Sushi World is located in the same complex and next door to Hon's.
I've been coming to this tiny little restaurant for over seven years and I've only been disappointed once. The owner and his various staff over the years have always been pleasant and fun to talk to. By now, he knows the drill as far as what I want.
The Tokyo Rolls are for sure my favourite and the Canuck Roll keeps me filled during games. Even the vegetarian selection is good and my vegan friends appreciated it when I had them over and served the veggie sushi platter.
This place isn't for those who want a delicate taste treat (read - small rolls) or who are overtly concerned about their portion intake. The rolls and sashimi are HUGE. One can get full on a single roll order. I am usually given my choice of what goes into my rolls (maybe it's because I'm a regular), so that's always a bonus for me. They use minimal vinegar and salt in their sushi rice, which I personally love.
The selection is varied enough so that someone who's allergic to shellfish, like myself, can still enjoy the food.
After reading positive reviews about the "unique" rolls and friendly service, I eagerly went to Sushi World last friday with high expectations. I arrived around 4:20pm and placed my order of 4 rolls and a lychee slush drink.
Now I know some of you may find this hard to believe but I waited almost TWO hours to get my take-out order. Not an exaggeration...TWO hours! I'm not usually one to complain about bad service but this incident has really upset me and definitely warrants a negative write up.
The so-called "friendly owner" was aware that I had been waiting awhile, but didn't say anything to reassure me that my food was coming or apologize for the long wait. An apology certainly would have gone a long way. I got up at one point to inquire about the status and he told me they were "half done". Yeah right.
I realize that they were very busy with many take-out orders to fill, but if he didn't think they could accomodate me in a timely manner, he could have said so instead of wasting my time.
During my long wait, I noted that he spent a lot of time chatting with regular customers and keeping them happy and satisfied. It seemed that many customers had their orders ready on arrival. This is speculation but I started to think their phone orders were bypassing my order in efforts of keeping his regular clientele happy. I just don't believe all these customers had called in their orders before I had placed mine.
When I finally did get my food, it was around 6:15pm. I remember this clearly because I was frustrated and extremely upset I was missing the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. I comforted myself by thinking these rolls would be as amazing as the reviews had led me to believe.
When I got home, I opened the box to find huge, grotesque looking sushi. Their rolls were overloaded with rice and were very disappointing taste-wise. The smoked salmon tasted fishy. I couldn't believe I had waited two hours for horrible food. My husband and I ate a few pieces and threw the rest away.
If I had wanted big sushi, I could have just gone to Banzai Sushi on Westminster Hwy where the food is much better and the service is efficient and fair. It would have saved me a lot of time, disappointment, frustration, and bad food.
The price of the sashimi was cheaper than most places, but the rolls were quite expensive. The size of the sashimi was big, but so big that it makes it kind of sick looking at it and putting it in my mouth. Plus, big does not mean it's good. The sashimi was not fresh. And the way they stored it made it undesirable to eat. The first bite I took on my salmon sushi was like no other sushi I ever ate before. The rice was soggy, wet, warm, and was not tightly packed. Looking at the rice on my rolls, I cannot even see the individual rice grains, it was mushy. The rice made the sushi really warm, like they never even fanned the rice. Things just didn't taste fresh.
Other than the food, the service was great. The owner talked to me and asked me which roll was my favorite. To be honest, none of them were, but I just had to say something. I left half of my order uneaten, but I still packed it home because I didn't want to be rude.
Food: Had one of their specialty rolls, rainbow wrap, which was prawn tempura, tuna, salmon, crab, tamago, massago wrapped with cucumber. Tasted good. The tuna and salmon tasted fresh. Prawn tempura was a bit soggy and stale though. Tamago was good. They have several other rolls that don't contain rice.
Service: I'm guessing it was the owner that was talking to me while I was waiting for my order. He was nice, made some suggestions on what to try next time I'm in. Made sure I knew what was in the rainbow wrap so that I wouldn't be getting something I didn't want.
Value: Average price for sushi places.
Ambiance: Place is very small and has a very strong fishy smell. Definitely more geared towards take-out.
this place like the samurai sushi.
in the whole restaurant working there is all chinese people. it is okay because they are friendley service and make the sushi very quickly.
the roll is almost same size as my hand. but they even beat samurai in the sashimi. i ordered 9 piece tuna but i get the 9 piece tuna/salmon..so wrong order. when i get home i open the box and each sashimi is so FREAKKING HUGE! each piece at last 5 cm wide. in those 9 piece i can make 18 piece! holy god
but if you want the cheap sushi bigger than your head then order here.
Although there are a handful of seats for good measure, Sushi World is really just a take out place. Definitely not authentic (Chinese owned) but the food is tasty and they get brownie points for creativity.
Some memorable items are the crepe sushi & rice crepe sushi (think: vietnamese spring rolls wrapper) which don't use any rice at all. There was another roll that was interesting: it was filled with salmon, prawns, egg and mango and was wrapped with thinly sliced cucumber (again, no rice). Hard to imagine? I guess this kind of sushi is friendly for the carb conscious :)
They also have the standard rolls (kappa, california etc.) but they weren't anything special in my opinon. Just sort of rounded out the menu. Menu itself is fairly large and focussed mostly on rolls and nigiri sushi. Portions are large and generous (I.e. they don't just use rice to make the rolls look big... the rolls are very much packed with fillings).
The owner is very helpful and patient when it comes to explaining their sushi creations though I'm almost certain he doesn't speak any Japanese at all. Prices are dirt cheap (in Richmond afterall).
If you're not from Richmond, I definitely would not recommend taking the trip down, but if you're in the area and looking for a quick and cheap place for take out then give it a try ~
Not your average take out sushi joint. There are several unique items on the menu and the prices are very reasonable. Portions are very large and the fish is always fresh. I've been a frequent customer for over 2 years and have never been disappointed.
I went there 2 months ago to try their sushi and bought their most popular dish which was the Tokyo Roll and California Roll and we thought that was pretty good. So for my friend's small Birthday party last week we bought some party trays (second time visit). The roll taste ok because they stuffed with too many stuff which frankly overpowered the rice..just like Samurai Sushi but the sushi were tasteless for two reason...sashimi salmon, tuna weren't fresh and to make it worse the rice was tasteless.. it seems who ever made the rice was off that night, lack of vinegar and some sugar...taste very bland. So I decided to call the store to give them my feedback and right off the bat the owner (MR SUSHI GOD) upon hearing my critical feedback raised his tone and said, "you know that has been our secret recipe since we first open this restaurant and if you don't like it there is nothing I can do,". I replied, " hello MR. I'm not calling to complain so I can get free sushi replacement...ok I know when your sushi rice is off and this is definitely like that...I'm just calling you to let you know because this is not the first time we ordered from you. There's something wrong with your sushi rice, maybe whoever cooked it didn't cook it properly. I got kinda upset when he raised his tone on me and giving me this attitude. Finally he said that next time to return the sushi back and he'll replace them. I said fine but I don't live nearby.
To cut the story short, I never come back again because we all agreed that the sushi quality is just average. And there is many sushi places like that who gives a better service and no cocky attitude. If you want to go there and try, get the Tokyo Roll (instead of nori they use crepe for the wrap) and their other rolls but don't get their sashimi you'll know why ...as soon as you enter their premise. IF you've been to SAMURAI SUSHI on Cambie this place is about half the size.
If you're looking for Tojo's quality sushi, go to Tojo's. Otherwise Sushiworld is a nice little place for affordable sushi. I won't try and sell you on the fact that the sushi is out of this world. It is slightly above average I would say. But the uniqueness and the cost effectiven pricing is what sells this place. Sometimes the sushi is a little too big. When you first walk in you'll be bombarded with choices, the place is neatly decorated with pictures of the menu items which kind of serves as a menu. It's really neat to walk around looking at the different items, drooling while trying to decide what to order.
My personal favourite is the Tokyo Roll which is essentially a riceless california roll wrap in crepe with a little bit of salmon.
It's a nice cute little place to bring a significant other to eat while not having to break the bank. Notice I did say significant other. Meaning 2 or so people. The place is PUNY and hosts about 10 seats. So if you and your big group of friends planning on eating there, you're better off at Samurai/Banzai.
So if you're looking for an Alternative to Banzai/Samurai, or looking for takeout sushi or want to bring a sushi lover on a date. I would highly recommend Sushi World. I find their sushi to be Samurai quality but with more of a Fusion flair.
