The Flying Beaver Bar & Grill is located at the south end of the Number Two Road Bridge in Richmond. Offers a wide selection of micro brews and pub fare with a patio open in the summer.
This pub has one of the greatest patios in the area. You sit and watch the float planes take-off and land on the water. Friendly staff and very good food. The nightly dinner special is great value. We went on a Thursday evening and the special was steak and prawns for $11.99.
If you have out-of-town visitors this is definately a great place to take them as it is different -- very west coast.
The Beaver Tail potato skins are a great appy to start your evening off.
We go to the south terminal often, which is right across from the Flying Beaver. The last time we were there a couple of years ago was a bad experience so we hadn't been frequenting it.
However, we were at the main airport and were going to the south terminal and had 1 1/2 hours to kill. We thought we would give this place another chance as it is close and does have a wonderful view.
From the moment we walked in, we did not get a good impression. The music was to loud to talk comfortably. The place needed a good clean. The tables were dirty.
We selected a table but their was a note saying something like "you can sit here, but if people we like stop by you will be asked to move". Why not put a reserved sign on it? We moved on, found another table and sat down. The waitress did come over promptly to get our drink order When I only wanted water, her attitude was disdainful. However, I got the water when the others got their drinks.
We had decided to order the wings special. Oh boy, the rules. First we each had to have a real drink, water was not acceptable. OK, I ordered a beer and gave it to my husband. My husband ordered 12 hot wings, which was ok. But my Grandmother and I each ordered 6. Not acceptable, the minimum was 10. Again, ok, we ordered 10 each. They came covered in goop and were not very good. We each ate a couple but couldn't continue as the sauce was overpowering. We did eat the decent yam fries.
Up until this point we took the rules in stride. But when we asked the waitress to wrap the wings up so we could take them home, she informs us we can only take a maximum of 7 wings with us. When I explained we could not eat them all and didn't want to order that many anyways, she said "I explained you had to order 10". Yes, she did, but she did not explain we would have to eat the all of them. She informed us she would pack up 7 and throw the extras away, or we could eat them. At this point I snapped "Who makes these ridiculous *)(*& rules?". She stomped off and refused to come back.
So I asked to speak to the manager. He eventually came over and started chewing me out for swearing at the waitress. I apologized and tried to explain our situation, and that all I wanted was to take the leftovers home but he just kept explaining the rules to us over and over. Finally I said there is no point in continuing this conversation, could we please have our bill so we could leave. He then continued to talk, but he became angry because I cut him off. He just wouldn't go away.
It's ridiculous really, we are good customers, pleasant, take situations as they occur and tip well. All we ask is that we get treated fairly and with respect. I understand they need to have rules surrounding their specials, but come on, don't make me order more food than I want then tell me I either have to eat them or throw them out, but still have to pay for them.
Well, the best way to vote is by not bothering to go back and you can be sure that is what we will do.
When we first got there, our waitress was just taking something out to a diner on the patio, so we followed her in. Already I was kind of put off by the look of the place - more like someone's house. The place looked like it had not seen a good clean in quite some time. But, I felt I would let it slide because I was rendezvousing with a beautiful lady friend. Maybe they were going for a really old pub look? I don't know. We were told we could sit anywhere we liked (there had to be maybe two other patrons there) so I decided to go for the booth right beside the windows with the view. When I sat down, it was quite uncomfortable. Not somewhere I would want to be sitting for any expensive period of time. As well, it was absolutely freezing in there. It has been getting pretty cool the last few weeks and I would think that like most restaurants at least the good ones which I go to would adjust their thermostat. erm ,no. Once again, I will let this slide. Before the waitress leaves, she takes our drink order (wine list is limited go for brew) and will take my girlfriend's when she gets back from the washroom. Sure enough, she did get both our drinks quite promptly. From there on, everything was OK and the place started to fill up and get warmer. Surprisngly, quite a few ladies came in and some were actually cute and fashionable. Thats what I call a pub.
My gf and I met up with a friend here to catch the Canucks game. It was pretty packed but luckily our friend arrived first and snagged a seating facing a screen.
The menu has a few non-traditional pub items and tries to be a little outside of the box, perhaps with mixed results. Our friend who's been here before raved about the fish and chips, which I do agree looked good. My burger and fries was decent minus the rather small slice of cheese and the overly tangy grilled onions which, either intended or not for contrast did not bode well on my palette. My gf's ahi tuna salad was served up alongside with some shredded lettuce salad with some unripe mango cubes thrown in, taking up a good 3/4 of the plate. Our yam fries side was fraught with limp strands, but the peppered mayo was excellent. Our Caesar's were awfully bitter; I actually ordered it again to check if it was just a one-off...not.
Our server was on the ball considering the amount of patrons inside that night, so it's hard to fault on the small details.
There are lots of newer tvs around and the look really spoke to me but the food and drinks makes me second guess coming here again. It's also a bit out of the way unless you appreciate the planes in the background flying in and out while you're glued to the screen.
Not only is this bar the best place to hang out or take a visitor in the area, but the food and service are great. I have eaten nearly everything on the menu over the years and only had one thing I wasn't impressed with. The daily specials are excellent and the wings are solid, only wish they added some more flavors.
The food and beer prices are a solid value. They even have a "Frequent Beaver" program for regular customers. I find the staff there are great, from the servers and bartenders, to the porters and doormen - everyone is friendly and happy to help. It can get busy in there, at any time of the day because the place is so popular.
What can you say about the ambience? You are on the Fraser river and watching the seaplanes come in and out. It is great! One of the best places to relax with friends in the Greater Vancouver area.
We come here before/after paintballing at the indoor place in Richmond, and I always get the Bison Burger since I no longer can eat beef or pork (causes stomach problems). I've had alot of bison burgers from alot of pubs and restaurants since I stopped eating beef a few years ago. This is by far the best bison burger in Vancouver, it is juicy, the patty isnt a thin charcoiled dry quarter pounder look alike. The portions are generous, the patty is at least 6oz's cooked, the bun isnt anything to get excited about nor are the toppings except the guiness infused cheddar. My suggestion is to improve the bun for this burger, since it is so juicey the bun was falling apart after a couple of bites, but that might be my excited grip. everyone elses food is always delicious as well, except the halibut sandwich which is dry. The random specials they have are a great treat (4 dollar pints on sundays? after 5 cheap wings? sheesh) and the view of the water is fantastic. Service is decent, but we usually get sat at a small table for me (a 5'9" girl), usually my tall brother, dad, sister in law, and my random guy friends. and usually they dont have ketchup ready for our fries and they are terrible at upselling, but they are nice, they dont mess up what we order and they arent ugly and scowly.
Highly reccomend dropping in.
The Other Half had severe cabin fever after all the snow, so we headed to Richmond for lunch on Saturday. I had heard of this pub, it seemed a little different, and so we went searching for it.
I`ve lived in the Lower Mainland for decades, but have never been to the South Terminal of YVR. It seemed a bit of adventure to get there!
Very nice ambiance, right on the river. The Harbour Air seaplanes land and take off from just outside the windows. The room itself was comfortable and welcoming. Also refreshing that it wasn`t `ye olde Irish-Celtic` themed...
The menu said breakfast only until 10:45, but the server told us that they now extend the brunch menu until 1:00 pm on the weekends. The OH had the Biggie Breakfast with ham, sausage, bacon, two eggs toast and hash browns. He all but licked the plate, so I gather that it was very good indeed. I ordered `Bad Boys`bennie, also with ham, sausage, bacon, hollandaise sauce, two eggs and hash browns. It was very good, and very generous in the size of the serving. I couldn`t finish it.
Bathrooms were clean and tidy. The pub itself was well-kept and spotless. Empty plates cleared promptly, empty glasses refilled promptly by very friendly waitstaff.
I wish it was closer to home... still, I foresee a few more visits in the future. The summertime would be great for the outside deck seating.

Well. We've hardly missed a Sunday in *years*. Pat, the manager who tends bar, is an amicable guy. The staff are highly competent. The food is great for a pub.
But...
It all started last month. The food took a decidedly bad turn. We didn't finish some food once, and Pat bent over backwards giving us free stuff, didn't charge us for our meals, and apologized. We were astonished at how great they were about it.
Having been busy for the past few weeks, last nite was our first time back since. The servers are ALL different, and Pat, who's been a permanent icon there, wasn't behind the bar. Hmmm.... new management?
The service was beyond horrible.
Tables weren't served food in the sequence they ordered.
Asked for tabasco; 5 mins later, got it ourselves. 15 mins later, the girl comes by with some, and gives us a chilly glare.
We waited a 1/2 hour for beer.
We ordered 16 wings, got 10. When we pointed this out, we were told 'they're backed up in the kitchen, but 6 more are coming.' You can't make 16 together??? What's with that? But when our dinner was well over, and it was obviously time to go, we cancelled the other 6 wings. Sheesh. The girl never apologized, nothing. "Oh," she says. "You don't want the other 6 now."
But this is what clinched it: While complaining amongst ourselves about the bad service, the table next to ours asked for the manager and had a SLEW of complaints.
The manager (the new bartender) started to argue with them! The manager accused the lady of stirring up trouble, and ended the conversation with, "if you don't like us, you can take us to court." Wha!?!?
We were going to pipe up too, but then decided nah... it's not worth it. We'll vote with our feet. They have pub food and beer all over the place. No need to pay to feel unhappy, right?
We were at the Beaver the other night for a B-day party which coincided with 'name that tune night". I used to work out here and I remember the food at the beaver always being a notch above what you would expect from a pub, the calamari here used to be some of the best in town. I ordered the same thing and ended up with a soggy portion of tiny rings and a small mound of messy shredded lettuce as a "side salad" Wow what a change. Other people we were with ordered various dishes and NONE of them were really any good, the closest to being good was the salmon burger. On the plus side the ambiance of this place is great and the beer is cold and reasonably priced. Good place for a beer and a view but don't bother with the food..they even managed to fail at doing nachos! whoever is running this place should bring back the former chef!
Came here yesterday for my cousins 22nd birthday. The food was actually pretty good and I really did enjoy it (but didn't want to say that it was outstanding, thus I only gave it a 3, but deserves a little mroe than that)
Saturdays is really fun at the Beaver if you know your music. They have "Name that tune" night on Saturdays and they play the start of a song from the 50's until the 2000's and you are supposed to guess the name of the song and the artist (for those wishing to play of course) BUT BEWARE! The music is *LOUD* I would have enjoyed 'name that tune' more had I known my music, but eh! it was a fun night anyways and the food was great.
Service was average considering it was busy.
Came here with a friend for Nacho’s and beer. The nacho’s with “everything” was huge and the draft beers were smooth. Friday night and it’s packed to the rafters. Come here for some fun and be prepare for a shouting good time.
This used to be a favorite when I worked at the airport. Wing Wednesday's was something to look forward to.
The ambiance is fantastic with a great view of the floatplanes taking off right outside.
The service is good, but can be off sometimes when they are really busy...and trust me, this place gets packed!
Check it out, you won't be disappointed!
This out of way pub is hard to find unless you take Harbor Air planes a lot. The food is very average. Better food at the Buck and Ear in Steveston. Yes, the servers are nice but if I want to look and not eat, I wouldn't be at a food place. If you like watching planes, it is a nice place to go to especially when the open patio is opened.
Flying Beaver is located at the floatplanes terminal at the airport. The upside is the view. The downside is that its near nothing and there is usually a roadblock on the only road that leads in and out of it. Also, it pretty much dies down after midnight or 1am, since you cant really “drop by”.
However, it is a blast. It has really really good pub food at pub prices. Food and drink specials every day. Good looking servers. Always busy with good-looking crowd. Good breakfasts on the weekends. It is by far the best pub in Richmond! Done by the Mark James Group, same people that own Yaletown Brewery, Lotus Hotel, Dix, Mark’s Fiasco and others.
This restaurant is like a beach-house. There is a central age-restricted bar area, and screened-in patios on the outside. The patios are a bit cold and subject to lots of mosquitos, depending on the season. The bar is like any other bar I've seen in Richmond - very noisy with loud music - but this one is a bit more upbeat and energetic. Both times I was there, the bar patrons and staff were egging on drunk women to dance or do silly things for prizes. The food is decent pub-fare; a bit expensive. Too noisy for me.
Been to The Flying Beaver numerous times since moving here three months ago. The Black and Blue Burger is very good. The Butter Chicken is outstanding as is Spicy Pepper Jack Burger. Love the fries and the different mayo dips for the fries.
and we fly a lot so the location is great and watching the float planes land is always fun. The heated patio is wonderful.
If you need to go to the Airport to pick someone up (my girlfriend works for an airline discount for airline employees on Tuesdays) this is a great place to take a hungry guest. It is a great first impression of Vancouver.
The views are wonderful if you are on the enclosed patio- you can see the airport, mountains and the river with float planes coming and going.
The food is decent and the specials are usually a great deal. The appy platter is pretty good too.
We bring our child there (during the day) as they have a high chair and you can sit on the enclosed patio. Sometimes this place is crazy busy during the week with all the local flight crews. Get a flying beaver card if you intend to return and get a free meal after buying a few for friends!
I ventured here with my family once and got stopped at the doors because of the kids *laugh*. It was daytime, but still, minors were not allowed, we were told, but we managed to get ushered into a small spot where we could sit down and enjoy a cheery meal with the kids. It's obviously a favourite hangout for the local pilots and it's really cool to see planes out there. The view is marvellous indeed. The atmosphere was great. I saw on blackboard about fishing lessons being offered too. Quite a community gathering here.
Great bar, great view, and they have a pizza that they say they haven't been able to take off the menu. Try this chicken and roasted garlic creation and you will see why. Share this pizza with my buds...like hell! Staff all seem willing to help each other and are very friendly and knowledgeable. Say hi to John...he's their greeter and mascot.
Have been coming here since they opened in '95, all I can say is that the food is always good (remember this' a pub) service is strong (and cute) beer cold and great drink specials daily, and who doesn't like watching the sea planes take off and land. Never miss, where else will you always be satisfied.
