Chinese Restaurant offering push car dimsum and traditional dinner offerings in the evening.
Been here many times. The place is high-class looking, high regal ceilings and the staff
are well-dressed. Mannerisms of some of them belong to a lower class of restaurant, herding
guests as if they were sheep. The test-pieces of har gow and hôh-fun are good, their cold dishes are
spectacular, as are their char-siew pãos. Place is not too loud as their are curtains to muffle the din usually
found in Cantonese restaurants..."Din" Sum so to speak. Recommendable place, looks smart and elegant, good food, and parking not to difficult, washrooms are clean.
Went for a set dinner. Good cold plate, OK sharkfin soup, OK stir fry, good prawns, good chicken, good abalone, bad rice noodle and dessert. I think you can tell good food by the last few dishes. Seemed like it was an afterthought. Not too busy on a weeknight.
Overall, just OK.
Food: not bad but I've definitely had better. The hargow and sui mai were typical. They have this veggie tofu wrap thing that I really liked but everything else was just ok. The egg tarts were small and too flaky and the red sticky green bean dessert ball covered in coconut were a little bland as well. I think I'd rather stick to my other dim sum joints.
Service: We came a little late for the dim sum hour so the push carts were pretty much done but we were able to order from the waitresses. Sui mai was so late I didn't think it was even going to arrive but came just before we asked for the bill. They were prompt with the tea but there was also a moment where a casually dressed man came and just started checking out our tea and water pots. We didn't know if he worked there or was just a crazy man! Turns out he worked there but it was still quite odd. Not english friendly.
Ambiance: Spacious and clean. I was quite surprised at how large this place really was.
Overall: My chinese skills are quite poor and their english skills are just about the same and the food isn't great so I wouldn't return. There are just so many other dim sum places in Richmond to try!
Food: all the traditional dimsum dishes are offered via push cart. no dish really stood out as "exceptional"...more average than anything. would like to try this unique dish that's deep fried chicken wing stuffed w/ sticky rice. glutinous balls w/ red bean inside was good. egg tart a little too "flaky" for our liking. the lotus leaf fried rice is a favourite of ours as is the hot ginger milk.
Service: not bad for a dimsum joint. it's usually staffed appropriately. the boss lady is around and about greeting her regulars and is quite friendly.
Ambiance: busy, noisy, loud...the way we like it! fairly clean too.
Overall: wouldnt mind returning to try other dishes. if i had a dimsum craving this place would satisfy it.
Food: Your standard dimsum. Nothing special though...we ordered the usual stuff..siumai, haigao, etc.
Service: Decent. There were only one or two other tables there at that time.
Value: Decent, average, dimsum pricing.
Ambiance: Loud, annoying television that replays chinese music videos. Kind of annoying.
I won't be back, it wasn't memorable.
I came here for dinner w/my family on Tuesday and had a pretty good experience at Gala Seafood Restaurant.
The food: Some of the dishes were pretty forgettable (the fish maw soup...fried prawns with walnuts..) but I really really REALLY enjoyed the lobster with noodles. The lobster was tender, tasty and perfectly cooked. YUM! I also really enjoyed their peking duck wraps. The part I enjoyed the most about the peking duck was that they carved part of it at our table (being chinese and having eaten at countless number of restaurants..this is the first time I've seen this kind of service).
The service: our waiter (possibly a manager?) was very attentive. Overall, I think we got superior service than normal because the restaurant was so quiet (b/c of the weather - being snowy and all).
The value: average for chinese restaurants in the lower mainland.
The ambiance: really nice. I especially liked the HUGE chandelier we sat under.
I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves lobster!
Went to dinner wtih family because of the $8.99/pound lobster special. The lobster was ok except it's a bit too salty, and in order to get the special price, you need to pay additional $8 to add noodle to serve with the lobster. We ordered 3 other dishes - chicken (no taste), sweet & sour pork (too much sauce), and a veggie (ok). At the time we paid the bill, the waitress told us that their visa machine was not working so we could only pay by cash! I wish they would have put a sign at the door because for a $90 bill, you couldn't expect people to pay cash! There is no bank in the plaza but luckily we had enough cash! Given the food quality and poor service I would not recommend anyone to go!
There is definitely better dim sum out there, but this place never disappoints me. You won't find better value for the quality and selection. There are fewer choices to choose from now that they got rid of the trolleys, but consequently the food is fresher. My favorites include steamed rice rolls filled with fish, sui mai, shrimp spring rolls, and fried shrimp dumplings. The servers are also really sweet after getting to know them. I will definitely continue to come back to Gala Seafood on casual occasions or when I don't feel like paying the higher prices at Kirin or Victoria Garden.
Mercurial. That's the first word that pops into my mind when I think of this restaurant. In a pinch, when I'm up here visiting, which is often, if I need to treat family and relatives to a big dinner, I've been able to book a table or two and order up acceptable dinner at am acceptable price. But I've had both good and bad food; more often mediocre. I'm not sure if the variability is due to change in management or just staff. But I vaguely feel like this restaurant had a different name a number of years back. Still, the ambiance is nicer in that the tables are usually spread out more, and the service has always been professional and prompt.
Cleanliness all around makes a meal more appetizing. Everything was very clean, the seafood dim sum dishes tasted fresh and yet the selection was ho-hum. No real surprises or "I've got to try that" enthusiasm came from our table of four.
The service was prompt and friendly enough - my friend happens to know the boss.
The bill wasn't a big surprise like some dim sum places.
I would come here again even though I like more variety in my dim sum choices.
