Went here with the family and had dimsum lunch. We were told that they do not charge for tea which is incorrect. They not only charge you for tea, but they charge per person. They even charged our 2 infants....like a baby is going to drink hot tea. I find it stupid that they charge per person as they only have one tea pot and another one with hot water. They are not refilling it with fresh tea or anything. You could have 10 people or one person but you still get one tea pot and another one with hot water only. They even add up incorrectly.....so watch your bill as they add on a few dollars here and there. Well the dimsum was ok. Nothing to rave about. The advertisement outside states that they have $1.99/dish...which they do but they are few and far between. Most of the dishes are $3.00-$5.00/dish. They are not dimsum a la cart but you order it from a form. You do not get to see what you are getting but at least they come out hot and fresh. You have to pay for parking which is $4.00/3hrs yet you get that back when you present them with the ticket stub. Overall there are too many other dimsum places that have better value.
Perhaps it wasn't all their fault. My friend and I were hungry very late at night and we've already driven around Richmond for a bit. Too hungry to venture further we came here. I've seen the sign off No. 3 before and it usually looks busy so how bad can it be.
We strategically sat right by the kitchen entrance so we wouldn't be missed on such a large floor but a server still took a while to come. We only ordered a large bowl of Chicken Congee with 2 orders of Chinese Donut and thank goodness that was all.
Our order took a little longer than I'd like, with the congee coming first. Expecting something fairly decent I was shocked at how it was prepared. Either they ran out of ingredients to make it, the cook was in a fit, or something even more unsavoury that I wouldn't want to know. The chicken was nothing more than a half order of Soy Chicken that was skinned and poorly trimmed of meat and dumped into a large serving bowl. The congee portion was terrible as well. It was clearly burnt and the lingering aftertaste only confirmed it. The consistency looked as if they used leftover rice and watered it down and then have the cook run off somewhere while it was charring away. If that wasn't enough there were speckles of burnt congee scrapings throughout as if the cook then went out of his way to scrape the pot clean as if it was their heroic (and ironic) attempt to save all the "good" stuff.
The donut was equally appauling coming out cold and soaked in oil. We politely asked one of the servers (when one finally came out of hiding) to reheat them only to have it come back out none the better than it went in.
We maybe ate a couple small bowls before we gave up and paid so we could leave. For those who are wondering why we didn't complain. Well there are several reasons but firstly it's the kitchen's responsibility to control how the food is going out. Secondly if our food initially came out like this already I personally wouldn't want the same people to "fix" it.
This really was the only time I can remember where I didn't leave a tip. Really the only saving grace for any hope in this place would be the decent surroundings and tea.
I don't know how their hotpot and dim sum are but my experience is enough for me to never come back to again. Customers dining at late hours are no excuse for food to be made like that. Prices aren't even good either they're a few bucks (per dish) more than other places.
RUN!!
First time at this restaurant. Looked promising, with an extensive dim sum menu advertised at 1.99 per dish. My companion and I tried several dishes that were all good.
The problem begins here: despite having to flag down 3 different servers, we never got our last dish. After waiting an hour, we decided to pay our bill minus the dish that never arrived. Rather than acknowledging their oversight, the cashier argued with me. She then overcharged for the dish which never arrived. When I pointed that out, she debated me again. She furthered by 'reminding' me to leave a tip. I decided to leave nothing.
Among the worse service experienced in Lower Mainland. As a Chinese, I'm embarrassed by their behavior and offended by their attitude. Will not be returning.
I've never had the hotpot here, but the dim sum is awesome. Always piping hot and pretty delicious. It can get busy here, but if you come before the lunch rush, it's not bad. The BBQ pork bun is big and the Prawn dumplings are a good size. We are always given a large round table even for 3 people! The bill came to around $30 for around 7 dishes - not the cheapest by far, but the dim sum is fresh and tasty. I know there are cheaper $2/dim sum places out there, but I like not feeling super rushed and in a cramped space for dim sum. It's worth coming here for dim sum for sure. =)
I had the all you can eat hotpot at HKYK for dinner twice in the last 2 months, and each time was a similar experience. I have no complaints about food quality, it was pretty good, although of a similar quality to other hotpot restaurants on alexandra road. Selection is quite large though, more than most hotpot places I have tried.
The main problem I have with HKYK is its consistently slow service. Both times I was there, every order took at least 30 minutes for the food to arrive. Since there is a time limit (like at most hotpot places), the most I can order is 3 times. Also my third order always gets cut off, as in they have no problem giving me exactly what i want in the first two orders, but my last order they decide not to give me 1/2 the stuff I ordered. They also have all you can drink pop or plum juice for just a dollar (or two?) more per person. This is not as great as it sounds, since they almost never come around to refill the drinks. I was not full when they gave me the bill, because the food came so slowly.
Lastly, both times I was there, my bill was incorrect, which seems tough to do since its a set price per person and the price of drinks. It was changed quickly when mentioned, this was the only fast part of their service.
The service ruins it for me, and I will not return. I gave them two chances, as service is sometimes a hit or miss in restaurants. To take 30-40 minutes to put raw food on a plate is too long.
I came here for AYCE Hot Pot sometime last year. My friend and I ordered lots of food such as oysters but limited to 2 per person. The oysters were the huge type and it was not cleaned properly so it got some grits when we ate it, even after boiling it in the hot pot. The service here was awful, I understand that it was crowded but the servers were rude and annoyed at us when we asked the servers to repeat the order. I will never come back again for Hot Pot here, I mean there are lots of Hot Pot places in Richmind that's much better than here, just go to alexandra road or street that's a minute away by driving.
After some OK dim sum that came to $31.10, we left $35 and gave the waitress our parking slip for validation. The waitress started berating us for "not leaving a 10% tip" (arithmetic alert: $3.90 is 12%). We kept trying to explain that we didn't want any change back from the $35, but all that did was make them louder. At some point, we just left, and heard them talking overly loud, dissing us in Mandarin (they thought we didn't understand them - hah) but obviously just wanting to humiliate us in front of other patrons.
Aside from their staff being unclear on the concept that tips are *earned*, ...
This was the second time we'd been there. The first time, we ordered the deluxe hot pot and some dim sum for lunch, and so it took us about 1.5 hours to work our way through it. Just after the 1-hour mark, they started vacuuming in an adjoining section. At first, we thought it was to clean up after a family with little kids, but then we realized they were jumping the gun with their afternoon cleaning. Pretty shabby, considering two of us had just dropped about $60 there.
Needless to say, we won't be returning. Ever.
I have been to so many restaurants but this is by far the WORST place I have ever been to. The food came up very slow, my friends waited forever for their rice thingy... (idk what they ordered) Price was ok but not worth the food. We had to add extra money for the soup. What really pissed me off was at the end when I was paying the bill for 7 ppl, around 140ish bucks, the waitress basically forced me to pay $15 and put the number in for me (I was paying with debit card). Sabo is definitely a so much better place. Going to this hot pot place was the worst decision I ever made.
H.K.Y.K. hot pot has been in business for a long time, perhaps even before Richmond really "exploded. They have a good selection of meats and fish balls, and also of veggies. I went there recently with a group of friends, and service was fairly quick, although, I might note, that when ordering in a large group, order multiples of the foods and make sure your first order is fairly large to carry you through. The restaurant likes to serve the vegetables first (to fill you up) and also (ahem) lose a couple off the last bill. Dessert and drinks are extra.
we were seated around 12:30 pm on Sunday after waiting by the door for several minutes. Had to sit at the back of the restaurant as the main area was fairly full. Waited 10 - 15 mins without service as the servers just kept walking by without giving us any eye contact. Finally I had to flag someone down to take our order. They don't have carts here but you fill in a list of what you want. The steamed beef ribs, shrimp dumplings, pork siu miu were pretty good but the steamed radish cake and deep fried pork ball weren't as good as some other dim sum places. There are other closeby restaurants that provide better/faster service and food..
We go to HKYK so much that the hostess recognizes us and makes small talk. We've been there for dim sum, late night dim sum, and hot pot.
The dim sum at HKYK is pretty standard fare, and you can expect good but not top-notch quality. They also have all day dim sum, so we often go in the evening after work. Not everything on the menu is available outside of regular dim sum hours, but you can still get all of the main items (hargow, siu mai, etc). It should also be noted that HKYK makes pretty great congee. We brought some friends once and tried the beef congee. It was cheap and they loved it.
HKYK has AYCE hot pot in the evenings (maybe weekends only?). It is a good bet for hot pot as it has fairly fresh ingredients, and a pretty big selection. We love their shrimp balls and deep fried bean curd skins. Their satay soup base is also delicious.
Service is usually decent, but not exceptional. If you mind waiting for your food, try going a bit earlier or later (not 7pm on a Sat). They do take reservations but you may still have to wait a bit at the door. Due to the size of the place and number of tables, the servers sometimes forget about your request because they're usually bombarded with requests as they walk around. It hasn't been a huge issue for us. We've just gotten used to asking several different people to make sure it gets through.
The thing that keeps us coming back is the convenience. Because the restaurant is so large, it's easy to get seated even on busy weekends without too much wait. Being able to go for dim sum at any time (not just before 3pm) is also great. Overall it's definitely worth a try and is one of our favorite places in Richmond.
Was invited by aunt and uncle to attend dinner here with them. There were 2 tables of people. and the restaurant had no trouble accomodating . Hot pot table was very clean and soup flavours were best. All ingredients to go in were of excellent quality. I enjoyed this dinner. Have been to the other "all you can eat" hot pot guys in Richmond. They are not as good as this.
Ah, nothing better than having hotpot with family on a cold November night, right? I couldn't be more wrong.
Food:
Food was edible. That doesn't mean all of it tasted incredible.
Rare beef- It was okay. Can't really screw this up. It tasted fine after cooking it.
Buns- Chewy and tough.
Fried rice- Way overdone. Super sticky--almost equivalent to glutenous rice. Also had a sick super greasy flavour.
Hor Fan- The flat rice noodles tasted fine. But underneath the dish there was a jumble of ground up raw shrimp. Appetizing, isn't it? (Sarcasm)
Assorted veggies- Tasted burnt. Don't know how. Even things that came out of pot after the veggies didn't taste burnt. An ever undulating mystery.
Dessert- Nothing extremely special about the desserts. They didn't taste fresh.
Service:
If you're looking for terrible service, look no further. People rarely came by to check up on us. Our teapot was always empty. We were missing 2 plates and a seat. Hah, my father had to track down a waiter to get us another chair and 2 more plates. Oh gosh, we sat there for almost 3 hours for 2 plates of rare beef, 4 dishes of assorted seafoods, 6 baskets of veggies, and then a bombardment of desserts.
Value:
I didn't pay for it but from what I can tell, people shouldn't be paying for bad food with bad service.
Ambiance:
The restaurant looked pretty good on the outside. But as the saying goes, don't judge a book by it's cover.
The chairs, floor, and walls were desperately screaming, "Replace me!"
The carpet was faded, the chairs and wooden panels were chipped, and the wall paper was tanned and partially peeled.
The lighting wasn't bad. It was nice and luminous.
I had a headache which worsened as I the dinner progressed. It subsided after I stepped out.
If you're going for hotpot, look elsewhere. There's probably better restaurants down No. 3 road towards Richmond Centre.
i went to this place on last week , and it was pack of peoples. then they told me i have to wait for 30min so i waitted. well, it ture out that i only have to wait for 15min. and the hot pot there very so good. i never had a hot pot as good as before. 1st time ever, the service there are so great ! even the boss came out and service peoples. they were so nice .!
We went to HKYK a couple of weeks ago and let's just say I got got a stomachache that night. The last time I was there was more than 5 years ago and it was decent, but this time with 3 other friends was very disturbing.
First of all, the table was sticky. Then we examined the tea cups and there were yellow and brown dried crusts from incomplete dishwashing on 2 cups, 1 spoon, and 2 bowls (which we asked to be exchanged). I should have taken this as the clue to leave, but being from Asia, where we are accustomed to rinsing out own dishes and cutlery before eating at any restaurant anyways, I shrugged to my friends and thought it was no big deal. I was wrong.
Where do I begin with the things that were wrong? I'll make it easier to read in list form:
-as the servers lifted and retrieved our finished plates, they let the wet drippings from the plates drip through the air onto our own plates
-i asked for a pencil to fill in my all-u-can-eat form and the server dropped a wooden pencil's sharpened lead end into my plate of uncooked beef balls, no apologies, did not even acknowledge anything out of the ordinary happened
-all-u-can-eat is NOT really all-u-can-eat as we ordered 10 plates of beef slices to share amongst the four of us and they only brought out four plates after much waiting and asking, when I kindly reminded the server that we had ordered 10 plates, his reply was "that's all that is available for now", but we ended up waiting so long that we left
-the men's bathroom had no handsoap, I had to go to women's bathroom to get soap and pass it outside to my guy friend waiting in the hallway
-the fish we ordered was slimy and tasted like it has been dead for a loooong time
-there was a curly short hair in my chili sauce for dipping
-there were massive spider webs decorating the tops of our window sills
Bottom line is this restaurant needs to clean up, did not serve fresh food, and they need to retrain all the staff on food safe.
It's a Good Friday night, and all other place was packed except for this place, with a couple of empty tables. So me and my friends thought about giving it a try. Shouldn't be too bad right?
Guess again.
We sat down right beside where all the clean dishes were. First thing we saw was green onion and other scrubs on all the bowls and spoons. Took 10 mins to flag down someone to replace. Female waitresses, except for the manager ( i think ? ) is always looking pissed off. Throw the food on the table and stormed away. On average takes 10 - 15 mins to flag down anyone.
Food was acceptable, vegetables aren't the freshest you can find, but well, it's all you can eat hotpot, can't expect too much. However, with the same price and all, there are other places for better food and MUCH better service for hotpots. Yeah no wonder this place isn't packed on Good Friday. And I will never go there for hotpot again.
I have tried HKYK before, and it now seems to be going downhill, it's a shame. I didn't have problems with them before until today.
From the beginning, the hostess never greeted us properly, never made eye contact, and didn't care who came in the door first. She just handed numbers to people whoever was pushing their way through, and I was clearly there before the crowd of people who rushed through.
I had a party of five, the dim sum ordering is through the pencil and paper method. After 30 minutes of trying to flag someone down to take our order, we had to take our own order to the cashier!
We spent 3 hours waiting for 12 plates of dim sum, I have never waited so long in my life for dim sum. The food was cold, dry, and full of msg. The only thing was they kept refilling our tea, but we found out later they CHARGE for tea. haha, what a joke. We asked for hot sauce 4 times, but it never came. The other patrons around us also waited just as long as we did, we all kept staring at one another to see if our food came!
In the end, we had to chase the waitress down for our bill, and they charged us extra for something that never came. This is the first time in my life I didn't leave a TIP!! Horrible food, horrible service, do not eat at this place, you would be lucky if your food came in less than 3 hours!!!
Went dimsum with family on a tuesday afternoon. The service was so horrible that our family laughed at how it got progressively worse (except my mom; she did not find it funny at all -_-)
-We were served 1 dish after being seated for about 45 minutes.
-Half of our utensils were dirty and we had to exchange it ourselves.
-We had to go refill our own teapots
-The second dish arrived at about the 60 minute mark after being seated.
-Last dish was never served, we cancelled it after waiting an additional 30 mins
The bill came to $29 and we put down $30 cash and walked out (generous tip for the "service", i think). The manager actually had the gall to run after us in the parking lot to inform us that tip was not included on the bill! HAHA We just laughed and told her about her wonderful service. She looked confused and waited for us to give her a tip. At this point we gave up and just laughed and walked away.
WELL, I stuff myself just a couple of nights ago and now you'll hear about it.
(all I can eat...but not as much as you think OK!!.) Guess what. everytime..EVERYTIME, I enter these Hotpot phase....I come home with the worst stomach bug. Overall, To sum it up..that Night I ended up in my washroom with some pains..-if you know what I mean...keke~..yuck..
So yummy until the after effect..!!.and I always tell myself there's no next time for what I had to go through!...but yet..cant help it.
Know any other hotpots place recommends?...that doesnt come with the toilet trips?!!
This is convieniently located between Parker Place and Aberdeen Centre. I like going to eat dim sum here after two pm. because it tends to be much more quiter, and you can enjoy your social meal with ease, and not have to feel the occasional rush of adreniline, that you get off the noisy buzz from conversations of other parties. I personally love the duck toungues in oyster sauce, as it tastes very good and as is tenderness. However, I have not been here for their hot pot in a very long time, so I do not know if it has improved. The service is great during the quiet times, or else don't bother, because it is much harder to get a waiter/waitresses attention during the afternoon tea-time hours; usually around 12. To conclude I will be returning soon.
