Being there once for lunch. Food is OK. My friend likes his pasta. Service could be friendlier. Ambience is not bad during lunch hour. It's quieter and not singers.
The night singer must be a volunteer. Volunteer (free labor) means no offering real jobs and no competition. People are mediocre to the best. Quality goes down the drain.
We had heard about this place from a friend, thought it was worth a try, plus there was an ad advertising 3&4 course dinners that looked decent. First impression - the servers didn't seem to know what was going on. We had a reservation, but they seemed ill prepared to receive us. However, the service after we were seated was fine. Our water was topped up, orders taken promptly. The first course was salty. My second course of prawns were lukewarm. I ordered the duck entree, and I think it would've been good if it had been hot, but again, it was lukewarm. One person in our party received an undercooked potato which was inedible. My dessert was creme brulee, normally my favorite, but this too arrived cold, with a too thick layer of sugar on top. During our meal a lady came in off the street and tried to solicit donations from us, then snuck out before any of the staff saw her. Very strange.
My biggest complaint has to be the "entertainment" provided by the singers. If I wanted to hear karaoke, I would go to a karaoke bar. The set up was very amateur, the voice was average, and the choice of music questionable. Seriously, from BeeGees to Julio to a Christmas song, are you kidding me? I could not stop rolling my eyes and laughing with the people I was with. The restaurant was full of what must've been age 55+ people who seemed to enjoy it. Sorry, but this place did not do it for me at all. It's like a kid trying really hard to be an adult...good effort, but really doesn't hit the mark.
I agree with the last few posts about how the service there is HORRIFIC!
My dining partner and I came in just over an hour before closing and ordered from the 3-course and the prime-rib set dinner, both which surpassed my expectations because I knew Queens was another "upscale HK-style cafe" trying to infuse "contemporary westcoast" flavours but their dishes were really unique and tasty.
The issue is how unprofessional the staff here are. I was appalled when I asked our waitress about their policy of refills and she shrugged and said she wasn't sure, then proceeded to YELL across the restaurant which was almost empty by then to the hostess who YELLED back "doesn't matter!". Also the cooks came out several times to casually chat with the girls up front which just looks so bad.
Also for how lovely the ambiance of this restaurant was, their staff really should be trained to be more attentive to detail - little things like offering fresh ground pepper and a simple quality check to see how the food tastes did NOT happen. After trying to flag down our waitress again who was busy eating food in clear sight of the customers, I asked for some water because both our glasses were empty. She said "oh ok" and poured only one glass?! Where is the common sense!
I have eaten at queens several times now. The most recent time I've dined there was last friday. The menu is quite good for the price. I remember ordering a 3 course meal consisting of tomato and some kind of alcohol soup ( i think it was gin ), seafood pasta and cheesecake. The soup and the seafood pasta tasted great, I didn't have enough room to finish the cheesecake, I gave that to my friend. This 3 course meal cost me $17! This restaurant is the kind of place I'd want to take a date that I didn't want to spend much money on but wanted to make it look like I did.
I went there twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. The food was always great, at least 4-star in quality. The Tri-cooked Prawns, in particular, could blow you away. You can't get anything like this anywhere else.
The problem lies in my going there on a Friday evening at 7 pm. When I arrived, a guy was just starting to begin singing golden oldies. His set up was similar to the guy who sings at 7th Heaven Cafe, but this guy played an acoustic guitar instead. However, neither his singing nor his sound system was up to standard, certainly not commensurate with the quality of the food and the ambiance of the place. As a result, I felt that the singing was an annoyance, disturbing my dinner conversation and my enjoyment of the food. Perhaps this was just a personal thing, but the guy at 7th Heaven starts singing at 9:15 pm, after normal dinner hours, so I could concentrate on enjoying the music, rather than try to eat the food with a lot of loud noise (er, music) in the background.
Service attitude was very good both times I was there. However, lunch was not busy (altogether 3 tables), whereas at dinner, the place was 80% full. The two waiters they had could not cope, so service was slow.
This place certainly has potential. I wish it the best.
Came here for a birthday party and they were out of...well, as far as I am concerned, virtually everything. My first order of mussels was responded with a quick "we're out of stock", but it was the next two attempts at ordering food that annoyed me. They were also out, but it took them 20 minutes each to find that out and so 40 minutes in when some of the entrees have already arrived, I was still stuck with no order. Needless to say I just shared an appy and a plate with a friend.
Which also brings me to the point that the entrees don't arrive at the same time which is a minor bluster... not to mention how we saw another party having to carry their own chairs to accommodate their table.
Food is decent, although wholly unimpressive. Pricing is very attractive for the most part - most entrees are running at well under $20. Wine list is extremely short for the clientele it tries to appeal to, which translates to drinking water for the evening and saving the $10 or so.
Not recommended if you're looking for a guarantee of a good time, which means stay away for any parties, dates, etc. lest they become out of half the menu or chairs. Not a terrible choice for a casual evening if you're in the area
Came here with my family and was pretty impressed by the food. It was a quiet night but we didn't mind because the service was very solid. All the attention was focused on us and that made us feel very welcome. The ambience was inviting and simple. The decor wasn't overwhelming at all and made us feel very comfortable. My family ordered the 4 course prix fix meals and pasta combos. We ordered everything from stuffed lobster body to striploins, beef carpaccio, duck risotto. THe menu was really well priced and there was a good variety. I have to say that the food was amazing. For people who are in richmond and are looking for a good meal, you should give this restaurant a try!
The service is bad. The servers are either not trained properly, paid too little, or ... could actually be one of the owners.
A restaurant's main expense is wages (40% of total costs), so if Queen's had better servers, I am sure they would do better.
The food is good at a perfect price point. I like their "set courses". However, what I did not like was that some of the items on the menu were not available.
And, this did was not just one time. It happened multiple different times. I just don't like it when something is on the menu and you can't order it.
As well, the menu always have the same dishes. An ever changing variety would probably bring more customers and retain current customers.
Perhaps, the owner locked in some discounts on the food staples so he has to cook those dishes, in order to save on food costs.
The last time I went to this restaurant, they had a musician singing. I don't think that is a good idea at all, and she was annoying to say the least.
--Service was so bad that I had to make an account to write a review--
We had made reservations to this restaurant a week before, and showed up on time. However, there were several parties in session and I was told to wait. I had to ask how long I would have to wait, only to find out that our table was already ready. I was brought to our table, to find that one table was higher then the other. I tried to pull out my chair, but it was stuck. I realized after a few nudges that the smaller table was some crappy table with high legs, and really had to lift up the chair in order to get it out. Someone at the table actually scraped their leg because it was so hard to get the chair out.
We were seated in the corner, and sat for 20 minutes until we were finally approached. I stated that we still had not been served water as we have been seated for 20 minutes, and her excuse was that they were very busy. If they had a few parties and know they would busy, why else would they still accept reservations?
We proceeded to order. Food came pretty fast. Was salty for the most part. The four of us had the four course menu, and after each dish, came the next at a steady pace. We finished our main course and was waiting for our dessert. The tables next to us had arrived then. They also ordered dessert, some the same thing we had ordered.
I overheard that their tea/coffee cups were not washed properly as they still had lipstick mark on them. I also noticed, a gentleman had to find and carry his own chair to his table.
We waited another 20 minutes, only to see that the waitress was serving the other table their dessert. We waved the waitress over and asked why they were served first. She said she would double check. She came back out with more dessert, only to serve it to other tables again! I asked her yet again, and she said the kitchen screwed up.
Waited another 5 minutes to be served our dessert.
In my opinion, their service definately did not deserve tips (we did give 10% though). The waiters/waitress' were nice in some way, but I think they were too stressed as there were too many tables to serve. Either they should start hiring more people, or don't take as much reservations.
Overall, food was generally salty. Throughout the whole time, music was SUPER loud. People were trying to talk over the music, and then people playing/singing were trying to be louder then them, and so forth. Got to the point at the end that everyone had a headache.
Complained several times about the wait, and was only served water twice. Had to ask several times as well.
Went for a group work dinner to this restaurant. Never heard of it before and certainly wouldn't have noticed it driving by. Had the pork tenderloin in a fig sauce. It was to die for. The meal and desert was excellent. A number of people ordered the linguine and thought it was ok but others who ordered other non linguine also thought the meal was outstanding. Hopefully it survives as it deserves and fills a missing spot in Richmond's diverse cuisine scene. We were the only party in the restaurant which was a bit concerning.
This used to be the old Santa Fe. The awning outside is quite subtle so it's easy to miss but the food here is awesome for the reasonable prices. There's also free parking in the back. I can't stress enough how reasonable the prices are with the amount and quality of the food. My husband ordered the rack of lamb and I ordered the duck which were both to die for. We both had the lobster bisque which is exquisite for the low price of 6.99. Where can you get lobster bisque for 6.99? There is a set menu of 4 courses for 37.99 as well. My friend had the duck risotto and her husband had the pan fried linguine. All the entrees came with an abundance of veggies with a roasted potato. We were all pleasantly surprised with the calibre of the food. We had creme brulee and chocolate souffle for dessert which was heaven in our mouths. We will definitely come back for seconds.
