good hotpot for cold evenings

I have had hotpot here for dinner several times in the last year and found them to be one of my favorite hotpot restaurants in richmond. I agree with a previous reviewer that even with reservations, you will have to wait a while if its Friday, Saturday or Sunday. They have a good selection of food and the service is hit or miss. They have some good servers and some not so great servers. Food comes out very quickly and the quality of food is pretty good.

I always come here if i'm in the area and i don't have reservations, since its impossible to get into the smaller hotpot places on the same road. Its a good bet either way though, its not as cramped as other places and service for bringing out food is very fast. You still need to sometimes wave down a person though if the restaurant is full. As a bonus, unlike most hotpot places, having clear broth there is no extra charge, so its a bit cheaper when its just two people enjoying hotpot for dinner.

Decent hot pot place

Sun Tung Kee is a decent hot pot place and we go every once in a while, but compared to other hot pot restaurants in Richmond, it doesn't really stand out in any way.

The place is always busy. Making a reservation on a Saturday night just means you wait 25 min instead of 30 min. The servers are pretty helpful if you can manage to get their attention.

The food is not bad. It's pretty great, actually. But as I said, it doesn't stand out in any way compared to hot pot fare in other Richmond restaurants (Chubby Lamb, Cattle Hot Pot, HKYK, etc). I'm not sure if the food is really clean. One of us always seemed to get sick after eating here, but the rest of us are fine (so we're not sure if he's allergic to something).

Overall not a bad place, and it's easier to get seated than Chubby Lamb or Cattle Hot Pot. I would recommend it even though it's not my favorite hot pot restaurant.

Service is great...never had a problem with them except for the ones who cant speak english. Selection of food is great. The deep fried wontons are delicious! I will continue dining here!

Dirty Place, Bad Service, Good Food

The food is good but like most all-you-can-eat restaurants, you never really get the amount that you ask for. I almost felt a hint of racism as well because the table of oriental people beside us were getting their orders one after the other while we had to ask for ours 5 times before I finally approached the manager.

If you do not want to lose your appetite, do not go here. The place is filthy...carpet is gross, washrooms are worse, the kitchen is unbelievably dirty (good thing they don't ACTUALLY cook your food).

In summary, if you are big eaters this place is good value for your money but you aren't going to get the most pleasant experience.

Weekend AYCE
By anticop8 of Vancouver (14 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, February 9, 2009 - 5:15pm [Dine in]

Had the weekend AYCE for $ 18.

Food - solid food quality overall. decent variety. too bad had to add extra $$ for the surf clams. Usual fat beef = good! When ordered 10 plates, they do give you 10 plates! So order if you can finish. Each plate had 7 thin splices. Their fried chicken was GREAT!

Service - was okay, had to keep asking for tea. and the waiter/tress didn't look like they had a great day (bad mood?) lol

Value - excellent value. good price for quality. way better than Little Fat Sheep (Lansdowne) where we had 5 people cost $ 200.

Ambiance - don't expect fancy decoration etc. just need pot, table, chairs and EAT!

Parking - Got to the restaurant early so parking was not a problem (but it might be a problem when its around 7pm)

Sabo.. restaurant
By Sabo of Unknown (2 Reviews)

Well hello =), i ve read through all of the comments and as an employee there.... the only one that speaks "Fluent" English i think its my job to clear some popular misconceptions...

First to mmmsteak, as much as i'd love for us to always be busy, have you ever tried the weekdays? omg.. i am dieing of boredom =) unless your a student, i suggest coming by during these 5 glory days, no wait no need to reserve... as for your friend i suggest cooking thoroughly because the nature of raw seafood in the pot requires it to be 100% cooked

:To hungry hippo, O please no accusations of racism, some of our best customers are Caucasian, we the employees designed the English menu for you guys, ---Yes The Employees --- when we take your order from that menu we have to translate ALL the English into Chinese for the kitchen on a tiny piece of paper, trust me, slow and not fun ( your feeling what Asians feel in a Caucasian place but there is really nothing to it mate), the orders are placed in order by the kitchen staff who do not know who you are, all we do is deliver. but if you feel your order is missing, by all means you MUST ask about it, to Any waiter... its a Chinese and busy all you can eat restaurant during the weekends.. dont worry its not rude just a different culture

As to GabrielEscobar sorry you had to wait, maybe you should try the weekdays if your a student, but believe me if it was that busy, there's no such thing as a reservation.. well u still get priority but you did not lose against some cute girl... Of course if it was up to 90% of the employees you would, that's why 90% of the employees aren't in charge of seating =) what we generally do is just make a biggg long list and check if of "In Order" ( and it doesn't matter if the table is large or small, if your a group of four waiting and your first then you'll get a table sized for 6) I cant really tell you what happened in your situation, but it should not happen.... the girl probably was there before you and went out for a smoke maybe

Side Note: Dont worry our kitchen is cleaner then you think, We have a health officer checking us every now and then .. he'll pop up and say surprise!!!! the restaurant is more then 10 years old, this babies been through alot and it looks accordingly.... btw the kitchen cooks the staff dinner.... we have people asking if we sell that food ;) it looks that good =)

Generally speaking i wont say our service is excellent but its really not as bad as you might think. I mean we are all Olympic athletes.. well... not really but close... haha i am sure all of you have seen us take out 30-40 plates of beef and 20 pounds of food on rock solid plates.... not an easy job.. then the other of the few employees we have are cleaning the tables so that the people waiting wont have to wait EVEN longer then you..

I am just saying we try our best, we have mini meetings to see how we can improve service and when a customer leaves without giving tips we ask ourselves what happened and how can we do better...

For better service i would suggest NOT asking the person delivering your meal for service, that guy is 100% half dead from serving 10 pounds of food after every return and being hammered with declarations for service already.

Well thanks for your time !!!... if you still don't believe me i am the shortest guy working there =) you can get a hold of me and ask me stuff =)

For the broke and needy (and cold)
By GabrielEscobar of East Van (2 Reviews)

I disagree with the previous reviewer's entry. While I must admit the food is good for the price. However there are many substitutes which are more than comparable. Namingly the two chubby lamb's and chubby cow -all within a 5 minute drive vicinity.

Several friends long time friends had come to San Fran to visit me. And I thought I would introduce them to chinese food other than the usual dim sum. I had made reservations for four guys at 8:45, called to confirm, and arrived at 8:40 to make sure my friends didn't have to wait. Boy was I wrong.

We ended up waiting until 9:30 until we were finally seated. And while I understand that chinese restaurants are often super busy and reservations aren't definite guarantees, I was apalled when the sever had seated three tables of people that just "walked in". The reason why? Because we were four guys, and the lady that had asked for a table was cute.

When we were finally seated, we got no apologies or even acknowledgements that we waited 45 minutes for a reserved table. My advice, bring a hot female friend to this restaurant if you want a table. As a person that has worked in restaurants for seven years, this place is unreal. But not in the good way.
