A casual Hong Kong Style cafe and restaurant with a well established name within the local Chinese community.
Took mom and pops to Mui Garden in Richmond this weekend and was happy to have had another "solid" experience. Ordered a bunch of canton favorites, (gai-lan beef, curry brisket, yang-chow fried rice, sweet and sour soup and house-special fried noodles) and found everything to be tasty but just "average" in the Richmond area.
The curry beef brisket was the headliner here since they are known for their curry and it did not disappoint. Excellent dish.
Service, value, and ambiance are all in line with typical restaurants of this nature. You don't visit for any of these three points, you are here for the curry.
Will visit again ...
I agree all review from below that their curry is really really good. Although ambiance and services are not above the standard. People go there must try their curry items. I tried other dishes such as fried rice, noodle in soup, and stir fried noodles but their curry is the most dishes that I usually order. If I go to the area around richmond centre, I usually order their curry beef brisket from their menu.
This place was recommended by a co-worker. Yes, their curries are VERY good! We had the beef brisket. We also had the poached chicken - what they're famous for. I've had better. Value wise, we thought it was kinda pricey for what we got. The portions were on the smaller side. The lady behind the counter was a little rude. We will return for the curries.
I tend to go to Mui Garden every couple weeks. As you walk in, the atmosphere is not the nicest. It's a little dated, but not disgusting. The service is surprisingly attentive which is very rare in a chinese place (especially if you're an asian dining in an asian establishment).
The food is where this place really shines. This isn't a high end dining experience but for a quick and relatively cheap meal Mui Garden hits the spot. I've been to the other locations before but the Richmond one always seems to be the best to me.
They have a daily soup that's different everytime I go. When you get it you'll notice they don't cheap out on the ingredients. Their curry is one of the best, potatoes are cooked extra long to soak in the flavour. I always order veggies when I'm there, and they always taste fresh unlike alot of other places that serve the old bitter tasting veggies. I've tried many various dishes there but they have yet to disappoint me.
So I definately recommend you give it a try if you love chinese style curry.
Ordered the curry laksa noodle for lunch and it was great value for $6.50 (for $6.95 will get you a drink with your order). I really enjoyed the home-made laksa gravy, could see and taste chunks of dried shrimp and shallots and that's a "good thing" as Martha always says. The toppings included 2 pieces each of squid, fried tofu, prawns, fishballs, and half a boiled egg.
Service was friendly and efficient.

Went here for lunch and they have a long list of lunch specials at around $6-$8. Ordered the fish on baked rice. Not bad for the price and a good choice for an everyday lunch option. But also ordered a 1/2 Hainese chicken. At $11, I would say avg. price. Tasted very good. Ordered some satays (avg and expensive) and roti (small but good). Overall just an average place. Very good service but the decor needs a major makeover. I don't think anything has changed for several years.
Food: For lunch/tea time, I usually get the Baked Crispy Fish with Portuguese Sauce on Rice and it's usually pretty good (though a little bit too oily). For dinner, the curries and the Hai Nan Chicken are all time favourites. Their Chinese food is pretty authentic and pretty good compared to other Chinese restaurants.
Service: Service here is satisfactory. Sometimes, waitresses bang silverware on tables and such, but they do refill tea and respond when you ask for their attention.
Value: A decent value for this quality of food. Lunch/tea time set menus are usually $6-10 and includes a drink while dinner set menus are approximately $12.50 per person (includes soup, rice and dessert)
Ambiance: when you first walk in, it smells musty but it's not too bad. There are plenty of seats but a little re-modeling could be done.
Food: Everyone raves about their curry so I tried their curry beef brisket with rice. It was good, had a nice coconut scent to it too, but I'm not sure I would say it's *the best* in Richmond.
Servce: Was really good. Way above average than other HK cafe style restaurants in Richmond. Servers actually acknowledge you and smile.
Value: Prices are comparable to other restaurants of this type, but portions are a bit smaller.
Ambiance: Place looks clean and brightly lit. Very spacious. Has booths and tables.
Being avid asian food fans and after having researhed on dinehere.ca reviews we decide that since we had to come to Richmond for errands we would try the Mui Garden on Minoru. The location is a bit obscure and we didn't realize that they had rooftop parking until after we had parked in the mall underground parking lot.
The ambience is typically asian with quite a few award certificates decorating the walls as well as some asian artwork. The seating is very modest and not flashy mostly made up of booths ,tables and chairs.
The menu is very extensive,,its hard to choose but there is also a chef recommended menu attached which made ordering easier for us.
Medium Won Ton soup to start ( warning,,,be hungry theres lots for 2)
Curried Beef brisket ( yellow curry) which was absolutly scrumptious
Beef in Black Bean sauce Chow Mein , another very tasty and yummy dish.
Needless to say we had leftovers and ate them for breakfast the next day!,,still just as tasty!
The Service was great,,,and the waitress was very talkative and told us about her having to work a split shift,,,,,We had a never ending supply of tea,,,although it was a bit watered down for my liking.
I would say if your in the area definatly stop in and give this Asian Gem a try,,,,try the Curry Beef Brisket,,,,I am going to try my hand at this great dish next Sunday for dinner!
A great find!
The curry this place has rocks! Set dinners start at dirt cheap prices too and we always have left overs. A great family restaurant, it's almost cheaper to eat here than try to make dinner at home. We've known the proprietress from years ago when we were first told about this place, and her daughter is taking over this store and "keeping it in the family." Plus the staff have stayed mostly the same over the years. This is one of the few restaurants my wife and I would argue has changed little in food style and quality in nearly the decade we've been eating there, and we eat here all the time, 3 to 4 times each trip from California to Vancouver. We're pratically regulars, even though we live a thousand miles away. The spicy beans, creamed corn over fried cod filets, and stirred fried big pea greens (dai dao miu), satay chicken skewers, goo lou yuk (sweet and sour), and of course the curry beef are always family favourites. Easy parking upstairs on the roof and easy to call in and order take out.
Mrs. C and I were once again in the ditch and she suggested MG. I love their "quite possibly the best" curry, and Mrs. C was craving some soup. We hurried into the restaurant and prepared to feast.
The ambiance was a little rough, and the place could use some extreme cleaning, but the server was friendly and efficient. They had a set dinner for $7.50, and for a buck more I could have bubble tea. I went for a beef brisket curry with rice, and a strawberry bubble tea. Pearls or jelly do not cost extra, which made the BBT a super value. Mrs. C had bitter melon with beef and black bean sauce on rice and the soup of the day, which was a nice Chinese pork soup. It was reported to be very satisfying. We also had roti which was pretty good. It came with more of the savory curry sauce.
My curry was excellent as usual, but I found the BBT to be a bit sweet. As for value, we both ate well for 20 bucks. Enough said.
Recommended.
Mui Garden is my favourite for its Hainan Chicken on rice which is the signature dish of this restaurant. The rest of the food is also pretty good and the portions are exceptionally huge which makes it such a good value. The ambiance needs a little work as I think its dark and damp the restaurant could need some lightening up. Its getting old. Service is ok and I would still recommend this place.
Excellent value for the money. 11 people for dinner on a Sunday. Place was packed. We ordered 11 dishes including the specialty chicken and curry beef brisket. $138.00 before tip. Free soup and dessert. Even though the place was full service was exceptional. All patrons in the restaurant were oriental which to me is a good sign. To quote MacArthur "I shall return"
I've eaten in Mui many many times and I always order the beef brisket curry (fish curry is good as well), green beans with minced pork, and anything else that my friends and I feel like at the time. I have never been disappointed with the food. Besides being Chinese, I've grown up eating Chinese food and Mui definitely one of the top with its awesome curry among other things.
Prices are not cheap nor too expensive, and service is good for a typical Chinese restaurant.
When it comes to dining in Richmond, you have a large variety of Asian restaurants and I am sure that the competition is fierce. If you don't cut it, you will soon be gone. This is one place that stands out and has staying power.
Have been here many times and again just a few days ago.
The staff are courteous and service is prompt and friendly. Food quality is good and we have never had a dish that disappointed. They serve one of the better hot and sour soups. Good regular Chinese fare. Have often ordered the same items as well as venturing out a bit with more variety and have not been disappointed. One of the best sweet and sour pork dishes around.
Decor is simple and plain but the place has a certain kind of ambiance and I guess it feels a bit like being in someone's living room. Definitely recommended.
On multi return to this establishment, still not tired of their food. Mui Garden provides good service and food at very reasonable prices. They give you enough of whatever you order. Theyre famous for their Hai Nam chicken and Curry dishes. All are great . I prefer the Hot Sour Soup and chicken wings there, probably one of the best around. The noodle dishes are all good. This is one of the establishments that you will see mostly Chinese eating there, which gives you an idea about the quality and freshness turnover. A good family dinner spot.
As far as a "won ton" house in Richmond, this place is still one of the best that offers a great variety with good quality, pricing and without the grease.
I love the curry in this place it has the aromatic flavour of coconut mixed in just right. They also have two choices of plain rice or hainan rice. Whenever I come here I always get the hainan chicken and curry on the side (variety of choices for curry also) and the hainan rice. Might change it once in a while but the curry is a must.
