We went here for a special night out and that was a mistake. I love the Keg but this one has been consistently poor in food quality. Maybe I'm wrong or behind the times but when I pay $30 for an entre I expect it to be hot and fresh...this one or should I say our meals had to have been sitting on the warming rack while we ate our app's. The prime rib meat top surface was all dried out and cold...the onions (deep fried ones) were cold.
When my date asked politely if the prime rib was heavy with fat tonight (sometimes it is and that OK, we just don't order it that night...no biggie) the waiter seemed put off about that but offered to check. He disappeared for 3 seconds (not enough time to make it to the kitchen) then returned with a no it good reply.
A word to the wise here...don't order your entre till you are ready to eat it or it will get the heat lamp blues. No more Keg in Richmond for me thank you very much.
Had a family Valentine's Day dinner. Since we got there at 5 pm, we were seated right away...not so for the patrons arriving past 5:15, quite busy by then.
I ordered the New York Classic dinner which arrived perfectly done (rare), the boys both had half rack ribs with Caesar salad and they really liked theirs, and the hubby ordered the Rib Steak which he ordered at med-rare which came exactly as that. The boys loved eating their Dad's "frizzled"(?) onions--usually they don't like onions but obviously loved the way Keg makes their onions.
All in all, it was a great way to spend Valentine's Day. Oh, they also give a mini (4 squares) of chocolate for you to take home--pleasant surprise.
Took a girlfriend to impress her and now she wants to go back all the time. Food and service top notched. Appetisers great. Try the garlic bread. House salad dressing the best I've ever tasted. rib and steak dishes superb. Highly recommended. Keg and their staff really know how to welcome you.No cutie waitresses but I bring my own and she is impressed. Wine is expensive tho.
I always enjoy a steak at the Keg. I usually go for the classic steak with ceasar salad and and loaded baked potato is always yummy :)
Last time I was at the Keg, it was a very busy night and I had made a reservation on the same day, my wife and I showed up and were brought to our table right a way. The best part was hearing another woman say to her husband "Why didn't you make a reservation!?" :)
I do miss the salad bar that the Keg Richmond had when I was a kid, my family used to go to this location every Friday. Now I only get to go a few times a year.
Greatest restaurant ever. never been anywhere better. I love it so much. The food is unbelievable and the environment is great. i love this restaurant so much. always coming back. this was just the best restaurant experience of my life. plus the food is great. the steak is to die for. overall, unbelievable.
On Friday Sept 10, 2010 my husband and i decided to go out for dinner. I called up the Keg in Richmond at 6 p.m. to request a reservation for 7 p.m. No problem the host says. We arrived about 7:05 p.m. and were seated within 2 minutes. Our server was a very personable young man, his name is Jared. Within a few minutes our wine was served and our order was taken. The Casear salad arrived promptly and after finishing it we waited approximately 5 minutes for our entree. Our steaks were done perfectly, my only complaint was that my baked potato was not hot at all. Jared immediately replaced it with a piping hot one. I was getting full and i wanted to save some room for dessert so i asked to have the balance of my meal packaged to go. No problem. I then ordered the cherry cheesecake which was absolutely fabulous!! So good that i ordered a piece to go as well. We topped off our meal with a special coffee. The only criticism i have is that the tables for two are pretty small but other than that it was a great dining experience. Upon our leaving the manager Jacqueline thanked us for coming and was very pleased to hear our positive comments about our evening. We will definitely be back!!!
My Girlfriend and i decided to go to the keg after we finished a long day of work. When we got there it was very busy but there was room at the bar so we sat there. The bartender that was got was Charmain, she was outstanding. We decided to screw waiting for a table and just have charmain serve us. The food was awesome the atmosphere was solid and we just had a good time overall. The keg is and will always be one of my favorite spots in richmond.
The Keg used to be a favorite for our family. Recently the quality of food and service has deteriorated dramatically.
There is no more salad bar. Service is very poor, possibly due to the heavy business the staff don't feel that they have to provide service. Steaks are never cooked to the desired degree of cooking and had to be returned.
Possibly a few drinks at the bar before the meal will make the experience better, since you won't notice the quality much.
Unless you have lots of money to throw away and don't care about food or service quality, I would find a better place.
Our son, who was down on business from NS, took us to the Keg a couple of weeks ago, and I must say it was better than the last time.
The food is always good, but the service leaves something to be desired.
Our server this particular night must have been hung over because he was not very talkative and was very surly. Once the food was served we did not see him again until he delivered the bill.
This is not what the Keg is about.
They used to be OUTSTANDING.
The keg use to be one of those favorite gathering spots for our family; especially this location, as we've been coming since I was a child. But as the years went by, I've notice the service have been dimnishing, along with their food. Let me tell you about my experience last week.
My sister, her boyfriend, my father and myself were dining that night, and we came in seperate cars. When me, my sister and her boyfriend arrived, there was no host/hostess standing at the door. The other waitor/hostess, clearly saw us, but decided to ignore us. we stood there for about 5 mins and still no one had even ask if we need a table. The night was NOT busy at all, and no one even approached us until we started wandering around the restaurant looking to see if my father had arrived. When we did finally sat down, the waitor seem like he did not want to be there. His mind was compeltely checked out, as i had to repeate myself numerous times. After taking our orders, he failed to take away the wine glasses; none of us were having wine, and as a basic "serving" rule, you take away the wine glasses if they are not being used. When the waitor was bringing our food over, he constantly kept reaching in front of me as if i wasn't there. More than twice, did he almost knock over my drink and did not apologize. When i was eating my steak, he would reach in front of me to grab the bread bowl without warning. Our whole table thought it was one of the rudiest thing a server could do. When my father asked for his drink, he waitor completely forgot about it and did not end up bringing it to him until 20mins later , and once again no apology. I felt like I was eating at some back alley.
The food was ok, veggies are undercook, while the steak was mediocre.
Because of the terrible service i've experienced, I WILL NOT recommand this place for anybody! I think all the servers need to attend a hospitality course, as their manners are terrible. If the keg wants to keep its reputation, they have to stop hiring ppl who dun wanan be there , and make sure everyone is properly trained.
Reading the reviews here, not much has changed over the past several years. It's comforting to know our experience wasn't isolated in lack of service.
The server was friendly enough taking our order, but the food arrived almost an hour later. The only other time we saw the waiter was when he dropped off the bill. The experience left our family leaving this restaurant shaking our heads and I swore never to return to the Richmond Keg.
But I really miss a good local steak restaurant.
I have been going to the Richmond Keg for over 25 years now. I grew up in Richmond enjoying going to the Keg for their great food. I wanted to add a little note about one of the best waiters I have ever had the experience to meet in my short life of 37 years. Greg Z. who was working there when i was in high school, and just recently in the last couple of year is back. Not only is it nice to see an older person help out the young bucks, but it adds character to a place that has been around for quite a while. he is always cheerful & smiling and works very, very hard and it shows he is very professional and does a great job. I don't know if anyone from his restaurant reads these sites, but, you can bet that he is one of the only waiters there who gets plenty of requests to have him be there server. have a good night & "See you & the Keg"
