I have been to Pho Lan many times over many years. Something has change?
In the past when a table was cleaned the food leftovers went into the garbage can (which should be expected). The last two times I have been to this restaurant, I notice the left over bean sprouts were not dumped into the garbage when the table was cleaned. Instead they were removed from the table and then place on the back counter. To my surprise they were then delivered to a new customer's table.
The first time I saw this I said to my self "no way" !!!. However I have seen this twice now on two different visits to this location. I am not sure if I will ever go again.
This is both a food safety issue as well as a general hygiene concern. What if the previous customer has Hepatitis or some other disease?. This could be passed on to the next customer.
My God!! Pho Lan what are you thinking???
I am always happy to eat at Pho Lan as the food comes out fast and hot. The best item on the menu is the deep fried spring rolls, hands down. The service is not exceptional, but I don't go there for the service. The food and the prices are very good.
The fried spring roles are the saving grace for this place. I find the soup has too much MSG (I need to drink a litre of water after I leave the place) and the service is a bit off, bordering on grumpy.. The spring rolls keep me coming back, though. Crunchy and tasty. Definitely some of the best I've tried.
When I asked a good friend of mine, where's a good place for noodles in Richmond, he took me for lunch at Pho Lan Beef Noodle Soup, tucked away in the City Center area of Richmond. There is parking and entry from the back of the restaurant. At first glance it looks like it needs some work on the decor, but the noodles, especially the broth was fantastic. If you order the large which cost 7.50, you'll get a bowl that looks like it can easily feed 2-3 people depending on their appetite. There is quite the selection of noodles and other dishes all at a reasonable prices. Vermicelli noodles are mixed with fresh sprouts, cilantro, lemon basil, beef tripe, beef meatballs and slices of beef. Service was efficient and friendly and will definitely be going back.
The first time I had pho was last year in Cambodia (okay not Vietnam, I know) and the aroma was so heavenly.
We decided to come here today because we were hungry and I suggested pho, and he has been here before years ago. Usually you don't get really excited walking in from the parking in the back but the smell was so good before even entering the restaurant. We went through a rather ghostly and narrow passage but found quite a nice atmosphere inside! I felt that the ambiance (decorations) was actually above average compared to other pho places. Unlike other reviewers below, and as an Asian myself, I didn't feel the servers were rude or anything, but just typical of what you'd normally encounter in Asia.
We ordered food, I went to wash my hands, and the food was already here when I was back! My bowl of rare beef (medium) tasted as good as it looked. The beef was actually rare unlike many other places where even if you order rare, it comes cooked. I finished the entire bowl of soup and noodles.
I'd definitely come back but I'd order a small bowl instead...I was soooo full!
last week i went to this restaurant at 9.40 pm.
after i sat the table in 2 minute,
a server came to take my order ,
i told her i am not ready yet.
than she is not happy and told me that they close on 10.00pm.
so i make a quick decide to order my food.
than, during i am having my noodle.(the server might be very rush and can't wait to get off.)
she wept the floor on my frond .
this is really make me piss off.
i can't say the food is not good , i like to go this restaurant .
but now i have to think do i really have to go the restaurant like this?
i heard about this place from alot of friends and i decided to stop by for lunch today. what i been hearing about this place was dont go there its messy or dont go there the service is bad. what i experienced today was pretty much normal from where i came from (northwest) however the service was a little bit cold but over all i thought the place was pretty warm and cozy. i went to check in the washroom and it wasn't that bad, you cant expect a bright and fancy washroom from this place but it wasn't that messy like other had discribe, it was clean there wasn't any water on the ground so i guess the whole "everywhere is wet" thing is pretty much a myth. i enjoyed my lunch and i was actually satisfy with the service and the food was just OUTSTANDING fair amount of msg. i wasn't expecting to give 15% tip but in this situation i just cant resist also i cant leave without saying thanks to the chef for a great lunch and the owner for a great deal.
The man sitting at the front counter never smile. He is unfriendly and cares only to collect your money. The kitchen and washroom are dirty. Just go to the back and take a look. Look at the floor too. Make sure you don't slip and fall because it is so greasy. The restaurant is located in a convenient location, across from the City Hall. Food comes fast. Be aware.
Few years ago, if we don't have choice for vietnamese food, i think Pho Lan is the best in richmond. i don't know if they change the owner of not, but as always, the gentleman serve us without smile..they not appreciate their customers , not even welcome you to come. If someone want Pho. Try Pho 99 (alexandra road and garden city). i love Pho 99's soup broth .the place is so clean, very good services too. I just come there yesterday as usual.
Pho Lan really need to improve to win back their customers
Lan's Restaurant by far has the best Pho' in Richmond. Eventhough I still agree that the Golden Train Express probbaly makes the best Pho is the whole Eastern Vancouver Region, this place is amazing. Its family ownded and you get a really good feel to it when you go in. Although i do admit that the place may not look the cleanest but its all about the FOOD! The people are really nice, they will describe everything to you if needed and their Spring Rolls are amazing! Its packed with so much filling and so crispy on the ouside. The Pho is by far the best especially their #7 and their Large is the biggest i have ever seen. That is the only place i go for Pho' in Richmond. This place is always busy with students, families bascially you name it. Its located in central Richmond (#3 Road) directly across from Richmond City Hall and Richmond Centre. This place is a MUST TRY!!! It's absolutly amazing! The service is great and eventhough in the summer it might get a bit hot in there when its really crowded but its totally worth breakin that sweat over a #7 Large and 2 Pork Spring Rolls!!!
Hey this place has pretty good food for a big soup kind of meal! The ambience unfortunately does Suck! and you wonder how clean the joint really is. They have made an effort to clean it up in the last few months. They also only take cash which is a pain. (They may have changed this -- not sure!) The service is very unpredictable. They are super busy though! Seems everyone and their uncle goes here!
