New owners - poor PHO
By craftsman of Burnaby (2 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, September 25, 2010 - 4:44pm [Dine in]

Eating good Pho is something that I've taken for granted in the GVRD. There are sooo many good Pho places around especially in Richmond. Nooch Pho has recently changed owners and has changed their menu.

Was the change for the better or worse? It depends on how Chinese you want your Pho!

While they still have the "standard" raw beef or cooked beef Pho, they now have BBQ-Duck and Wonton soup... The soup base is decidedly Chinese.

If you are looking for Authentic Pho, this ain't the place to get it. If you want more of a Chinese flavour to your beef noodle soup, then maybe.

Ok, so after reading all the wonderful reviews on this Vietnamese restaurant my boyfriend and I were dying to try it out - we actually tried to go there twice before - first time it wasn't open yet (the place opens at noon) and second time it was a Sunday and they are closed Sundays.

Third time's a charm though, and upon entering the empty restaurant we were promptly greeted by the server who was sitting with the owner making cut-outs for the place probably because it was during quieter hours. I was very amused by how unique the ambiance and layout of the restaurant was, it is most certainly refreshing but I'm not sure if I like the whole open-kitchen thing because you literally see everything about how your food is prepared. I really liked how the Food Network was playing on their giant screen TV to the backdrop of classical music though, pretty awesome, and they had lots of little interesting decor.

The owner unenthusiastically took our order - shrimp salad rolls, rare beef pho and spring rolls. He also cooked everything (a little odd because the server just sat there and there is no cook, family owned I suppose). I didn't really understand why he was being so grumpy to my bf and I, maybe because we look young but we sure know how to tip when it's deserved...anyway I didn't think much about this until a new customer walked in and I IMMEDIATELY saw a change in attitude from the staff, it was so strange. They perked up and almost forcefully yelled good afternoon like they do in Japanese restaurants (think "mushi mushi!") and when the new customer ordered they yelled the order back and forth to each other, just like in some Japanese restaurants. What the hell? They definitely didn't do that for our order, and it made us feel really uncomfortable, why were they suddenly so enthusiastic only when more people started to roll in?

About the food, I totally understand what the previous reviews meant about how their pho tastes "unique" but being half-vietnamese the secret is that they just use more star anise in their broth which gives it a very pungent licorice taste - something that I actually didn't really enjoy after the first few bites. The salad roll was beautifully presented with a modern flair but the shrimp in it was pathetic! I understand there is a difference between shrimp and prawns, but most of the time salad rolls come with prawns, so this shrimp salad roll literally had about 4 teeny tiny colorless fishy tasting shrimps in it. Good thing the peanut dipping sauce was good so I just doused it in that.

Anyway needless to say my experience may have just been an odd one out, but it still stands, they deserve the good credit but I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon.

Pho with a twist

I've been dying to try this place out for a while now. Everytime I went, they were closed. (They are closed on Sundays and holidays). I almost gave up on trying this place but I am glad I didn't.

I came here for a late lunch on a Friday with a friend. Their menu is very limited compared to other vietnamese restaurants with only a few rice dishes, pho and dry noodles. My friend ordered the noodle combo with beef brisket pho and the combo comes with 2 tiny springrolls, a small salad, and a pop for $8. I ordered the grilled chicken pho. The salad was fresh and the spring rolls were tasty, but too oily. A new staff was being trained so I guess they didn't drain the oil long enough after frying the spring roll but no big deal as they have unlimited napkins for us to soak up the oil.

Then came the pho served in a big white bowl. The portion is pretty big and the soup is quite tasty. It is a bit different than regular pho soup which I can't quite put my finger on, but I think some spice was added that made it unique. And there was definitely no msg because I wasn't at all thirsty afterwards. The beef brisket is also better quality than the brisket served at other viet restaurants.

Service wise, it was alright. A new staff member was being trained so he was a bit slow but he was friendly. The restaurant is probably the cleanest and most modern viet restaurant i've been to, although I did find the chairs uncomfortable as there was no back support.

Would I come back? Yes definitely.

We tried Nooch Pho the other day based on all of the reviews here, and it was excellent!

We started off with the salad roll, and can I just say YUM?! I have never seen salad rolls presented so nicely, and they tasted out of this world. I got the beef and brisket pho, and it was very good. Spend the extra $1 to get the spicy soup base. I tried it and it was amazing.

The restaurant is like a bit like a pho bar. You can watch the people make your food as you're sitting on these tall stools. The people who work there are very friendly and polite. I love everything about this place and will definitely be back!

I came here one evening with my mom and younger brothers. We arrived around 6:30 and the place was empty. The menu was pretty simple, with the basic noodles and side items.

We all ordered the beef ball noodle and it came in this huge bowl. It was presented very nicely, with the bean sprouts, carrots, etc. t didn't have the typical "Vietnamese" noodle taste I'm so use to. But it was tasty and filling. The service was friendly and quick. I may come back, but my family craves the salty msg noodles instead.

CLean place for pho

Submitted Monday, October 19, 2009 - 10:21pm [Dine in]

like everybody else tried to visit nooch a few time with out success cuz its always close. Finally it was open for us to try.

first impression, yes its clean..cleaner than most pho places.
classical music blasting in the background, the food network showing on the tv.

we were the only customers at this point. menu was limited, so easy enough to try variety of dishes. we started with the spring rolls....they are ok but the oil it was deep fried in was very old. which makes the spring rolls greasy and left an unappetizing taste to our taste buds.

i had the viet sandwich next.... small and so so. had better and bigger sandwich from other restaurant.

pho beef noodle is next. WAY too much star anise. just over powers the soup and also too much diakon radish taste. yes it is "UNIQUE"

we weren't too impressed with our meal. we probably wont come back to this place.

Nice Little Pho Place
By Pooky of Richmond (15 Reviews)

Food: This is not your ordinary Pho place. The food is presented elegantly, and the pho comes with a huge wooden ladle that you can use as a spoon. The soup base itself is quite different from other Pho places, but it has a pleasant flavour. As an added bonus, they use no msg here!

Service: Not much to comment on here. The service was pretty good. I think it's a family run restaurant.

Value: I think that the price is roughly on par with other Pho restaurants. They give pretty big portions. I feel that the elegant presentation and the wooden ladle experience are worth it.

Ambiance: It's clean inside. Very small restaurant though. There are no tables to sit at. It is stool seating. They basically have a counter along the window, and a counter along the open kitchen. I would have concerns about bringing a large group here.

soul warming pho

It took a bit to find this place as I thought it was near the chinese mall area near No. 3, but it was actually hidden away on Garden City and Capstan in a nondescript mini-mall.

I was not disappointed. The soup was simple and clean as advertised. I also like that it was non-oily. All pho prices are only $6 and you can also request a spicy soup for an extra $1 which I will definitely try next time. I would have liked extra basil, but the overall blend of flavours was well balanced.

It was pretty quiet when I went, but I got very warm vibes. I like the bar stool bar type of set up as it feels like a lot like how the fast food places that I see in asian dramas might be like. Just simple plain good food for the average joe.

Someone else ordered the grilled chicken sandwich which sounded really good too. Rounded out with an iced coffee and free fortune cookies, it was a pretty yummy lunch.

Great for a dark and dreary rainy Vancouver day.

To anyone who thinks this is above 2 stars.

Submitted Monday, November 16, 2009 - 6:51pm [Dine in]

All the reviews i see on here that are ABOVE two stars i now have HUGE suspision that you are either the owner/friends/family of this small pho shop.
After seeing the reviews on this site i decided to come to try, and yes, attempted to come 4+ times all closed, so finally today i finaly get to see the hype.
Huh? Hype? I DO NOT understand why this place got reviews about 2 stars... Ordered a Club House Pho, and a Rare Beef Pho, soup base the some (obviously), and a Deep Fried Tofu. Soup was clear, but tasted more like a funny water than a NICE bowl of Pho, i needed alot of hoisin sauce to make it even palatable. Alot of meat (ALOT!) but the rare beef was too rare (or too cold) or the soup was not hot enough because it didnt cook all the way through when i left meat in there. Even after the last bite of noodles (which were terrible) the beef was not NEARLY cooked all the way through (btw i dont mind eating raw beef and stuff but i think people should have an option on the doneness before they decide to eat their beef... i mean instead of raw and slightly less raw.) But i have to admit, the beef was pretty juicy and yum... The first few anyways. Noodles were average (average as in instant noodle average). No extra plate of bean sprouts :c, no tea, no water (well i never asked for it but i mean its pho... i think they should just serve it.)

Now to the tofu. For $2 its a decent price for the 3 fried tofu's we got. Sauce on the bottom was good, presentation was nice (odd actually. Using stacks). Taste was good. But you can really mess up fried tofu lol.

Aside from the food ambience was okay. Like another review said, its like ikea. Service was solid, but probably only because its a small restaurant and we were the only ones there.

So let me remind all of you reading. If you are looking for PHO, do NOT go here, soup is tasteless, meat was eh, although you get alot of meat theres no balance, noodles boring. If the only reason it tastes like this is because there is no MSG i dont give two @!#$ because this taste is absolutly terrible.

This is a great little pho spot. The soup base is light and flavourful. You can definitely tell that they don't use msg. The vermicelli with chicken was also very tasty. Service was also very good. Seats are on tall bar stools, which aren't very comfy, but the discomfort is soon forgotten after the food arrives.

A total joke

Passing by a few times, i decided to try this restaurant. However, in my opinion, most good Viet restaurants r usually the hole in the wall ones that DO NOT overcharge like Nooch. THanks for pointin that out Chawan...

Somehow, i already expected this restaurant to be a rip- off. I dont care about the looks of a restaurant. However, i ordered a pho, which was tasteless, filled with daikon(VIETNAMESE?), undercooked meatballs, carrots n other stuff u normally wouldnt find in a normal viet pho. The coffee tasted bitter, but had no fragrance or distinct taste that you'd find in a viet coffee. Being a chinese, i immediatly knew that the owner was up to something, tryin to fool all those who've nver tried pho. i even heard him speak cantonese to his little son and wife before drivin off in their mercedes. Not to be full myself, but workin in a job that pays more than a restaurateur, i wouldnt even think of buyin more than i hv. Afterwards, i stupidly decided to give the spring rolls n pork sandwich a try. The spring rolls had so much shrimp it literally disgusted me. The pork in the pork sandwhich was so tough that even a tiger would hv trouble chewin it. Wt made it even more humorous was that the owner/chef was cookin it on a expensive lookin grill which was an absolute joke, considering how bad the grilled pork jerky turned out. Another joke was that he even had a BIG flatscreen TV mounted on top, which showed cooking lessons. He should either hv his customers change the channel so he could pay more attention to cookin and not make shrimp rolls, pork jerky sandwich, and bland chinese rice noodles OR he should sell of his TV.

DO NOT COME HERRE IF U R LOOKIN FOR TRUE VIETNAMESE FOOD,
I surely hope this restaurant will close down due to its inauthentic food and the owner's greed, squandering money on his car, grill, tv and deceiving interior.

Outstanding Pho in Richmond

Had a craving for Pho and decided to try out Nooch. Got something surprisingly new today!

Food: Very fresh, clean and YES no MSG. I ordered the combo and was surprised to recieve a very tasty asian style salad with a small spring roll, a perfect app. When the Pho came I was surprised by the trendy presentation not typical of these cheap asian eats. The Pho broth was very clear, did not contain the oileness and sparkly (MSG crystals), and was very tasty. The portions of rare steak was large and the noodles were excellent.

Service was good. I think the person helping me us could have been the owner. He was quick and attentive, kind and welcoming.

Value: Outstanding - Pop, Salad, Spring Rolls, Pho x 2 = $16. Hope this keeps up.

Ambiance: It isn't your typical Pho cafe. It looked like an Ikea kitchen and frankly I taught it was a nice change.

Although out of the way I will probably make this a weekly visit when it gets colder. My new Pho choice.

Pho noodles with a twist.
By BCA333 of Richmond (22 Reviews)
Submitted Wednesday, February 25, 2009 - 10:02pm [Dine in]

Nooch is essentially a Pho noodle restaurant with a more urban flare. It basically has the layout of a Ramen restaurant but they serve Pho. I had the chicken pho, most pho places precook the chicken and then pick it off the bone and into the soup, but Nooch actually cooks a whole chicken filet fresh. The chicken isn't frozen or brought in pre cooked. It's marinated and cooked in house. The pho soup has a different flair to it also, it isn't ridden with MSG. You taste the actual flavour of the soup. It's a fresh twist on vietnamese food, which is very rare in the Vancouver area.

Cute little restaurant, very clean, very friendly, and good food. Portion size is decent, they don't have small or large sizing like you find at most places. Don't expect a huge menu with millions of different things. The menu is small but has the favourites.

If you like the normal MSG ridden pho you get everywhere, then don't bother with Nooch. If you want to try pho without the MSG then Nooch is the place.

Pho 2.0

No more DPP's (Dirty Pho Places)! This place is like Ikea for Pho. Clean and minimalistic, not like your typical Pho place. Also big TV to watch the game/fight, and free wifi.

Great ambiance, great service, quality food at a good price. They go lighter on the meat than I like, but the quality of the other ingredients and the soup base makes up for it. And they don't have hot chili oil, only Hoisin Sauce and Siracha Hot Sauce.

I don't usually put up reviews here, but I want this place to stay open, so doing my best to get them business!

its a small establishment with bar type seating , where you can face the street or face the open kitchen area and watch your food being prepared.

the owner/staff are very friendly.

this is the best tasting pho in richmond. It has no MSG and they roast their onions and ginger before making their broth.

Great Pho without MSG

This is the best pho that I have ever had and I've been enjoying pho for more than ten years. The soup is made without msg and you can actually taste the subtle ingredients used for the stock. Their regular pho's with one meat are six dollars while the deluxe ones are nine dollars. If you are a first time visitor I would suggest their combo special which consists of a beef pho, salad, and a spring roll for eight dollars. Really amazing pho I just wish it was in a less obscure location and had better seating.
