London, on the last night before we returned we decided we would take our local (Richmond-based) family out for a meal to thank them for a great time.
This resturant did not let us down. Fantastic food, good service and a reasonable (if large!) bill (on a per head basis, it worked to around £35 each, which isn't bad).
For the food, this is highly recommended. Perhaps not so much for those on a budget!
I ate there last Friday night and I was most impressed by all aspects of the restaurant. Food was absolutely yummy. The best mussels I have ever had , with fennel & cream . Outstanding.
I am a graduate of the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts and I feel I know what good high end food should taste like . This is definately it. You won't be disappointed with their service either.
I have beeen surprised to see Ikea plate like at home ecxept I paid for
the patio is nice but the plastic chair doesn't match with a bistro standing
I come from a Mediteraneen Country and unfortunatly I did not find any pleasure from my meal sorry
steveston village is a very nice area and should br beasutiful to have hight standing bistro
I used to live in Richmond and we used to go to this restaurant a lot, now I live in White Rock and I still find the time to go and eat there. Their Tapas are really delicious. My favorite thing in the meny is the Mussels they are so fresh and good. Also their appetizers are really good.
Tapenade Bistro provides a taste of downtown in historic Steveston Village. I work downtown, I live downtown and it's great to have found something that provides just the right mix of food quality and taste, with service and style. Try them out, you won't be disappointed.
