Can't remember where I've read that their xiao long bao's were supposed to be exceptional, but it turned out to be quite ordinary. Also, they're one of those who uses peanut butter to mix up the spicy wonton sauce! That was really disappointing. It's the lazy (wo)man's way out. The deep fried doughnut is a bit too greasy w/ old deep fryer oils used but not enough flavour & texture to justify that. The sweet soy soup/drink is not very well made w/ plenty of curd still readily floating around in little pieces everywhere. Seems mine was microwaved as it came lukewarm while the bottom was hot still though the other bowl that came seemed to be thoroughly warmed & steamy. The xiao long bao skin isn't too thick though there was enough liquid inside, it's not soupy tasting so much as it is boring pork liquid, I guess. Not very exciting.
Prices are relatively cheap here and it's "cash only" as well. Small place with as many tables fit in as possible including the larger round tables also used for communal purposes. Definitely won't be wasting my time going back as I've had plenty better though not necessarily at the same price point.
I had been coming to this restaurant for a long time, more than 5 years. Use to drop by and a table was usually available. Now it’s advisable to make a reservation.
The food is excellent, tasty and of excellent quality. So why doesn’t it get a higher rating? Their Shanghai steam buns are the best in Richmond. As well as their smoke fish, egg yoke duck, and brown sauce duck. But the rest of the food arrives greasy: like sweet and sour deep fried fish and seaweed wrap prawns (this was not only greasy but the prawns were the size of toothpicks wrapped in too much batter). Also some of the dishes need a bit more time to cook flavor into the meat thoroughly and thicken the sauce (three flavor chicken hot pot); they suffer from an overly busy kitchen.
I came here last night and none of the waitresses cared to ask how many people i had with me, so after 5 mins of impatient waiting i finally went up to a waitress and didn't want to share a table so my boyfriend and i had to wait for 40 mins for a table.
No one brought us a menu so i had to go up to the counter and get it myself. The tea we receive was warm and had no taste (was it reused?) We ordered the smoked fish, which was quick good, siu long bao (of course) and a noodle dish.
I was really looking forward to eating their siu long bao cause every table ordered it too! When i ate it, it wasn't juicy, the skin was thick. it SUCKED!!! After reading the previous review, now i know why, they changed the whole crew which made since. Other then Northern Delicacy, time to hunt down another place that serves up JUICY siu long bao !
I don't like anything else here except the xiao long bao. The wait for a table is long, it's dirty and the waiter/waitresses keep speaking to me in mandarin even though I speak to them in canto and then speak in canto amongst themselves.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Richmond. A hidden gem... I have nothing but outstanding things to say about this place. Food is to die for! Great value for awesome authentic Szechuan food. Siuloongbau...is YUMMMEEEE~! Try everything...almost all is good. I only hope they will fancy up the place and washrooms. Ugh! Other than that, the food is excellent!
Went there so many times but always found something wonderful. They have the best siuloongbow. Next time you go, check out the special crab soup siu loong bow, only $4.25 and this was the best stuff I have ever had. It's to die for!
I also like their appetizer especially the bean curd with mushroom and their desert.
