Oh so disappointing on a beautiful day

Food: I ordered a cracker-meal dry bison burger and my partner had the Canuck burger. Big buns, small patties, sad toppings and relish/ketchup/mayo concoction they call diner sauce. The Canuck burger was alright but tiny and the bison burger was dry and tasteless. Yam fries were good.

Service: waited more than half an hour for our burgers and fries and by the way those burgers tasted, I don't believe they were busy making them fresh. No apologies, no explanations and that place was half empty on a Wednesday night so they can't blame it on the crowds. Very disappointing.

Value: how a you gonna charge almost $9 for a burger that doesn't come with fries?? Are you kidding me?? And the patty was barely half the bun! The Canuck burger had barely a smear of bbq sauce on it! We had to order the yam fries separately and then, they make you pay for sauce! I'm pretty sure I got robbed when I ate here.

Ambiance: old and drab but clean.

I will never return to this place and recommend others to avoid it as well. Poor service, bland food and overpriced food just left a bitter taste in my mouth that I hope no one else will ever experience. I never got the groupon for this place, but for those who did, it might be worth it with the discount for those who didn't, avoid this place like the plague. I just regret I stumbled upon this place on such a beautiful day. Au revoir!

Very ordinary

Perhaps my expectations were overheated, but on a Sunday afternoon I visited with my family. The service was the first thing I noticed or rather didn't notice. It was at best perfunctory, verging on indifference. The burgers came basically with a plate, and they distinguished themselves by their mediocracy. Even the fabled milkshake was just ok and sub-par on a value basis.

Bottomline, mediocre food, indifferent service and not much value wrapped up in an ok ambiance.

Hi; I was at Mondo Burger a couple of months ago with friends and was impressed with the food quality and good service. I was in again yesterday with my wife and was very unimpressed by this experience; service was almost non-exsistent (very slow although not many customers; didn't even ask how food was...good thing!; food was cold, etc.) We had a deal through Groupon which enticed us to try your restaurant and I know from past Papi's has high quality standards. After this experience, I would be hard-pressed to return or recommend it to others. Just thought you should know what goes on when there's no one there managing the staff! sincerely,

wine versus food

The burgers were very good and the prices reasonable but watch out for the wine prices, the house wine was $24 a half litre, we found this ridiculous, this is not fine dining but a good hamburger joint why spoil it with a wine that is priced for fine dining. ( the lowest house wine was $21 for a half litre still way to high we think )

Great Char on My Mondo Burger
By mrsparkle of Vancouver (2 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, February 28, 2011 - 10:55pm [Dine in]

I came to Mondo Burger with my burger club around noon on Sunday. There were around 16.5 of us and we had a great time.

Lots of options for burgers, and aside from the more common beef, chicken and salmon burgers there were also bison, snapper and kangaroo patties to choose from. Prices ranged from 5.95 to 8.95, and all burgers come with the standard greens, as well as the option to add caramelized onions and sriracha mayo at no extra cost. Extra add-ons, such as bacon, cheese and such are $1 each. Given the inflated prices I'm used to seeing at some Vancouver burger joints, I thought this was pretty reasonable.

I had the Mondo Burger (a basic beef burger) with the standard greens, caramelized onions, sriracha mayo and also added sauteed mushrooms, fried eggs and cheddar cheese. I have pretty high standards, and tried to keep my expectations in check, but Mondo Burger exceeded them. The patty:bun ratio was spot on - the beef patty exhibited uniform thickness and showcased a nice, carbon-laced char from the griddle. As I grabbed the burger, the squishiness of the bun revealed itself and secured the beefy cargo tightly. The juiciness of the burger revealed itself upon first bite (cardinal sin would be a dry patty) and the cornucopia of flavours melded together for awesome effect. The runniness of the egg yolk complemented the burger nicely, as did the cheese, onions and mayo. I believe the coarseness of the grind and the quality of the beef, as well as the grill cook's precise timing contributed to a great burger, which was 8.95 inclusive of the add-ons. I also added a fries sampler platter to my order. The fries were crispy but slightly bland without the curry mayo I used to dip them.

The server was unflappable and managed our large group very well. The one or two order mix ups that occurred he quickly rectified - no fuss.

If there was one area for improvement, it would be related to the open kitchen environment - a little bit of smoke built up in the restaurant from the griddle action, although at no point did this become uncomfortable/a cause for concern. I'll be back.

Disappointed in Steveston

Tried Mondo last night and was really disappointed. I have eaten at their upscale Italian Restaurant "Papi's" and that was very good so I was shocked when I tried my wild salmon burger and it was well below average. The bun seemed to be right out of the Wonder Bread package and the dressing on the salmon did nothing for the burger. We also ordered yam fries which clearly were also out of a package. The servers were non -existent and the worst part of all what that the place was so cold. Every time the door opened we froze! I can hardly believe that this place is run by the same ownership as Papi's and it is clear to me that Mondo is just an afterthought.

Good burger but not worth the wait

I waited over 30 mins for my over priced burger.
It tasted good but not great I won't be back. The service is slow as molasses isn't burgers considered fast food? Plus the burgers don't come with fries and you have to pay for your toppings. Way too expensive for what you get.

Best Burger I have had in years

Since I go to Papi's every year or so. I decided to try out their Burger Bar for a change. I was in there on a Monday and it was pretty steady for a later afternoon lunch. The girl behind the bar was very nice and helpful. There was 5 of us and we all had something different.

I had a Canuck Burger which has bacon, cheddar, onion rings and BBQ sauce. For the price it was unbelievably good. about $7 with 3 toppings. You really can`t go wrong for that price. Meat was cooked to a nice medium. Not over done at all.

Someone had the BBQ Chicken burger which has a BBQ sauce made with watermelon. So different and delicious.

Crispy snapper burger was also a huge hit at our table. A big piece of snapper with homemade tarter sauce.

We also had fries, yam fries and onion rings to share. I like how their yam fries come out crispy. Where as some places there quite soggy. We had their curry dip and a roasted garlic one as well.

The girl was letting us know about a upcoming beer tasting for 35 dollars. I think I will have to check that out next month for something alittle different.

I would go back for sure. The price for 5 burgers and 4 sides and dips was under 60. Which is a great deal.

Milkshake review
By global of New Westminster (4 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, May 25, 2010 - 8:33pm [Dine in]

I was looking for a great place in Richmond to have a good ol' fashion shake. I have fond memories of having a shake a few years ago at Soda's (West side of Vancouver) and was looking for something comparable.

Quantity: A significant amount for a couple of glasses, typical, but fair
Quality: Nothing special here. I think the ingredients were average. Chunks of ice cream plugged the straw. tasted like something I'd try and make at home
Price: At $5.00, a bit expensive
Service: Friendly young girls, but not knowledgeable about how to make a milkshake

They made a good effort, but I probably would not buy another for $5.

Hmmm. Did The kids get left alone to run the show?

My order had to go back twice (I don't eat rare burgers). Not a whole lot of appologies for it. Nothing to encourage us to want to come back was done. Yam fries were also over cooked. We were turning into regulars, but we will think of somewhere else to go next time we want a burger. Just a general gong-show feeling between the kitchen and servers.

Mondo burger opened about 2 months ago in the Steveston Heritage Market next door to Papi's. Great burgers, the organics are 8 oz and are prepared from Heringer's Meats next door. We had 2 organics,a Mondo burger which was ground chuck and a Wild salmon burger with tartar sauce. A couple of orders of fries and onion rings. We had an Adult shake with Kahlua and coffee, a chocolate shake and 2 cokes. Service was young but very friendly. music was really good not so loud that you could not talk but great background. Cost for the four of us was very reasonable. We will definitely be back. By the way the server was talking to diners I believe they have a lot of regulars already. A great addition to our little village. Worth a trip.
