Kiyo Sushi is one of the most stylish and popular Japanese restaurants in Richmond. Only the freshest fish will do to make their imaginative dishes. All the classics are available as well.
My husband and I arrived at 9:20pm. We were aware they closed at 10pm. There were still a few tables left in the restaurant that were finishing up. We were quickly brought to a table with menus. After only 1 minute, a waitress asked us if we were ready to order. Lucklly we already knew what we wanted, so we ordered. I ordered 1 Spicy Tuna Sashimi, 1 Negitoro Roll & a KatsuDon. My husband only ordered a Live Lobster Sashimi. Food arrived 10 minutes later. Spicy Tuna Roll ($5.00) was pretty average, only 5 small, TINY pieces. The Negitoro Roll was nothing too exciting--very little tuna for $3.50. The Katsu-Don ($8.00) was disappointing. I've eaten this a lot of times at other restaurants. The sauce was tasteless..not sweet at all as it's supposed to be. The pork was poor quality as it had a lot of fat on the sides and the port itself was quite chewy. The live lobster sashimi was the absolute disappointment! It was supposed to be 'live'...however it didn't seem that way to us. The meat did not have its unique sweetness as it should have. We did not witness the chef preparing the lobster, and it was never brought to us before preparing it. So we question whether the lobster was even live. My husband has had lots of live lobster at other restaurants before and this one was a little 'off'. The balance of the lobster was made into a Udon soup. The soup was absolutely tasteless...seemed like they forgot the salt or any kind of spice. We did not ask how much the lobster was before we ordered which was a big mistake. When we got the bill, it was $70.00! And they charged an additional $4.50 for the Udon! We have never paid this much for live lobster before! The entire bill came to $95.55 for 2 people, consisting of 4 items! The decor was cold and had a sterile feel to it. Given that most of the prices on the menu are considered high, you would expect a warmer decor. Service was poor--we had to ask the waitress to fill our teas twice and seemed like everyone was rushing to clean up & get the restaurant ready for closing. We have previously been to this restaurant in the past years and we were aware that although the prices were more expensive than other sushi restaurants, we liked the good quality of fresh seafood they offered & that is why we returned. However, this was our first time back in 2 years and it was really disappointing & will be our last! We could have spoken to the manager, however, given that everyone was ready to close, we didnt' bother. We will not be returning again.
