Sneaky People!!!

We decided to try this restaurant out with our entertainment coupon. i agree with the other reviewers, there is really only one man who does everything. we ordered the butter chicken (12.95) but for $4 more you get a bowl of rice, naan and papadum and we also got the lamb tikka with the sides as well (14.95). the portions were small, and we only got one bowl of rice for the two people...found that odd. the butter chicken was flavourful as was the lamb tikka but the tikka dish the onions were just plain and burning on the hot plate. everyone else who ate there was there with the entertainment coupon ONLY. by the time we got our bill we paid and left. but only later did we realize that the bill does not add up to what we ordered. we went back and found out that they already added 20% tip to the bill without telling us and we tipped again on top of that!! also they let us keep our coupon, telling us to come back with it...heck.no.we.will.never.go.back.

So we decided to give this place a try, despite having read many poor reviews. After all we do live in Steveston, and this is so close and convenient for us. Well needless to say, we will continue to drive to the other side of the city to Tandoori Kona (our favorite Indian restaurant).
We ordered Naan, Butter Chicken, and Palak Paneer; these are our usual fave dishes that we order whenever we go to an Indian restaurant. The flavour of the dishes were acceptable, although not as good as our usual place (Tandoori Kona). What was the most dissapointing however, was the amount of chicken and cheese in the respective dishes. There was a grand total of 4 cubes of chicken (each ~ 2.5cm cubed) in the Butter Chicken. My wife couldn't beleive her eyes. The Palak Paneer had a grand total of 6 cubes of cheese. We felt like we payed $25 for 2 containers of sauce!!
After reading the previous reviews on small portions and rude service, we thought that it was due to the "Entertainment Coupon" effect; yes I know it shouldn't matter but my experience is that it does effect the service/food portions. We, however, did not use any coupons and we still got ripped off!
Will never go to this restaurant again. It's somewhat amazing that it has stayed in business so long.

POOR value and just plain awful!

We had an entertainment book coupon but decided to go with the buffet instead. Rice was cold, butter chicken was runny and there was barely any chicken, chickpeas were all right, lamb was gross and cold! Tandoori chicken was all right as well. Service! Oh my! we were one of three other occupied tables. Server (owner) was rude and didn't even say hello. He came up to the table and said "yes?" No smile, no how are you...geeze! Served us our beers and didn't get naan until after our first plates were done. The naan was hard and bland. There were six hot items on the buffet, one soup, a buch of sauces and some rice pudding that looked and tasted more like coconuty, sweet rice soup! yuck! We feel super ripped off! $18 per person for a disgusting indian buffet!

Mediocre Indian Food

Only two tables full on a Thursday night in Steveston and apart from the last reviewer I must agree with the others.....a very uninspiring restaurant. Small portions, butter chicken without hardly any chicken, 2 tvs with Bollywood playing during your meal, runny raita and a lazy waiter who spent more time sitting at the bar than looking after the few customers. Some of the food was OK but there are way better Indian restaurants a half hour away in North Delta or Surrey.

Never going back

Submitted Friday, August 7, 2009 - 5:40pm [Dine in]

I've gone to La Tandoor 8 or 9 times but will never go again. I gave up. The manager/server (one person) has a consistently poor attitude and the service is usually slow. Unlike many of the reviews on here, I actually liked the food (though I agree it is expensive) but I decided to stop giving them any more money.

I read other reviews on here and found myself remembering the same problems. For example, waiting forever for him to come bring us our bill. Giving us attitude about using an Entertainment Book coupon (which I only used once out of those several visits). Feeling like it was a daycare, because their kids ran around the restaurant the entire time we were eating (cute at first, greatly annoying by the end).

Every time I went, the restaurant was not busy. I went for lunches, dinners, and tried their buffet. I don't know how they stay in business, or why.

I love indian food and we had walked by La Tandoor a few times since moving to Richmond. We knew not to expect fine dining, it is what it is....a simple family run restaurant and sometimes these can be the best places.

We decided to go last night and make use of the coupon in the entertainment book, why not - thats why we have it right?. Our server (the owner?) noticed the coupon immediatley and indicated quite rudely and gruffly that it was good for 2 for one and that we 'MUST tip a minimum 15-20% of the TOTAL bill'. Ok and ofcourse, but to be rude and say it that way? Chalked it up to guy is having a bad night and not in the best mood...maybe becuase we were the only ones in the restaurant

Service was terrible and owner was very unfriendly but food came and i have to say mine was very good - had the Tandoori chicken and was my portion was good and thought it tasted fantatsic - not thrilled that at $13.95 i had to pay an extra $3 on top of that for rice and naan though. Boyfriends meal, Prawn curry - was very flavorfull but there was very little seafood and it was quite runny - however again - was very tasty we hared both and overall we enjoyed the meal...service was terrible, but both agreed we would probably come back.

Cheque came (slowly and again server was very gruff and rude even when i complimented the food)...bill was correct and coupon amount was removed from the bill - everything great....with the exception that he ADDED HIS TIP AS PART OF THE TOTAL BILL - and this is what i have an issue with.

We actually would have left about 25% however as the tip (15%) was already added, that was all we paid and left and he was obviously not pleased

If you dont want people to use coupons - dont put a coupon in the entertainment book - if you do - dont berate your customers or be rude to them if they present a coupon....and dont add your own tip its ridiculously rude and unprofessional

reason nobody goes there? Simply customers arent made to feel welcome.....I'll get my indian fix elsewhere

butter what?

I also was encouraged to patronize this establishment during the summer of 2007 with another couple (party of 4).

Our party opted for the buffet but noted that the butter chicken was devoid of poultry.

The server recommended the buffet assuring us that the steam table would be replenished on a regular and frequent basis.

True to form no chicken was forthcoming until was were about to depart, and then onlyu sufficient chicken to satisfy the needs of one patron.

This type of conduct certainly makes one wonder how some establishments manage to remain in business.

Try their fish curry and the Indian cream cheese dessert. The lamb tikka was not tough yet not tender enough. Our friends and I seldom have Indian food, thus, we ordered everything mild. Though their naan was a bit greasy and they forgot basic things such as bringing us water / lentil crackers / naan with our meals, the food was decent. Order their dinner platters, which let you sample a variety of things, and are a much better deal than regular entrees.

La Tandoor is poor

We got take out from here and will never go back until Gordon Rasmey shows up or they sell it to new owners.

My partner and I had a Vindaloo each. I had the lamb and she had the chicken. Aside from hardly any meat the lamb was really tough ... more like a dog chew. I left a lot of mine. We both complained that the taste wasn't great too. The naan bread was wet.

I am from the UK where we are spoiled for choice with Indian food and so in Canada I try not to be too hard, but this place was poor... really poor. You would be better off getting food from Curry Express in the mall.

What is really disappointing is this could be a gold mine. There was two other couples in the place when I picked up our food, yet the restaurant a few doors down was heaving.

If the owners read this, please address the issues on this web site. numerous people we disappointed.

e-book coupon
By pocketkeypad of vancouver (2 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, July 6, 2008 - 12:58am [Dine in]

FYI: most restaurants do not ask to be included in the Entertainment Book.

The e-book coupon just creates a bad situation all around. What the server did (15% tip) was in poor judgment, but what would have the previous reviewer preferred, that they told him they do not accept e-book coupons? The 15% tip would have been less money than the entree the review would have to pay for, had the restaurant disallowed the use of the coupon.

Perhaps the restaurant does charge for the naan regardless of coupon, a charge well within their rights, provided they inform customers of the charge.

After reading some good things in local Richmond papers about this restaurant, hubbie and I eagerly ordered takeout on a Friday night: butter chicken, lamb roganjosh, naan, pappadams (sp?), and rice pilau. We were slightly disappointed that there were no "meals" and had to order everything a la carte. I muttered to hubbie that it would be a rather expensive dinner, but I reconsidered when I thought more about it concluded that it would be insignificant once our cravings were satisfied! I almost clapped my hands in gleeful anticipation.

Ah, well, the best laid plans...we started with the pappadams, which turned out to be chewy, like if they were prepared in bulk in the morning (or night before!) and left to sit and chew-ify.

Next was the naan. The naan was delicious--and small. Hmm, maybe we were just really hungry....

I began spooning the lamb and chicken curries onto our dinner plates. I kept spooning nothing but sauce onto our plates! The butter chicken contained exactly 4.25 cubes of chicken and the lamb roganjosh 3 pieces of meat!

The curries actually tasted quite yummy, but why the miniscule portions? Take-out customers deserve the same respect as dine-in ones! This experience leaves us with a bad taste...

Good food, small portions.

They are the only Indian Restaurant in Steveston Village, and have been there for several years now.

Table Staff is usually made up of one person who Serves/Answers Phone/Packs Take-out Packages/does Paperwork behind a small counter.

When we ate there (a few times) we felt ignored and felt we were imposing on the Server, asking for things.
We like Indian food very much, but stopped going there.

I had some friends who wanted to try some Indian and we came across this place in the Entertainment Book so we tried it. We ordered a bunch of dishes including the Tandoori chicken, the Lamb, Tikki and the Butter Chicken.

When the food came, we all tried each of the dishes, which were supposed to be spiced mildly. Unfortunately, even for my friend who loved spicy food and ate them frequently, it was too hot. On their account, we were given a small tub of yogurt to help with our flaming tongues. By then, the experience was tarnished and the mood soured. Even though you could argue that spiciness is relative, no where would that pass as mild.

In general we found the food alright/nothing special, and the portions too small for what they were charging for. $13.95 for a meat dish without rice or naan is a rip off.

The service is mediocre, even subpar. It appears to be a family run business that is struggling to stay afloat (we were the only ones there). As such, sufficient staffing is not a priority.

I don't mean to be harsh, but I probably wouldn't go back there, especially if I wanted good value and/or good service. Steveston has other offerings worthy of a visit.

hi everybody,
well i have ordered my meal at LA TANDOOR on 12 th jan and it was finger licking food .
firstly i would like to point out at complaints regarding naans/bread in the previous reviews.
people who are saying that its wet or so ...should dont wait for any one to guide them and visit a doctor as soon as possible ..
naan were completely fine with garlic flavour in it.
well i odered my fav. Butter chicken naan and pulao rice and a glass of mango shake { they call it by some other name}.
well it was a dilivery order and the guy who dilivered the food hardly took 20 mins to drive to my place at cook road < in front of richmond centre>
i have already decided that i will order the food from this indian restaurant bcoz it reminds me the taste of food which i had when i was in india for a couple of years back in 90's.
for the people who havnt tried dining at this place should visit it .
dont go on the reviews n all ..go there n enjoy the taste of india

Me and my husband went on friday night, even though it was snowing , we still went over there to have hot currries. I think this the best pleace to have indian food. so good and tastey. Even though we were full , we still want to have more food. the naans were really good (fresh made) write way from tandoor ovan. the manager showed us how the chef makes naan in the ovan. the ovan was so hot and i dont know how the chefs dare to put their hand inside the ovan and make naan. I really mean it if u want to have East Indian food just go to La tandoor . this is the best place.

Decided to try this restaurant after passing by many times and saw that it was in the entertainment book. I wish I didn't even step through the door. The setting was fine. When our meal came, the server brought out some naan and rice. We aren't big carb eaters and didn't order it, so we thought it was included. The food was not great and neither were the portions. Was still a bit hungry after. We used the coupon and got our bill and saw that there was a charge each for the naan and each for the rice PLUS the server added on a 15% tip for himself! I was floored! Using that coupon does not mean a server can just tack on their own tip. If a restaurant doesn't want people to use coupons, then don't put yourself in the entertainment book. Watch out if you go here, it's a big rip off.

We went there awhile ago but I feel I need to warn others---do NOT go here! We had an entertainment coupon so thought we would try it out but we were totally disappointed. The food was expensive (even with a coupon), portions small and service mediocre to say the least. We went on a Friday night and were the only ones in the restaurant for some time and then some others straggled in.
I have NO CLUE how this restaurant wins best Indian in the Richmond newspapers. Is it because it is the ONLY "INDIAN" restaurant in Richmond? Yikes, someone open another Indian resturant and give this place a run for its money!
Well, if you have a craving for Indian and can't head into Vancouver for some good eats then head to Pisces Fish & Chips at Terra Nova- there they have some decent Indian curries without going over a bridge.

Not going back
By jbr3 of Richmond (1 Review)
Submitted Tuesday, April 14, 2009 - 11:48pm [Dine in]

Unfortunately the selection of Indian restaurants in Richmond is a little scarce. I've visited La Tandoor a handful of times over the past few years. It's never been overly great but does fill the Indian craving without having to travel over a bridge, and I've never had an awful experience that has made me not want to return. The food has always just been ok, and service ok to sub-par.

Went there a few nights ago with a friend. Thought we'd make use of the Entertainment book coupon. We were the only ones in the place other than the waiter and what looked like maybe his mother, children and the cook (who was maybe the waiters wife)? Another couple did come in, ordered the buffet, and left shortly after. The food again was ok, but as the majority of the other reviews mention, there is definitely a lack of meat in the dishes. We ordered the Fish Curry and the Vegetable Curry. Lots of sauce (kind of watered-down tasting) and the Fish Curry really didn't have much fish in it at all. I don't think the waiter was happy that we both ordered water. I did end up ordering a Mango Lassi during the meal (which was quite tasty), but as we were towards the end of our meal, the waiter came to the table, picked our coupon up off the table, and with authority flipped it over and back down onto the table with his index finger, stating that we must tip 15 to 20% on the amount of the bill before the discount. When we had finished, he was to busy four tables away at the back of the restaurant with his kids crawling all over him (and the table), to notice we wanted the bill so we could pay and leave. We kept piling up our dishes at the end of our table hoping he would get the idea, but no. Finally I caught his attention and asked for the bill. He made three trips clearing our dishes off the table, then finally brought the bill which had a 15% tip automatically added onto it. Seriously, I have no problem tipping even 25% if the service is outstanding (and yes, on the amount of the bill before the discount), but when I'm told how much I should tip and told verbally by my waiter that it is mandatory, that's just absolute bull.

If you want to visit a daycare staffed with unfriendly employees and watered down curries with no meat, go to La Tandoor. It'll knock your socks off. Oh yeah, they didn't even say goodbye when we left. Won't be back.

One last thing, check out the review by "Rupal". What's the deal? Is this a review written by an employee? Maybe not, but I did find it a little out of place.

My best friend and I use to go from time to time to take out Indian when we felt like butter chicken but did not feel like sitting in a restaurant, it was always descent, nothing special; however, I went there a few weeks ago for the first time in over a year and it was awful. Like others have written there was like 3 cubes of chicken mostly sauce and I had to pay extra for rice. The food was overpriced for what I got, and was not enjoyable at all. I think from now on I will head into Vancouver when I want Indian food.

Submitted Saturday, January 10, 2009 - 7:55pm [Dine in]

We used to order from here occasionally when we were desperate for Indian and couldn't be bothered to drive anywhere to pick it up. This place is in walking distance so it was somewhat convenient. Like some of the other reviewers have already mentioned the curries literally come with anywhere from 2-6 pieces of small chicken cubes and it really isn't worth $10.95 for just the sauce.

After a while I just started cubing up chicken myself and dumping a can of Patak's from the grocery store on it and it was equally good, which tells you the quality of curry you're getting from La Tandoor. But I've still been going just to pick up Naan from there when we have our "can" curry at home.

Tonight, since it's been a while since I've had anything other than Naan from there, I had a lapse in judgment and foolishly ordered some vegetable pakoras as well.
Firstly though, when I called to place the order the guy on the end of the phone snapped "that's it" at me after I placed my small order then snapped "20 min" and slammed the phone down on me thereby robbing me of my opportunity to tell him yes, that's it, because I get better curry out of a can.

When we picked the order up and opened the box of pakoras, they were literally BLACK. They obviously had been deep fried way too long and were totally disgusting. Still I'm a sucker (and a bit of a pig) so I tried one anyways. Lo and Behold, I had to spit it out. Literally unedible.

So that's it... I'm done. Forever. I'm still shaking my head and rubbing my sore belly and trying to figure out how this place stays in business...
