Hanami is a Japanese quick serve take-away restaurant in YVR. It is located on level 3 in U.S. departures
and level 3 in International departures.
Mrs. C and I were flying to LA for some shopping and stargazing when we spotted this place beside the Timmy Ho's in the departure area. The thought of shelling out 8 bucks for 1/2 a sandwich on the plane filled me with righteous indignation. Plus I was hungry.
The place was reasonably clean and there seemed to be lots of people buying food there, so we decided to see what was available. The price was higher than normal, but we were at the airport. We looked at the giant pictures of tasty food behind the serving area and decided on a bento box for me and a udon for my beloved travel companion. Service was fine and the staff seemed to enjoy their work.
I am sorry to say the bento was nothing like the picture. The gyoza were small and hard, the sushi was stale, the salad was wilted and the chicken teriyaki had seen better days. The udon was too salty and Mrs. C did not finish it.
I wouldn't have thought it possible that any restaurant could make airplane food look good. Now I know.
It's hard to say why some people love to trash good places but the first review of this restaurant is way out of line.We have eaten at Hanami at least a dozen times and have never been disappointed. In fact, we always schedule extra time when passing through YVR so that we can make a visit. With the exception of the dim sum restaurant at the Hong Kong airport, I can't think of better airport food anywhere.
