My gf and I decided to catch the Canucks playoff game here just to shake things up a bit and try something different. Ambiance is that of a chain driven theme but it was very casual and lacked the showiness. TVs were plentiful and at good locations mkaing for easy viewing.
Our salt and pepper wings were at best average. It was a little on the dry end and resembling too much like the frozen store bought variety with a thick yet finely coat of seasoning. We shared the Memphis rib plate and other than the tangy bbq sauce the ribs were pretty good for a non-bbq/rib joint. The rack was tender and with a fair amount of meat on them. The side of fries and coleslaw was also quite serviceable.
Service was a bit sparce and we would've liked a couple more automatic checkups for refills but our server was friendly. Again, whiffs of bar influence were present but they could've done a little better.
All in all it was better than expected and would be a decent place for a game.
It must be a tough market to be in: generic pub food, burgers fries, wings, sandwiches, etc. Nothing really to set yourself apart yet Original Joes DOES do something different. With a sandwich they offer two sides instead of just one. It seems so "who cares" yet I like having the option. Salad and fries? Heck yes!
I had their version of the Clubhouse sandwich. It was good enough, but not super memorable. As far as service goes, there were a couple services doing an amazing job and we wished we were in their section. Our server was adequate and no real complaints, only that she did not check up on us and I had to flag her down to get a steak knife for my partner.
Looks a great place to catch a playoff game or UFC event. Lots of great TV's and large screens. Some terrific pictures of local landmarks too.
I would go back should I feel inclined. I wonder if they will accept reservations for April 30th, 2011?
I stopped by here on a Saturday, was pretty quiet in the afternoon, but, service as still good. They didn't get complacent. Drinks were refilled, food came up quickly. I had a Burger which came out really hot. The toppings on it looked pretty fresh. The Bacon on the burger was pretty crispy too, which was nice. Our Server was friendly and on top of everything. Bathrooms were very clean too. Lots of parking, TV's were everywhere so you could watch from anywhere. It's always nice to go somewhere where the people who work there don't look stressed out and over worked.
We recently had an opportunity to try this place on a Friday evening. The restaurant was busy but we were seated promptly. Like Kitchen Devil - we had heard mixed reviews on this place so our expectations were on guard.
We were pleasantly surprised by the food and equally impressed with the service. We enjoyed the Halibut and Chips and their Beef Dip (both recommended by our server). The Joes lager was a also enjoyable. The only glitch was that the fries were somewhat cool - and our server brought a plate of fresh ones right away.
This is a GREAT and welcome addition to this area and we'll B back!
We went there not expecting much because our friends had said it was just ok, and it was just that. The food good for it's price but nothing amazing, the casual atmospher was cool. The great part about it was the televisions, awesome view to watch the games no matter where you are sitting. I would go there again just because of the service. As a waiter i always expect the service that i serve at. However the service here was awesome. The waitress was on the ball (Melissa) she was there as soon as we finished our drinks to get us refils and she actually cared about us; maybe it was because she wants a good tip but who cares, the service was still amazing.
We could be food critics. We dine out at least two to three times a week and when we hit a winner i want everyone to know. I have to say this place was a great first impression. We were acknowledged right away and 20 ounce beers were delivered promptly. When we looked at the large menu it was hard to decide but when ordering you have a choice of two sides.Cajun chicken with Fries/gravy and salad. It was a big plate. All very fresh. She had a grill chicken with two salads. The macaroni salad was not from a bucket. The place was open and inviting. The waitresses are nice to look at also. This will be a regular hang out and i hope they keep up the good work.
We stopped by here on Sunday for lunch. It was not extremely busy so we were told to seat ourselves (which I actually prefer). We seated ourselves and waited for a while for menus to be brought to us. We were told that there was no kids menu which is fine but they said they had appies and sides that were kid friendly. I ordered a burger with yam fries and coleslaw. The burger was decent and the coleslaw was good. The yam fries were also good but a little spicy and my daughter had one and had to drink a lot to cool the burn off. My wife had teriyaki burger with "poutine" and a "mango" pasta salad. The poutine was a coagulated pile of french fries, cheese (probably Monterey Jack) and gravy. Poutine has to be made with fresh curds to get the right consistency otherwise, it's just a mess. For the pasta salad, we did uncover a few tidbits of mango but not enough to even taste it. Again, they added chilil pepper spice to the pasta salad so my daughter couldn't eat that either.
The service was okay. The staff was courteous and somewhat attentive. Our table needed to be cleaned again though because it had some sticky sauce still on it from the previous diners. My wife ordered a tea and the mug had coffee drips still on the outside of the mug so we had to ask for a new mug (which was a little cleaner but not by much). The table beside us had to ask for a new side plate because it was dirty. I didn't think a place that we only a few months old would be running into dishwasher problems already.
The atmosphere was nice and clean. The only problem my wife had was when she went to use the washroom, the stall was so dimly lit, she could barely see. Maybe they just had a burned out potlight but you would think they would check on things like that.
All in all, the food was okay but definitely not a place for families. Which is odd that they chose Steveston to open up because this area has primarily residents with young families. I will probably go back to try their wings at some point but with a couple of buddies instead of the family.
If you want a place for a few pints, some appies and watch a game then this is a good place for you.
