Best xiao long bao's in town!
By foodfanatic of South Vancouver (286 Reviews)

They make the best one's I've ever had so far in the Greater Vancouver Region. Try the regular xiao long bao's--juicy soup, not just the old pork sauce, and really well-made thin skin/wrap for these soup dumplings--it's like popping peanuts into your mouth--I just want to keep going & never stop until my stomach screams in protest. The special crab version just costs more for smthing that is inferior to the regular pork one. The king crab dinners are superb & generally one of the best bargains in town when it's in season. Don't order the set dinner menu stuff since they incl. a deep fried sweet & sour fish that's horrible. Everything else is pretty tasty. From brunch, lunch to dinner, I never get tired of coming here for the food as the highlight is the xiao long bao, but the soy drink/soup is good as well as the lighter fried rice cakes with preserved veggies or cabbage or what have you as I tend to avoid the soy sauce/brown version that's extra greasy in any Shanghai restaurant in comparison. They don't seem to cheat you on your king crab legs/orders either like some places (*cough* Empire @ the London Drugs Plaza *cough*).

Quality food offered at relatively bargain prices! I've enjoyed almost everything they have to offer since they opened up several yrs ago replacing the previous "So Che" restaurant in this unit. Some parking at the crowded parkade at the back, otherwise, it's the usual paid street parking outside.

Of course, reservations are always recommended and sometimes a necessity.

They cheat! Don't go!

We were a group of 4 went there for lunch today. When we were ordering. I ask the server about the shark fin soup. She told us, it is very small and not enough for 4 of us, so I told her we do not want the shark fin. I also ask her to repeat the order to me. Couple minutes later, the soup came and I told her I did not order that. She said she was not sure we place the order or not. My husband did not want her to have a hard time with the manager so we accept the soup but I was not happy. When the bill came, it is around 75.00 and since we did not have any small change, we paid 80.00 and did not expect any change back, but when we were ready to leave, the manager came to me and said, the tip is not included in their bill. In other words, they are not going to give the five dollar back and also they want me to pay more because 5 dollar is not enough for the tip. I don't mind to pay a good tip if the service is good but this restaurant is not. First I accept the wrong order and did not complain or return the soup to the kitchen, second they did not change me the five dollar, I believe tip is not mandatory in Vancouver. I just read some other reviews about this restaurant that they do not give the change back. I think this is not right, as a business, you have to give the change back to the customer first before they tip you. You cannot assume whatever change is a tip and even dare to ask for more before you change the customer! There are lots of restaurant in Richmond, their food is just average so I will never go back to them because they chat to their own customers!

Pretty good

We went there late one night because we felt like steamed juicy Shanghainese buns and Top Shanghai was too crowded. Ordered the buns as well as many other dishes. The restaurant was mostly empty because it was late.

The buns are really good. I wouldn't say they're the best in Vancouver because I still like Top Shanghai's buns better. But the steamed buns at this place is nothing to sneeze at either! On top of that, one order gives you two baskets, so we accidentally ordered 4 baskets (oops!). Definitely good value for the buns.

The other dishes were okay. We got the sweet and sour rock cod with pine nuts. It was decent tasting but nothing special. The fried rice and beef dish were also just average, but large portion size. Servers were friendly and we traded some jokes regarding the accidental over order of the buns.

Definitely would recommend this restaurant for the buns.

Delicious Dumplings

Even after the supposed lunch rush, it was still busy at 1:30pm. We waited for nearly 15 mins for a table which isn't too bad. We only ordered about 4 dishes. First it was the cold dish, chicken and glass noodles dish which was tasted a tad on the bland side. Not sure what the sauce was but I think it was a version of a light peanut sauce. Then it was steamed 'soupy' dumplings which are too die for and piping hot, so careful! The pickled veggie and pork meat noodle dish was light and the hot and sour soup was very spicy. The service was off today. You would think that since we were all sharing that they would bring bowls for us. It took awhile each time we waved them down to refill our tea. Overall, I think it's still one of the better Shanghai style restaurants that is combination of good food set in a clean and comfortable environment

Explosive Steamed Dumplings!
By DavidLee of Richmond, Vancouver (25 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, July 13, 2007 - 7:59pm [Dine in]

I've been here a couple times now for lunch and both visits have been great!

They really deserve the title "Best steamed dumplings in Vancouver" because they are absolutely delicious! The juices literally explode out of the dumpling when you bite it so it's best that you toss the whole thing in your mouth so that the juices can gush around your mouth, otherwise your partner might lose an eye! Haha be warned though when it first comes it's piping hot so don't eat it right away of you'll regret it!
Every dish was good as well. Hot & Sour soup, Sticky Rice, Fried Donut, most of it was excellent! The only dish I didn't devour was the Spicy Wonton, which wasn't spicy, a little bit disappointed but who cares when there's so many other mouth-watering dishes on the table!

Service was nothing special, they didn't really bother talking to us other than ordering and we had to call them over more than once for water and other miscellaneous things but they were there when we needed them so it's not too bad.

The place wasn't too classy or anything, just what you would expect from a good chinese restaurant.

Our bill came up to less than $30 for 2 people, but we eat a lot so it was very reasonable! Usually our bill averages to be much higher at various other places.

Highly recommended! (Next time I'm gonna try the King Crab!)

xiao long bao!

nice restaurant.. the place is small so the tables are pretty much close together, had a hard time moving around. service was horrible, i guess its because they were busy? but still... it shouldn't take someone to call them 4-5 times before they come to your table.

The food that impressed me were their xiao long bao, appetizers (beef tripe), and peking duck. the others were just ok. but yea definitely try their xiao long baos.

King crab dining extravaganza

You have to hit this place during Alaskan king crab season. The place was packed and we made sure to make a reservation. We ordered one crab and had it served in three courses - steamed legs with garlic, salt and chili fried shoulders and rice served in the shell. Incredible! The service was fantastic. They came around with clean plate and steamed towels frequently. A worthy dining experience. Try the Peking duck and the seafood fried rice - also to die for!

Good Food, Bad Service.

My family and I went here for lunch today, and we found the food very tasty. Tables were a little too crowded for my liking, but the most fatal problem with this restaurant is its service. There were two managers I guess, and one had really good manners, and served us very well. The younger manager though, is rude, and seems to want to rush us through our meal. He took our menu away when we asked for him to leave it so we could look for ordering more dishes, he kept our teapot empty, and shoved the bill at us even if we didn't ask for it (I would've forgiven him if there was a queue out the door, but there wasn't). Such service ofcourse, doesn't deserve as much tips as I usually pay, so I paid about half the tips I usually pay, since the restaurant doesn't require a minimum tip. Sadly, as our family left the restaurant, the young manager sniggered at us, as if it was cheap of us to give the tip amount. I wanted to debate with him and tell him that the whole meaning of giving tips was for the gratitude of service given to us at restaurant, but I figured doing so and engaging in an argument would just disturb everybody else in the restaurant, so I chose to leave, and share my thoughts with everyone here. I suggest that if anyone wants to eat at this place, to give some patience, and look for the friendly employees, and hereby also suggest the owner to find some workers that are actually worth the salary.

Not sure

The food is usually good. My problems: I had a dish with minced crab meat topped on broccoli.. but it wasn't crab meat, it was shrimp and the price was very expensive. That season, crab was very expensive so I can understand the change but then they should inform us and/or at least lower the price. That was a total rip off.
Another pain, they never bring back the change. The couple of times I went, the change I would of got back was what I was going to leave as a tip so it didn't hurt me BUT they should always bring it back so I can CHOOSE to leave it there. I'm afraid to go there if I don't have "exact change."

I am disappointed that they cheat

Northern Dynasty has always been a favorite Chinese place for me. They sell lots of king crab. I have eaten king crab there many times. One of the reason is that they have always been quite honest with this dish, meaning, they will show you a crab, you will get that crab and every bit of it.

Last night, however, I was very disappointed that they are no longer practicing the honest game. I was shown a king crab that weigh 8.75 lbs. When the dish showed up, many parts were missing. Most notably the body of the crab, not one piece showed up. Business is very good at this place, there is really no need for them to have this practice.
