Great Service

Food - I ordered a chicken caesar salad, so it's hard to rate the food based on a simple salad. Nonetheless, it was a good salad! The chicken was not dry and there wasn't too much/too little dressing. Although my friend who ordered another type of salad was missing the sunflower seeds, raisins, and such. For dessert, I ordered the apple crumble and I dunno, it just wasn't that good.

Service - Seated right away. Had a party of 10, and were welcomed and greeted quickly and pleasantly. Our waiter was great and had a great sense of humour. Helped my friend get though missing seeds from her salad without trouble.

Value - Like most other western restaurants. My salad cost around $12.50 and dessert was almost $7. Not too horrific, but there are cheaper places out there.

Ambiance - Very family friendly. Nicely lit. Clean and welcoming!

We've always enjoyed eating at Kelsey's. I love the ambiance. It's clean, not too casual or too pretentious, it just makes us feel welcomed. I agree that the portion size can be kinda small, but we always order dessert after. We had the calamari to start and while it was tasty on its own, the dip it came with had no flavour. I usually order the Sonoma Valley salad with chicken, and it's always been really delicious with fresh veggies and nuts and fruits. The chicken strips are always full of flavour and well seasoned. My friend ordered the BBQ chicken pizza and we both thought it was great but maybe a tad too sweet. Still good though! We ordered 3 desserts after and all were excellent.

Their dinner and movie deal: but any entree more than $9.99 and get a Cineplex movie ticket for $7.50. Regular ticket price is usually $11.99 so it's a good deal if you don't mind standing in line to use those tickets (you can't use them online to order tickets in advance).

We'll be back again and again for sure!

Kelsey's Kicks up the Service

I'm guessing that the sour economy has made this chain restaurant kick up the service a touch.

The bossman took us out for lunch on this sunny Friday, and I enjoyed a Prime Rib Philly Sandwich with a side of caesar salad. The service was noticably more attentive and friendly than I have experienced in a while.

We were greated by two hostesses when we entered and seated promptly. We were given many choices of where we wanted to eat, and also given a run down of the menu (we were told that the menu would be changing shortly, and that some items would not be available on the new menu). The server came by and took our drink orders, and the food arrived fairly quickly considering that they were now entering their lunch rush.

I did not have high expectations for the food. The food was a touch better than I expected. The caesar salad was flood with dressing; I'd advise asking for the dressing on the side; however, they had really tasty, coarse-grated parmesan garnishing the salad. The gravy for the sandwich was actually really disgusting. I do believe, as I am writing this, that I am feeling the onset of an msg-induced headache. And I am not sensitive to msg! The sandwich itself however, was pretty tasty. Thick slices of meat on a crisp demi baguette with mushrooms, peppers, and broiled cheese.

A co worker had the peppercorn burger, which he said was decent. A nice sesame and poppy seed bun, breaded onion rings, and fries.

The bill came with a thank you note from the waiter, which we noted was a nice personal touch. We were given great service on the way out as well, with the hostess asking how everything was and another staff opening the door for us on the way out. It did make an impression, even if the food was not stellar.

We went to Kelsey's since it was on the way to the movie theatres, and it was a pitstop we won't be making again. While the service was decent, and we got to watch the game on any of the 6 screens by the bar (we chose a booth seat), the plates came half empty. I just expected a full plate when ribs with fries and a salad are supposed to fit on one plate, maybe adding some fries would've helped the half-empty look. Our food didn't take too long to come, but it wasn't anything special. The side salads are quite small as well, which is a little confusing as Kelsey's no fine dining establishment. All in all, not worthy of a second try.

We went to Kelsey's because we saw an add for free chicken wings. Apparently so did everyone else in richmond. They were really really busy so maybe that explains our poor treatment and the fact that our food was obviously suddenly remembered five seconds before it was delivered. We were ushered in by a really friendly employee and our server was nice enough, they all had very cheerful attitudes. But that does not change the fact that the nachos we ordered did not come with anything on them. It was basically a warm stack of bare nacho chips. Kind of a shock after reading the list of ingredients on the menu. The chicken wings were alright but did not come with napkins. Napkins are a necessity when eating chicken wings so we thought to ask for some, well after being totally ignored for about twenty minutes one of us got up and asked the first staff member they saw for some napkins, this happened to be the one of the managers who then gave us six napkins and wandered off mumbling something about being sorry about that. Altogether not the best restaurant experience I've ever had.

We wanted to like it, but....

...we just didn't have a good experience here. Out of so many dining options in the lower mainland, we chose Kelsey's this particular evening because 1) I thought (correctly) they would have the hockey game on in their bar, 2) we'd never been to a Kelsey's and wanted to give one a try - largely because I thought it looked a bit like a Moxie's, where I've had good eats before, 3) it was one of the restaurants available to us on the gift card my employers gave me for Christmas.

And the outcome? Well, the hockey game was good...but that was about all. We had a brief stint in the bar waiting for a table. The bartender - a young lad - was friendly but didn't know his wines despite the incredibly short wine list he had to work with. Pretty inexcusable but he laughed about it and had us laughing along with him. That alone wouldn't be any kind of biggy - and seriously: if you're a wine snob what the heck are you doing in a Kelsey's anyway, right? So, the waitress comes to fetch us and off we go to our table.

What greets us when we get there? Litter all over the floor in that section. And when I say litter, I mean french fries, candy wrappers, bit of other food and garbage. It was pretty appalling even by the standards of an inner-city McDonalds. We asked to be moved and promptly were - to the adjoining section where we still had the garbage from the previous section in plain view :-(. I should note here that the garbage remained in situ during our entire stay. When do they clean this place?

We would have (should have) walked out at this point, but it was already getting late, we were both starving, and the hockey game was still on. Besides, we told ourselves, the ultimate proof in in the food.

We started with an appetizer of the Blue Cheese Kettle Chips. It arrived hot and was ample for two people. The chips themselves weren't the dry, thick kettle chips you'd buy in the snack food section at a grocery store, but rather fresh scalloped potato chips that had been deep fried on premise. There was ample cheese to go with them, but I'm pretty sure the "Blue Cheese" dressing - which the title of the appetizer would lead you to believe was the star of this nosh - was just bottled salad dressing. Disappointing, but on the whole the appy was okay.

I followed with the Chicken Sonoma Valley Salad as my entree. It sounded great on the menu - "Mixed greens topped with seasoned grilled chicken, red peppers, grape tomatoes, crumbled Feta cheese, croutons, raisins, mixed seeds and nuts. Served with our spicy honey citrus dressing." What arrived did indeed contain most of those ingredients, but unless iceberg lettuce comes in more than one variety, it was the sole constituent of the "mixed greens", the feta cheese was conspicuous by its near total absence, and the chicken was under-seasoned and overcooked.

My partner ordered the Balsamic Chicken with Yukon Gold mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. After a long wait it arrived mostly cold and very dry, as though the kitchen had started off with the original dish in mind but decided on pemmican at the last minute, almost like something a survivalist would expect to reconstitute with water from his/her BHP-free water bottle while out on a weekend Walden fantasy.

We sent it back.

The manager came out and was quasi-apologetic, blaming the food and the dirt on how busy they were. And indeed they were busy - the place was nearly full when we arrived. I'm not sure if this is more a reflection on the scarcity of dining options in Steveston, or on the already low level of expectations of those who frequent Kelsey's. The staff seemed very young, and not particularly well-trained or managed. In fairness our waitress was very earnest and genuinely seemed concerned about our poor dining experience. The food certainly wasn't her fault.

Maybe we did just catch Kelsey's on an off-night. But still...to get it so wrong on so many levels? For the same money, one can dine much better elsewhere. At least the hockey game was good!
