My favourite dim sum restaurant

I've come here a couple of dozen times for dim sum only and it is always good.

Located upstairs it has multi level shared parking which is very convenient. It's a large space with plenty of room between tables. There's a few LCD TVs around for the usual dim sum people who spend their mornings there it's clean through and through (even the washrooms!) It's usually busy during the dim sum hours and only once did I have to wait for a table. There are plenty of servers around and they are uncharacteristically attentive.

You order off a large menu list. There are all the usual menu items with a few interesting ones nestled in. It's always hot and has been consistently good or better every time. I do agree with the previous reviewer that the special little garnishes they did to some of their dishes are now gone which were noticeable but nothing more than that. Prices have gone up but what hasn't? The items themselves remain mostly the same in size and quality.

What I like mostly about their dim sum is that all the right dishes are made in bite size variety (the Deep Fried Pork Dumplings, Curry-Taro Dumplings, Spring Rolls, etc). Nothing worse than having a mouthful of deep fried dough and a morsel of minced pork. The dishes are generally a smidge smaller than other dim sum places however.

This is probably my regular dim sum place and will likely continue to do so all else being equal.

Great Place for Dim Sum

Food: Everything we ordered was quite tasty from the sticky rice to the ha gow to the egg tarts. Will def. try the lychee pudding the next time I go. This place is a more pricier than other dim sum places but as a reflection of food, service and ambiance, it just may warrant a visit/return.

Service: Always people around to flag down and get help from. Water and tea always refilled.

Ambiance: It was much cleaner and nicer than I expected.

I would come back but only on occasion as one can get dim sum from so many places at a cheaper price. It may become one of those restaurants you go to when you're with people who don't like the dingier but cheaper places.

I was here for my cousin's wedding banquet on the weekend and everyone was raving about the service! I never knew about this restaurant before, and although it doesn't look like much from the outside, the inside is pleasantly clean and nice. The restaurant is pretty small, but bigger is not always better. I think because the restaurant is smaller, they are able to concentrate more on service. They didn't just bring the food to the table, we had a server assist us with each and every dish. They were very eager to please - anytime they were out of something, you could rest assured that they would bring more right away.
The food was good, but I think the portions here are a little smaller than standard. I don't recall having any leftovers to bring home like we usually do.

I would definitely recommend this restaurant! I would like to give their dimsum a try sometime.

Very affordable food that beats home cooking. May not be the best tasting chinese restaurant out there, but offers steady quality of food, at extremely cheap prices at around $10 per person, on weekdays it's very convenient because of parking but sunday morning dim sum is extremely busy. The overall mood isn't great, not the most comfortable environment and decor just doesn't try, and although not exactly dirty, you always get the feel that its not quite up there with the big name restaurants.

Used to have good food

This used to be my number one dimsum place in Richmond when it first opened up. The 4 - 7 times a year my wife and I used to come up to Vancouver to visit, we'd have tea at this place at least twice a week. Convenient parking up in the structure on weekdays, widely spaced tables, prompt service, clean linens, and upstairs window views of Richmond's city centre make for a great yumcha place. The price used to be very good as well. But over time, prices per dish went up, and then the quality went down. They used to add small touches like the fish roe on top of the special shumai, or the extra large and generous portion of phoenix claws (chicken feet) with generous strips of fresh green chile on a bed of tarot mixed with tofu skin. But no more roe on top and no more tarot on the bottom of these dishes. I think we got spoiled initially and now expect more. We still like to take friends and family there and for someone who's doesn't dine out and do the yumcha thing on a regular basis, this place will still be really nice. But we know how good it really used to be.

Horrible Food

I went to Kingford Seafood Restaurant last week and the service was horrible! I had a reservation for 6:30 but I had to waite till 7:15 to be seated. When we got seated we ordered our food, after about an hour, our food arrived. We ordered a king crab which was medium sized, but tasted horrible and their wasn't enought garlic. I ordered a few other dishes which was okay, but did not live up to my expectations. Overall, I think you should go to this restaurant if you are looking for cheap food.

Richmond Rarity: Good Service and Good Food
By garagebroker of Richmond (4 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 7:10pm [Dine in]

Today we went to Kingford Seafood for dim sum based on reviews we read on DineHere. I am glad we read the reviews and they were accurate.

We are always looking for a better place for dim sum where the waiters don't scowl at you and throw the food at your table. I think we have finally found a place where we are comfortable taking company to for dim sum.

The food was fresh and hot and we didn't miss the noisy food trolleys at all. Variety was good and even the usual offerings were changed up for a bit of interest such as spare ribs with squash. The turnip cakes were soft and tasty; the eggplant fantastic; the beef balls were big and one serving was enough for five of us. The fresh crab and tofu wrapper was excellent. The teapot was kept hot and waiters obliging when we asked for fresh tea. We finished off the meal with eggtarts that were still warm.

Because the quality was so good, we probably ate more than we normally would have for dim sum. It cost us $8 per person but probably we could have gotten away with $6 per person. I have no qualms with spending $8 per person especially when the service AND the food is good.

I am looking forward to trying them out for dinner.

The service was fine and the pork and preserved egg congee was okay but everything else was disappointing. The tobiko on the sui was orange gluten possibly or some type of sponge. We tried some different dim sum items but couldn't find the listed ingredients in them.

Cookie Cutter Dim Sum

First of all, the positive---great attentive service! Now for the food. There were four of us who shared 15 dishes and found the dim sum to be completely average. There were a couple of highlights, including the steamed chicken dried scallops buns, pan fried chives and meats dumplings, steamed bean curd sheet roll with fresh crab meat, and steamed dried scallops and shrimp dumplings. Our question is this; does anyone make their own dumpling wrappers anymore? Kingford, like so many places uses the thick, gummy pre-packaged dumpling wrappers. We also found all of the fresh seafood oriented dishes to be lacking in flavor--no real seafoodyness; especially anything with shrimp, crab, or scallops. Another problem we had was with the occasional garnish of carrots of peas--obviously pulled out of the mass produced frozen vegetable package. In short, we found the food to be so much like many other dim sum houses; ordinary and unremarkable.

very good dim sum

We stumbled onto Kingford last year. We were staying at a hotel across the street. Wanting breakfast, we spotted the OPEN neon sign on a building and saw DIM SUM underneath it. It called to us and we weren't disapponted then or more recently as this past weekend. The place is clean, brightly lit and always bustling with people. Lively but definitely not too loud. We've been lucky that both trips didn't require us to wait long for our table.

Since we didn't remember what we had last year, we made a specific effort to choose items that sounded like something we haven't had before relying solely on the english description on the menu. We had 8 dishes in total. We learned that a rice roll is made of chow fun or wide noodle which we have had before. Regardless, familiar or new, all the dishes were very good.

The 2 things that were new for us was the lychee pudding and egg yolk layer cake. We were expecting the lychee pudding to be the usual opaque flavored gelatin. Instead is was a jewel of a clear gelatin with suspended strips of lychee and an orange top. Not sure how they made it but it was pretty and delicious. Not too sweet. The egg yolk layer cake was soft, warm and good and definitely not something we've had before.

When we were seated, we were handed a menu with the english translations and another yellow sheet with no english translation. The yellow sheet we're guessing are the special of the day. Next time we will definitely ask for a translation of the yellow sheet.

The service was very efficient. They were in constant motion, delivering food, removing plates, setting tables.

I have a few pictures in flickr from this past trip. http://www.flickr.com/photos/timestill/ you're welcome to have a look. If you click on Vancouver/Richmond B.C on the right, the photos will be in a better order for viewing.
