King Buffet offers an affordable Chinese buffet for lunch and dinner.
Yes, fit for a King... my dog King. To be kind the food was terrible, probably the worst chinese food I have ever had. Cold, flavourless and greasy. Dim sum lacked Sum.. flavour that is. if you want cheap cold chinese then this is the place. Thank goodness the plates were cleaner than the washrooms.
I have been to King Buffet twice for lunch and once for dinner. I live 2 hours away. Please remember, it is Chinese food buffet and not a regular restaurant settings. Service is minimal as usual. If you want full service, do not go there. For me, for $11.95, with lots of good tasting food, is very reasonably priced. Dim sum siting on a steam table are usual practice and these are wholesales stuffs, so I do not eat them. Most local Chinese restaurants do not make their own dim sum anyway The foods are as good as any other Chinese food buffet and I like the big open spaces. Dinner at $16 also has crabs and I like them. Parking is plentiful and this is very rare in Richmond. My usual way of eating a buffet is ... eat lots of salad first, then seafood / meat dishes and then a cup of ice-cream. At 11.95, I cannot expect them to serve me a black forest cake, but their ice cream choices are good. I do not eat the Japanese food there also, as there are real, cheap all you can eat Japanese restaurants in Vancouver. But for Chinese food, King Buffet has not disappointed me and I am going back again today for dinner. For those diners who have a hard time to know what the dishes are by looking at them, I advice them to ask any Chinese customers standing next to you. Until now, I have not found King Buffet has served any strange looking food yet... The washroom is clean so far I am concern. It is not a place to sleep in it... Lastly, it is a Chinese Food Buffet restaurant and if you expect something other than Chinese food, do not go there.
Total waste of time food was nasty and gross bathrooms were absolutely filthy and disgusting. As soon as we laughed we all had to go to the bathroom and then the hospital with food poisoning. Do not go here!! The buffet you smell like a dirty mop. The server was wearing an iPod. She was listening to music As she served us. The best part of the restaurant was leaving. When we arrived absolutely no food was on the buffet table. When they serve the sushi it was at least two days old rice was hard and stale. By the time we were about to leave they started bringing the food out it was 1230 at the time.
I've been to many Chinese buffets and this one rates near the top. Huge variety of dishes. The largest chicken wings I have ever been served in a restaurant. Crispy, juicy, and tender. So good I ate 6 of them and only had enough stomach to sample a few more things. I was so stuffed I would guess I left half of the offerings untouched. $16 plus tax plus tip and you can count on $20.00 a head. There is also a hot pot add on but at what cost is a mystery as I neglected to inquire. Service is really terrific. Empty dishes were picked up immediately and tea was constantly topped off. Wait staff fluent in English. Bathroom is passable. I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone. Hopefully the service and the quality and variety of foods stays the same and not go the way of the Grand Buffet.
Went to the King Buffet yesterday for lunch ($10.99). It was the first time here and definitely the last. Walked in and got a table pretty much right away, the place is large so lots of tables. The food is ok...not a huge selection not the best quality but I really don't expect that much for $10.99. After about being there for approx. 30 minutes, I asked somebody which turned out to be the manager/owner if I could get some water...well he just launches into me, you been here to long, you should leave, blah blah blah, I really was taken aback as I did not know what he was talking about as was up getting a second serving at the time and really only had some sushi (which was good) and a few nibbles the first serving. When I asked a waitress about him, who he was and how RUDE he is, she goes..."I know he is a rude man but he gets nervous when place is busy"...(it was not busy with loads of tables left). I asked the waitress about 10 minutes later if they log the time when someone comes in and if she could check how long we had been...she came back and said its just 40 minutes and they usually allow 1 1/2 hours before they get rude. I recognized this manager/owner from the oriental buffet in surrey and stopped going there because he was just so rude to customers
On another note make sure you have gone to the washroom before you go there...they are disgusting.
Went here for lunch today. The place had a couple of tables.
First thing that went through my mind was that they really should not have opened a buffet right in the heart of Richmond.
The food is geared more towards Westerners. I won't complain since I grew up here and having travelled back and forth to Asia and also eaten at some of the top-notch Chinese restaurants in Vancouver, I know what good Chinese food is.
For $10.99 (Lunch), the value is not bad. However quality is not exactly great, on the same level with Uncle Willie. It's is passable place, hit or miss on some dishes. If you simply want to stuff your face and get some 'fast food chinese style' King Buffet is a good choice to go.
I can't help but keep getting this feeling that if only they down-sized a bit of their restaurant, they could transfer some of that money into the food. The place is just too big.
For such a big place, the item choices were not too big - entrée remained around 12 - 15 core dishes.
One confusing aspect about them is they're trying to gear towards a Chinese Canadian crowd but sometimes they're just not getting it right. Not enough Chinese Canadians (Talking about those that have lived in Canada for decades) here in Richmond that will make you a profit. Either you go full blown Western style, or Fresh Off The Boat style (New Immigrants).
From what I mentioned before regarding quality of food, it's hit and miss for each dish. Some of the dishes seem like they've been sitting around for hours and haven't been touched, while others seem fresh. some vegetables like mushrooms had sand inside. I'm no picky eater but at least clean your food before you cook it.
Dessert was not good. Fruits were not sweet. Quality of vegetable seem to be lower end. The meat seemed to be a bit old and chewy. However, I'm not a picky eater and like I said for $10.99, I won't give them a hard time but facts are facts.
One upside, their food is not salty or over oily.
I would return not because of the quality of the food, but because of the nostalgia and taste of the food - old school North American Chinese Cuisine with a slight modern twist. Quality-wise, I would say Uncle Willie's is better even if they serve sausages.
We don't usually frequent buffet's that often but pleased we tried out this restaurant. One of the members of staff let us see the buffet area before we decided to eat there.
There was an excellent range of food and what we tried was very good. I particularly enjoyed their beef stew, it was amazing, meat was so tender. I also enjoyed their BBQ Pork Buns. In fact everything was good. There was a decent selection of desserts, we particularly liked the swiss roll and Chinese Steamed Sponge.
Most of the food was presented in buffet style counters however the Dim Sum came in bamboo containers. I saw a small selection of food for those who weren't keen on Chinese food.
The Dim Sum was very popular, unfortunately people were running and pushing to get the fresh stuff when it came out and taking all they could carry (a bit greedy).
Three areas of improvement:
1) The buffet area was small and was a backlog of people at the Dim Sum area.
2) The Dim Sum area should be in a different place, this was also the staff access point to the back area of the restaurant
3) The bathrooms were very slippery and I almost fell over
Service was good, we were served tea as soon as we got to our table. I got my soda within a couple of minutes. The gave us tea refills constantly. They cleared our plates often. We got our bill within a minute of asking for it.
The restaurant looked clean, the tables and chairs were really comfortable and the decorations were nice.
$10 per person for an all you can eat buffet with food of that quality was fantastic. It is $6 to take out your lunch and $16 for dinner.
I would go back to this place but go with a more emptier stomach!
first of ..the server told me that i should not have so much sashimi ..so nice false adverting about being an all you can eat place./.gthen the server tacks on a gratuity after being rude to me.so i complained to the manager andhe told my wife in mandarin that i had no manners and should leave some for the other customers and reluctantly removed the tip.we went again this week to try again and give it another chance but.... i had run to the washroom 3 times with an upset stomach.i think they mixed the lunch time left overs with hot food. either that or the shrimp looked not very fresh..avoid this place it is terrible.
One of my favorite lunch places. I seem to go weekly these days. Great value, great selection, and relatively good quality. There is plenty to choose from but I only need to eat 20% of the selection before I am stuffed. My favorites are the hargow and egg tarts. There is a nice selection of popular dim sum items at the dim sum table. In addition, there is a dessert table, a soup table, 2 appetizer/salad/fruit tables (that includes cold shrimp and mussels), and 2 main course tables.
When my husband's sister suggested going here for a spur-of-moment family meal, I must admit I was not expecting much. I pictured a Foody Goody- or Uncle Willy's- type experience and prepared for the worst, especially after reading a few reviews here and on other sites. The association with Hon's (the former occupant of the location) added to my skepticism, but I was willing to give it a chance. Besides, when the family says "let's go out to eat" you go, right? A reservation for 14 was made and off we went.
After a rather comical communication gap when we arrived, we were seated by a very pleasant and friendly young woman. I was happy to see that the restaurant appeared much cleaner and brighter than before. There are new tables and chairs, flooring, lighting and "decor". It has been renovated to accommodate the buffet area and the kitchen is now behind closed doors. Pitchers of water and tea were placed on our tables and we proceeded to check out the offerings.
There are several "stations" in the buffet area including cold appetizers, salads, 2 hot food steam tables, fruit, sushi/sashimi, dim sum & desserts and a small table near the dim sum area with a rice cooker on it for "bak fan". The salads were nothing special, so I skipped that and went straight to the hot food. There was a great variety including spareribs, fish, mussels in the shell, chicken wings, cut-your-own beef pot roast, chow mein, two kinds of fried rice, octopus, spring rolls, cracked crab, a couple of chicken dishes, spicy green beans, a broccoli dish, vegetables with shrimp, dumplings and several more. Descriptions are nowhere to be found so you just have to go by visual appeal and let me tell you it all looked pretty good! I took small helpings of many different items, thinking I would try the other dishes on my second pass, but everything was so good I just wanted more of what I had. I was very impressed with the colour and freshness of the vegetables (especially the green beans) and the abundance of protein. For instance, there were tons of large, whole shrimp in the fried rice as well as in the vegetables and the fish, crab, chicken and beef were very plentiful in spite of their popularity. All of the dishes seemed to be replenished promptly. My only complaint about the food is that the chow mein was a bit bland and dry but it improved when sauce from other things on my plate was mixed in (the joy of a buffet!). After two plates I was totally stuffed and satisfied. I didn't have room for any of the dessert items (ice cream, pastries, chinese dessert soup, etc) but had a plate of fresh fruit and mango jelly instead. The fruit was fantastic - ripe cantaloupe and honeydew melon , juicy pineapple, sweet red grapes, kiwi halves, quartered oranges, and strawberries that were sweet and full of flavour in spite of their massive size. These people know how to buy fruit!
I found the service to be very efficient - our water and tea pitchers were constantly refilled (I did have to ask the first time but after that they were right on top of it). These are not the kind of people who are going to tell you their name and do everything but sit down and eat with you, but I found them efficient, friendly and attentive. Their job is mostly clearing plates and responding to requests like more napkins and cutlery and they do it well.
I agree that the floor is dangerous - it is slippery and uneven (dark "hardwood" laminate - not the best choice of material for this application and poorly installed). Also, they need to keep their bussing area tidier. This is where they take the dirty dishes, fill water and tea jugs, etc. I noticed food and debris spilled on the floor that should have been cleaned up if only for safety's sake. They are very busy but a couple of swipes with a broom or mop would have helped, especially when it is an area that diners can see. I noticed a wet, dirty towel on the floor near one of the cold food tables, presumably there to absorb water from a leak. It wasn't a hazard or anything but was a bit off-putting. I didn't use the washroom but my daughter said it was "OK, about the same as before." which doesn't sound great.
For $16 each, I think the food was above average for quality, quantity, variety and flavour. No complaints about the service, but they could work on the safety and cleanliness. Oh, and English labels on the buffet would really help.
If you're looking for good Chinese food, perhaps give this a miss. Dinner is $16.00 per person. The most expensive item on the buffet is crab, but it's too overcooked and not fresh. There's a few dishes with shrimp, and dim sum, but nothing that is worth $16.00. Basically you are paying to get variety. The service is slow as we had to ask for tea a few times. Our plates were not collected and had to ask everytime. The food was always running out and there were never enough servers to fill it up. There were 6 of us, with a total bill of just under $100.00. For that, we could have gone to a better restaurant and had a very good meal. The food was basically chow mein, noodles, fried rice, stir fries, sweet and sour pork, fried chicken, fried fish all fried using old oil. Dessert of swiss rolls, almond cookies which tasted like the store made variety, jello and ice cream (which ran out). So yes, you get alot of variety but nothing that I would return for. This in my opinion would be for someone who's never had Chinese food and would want the variety. For those who appreciate better quality, perhaps take your money to another restaurant and order a la carte.
I went there with my family as a birthday dinner for my sister. We heard from her friend that it was a relatively good place to eat and she recommended it to us.It started off with entering the restaurant and I was pleased to see that the price of eating a buffet was pretty good. However, once I step foot in the restaurant, not only was the hardwood floor slippery, the level of the floors were really uneven. This could be a big hazard for future customers who are carrying their plate of food or kids as well. I've gave this restaurant the benefit of the doubt because the restaurant was empty but it was also on a Monday night. However, as I went to take a look at what there was to eat, it was less than impressive. The eggplants were sour, the chicken were undercooked, and many others seem to be left out for a long period of time. The only thing I thought were decent, were the fruits that were provided there. Other than that, nothing was particularly good. The service itself wasn't that pleasing either as the manager(assuming) were touching the top of our cups which seemed very unsanitary to me. The atmosphere itself wasn't that great either. I felt extremely uncomfortable and pretty disappointed at the whole restaurant.
I suggest they get a better cook and change their flooring.
My girlfriend and I saw this new place opened in Richmond and wanted to try it out, so today we and 3 of our friends went there to give this a try. The ambiance of this place is... well, it was the Hons before this place took over, so it's very standard Chinese restaurant decor. Dinner was 16 dollars, and as a buffet, it's not too bad. The food selection was pretty good; There was cooked Chinese food, seafood (with decent salmon sashimi too), and also a corner for dim sum (quality is quite decent too). Desert selection was not the greatest but it's ok. There was jello and mango pudding (standard Chinese stuff haha), and also some ice cream. My girlfriend and I particularly enjoyed their orange ice cream (they called it mango though, for some reason), but unfortunately, that was popular and it went out :(
All went pretty well and my girlfriend and I was actually thinking of taking her dad to here for his birthday dinner, but all of this change at the time when we leave. The owner (it seems like the owner) of the restaurant came to our table when we are done and was checking (we think he's checking) our table. He then picked up one dim sum bamboo basket which we have 2 chive dumblings left over. Those were left over because my girlfriend likes chive dumplings, but when she ate it she found out there is shrimp inside, which she doesn't like (we thought it's pork in the dumping, and there was no description of the food at the buffet counter). The owner picked up the basket and said to us, in a kind of mean tone, "no waste food", and glared at us.
I totally understand how these AYCE places would have policies to penalize people for being so greedy and waste a lot of food (e.g. take 30 salmon sashimi and just eat 5 pieces). We were not doing that at all. Our table was all cleaned except for that 2 dumplings. We feel extremely disrespected and the owner gave us the feeling that he is super stingy. We will never return to this place, and will not even complain to the owner to teach him how not to piss off their customers.
