Busy bubble tea cafe in Richmond. Serves Taiwanese snack food as well.
Came here for dinner a few weeks ago with my boyfriend, and we both had the worst experience ever. First of all, we were placed in the corner of the restaurant, behind a wall. We were pretty much hidden, and it was hard to grab the waitresse's attention. When we were finally able to flag them down, I ordered the Milk Seafood Udon and my boyfriend ordered the Spicy Hotpot, and we shared a milk tea. As well, my boyfriend asked for a glass of water. The food took forever to come (we waited maybe half an hour?), and we never got our glass of water, so we tried asking another waitress. We waited and watched her, and she ignored our request, so we asked another waitress, and again our request was ignored. We noticed that a waitress was at the table behind the little brick wall thing, so my boyfriend glanced over at her and got her attention. We sat back and waited for her to come to our table after she was done with theirs. Sadly enough, she ignored us. Later on, we asked our original waitress for a glass of water AGAIN, and AGAIN we were ignored. It makes me wonder how hard it is to get a glass of water. In the end, we FINALLY managed to get a nice waitress who GLADLY got us a cup of water... but to our disbelief, the cup was like one of those small tea cups. We left almost no tip that night, and left very unsatisfied. It's pretty ridiculous having to ask 4 waitresses for water, and getting ignored by the rest.
There's always a long line up at this place. I ordered the pork chop rice and a lemon red tea with coconut jelly. The pork chop was sliced too thin, I felt like I was eating a piece of deep fried dough. I have also tried the beef hot pot, the soup base is quite good, a little on the sweet side, but again, the pieces of beef are so small, I hardly noticed them at all.
The drinks are good, but i think they are overpriced; around 4.75-5.50 for a drink without tips.
The service is fast and efficient, and the waitresses have a great memory.
I will go back to this place for the drinks.
Well, what do you expect o a BBT place? Yeah, you get bubble tea, and this place also offers some food. But ultimately, you come for the bubble tea. which - is just decent. It doesn't wow me.
There's just simply TOO MANY people ordering take-out on a Friday or Saturday night. if you get a table near the bar where staff are making drinks, or if you get a table near the cash register, be prepared to be SURROUNDED by people ordering take-out drinks, which leads too nobody noticing customers near the tables, and well, just a general lack of ambiance.
At least, if you order take out from Well Tea, you won't block other people who are sitting in the restaurant enjoying their drink.
Hey Pearl Castle: a suggestion; if you have a cash register and order-taking near the DOOR, rather than at the back of the restaurant, it will improve your ambiance, and your restaurant won't always be so crowded that we never want to come!
Probably has the best bubble tea in richmond. Mango slush is soo good. My girlfriend and I always order it when we go.
The food is decent though, and it never really fills me up.
But overall, very good.
The snacks are awesome, but I will have to say that their noodle soups, the soup tastes like msg mixed in water. No real flavour to it.
However, its always packed, so if you dont like waiting half an hour for a table, this place is not for you.
good to go if ure into small portions and over priced bubble teas....i find that the crowd that occupies this place are mainly rich kids who dnt hav anything else better to do. i wonder wat it is about these places? go and try out the hotpot beef stew, its good, plus its somthing different. same thing, go early during dinner time or reserve a table that might or might not b reserved for u.
Certainly not my choice for coming back. My friends and I were doing our usual restaurant hopping and decided to try this place out. I got the honey green tea cause I figure it a safe bet. It was sastisfactory at most. My friend unfortunately got their oolong milk tea. I tried it and we were both disappointed. She's loves oolong tea and what they served her was anything but. It was bland and you can't taste the tea, purely milky powder. I guess it would pass for someone used to more powder than the real stuff. My other friend ordered their marianated beef or something that looked like beef - really dry and bland. If you want something better, move on. The atmosphere was the best thing about this place. The decor was great, the servers were good too if you're a guy I guess.
Consistently decent food and drinks. Love the side dishes. The atmosphere is nice. It's always busy here.
One downside? Three times we came, trying to order shaved ice and they were out of ice. Um, isn't there ice in the bubbletea? Can you not make shaved ice out of that? I guess they don't have the machine for it, and they merely order flaked ice by the bag? Oh well.
This place is so asian, I love it.
I love drinking bubble tea, and every time I go to a new tea place, I'd order a pearl milk tea to try as a test, coz it'd tell me how good their drink is. It never fails. And I can honest say their pearl milk tea is my favorite in all of Vancouver. Me and my friends also enjoy eating their food as it offers good value and taste. Be prepared when you go there as it often has line-up anytime in the day...Enjoy it~
I've eaten at restaurants all around the world, but I must say that I absolutely enjoyed the overall experience of Pearl Castle Cafe. First, their bubble teas are great and the variety of drinks surprised me (it took me ten minutes to decide, ha). Second I really like the decor. Its not anything super special, but its a modern look that is simple and functional and comfortable. Third I thought that the food was really tasty. I ordered the beef pot and the beef was tender and the broth full of flavor. I had no problems with the service. I loved it that you are not rushed, even though there are usually long lines to get in. Its an awesome place to talk (not too loud) with friends and enjoy the food. You've gotta try it!
I went here today for lunch.
I ordered the Botany Chicken Hot Pot and my friend the Ginseng Chicken Hot Pot. (both $8.95)
I ordered udon noodles for extra $2 to come with my hot pot not knowing that they already included rice in the price.
Note: don't order the udon or the vermicilli as the big bowl of rice is plenty. I just thought I was adding to the hot pot. Plus $2 extra for a very small amount of udon is a crime.
The food was very tasty but there was not that much chicken. The meat was all the drumstick part of the chicken but it was all cut up so I ended up with tons of the end of the drumstick with just the cartilage, no meat.
The service is slow but at least the wait staff are very pleasant and smile a lot - more so than most Chinese restaurants in Richmond.
The place is very clean, furniture is modern and the restaurant has lots of good lighting and looks very spacious and airy.
All in all, I would go back but I just wouldn't order the same dish again b/c of the lack of chicken. There were other dishes I saw them bring out that looked tasty and more value for the money, especially the fried rice dishes.
I am not really a big fan of bubble teas. I come here mostly for the food of Taiwanese taste. The set meals on the menu is quite a bargain. For less than $10, you can leave the restaurant very happy and satisfied. I often would order one more bowl of rice in addition to the one included in the meal, because the main dish and the 3 little side dishes altogether are simply too sumptious and delicious. It's actually like two meals to me. They serve Taiwanese sausages and smelly tofu too, har. One of my kids' favourite is the fried spicy chicken, though it's too much for me. They offer a large assortment of cool drinks, but I enjoy their hot brews in those glass teapots the most. My only complaint is their slow service, though the girls all try to look at their prettiest and tidiest and they can be quite sweet. Oh, yes, it's a bit cheaper too if you order it as take-away's.
I think the title tells all. We waited there for one hour without seeing our food. First, we waited 30 min. before we first asked the restaurant. We were given a lame execuse - "our food is prepared fresh." We waited for another 30 min. and nothing happened. We finally decided to leave the restaurant, and they not only offered no apologies but also charged us for one drink that we ordered. We will never go there ever again.
This taiwanese girl was serving our table and she was one of those high school 'barbies'. Most of the time she would just socialize with her friends. My sister ordered a drink with grass jelly and they gave her grape jelly. my pearls were a little soggy and the drink was a little watered down. my friend on the other hand had the 'best drink', and it was nothing compared to the bbt at bbworld. my sisters bf had to wait 30 mins for his fried rice to come. 30 mins for fried rice and there were several egg shells in it when it arrived. overall, i would eat there again, maybe once every 2 months.
My friend, a Richmond local, took us to Pearl Castle and I really liked it! There are 2 menus: an extensive drink menu and a food menu. Depending on what you order, the drinks can be pricey, but my drink ("Floating Ice" - milk, coconut, and ice cream) was really delicious. I also ordered rice with Taiwanese meat sauce ($4.95) and wasn't expecting much, but was impressed with the generous portion which included accompanying side dishes (spicy tofu, fresh broccoli with dressing, and some bok choy), and dessert of a single cream puff.
The atmosphere was bright and fun. Also, our server was really nice, friendly and helpful. It's clearly a popular place, so be prepared to line up and wait a bit on Friday/Saturday evenings.
I would definitely go back and recommend the place to others!
I used to be a regular, but suddenly, the staff turned sour, and the food bland. And did the prices go up too or is it just me?
I was appauled by the service I recieved last time I went. It was fairly empty when I arrived (3 other small tables were filled). The waitresses took FOREVER to take our orders, some where chatting in the hallways, others seemed to just ignore us. After about 10 minutes of trying to waive someone over, we just walked up and gave our orders. It was very frustrating, especially for a hungry person!
The drinks I find now are a bit overpriced, and water comes in tiny cups that after asking to have refilled when food is served, is completed after a meal is finished. I think the food also used to taste better. Something is definitely wrong with their sweet and sour sauce, it was sweet and incredibly salty. Other food was normal, but smaller portioned? Atleast the side dishes were a little skimpy that day.
I'm not sure if I'll try going again, perhaps only because its open very open for a non-take out meal and theres nothing else available. I hope they step up their act!
Pearl Castle is one of my favorite bubble tea place. The drinks are great and the food is pretty good. My favorite is the hot pot. The downside is the wait for a table. A lot of ppl go there, not just the younger generation. I see a family of 4 with their kids, an older couple, group of teenagers, etc. The service is ok. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, depending on the server you get. Highly recommend it if you don't mind the wait.
"Hi, I'm Sabin, and I'm addicted to Pearl Castle...."
Yeah, sometimes I think there should be a group for us who religiously go to Pearl Castle. However, I do believe there are reasons why we do...
Bubble tea wise, it's one of the best ones around. The quality of their drinks very, very, very rarely fall below certain standards. Unless I try something radically new and by the off-chance I get something I don't like, I was never near dissatisfied.
Food is another plus here, I guess that's why the 'cafe' word. Ever since it reopenned a few years ago, the food menu has completely changed for the better. You can expect to order a meal and get side dishes and even a small desert to go with it. And these meals are pretty good...to the point that I had 4 meals there in 3 days. Then again, it might just be me...
Service wise, I have to admit it's actually marginal. If you're lucky, they'll actually smile and look at you when taking your order. That's the level of service I feel basic food service should at least have...The only reason I give them a 4 out of 5 is that virtually all employees are girls and most of them are pretty cute...Biased? Yes, but I'm sure a lot of guys would agree that cute girls as waitresses makes a world of difference.
Finally, the surroundings are now much brighter and the chairs much more comfortable than before. The atmosphere is great just as the surroundings.
As a final note, beware of Friday and Saturday nights, this place is packed! You could however order take-out, they even take orders over the phone so you can just come pick it up. Yes, I'm that big of a fan of this place...
