I was here the other night with my neices and we had an awesome experience!! I filled up my bowl with prawns, sweet and sour pork and a whole lot of seafood and the kids found it very amusing how the chef cooks in front of us in that large grill they have. When our meal came the chef brought us our meal and it also came with free soup and rice. Although the kids made a mess on the table our server was very friendly to us. Love it here!
Now thinking back I really don't understand why my friend would pick up this restaurant to celebrate her birthday, it's simply not good started from the beginning.
SERVICE: We arrived at this place shortly before 5pm, after we were seated the waitress was nowhere to see for a good 10-15 minutes and we were the only table at restaurant at that time. Since our birthday girl hasn't had arrived yet, we asked our waitress to explain how it works after she finally returned to our table, she wasn't paying any attention to us, speaking fast in a very strong British accent while she was looking outside of the window. We barely caught half what she said. When one of my friends joked about most of the asian restaurants come with the green tea, she gave us a dirty look like we couldn't afford it and almost yelled at us in a high pitch voice:"It's never free in our restaurant!!"... After that she disappeared from our table for good until another gentleman came over to take care of us for the rest of our stay, at least he was soft spoken and polite--for a change.
FOOD: The food bar around the grill looked messy, meats looked black and not fresh while vegetables looked like leftover from the week before. This lady cook behind the grill seemed like totally out, slow in motion and never said a word to us during the whole time except asking our table number. She had no expression on her face or whatsoever at all time either, and guess what, she also kept staring outside of the window. I wonder why both ladies in this restaurant all love to look outside, there were just some parked cars.
VALUE: The price at this place was also on the high end, although four of us only spent $40, but we hadn't had any drinks and our dinner plates were smaller than appetizer size. In the end, we left our waiter a 20% tip, half because he was nice and friendly, half we would like him to tell that snobby waitress: asking about the green tea got nothing to do with the affordability, there is no need to be rude.
I haven't been to this place in over 15 years. I remember it being better. Maybe it wasn't and I just didn't know better. It's still the same. Decor is the same, but not dirty, just outdated. Waitress was acceptable but unmemorable. Stir fry guy was ok.
Went at lunch with an entertainment coupon so we got out for two of us for $20 including a tip. You get 25 percent off at lunch but not if you use the entertainment coupon.
The metal bowls were a bit bashed up but off we went. had mostly veggies anda few seafood items. The bok choy was brown and slimy. Other items were ok, but as others have said be careful what you choose. Lots of mushrooms and other realatively light veggies are best. The sauces really add weight as you have to add quite a bit like 3 or 4 ladels full to make it taste good. Serve with really gloppy hoisin sauce two rice paper thick wraps and rice (brown or white). It filled me up but did not ispire me to come again. DO NOT eat the free soups, the hot and sour was gross and the corn chowder was a gelatinous pasty mess.
Went there last Tuesday for the first time because of the Entainment Book, only found out at their door that we left it at home... but I said we should try it anyway, and I was right, we had a great dinner! Their food bar, especially seafood, looked very nice and fresh. I had mainly big shimps plus some spinach, added just the right amount of garlic and lemon sauce, it was so good and looked pretty too. It's healthy as well because I told the cook only put in drop or two oil when they put it on the grill. Despite it was quite busy at the time, our server was fast and very pleasant, took the time to explain the special beer to my friend and was nice enough to bring some for taste. I, on the other hand, took his recommendation and had their real fruit strawberry slushy drink, it was just simply delicious! One drawback though, the "naked" wet towels seemed re-washed and not sanitized, we didn't touch them at all. Why don't they use those sealed disposable ones like the chopsticks they put on the tables?
Let me say the service is very good in here. The short chinese man waiter is very helpful and so nice. And the chef so cool flip the noodle around. But after those everything is bad... BAD! Even the food I can smell the smell is so not fresh.. after I went home I had to 'you know what' 3 times and 3 days. I think they use the "teriyaki" beef to cover the taste and smell, but still after you eat it your stomach ccannot hide. it is game over. and i dont' know why they no use lights just using the candle... i can't see anything. maybe that is what they want .. so i cannot see the food is un-fresh... holy god . i will never come here again. but if you go give the waiter good tip. he is so nice.
I am not usually a complainer, but have to say something about their new Langley restaurant.
Me and my family are regulars at their Richmond location and love this place. While some of the people here saying their food are too expensive, I found it's just they don't know how to pick from the food bar. Say if you just have the nice big shell-less prawns or other seafood, the price of this place is actually very cheap! Not to mention our waiter(see him all the time, might be the owner himself) is always nice and friendly and attentive to us.
We were initially happy to learn that they have a new location in Langley since we live nearby and don't have to drive all the way to Richmond, so we made our first visit a couple of weeks ago. I don't know if there are the same people operate the joint, because it's clearly a FAILURE! We went there on Fri night, the place was simply a chaos. We waited about 15 minutes to get seated, waited another 30+ minutes in line to just hand over our food to the cooks, strange they wouldn't let us wait at the grill so we waited another about 20 minutes to get our food back at the table. All together we waited more than an hour..... And the worst, we got the wrong food back. My husband hates the ginger, and his plate was full of ginger!! We told our waitress, but she seemed didn't care at all and we had to start the food bar allover again. After more than hour and half of this mess, we just totally lost our appetite!
a) Stay in business. I can't believe anyone would come back.
b) Make sure everything is fresh enough to be edible. The answer to this is "they can't".
The rice was so mushy that it was like paste with small lumps. The wraps were stale and stiff as a board. The soup was waiting at our table when we returned from the grill and had cooled to room temperature. Something in my plate of I-can't-tell-what-the-heck-this-is definitely tasted "off". Although I feel sorry for the guy that manned the grill (what a crummy job that must be), he had about as much personality as his spatula.
My brother in law and myself have gone to Mongolie many times. At first my food was a mish mash as others claim but with practice it turned out good. One thing I do have to say is that you need to know what sauces to use with what foods and not to go overboard.
I agree with many of the reviewers in that you are forced to put this meal together yourself and for the money they charge, for the majority of people you won't be getting your money's worth. This concept requires you to go many times "to get it right." Most people, and rightfully so, won't have the patience like I did. Overall the concept of build your meal restaurant like this simply does not work. My biggest knock against this restaurant is that they charge a lot of money for a meal YOU pieced together yourself. Service is good when you come in but at the second half of your stay, forget about it. They are too busy with others coming in.
Try it at your risk and experiment or head the reviews of many below and don't go there.
I've been to many mongolian place in LA and other part of the US. This place is unbelievably expensive. I used to pay only $5.99 - 7.99 for all you can eat or sit down place. This concept has long been abandoned in the US and now they're becoming like a fast food type because people are just not willing to pay top dollar anymore, so you'll find franchise like Genghis Khan or Mongolian Wok at the mall's food court offering Monggolian grill and you pay by the lbs. Guys believe me I agree with the one of the reviewer, how many ways you try to do it, the food will taste almost like teriyaki's. For me it's not worth it, just buy your own ingredients and some teriyaki or oyster sauce and stir fry your own veggie on a wok...whopla...it's done. The reason why this place can charge a steep price is just because we don't have too many mongolian grill place. To be honest in every mongolian place you go the taste will be quite similar. So why pay $15 or more for this kind of food if you can make your money worth it elsewhere.
The trick to going to a place like this is stick to the meat and some veggies when you're putting it in your bowl. Don't, and I mean DON'T go for the noodles. They're heavy and will cost you a good $10 extra. The dishes all come with rice, so you won't really need the noodles.
Nothing really stands out about the food at this place, other than the gimmick of "do-it-yourself" assembly of the meal. I don't really mind doing this and find it to be kind of fun. However, afterwards, the food only comes out to be mediocre, and sometimes the cook mixes up the dishes of different guests.
This location being in Richmond, I don't really find it worthwhile to eat there when so many good Chinese places are surrounding it. It may be a good "tourist" thing to do if some friends come from out of town.
We made reservations for 7pm for my daughter's 14th birthday (10 guests total.) We arrived to one wait staff and the kitchen "manager" serving all restaurant guests - no other staff, aside from the grill cook were on site. I asked for the cake to be put in the freezer stating that it was an ice cream cake (home made by my daughter.)
We arrived at 6:55pm. At 7:20 we got up and started selecting our food - no server had yet greeted us or taken our beverage order. At 7:45 I went to the bar, reached over and grabbed water glasses and filled a jug of water, forks and then stopped the "manager" and asked for service. He provided a number of "to be honest with you, this is crazy" responses, "I'm not even supposed to be doing this" "we don't have enough staff." 10 minutes later we recived three pitchers of coke. Other beverages that were ordered never arrived. In fact, no server once came to our table during the entire dinner - even after the restaurant cleared out at 8pm. We made every request getting up from our seats and going to the bar.
Our food was fine - what you pick is what you get so the combination really is up to the guest. The soup that was served with the meal was bland, starch thick and cold. We eventually recived wraps and rice after a number of requests.
We dediced to leave after eating and requested our bill and the ice-cream cake. We paid our bill, no discount was applied despite absolutely zero service. We drove home (10 minute drive), only to find that the cake had not been put in the freezer - need I say more.
The whole experience was a disaster with no interest in resolution by the staff - managment included. Our cake turned into a milk shake which was served at home, with sinking candles.
Don't waste your time or money at this restaurant.
This place is a rip off.
the quality does not match the price, especially when everything is weighed by THEIR standards. if you come here, you will be ripped off big time.
it's hard to put these into actual facts or examples unless people know the cost for mass imports of ingredients into a restaurant - which is actually 50% cheaper than their menu price - remember " whole sales selling to business buyers will always be cheaper" <----so why do I say this?
This place's menu weigh ratio / price is ridiculously high for the quality of food and cooking that you get and not to mention it's a 'cafeteria style serve yourself' thing. What you do is you pile the raw ingredients onto your metal plate along an assembly line-like thing like in a buffet place of some sort than you bring it to one of their many inexperienced, drop out look-alike chefs and they do a horrible job of cooking.
This place is ripping people off at 3-4 times the norm - and that calculation excludes their profit margin estimations so you can guess how much this place is really ripping off at people.
Service, almost none.
Place looks dark and stuffy.

We went here for a friend's birthday. We had a table of about 15 on a very slow night. I went up to make my bowl and was thinking more about keeping it light so it wouldn't cost too much. It ended up being $11 for some noodles and veggies -- ridiculous. It wasn't fully heated on the grill, so some of the veggies were still cold and raw. The cooks seemed to be out of it, they didn't talk to anyone or each other, and when your meal was done they kind of scowled at you until you took your bowl. At the end of the night, the waitress mixed up all our drink orders, so it was a nightmare. Don't bother.
Damn, first time there last Wednesday, and it's so bad about almost everything.
(1) Food items are stale along the food bar, and later I found out the pork and shimp stinks really bad!
(2) The mid-aged oriental cook(Mongolian?) who flips on the grill seems so unhappy, and every word spitted out of his mouth was shouting: Guess the price!!.... like he's gonna kill you if you don't. Very rude too when I asked if there are any MSG added in the food.
(3) My meal came to an incredible $23.59 for a bunch of noodles and a bit of pork and shimp. I'm sure the same plate of food would cost only $6.95 in a Chinese/Japanese restaurant. Drinks are also very pricy, local beers are priced at $4.25 before 16% tax.
However, the only good thing pleasant was the service that night. The oriental waiter who served us was very friendly and talkative, also gave us a detailed direction to the RiverRock Casino, he even drew a map for us, excellent service! But tell the truth, I won't recommend this place at all even I gave a hi5 to the waiter, because everything else were just simply bad.
ohmy. this place was simply awful. my caucasian friends loved it, but me~being a traditional chinese food diner hated it.
i ordered a plate full of noodles and meat, and it was by weight, and the chow mein dish cost me 26.00. worse is the stir fried noodles were still soggy due to the sauce and the 'chef" had fried it 1/4 black. it was simply the worst, and the most expensive noodle dish i have ever paid for.
also, burnt noodles /soggy rolled in a pancake is not the least tasty.
awful. big waste of money for a restaurant who's target market are non-asian people who don't know any better. sorry. this is the best rating i can give.
One of the best places to eat in the city, if you don't like your meal, it's nobody's fault but yours as you picked it! You may like banana chips, garlic and tofu, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are going to taste good together, served with rice! Use some common sense with your choices; prices are not high, despite what others say, I am a big guy with a healthy appetite and $14-$15 fills me up every time. Outstanding!!!
The sign on the door says no MSG but look the owner in the eye and ask if his cooks add MSG to stuff like fried rice. I won't eat at either location because the food is overpriced crap. Mongolians are never known for gourmet food and these two restaurants aren't even Mongolian.
This was my first time at any Mongolie Grill. The ambiance was very nice, our server was very attentive...superb job! I stayed on the conservative side for the meats, and tried some of their suggested sauce combinations. It was fantastic! My friends loved their meal too. My dish came out to about $8 before taxes, my friend's was close to $11, my other friend's dish was about $14. I used my entertainment coupon (2 for 1 entree, the complimentary entree had to be under $12). I was expecting the server to use my $8 meal as the complimentary entree, but she gave the $11 meal as the complimentary one! It was very nice of her to do that. Healthy food with great ambiance and quality! Will definitely visit again!
I've been here several times, I use it for lunch about once every few months. At lunchtime it's never busy, so the service is top notch.
This is a departure from traditional fare, there is a buffet style ingredients that includes many veggies, then a good section of meats, and another of sauces. Everything is raw initially, you collect the food you want in a bowl, hand it to the cook, guess the dollar value - if you are dead on, you get your next meal free! - then the cook weighs it, prints out your dollar amount and cooks it along with 5 or 6 other dishes on a grill in front of you.
Rice / wraps / soup is provided to everyone in addition to the portion that you choose at the buffet.
Ingredients are always top notch condition.
The only problem I have witnessed is the fact that many patrons have no idea what foods and sauces go well together, so they end up with a Heinz57 style meal that isn't as good as it could be.
its a great racket to trap tourists or people who just dont know better, this place is incredibly expensive. go to davie street and find yourself a mongolian place (between thurlow and bute is a good one) and you will get a good take out plate for 5.95, or all you can eat at dinner for 7. living near there i had been eating mongo for a long time, went to mongolie grill and for drastically less then i usually eat (small bowl to start) it cost me 27.50, what a joke. i will never ever go there again and will laugh at anyone who does because your getting hosed, it may be tasty and "neat" but just find it somewhere that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg, you will thank yourself later, if you do go to the one on davie give the chef a tip, a nice guy whos family runs the place.
