Worst Korean food I have ever had
By jaejunkwak of Vancouver (10 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, March 20, 2011 - 5:52pm [Dine in]

Keep in mind that I may be a bit biased as I am, after all, Korean. And I may judge them a bit harshly, as they tend to create abominations out of the recipes to save themselves a few pennies.

If you believe that the restaurant's food is solid for its price, I would assume that you:
1. had no previous experience with Korean food
or
2. you simply have never had a solid Korean food at a solid Korean restaurant.

One thing I noticed straight off the bat was the low quality of food. It'd be quite silly to set the expectation bar high in terms of quality at an All-You-Can-Eat, but the quality was just abysmal.

The pork belly tasted not only old, and they had not even gotten rid of the skin of the pork. This is purely out of laziness, and ruined the taste.

When the two soups available in the AYCE came out, I was shocked. One of the beef soup was simply the broth that is left behind when they boil the meat for their main course menu hotpots. Simply that. No other ingredients. The other soup was egg soup - again, just the egg boiled in water.

The pancake lacked any ingredients. The japchae was the biggest abomination of food I had ever seen. Instead of the marinating andthe variety of vegetables it should have (it's something like a Korean noodle salad that's served cold) it was simply this wad of noodle that had been soaked in sauce. Imagine ordering a salad at an Italian restaurant and all you got was lettuce and dressing. That's how I felt.

I will never be coming back here. As for the people who will be going back, you have my condolences, as I find it quite disturbing that they trick foreigners with their horrible food and altered-for-pennies recipes.

It's not that bad

First of all, you never go to an ayce place if you're looking for top quality or service, it just doesn't happen. Having said that, this place is not bad, especially if you're into meat. We went for an early dinner, and were the only ones in the restaurant the entire time...that might explain why service was not bad, albeit a bit slow. However, the lady was kind enough to point out which items we should try, because they were only available on the dinner menu and were the more expensive cuts. I would never expect any business to do that, so I appreciated her input.

We tried most of the meats, and aside from some fatty pieces of short rib, they were all good. The vegetables were lacking though. They were just thrown on the grill dry with no seasoning at all. The seafood pancake was not very good, mostly pancake with not much in it. The dubokki and jap chae arrived cold, but were still tasty. The soups were passable, but not worth taking up room in your stomach unless you're really craving soup. The side dishes were ok, not the best but not the worst - at least they gave us heaping dishes of them so we didn't have to ask for more. The dumpling and chicken with sweet sauce did not impress. The only thing we did not receive from our order was the rice...which was probably a good thing since we were so full from all the meat.

The restaurant itself is large, and the decor is comfortable dark colors. If you want to load up on meat, this is a good place to go. $20 for ayce bbq is not bad. Definitely not a place to go if you're on a diet or looking for healthy food.

Good AYCE Korean lunch
By panda of Burnaby (56 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, January 11, 2009 - 10:22pm [Dine in]

My friend and I went for lunch on Fri. We were impressed with the restaurant, it was nicely decorated and stylish. I like the fact there were private rooms. Plus, the restaurant has 2 sections, one room for AYCE and the other section for a la carte.
We went for AYCE lunch and we were not disappointed. The food was delicious! I love beef short ribs, so I was impressed with their cuts of meat. I was expecting small cuts of meat, but not this place. We also had 5 side dishes of veggies. For $12.99, it was a good deal. But I don't think I would bother coming for dinner. Their dinner menu was similiar to the lunch except for the extra beef cuts. No extra seafood added. They charged $19!!
The service was good. The waitress did come by several times to check up on us. But we had to flagged them down to check up on our missing orders.
I would of rated the ambiance higher, but I was cold cuz the vent was on very high and the cold breeze was blowing around the room. I found the ventilation a bit loud and ignoring. I had to eat my lunch fast or else my food turn cold fast. I noticed that other patrons were wearing their jackets while eating. I think I will wait til the weather warms up, before I will go back again. At least, I didn't smell like BBQ when I left the restaurant.
Recommended for lunch.

a korean joke

I am a fan of korean food and I am fastidious about it. The appetizers couldve tasted better, especially the kimchi that tasted like supermarket kimchi. The grilled mackerel was over grilled. Japchae had too much oil and pepper. Bibimbap was average. The bill came to $50 for only me and my mom! I could drive downtown or to Burnaby and spend $20 t $30 on fresh homemade and authentic Korean food and feel as stuffed as a pig. However, the service and he decor was decent enough. I recommend this restaurant to meat lovers.

Lunch AYCE $12.95
By Spelunca of Vancouver (45 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, August 1, 2009 - 10:03am [Dine in]

Food: I didn't know that beef ribs could be this fatty. Sirloin was better, as was the chicken and squid. Chap Chae and seafood pancake-although sparse in ingredients and oily-were not bad while the appetizer plates pale in quality to real Korean restaurants. Certainly edible overall but expect AYCE quality.

Service: decent although didn't come around very often.

Value: at $12.95 for ACYE lunch, we stayed for two hours and certainly managed to extract enough value for that price.

Ambiance: newer place, probably a bit better seating than your typical ACYE. other side of the restaurant seats regular menu customers.

Food Just OK, Service Really Bad!!!

I and my friends are really DISAPPOINTED with the services at Kim Ga Nae. Yesterday, I and my friends went to this restaurant for a dinner. We are really disappointed with the service. We ordered a number of items and only half of them came out. The foods were just OK. When we asked something from the waitress, they are really rude. Even in our last order, we ordered another bowls of soup. The waitress just grabbed the paper and threw it on the bin (in front of us), and guess what! The soup never came out.

I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone.

not authentic

The food is so not authentic, I feel like eating Chinese food not Korean food. You might as well buy Korean sauce, Korean spice, and other Korean products at TT or Yoham and make it yourself (make sure it's made in Korea in order to get real Korean food flavor, no local stuff or made in Chine stuff please). It will be more authentic than Kim Ga Nae and taste even better.

I used to have Korean food in Los Angeles, where there's a lot of Korean restaurants operated and owned by Korean. Korean food in Richmond is pathetic.

Great value for AYCE
By mmmsteak of Richmond (74 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, December 29, 2008 - 5:46pm [Dine in]

This place has great value for AYCE. Lunch and late night (starting at 9pm) are just 12.99. There's not many korean BBQ places that offer this kind of deal.

The decor is simple and clean, and the staff is very friendly. We had some spilling accidents and demanding people at our table, and they accommodated every request with speed. The food is very decent (especially for AYCE) with a good selection of traditional korean dishes. However some of the fried dishes came cold. Ventilation was also on high, which is a plus for no smokiness and a minus for additional cold breeze during winter.

No matter, we will definitely be back on late hungry nights!

i love korean bbq and this place is tops on my list in terms of food. I came here for the first time for dinner AYCE. the food was GREAT. the meat was incredible. there was absolutely no service to the point where we amongst others were ignored. we had to waive our arms many times for tea refill. one thing to watch out for is the amount of food they give you. like any other AYCE you 'll rarely get all the food you order but this place is 100% guarantee you won't get 20% of the food you order. nonetheless the food is so good that i will be returning but i might bring my own bottles of water

ok since there is only few AYCE Korean restaurants in BC me and my friends decided to try this one. The service was abolutely terrible. the service was slow but the food didn't come to our table as we ordered. we got 7 people and we were all hungry so we ordered like 3 seafood pancakes since each was pretty small. but they only gave us one. and the seafood pancake only had one piece squird in there the rest was pancake. the BBQ, Korean style fried chicken, and fried Gyoza were only ok and didn't really impress me. I would rather spend more money on other Korean restaurants that have better service and tastier food. I won't definitely come back again.

Continue Review from the one below

at 8:45, we noticed they have late-nite AYCE people, and we're about time to leave. So my friend told the waitress can you clean up one of our tables then we can cut the cake. she told us "You have to clean up all the food otherwise you will be charged" Her attitude was super rude. The reason why we ask her to clean up coz she's doing nothing all night long.
my friend replied her, "We will finish these meat, we just want to cut the cake first coz some of friends want to leave first." She still didn't clean up the table, the restaurant boss was in the store at that time, and he noticed we are not happy so he came up bring my cake and clean the table for us.

We have no Knife to cut the cake, no extra small plates, no forks!!!
I really don't know what are the waiter and waitress doing!!! This was the most horrible service I've ever had. I was your biggest customer on that night, if you can provide a good service to us, half of your tips tonight are in your pocket already!!! Please think deeper....don't just be a stupid slave.

My friend was really mad, and she has told everything what happened to the Restaurant Boss. The Boss has came to me and apologized. I was the B-day girl on that night, so I cannot be angry.

We still paid tips to them, coz the big group and we stayed around 3 hours in total. The food was excellent, but extremely poor and rude services.
I hope the Boss can teach his staff to provide a better service in the future.

Great late night BBQ

Submitted Thursday, June 18, 2009 - 12:07am [Dine in]

Walking into the restaurant, I was surprised at how big the place is and clean-cut it looked. We arrived close to 9:00pm and had the late night menu. For $13, I don't think you can go wrong. There was a wide selection of items on then menu - some to be cooked on the grill and some hot and cold dishes. The only thing that turned me off was the seafood pancake - it was so greasy and nasty, it seemed like it was sitting in oil for the last hour. I will never order that ever again.

Many people have commented on bad service, but we certainly didn't received horrible service. You can't expect too much when you're at an AYCE because there are so many people being served at the same time. All you have to do is order large orders and when you're running out of food, make another one so you're not stuck constantly waiting for more food to come.

Service Fail and Oily Food
By lollicockshock of vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Wednesday, December 30, 2009 - 2:21am [Dine in]

I went there today for a birthday dinner. Not only do the managers lack the ability to speak and understand English fluently, but also they lack the common sense to put an ICE CREAM CAKE in the freezer - they put it in the fridge until I reminded them twice. The place looks pretty nice, but the BBQ was small and hard to cook in. The service was ABSOLUTELY HORRID! They never came up with the napkins and drinks; so, I had to either get the stuff myself or walk up to them and clearly remind them. A lot of other orders didn't come either, and when they did, they came AFTER we paid the bill (like the 7 bowls of beef soup) Why they had bad service? BECAUSE THEY ONLY HAVE TWO PEOPLE ON THE FLOOR, WAITRESSING THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT! Furthermore, the food didn't make up for the horrible service; it was extremely oily, unvaried, and poor quality. When we paid the bill, the waitress explicitly demanded a 15% tip. Even though they didn't deserve the tip AT ALL because of the COMPLETE ABSENCE (NOT LACK) OF SERVICE, we still paid the tip. I will NEVER return to this building they call a "restaurant."

I went to eat at kim ga nae with some of my friends to celebrate one of their birthday. Went in with a good mood, came out with a bad mood. There was no service whatsoever. If we ask for sauces or water, nothing comes. We had to get our own. The orders came extremely slow and some didn't even come at all! The food was average and ventilation was horrible, as if the vent isn't opened at all. Worst part was paying the bills. The cashier at the front desk made each of us pay tips, which is illegal because we, as customers can choose whether to pay tips or not. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant.

Went there with a bunch of friends on Friday for lunch. The food came extremely slow eventhough there was less than 5 tables. Only one waitress was working and we had to get up and grab our own stuff (sauce, water....). The ventillation was poor which made the whole place stuffy. Half of the orders never came.

Okay place to fill up on meat

Although we are not fans of AYCE (as most places skimp on quality ingredients), some friends recommended this place for Korean BBQ so we decided to drop in. We went at lunch time and it was quiet. Only 2 other tables of two. We were served quickly, and the food came out quickly. The meat was decent and since we cook it ourselves, we didn't have to worry about it being over/undercooked.
We were pretty full when we left and for $12.95 a person, we felt it was a good lunch. The seafood pancake was good. The chap chae had a funny taste to it. The side dishes were okay. The short ribs were decent, the pork belly a little tough and the other meats were okay as well. Would come back if we were starving and in the neighbourhood.

Been here twice for the late night AYCE for $12.95. First time, we went just before 9:30 but didn't get seated until 10PM because it was so busy, the second time we went early at 8:45 and got seated right away. The dinner menu was very limited, which is fine, since we went for the meat anyway. The service was okay, what you would typically expect from an Asian restaurant. I found that the ladies weren't so attentive, some didn't even speak english. We got the same waiter twice, the asian guy with the short hair and ponytail, he was pretty friendly. The only major problem was that the grills were too small, you had to cram everything in there and when you're hungry, its not fun!

i came here for a party of 15 and i booked beforehand so i was expecting better seating but they gave us one fairly small table for 13 of us (we were quite squished and there were only 2 bbq places) and another table for 2. we tried to get them to give us another table but they wouldn't.

we ordered all you can eat bbq. the food came very slowly and since our table was small there was no place for dirty dishes to be put yet they never came by to get it unless we asked repeatedly. that was the same with food, we had to ask repeatedly for refill of kimchi dishes or other food. overall it was pretty bad and slow.

there were only 27 choices of food and only a few selection of meat. 27 may sound like a lot but most of it is vegetables. the selection was quite limited and we found ourselves eating the same food over and over.

the bbq cooked really slowly so we didn't get to eat much food as the food cooked very slowly.

Good beef, slow service.

Went here for a friend's birthday. Easy to find location, right across from Aberdeen and a bus loop. The restaurant looks spacious and new and you can smell the bbq as soon as you step in the door. Owned by koreans, always a better sign. The beef/chicken/ribs/pork belly were good. They claimed to only serve Alberta AAA beef and their marinate sauce was a perfect compliment to it. The side dishes were mediocre, but the service was the worst thing about the restaurant. Incredibly slow. Takes about 30 - 45 minutes for our orders to come and you have to beg them for water. But if you plan your order, you'd be satisfied by the end of the night.
Lunch & late-night price: $13.
Dinner: $20.

They put too much MSG
By jc21666 of Richmond (5 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, February 13, 2009 - 10:26pm [Dine in]

We went there two weeks ago at 7pm for AYCE. Service was slow, but it was ok since there is only one waiter there. That waiter was very good and move fast.
We just realized they put lots of MSG with there meat once we came back home. I felt so thirsty entire night. We had tofu soup and pork bone with potato soup, that were worst I have never seen in my life. No tast for tofu soup, and pork bone potato soup tast like instant noodle soup. Beef was too soft and no texture, it seemed they put lots of tender powder and MSG. If they have fresh beef, then I think they do not need to marinate by that way.
I may not go there next time, since we still have few good Korean restaurant in Richmond. This one offer cheaper price, but I think food quality is important as well.
