As a Steveston local I've always walked by this little shop but never felt the urge to pop in before. But alas my friend was in the mood for some curly fries and chicken strips (he's very healthy) and yes they have curly fries so we went in to grab a bite. I ordered the tuna panini which came with chips. Huge mistake.
The chicken strips was actually a very small breaded chicken breast sliced up - it was bland and dry. Fries were more oily than they were crispy but at least the pre-packaged seasoning was good. Now for tuna paninis you'd usually expect the mixture to be with some sort of mayo, green onions, salt/pepper etc...but I kid you not this panini was literally tuna straight from a can still in large chunks with NOTHING else at all added to it, then topped with some funky mozzarella cheese and grilled. Can you imagine paying almost $8 to eat hot tuna from a can? It was accompanied by some stale chips. I barely touched it and the lady didn't even ask why.
This place is really small, one lady running the place from the cash to the cooking (somewhat worrying). You can see right into the "kitchen" aka a freezer and fridge where she pulled out all the stuff to throw into the fryer. The decor itself is not bad, has the quaint deli shop feel right and it's right on the wharf so at least the scenery is nice!
On a related note, the other day friend told me (without me even mentioning my thoughts on this place) that she had ordered a breakfast sandwich from Pierside and they had served her RAW bacon with a stale egg and cheese whiz. I am not surprised! This place needs to use some better ingredients if it wants to boost business.
My girlfriend and i live in Steveston didn’t even realise this deli was there, happy we did, they have all day breakfast, that i love, i had the Joe’s breakfast (named after a fisherman) HUGE BREAKFAST, 2 eggs,2 bacon,2 sausage, 2 toasts, hash browns, fruit for $5.98 WHAT A DEAL, and my girlfriend had a turkey Panini and yam fries the best she ever had by far, they make it all there in fount of you. Neat thing almost everything is one price $5.98 or less, its a simple, GREAT idea, The shop is a little small, but clean, and efficient, one of the best small eateries in Steveston, perfect view, great value and good food.
I've eaten at Pier side deli in Steveston on the docks for about four years now.about once a ..week the owner is one of the friendliest hosts in all of Steveston. She takes the time to get to know all of her customers or as many as she can by name. I recently had the turkey panini and yam fries and a bowl of her excellent homemade chili. The turkey panini is one of the best we've ever had..its hot, crispy and tasty. The yam fries are the best around and you can really taste the yam. As for her homemade chilis well....its outstanding! You can almost always expect to go in and have a new weekly homemade soup, stew or chili....I've never had a bad meal there and the service is friendly and outstanding. I would recommend if you are a local or just visiting Steveston..go to Pier Side Deli...meet the owners, the local fisherman and have an amazing panini!!
