Small Chinese restaurant that serves dim sum hidden in Union Square.
My co-worker had recommended me to this restaurant. He didn't know what the english name of the restaurant, he just saids "Foo lum" and its behind Canadian Tire. So I drove to that little mall behind Canadian Tire, luckily, my friend could read chinese and pointed out Lucky Fortune.
I would of never guess that this restaurant serves dim sum. Everything was printed in chinese. It looked like a little hole in the wall place. When we walked in, we were greeted warmly by staff. There was no push cart as this place was small, but there was staff bringing out tray of dim sum items and a sheet of paper to check off items.
The waitress told us that we need to choose quickly as the special would be over soon. Apparently, if you came between 9:00 to 11:30, then dim sum whether small, med or large are all $2.25. Of course, you have to know how to read chinese to know the deal.
That was an incredible deal, I mean, where can you get 4 scallop dumplings for $2.25!!! Other places, you would get 3 scallop dumplings for over $3.00! On top of that, it was really good. So was the watercress and shrimp dumplings and steamed fish in garlic sauce.
Service was great, waitress was attentive and our teapot was filled up without asking and our empty dishes removed promptly.
The restaurant is small, but is bright and clean looking. The carpet looked like it needed to be replaced though.
When your wallet is tight and craving for good dim sum at low price, this is the place to come. A true hidden gem in Richmond.
We went here for dim sum on a recommendation. It's pretty good considering the price point. We ordered the squid tentacles, tendon/tripe, beef ball, shrimp cheung fun, ha gao, glutinous rice wraps, black sesame cubes, and steamed yolk buns.
The highlight may be the tentacles. Nice lightly seasoned batter, not chewy or too greasy. Most of the dishes were on par quality wise with other dim sum restaurants that charge at the $2.50/dish mark.
We were expecting the steamed yolk buns to be the runny yolk kind; but they weren't. :( We noted that for next time. The sesame gelatin had that thick "skin" on it like it was left out for a while, but that could have been due to us waiting until the end to eat it. It did sit on our table for awhile.
The only real disappointment was the cheung fun.
It was thick and a bit on the gluey side, also it was lacking shrimp (there was literally 2 shrimps per roll).
The ambiance wasn't much, but I didn't expect much. If we sat in the main dining room it may have been better. We didn't want to wait so we agreed to be seated in the upstairs-overflow-mahjong-room.
I think it's unfair to compare dim sum like this to say Sea Harbour, Kirin, or the Jade because the price point and ambiance are completely different. We will be back to give to the other selections a go.
Went to try this dim sum place based on the other review. This place used to be called the Nobleman Restaurant. Got there at 9:30 am. There was a sign in Chinese stating $2.25 for something but unfortunately we do not read Chinese. We asked for an English menu which stated that Dim Sum was $2.50 a dish. We ordered 8 dishes which consisted of scallop dumplings, shrimp dumplings, shrimp roll, beef rice roll, deep fried squid, fried shrimp dumplings, pan fried turnip cake and beef balls. All the dishes were not as good as Fisherman's Terrace but were solid. We will definetely be back especially with prices around half of what Fisherman's Terrace would have charged. I wouldn't call this restaurant a hole in a wall. It was pretty clean and service was efficient. We also liked the order type system since it means everything we ordered is cooked fresh and it is served piping hot. This place is definetely recomended for its solid food and great value.
