Restaurant is now called Enjoy Cafe.
E-Canteen was a Hong Kong Style Cafe serving up set meals and sizzling plates. Good prices, generous servings.
If you are looking for something quick, filling, and fairly cheap, e-canteen is your place. My friends always go by here for a bite after a study session. Apparence wise they look more or less like any other hk style cafe - same with their menu.
okay service with a occasional smile. Sometimes they gave me wrong orders. when i asked for sausages, they gave me ham... that's not the best part. the best part is the lady there grabbed my knife off the table and pulled the ham off the plate and ONTO the table.
I am not one who fusses over a dollar's difference charged on drinks but rather look at the overall value. Been to this place a few times over many years. The stairs are hard for some to climb up, parking is cramped. Service is so-so, and a bit slow, although you do get smiles, and they are not impatient to explain the menu. The selection is wide and excellent albeit a bit confusing to order if one's not used to it. The portions are fairly generous and the food, although a tad greasy, is tasty, ok, not haute couture but has a soul-food taste and preparation. Did not check into the cleanliness as other diners are more astute in this department. The place is a wee bit loud with little privacy, and being a typical Chinese type of restaurant, people rudely stare at you as you come in, but that's to be expected. I did once have a business meeting with 8 people in a private room inside. The drinks are a bit watered-down but the hot beverages are not tepid when served.
I am a regular of this restaurant for three major reasons:
1. Prices are very reasonable
2. Food is always above average compared to other similar restaurants
3. Convenient location with a large parking lot
On days when I have school in Richmond, I usually come here for a quick meal. Food is always served fast, prices are great for the portions you get, nothing fancy or pretentious, nice, easy and quick.
I do find certain dishes to be a bit on the oily side but as long as you try to order the healthier options, you are okay.
Food: I love the spaghetti bolognaise! The food portions are very good, and most meal options come with a drink. The drink selections are plentiful as well!
Service: A hit or miss. They can be really moody and impatient sometimes.
Value: Good, cheap eats!
Ambiance: Clean.
I will return!
Food: Right off the bat, we were served warm and bitter iced tea! Had to add an extra cup of water and ice just to make it drinkable and even then it was questionable. Hubby's seafood fried noodle was good but black pepper chicken fried noodle was terrible. It left a terrible after taste and was just drowned in a gunk of sauce. The only saving grace was the one dish and cheap prices.
Service: Typical chinese hk cafe style where they seat you, take your order and bring you food and nothing more and nothing less.
Ambiance: Used to be much nicer but is now too bright and looked dirty. People need to clean the mirrors on the wall and clean up the dirty dish bucket.
Overall: Will probably not return since there are just so many hk cafes in Richmond to choose from.
I went to e-Canteen on my day off yesterday and was glad to find another good-pick for a fast n' cheap lunch. I'm always fond of HK-style cafes, not because of their great food, but because you get plenty selection at a very low price. You get a good hot meal for a little-bit more than what you would pay for a McDonald's meal. With about 100 meal choices, it's hard to get tiresome of lunch.
The food is solid, however, I was a little off'ed by my slimey curry spaghetti, but paying under $6 for a nice piece of breaded sole over curry spaghetti and a glass of iced milk tea? How can you feel like you've overpaid? The 3 (plus a child) of us ate for a little over $20 with leftovers.
Service was better than what you would find in a HK cafe in East Van or Burnaby. And I was told they just recently renovated.
It was nice and spacious and I'd like to return soon to try some other menu options.
I went to EC and I kept thinking "didn't this used to be I-café?" I can’t remember, but I think so. The place was once very modern looking with orange checker-plate steel floor, dark carpet and matching booths. Now is it just dirty and run down.
If you can get past the décor, the service was pretty good, and the menu had lots of choices. I had the curry chicken, borscht, and dong café. The curry was smooth and flavourful, with lots of coconut/curry power. The borscht was less exciting, and had no meat in it. The iced coffee was better than average.
Overall, the ambience at I-café is better, but E-canteen beats them on food.
Recommended, despite the need for clean-up…
if you like typical HK fare. Their mix-and-match menu is a pretty good deal. Some dishes are hit & miss: beef fried rice noodle is sort of bland, as is their cod in corn sauce.
Service is good if you sit in the large dining area; sitting in private rooms means being forgotten.
The interior is nice... booths are comfortable. Some tables have chairs that are very hard & uncomfortable. Big bar is nice. Spacious, tables not too close together.
Worth a try...
This is a place that I used to visit regularly - mostly because of its great value (low prices). Unfortunately, 1 terrible experience has me blacklisting the place. We were seated at a small table squished up between the tables by the cushions (near the window) and the tables in the middle. Not a great table location, but they were pretty busy, so it was understandable. However, one of the tables (same size as our table) by the window opened up. We asked one of the staff members (looked like it might have been an owner) if we could move over to the window seat (we hadn't ordered yet). He said "no" because they were going to move that table over to the one next to it to create space for a party of 4 (that's understandable too). So we wait for a bit, and no party of 4 showed up. Instead, they fill the table with a party of 1! So this time we asked a different staff member if we could switch tables, and she lets us. But throughout the whole meal the staff member who wouldn't let us switch tables kept on glaring at us. We also heard him ask the waitress if we were the same people who asked to move earlier (I don't know why that should matter to him!). Very uncomfortable experience.
It's quite a shame, because they give you pretty good value here. The food is okay, though the drinks seem a little watered down and bitter.
Oh yeah, and it always takes forever to get the bill.
If your'e looking for something really quick, filling, and fairly cheap, e-canteen is your place. My friends always go by here for a bite after a study session. Apparence wise they look more or less like any other hk style cafe - same with their menu.
Perk is, any food item on their menu, comes with a free drink. My favourite is their baked seafood rice. You get a lot of seafood and portions are big enough to share.
Dropped by here last nite for first time. This place has been in my hood but I frequented the other HK Style restaurants. I must say that this one probably tasted the best with more than ample sized proportions. Food tastes great, service was good and the venue is fair for quick feed. Had Minced Beef/parsley Mei Fun Soup. Black Bean Chicken Rice Noodle and Lobster macaroni. All were tasty and not greasy. This venue will probably be the new HKS restaurant for me. Fair prices here as well.
Great for a carefree lunchtime with friends. Their selection menu is very good and has a good variety although similar to other places. However, I find that their option of salmon very appealing and it is extremely tasty. They also do not get grumpy if you ask for separate bills (even when we did it with 15+ people).
Make a customer happy and he'll tell his friends...make a customer angry and he'll tell everyone. The people who work here have no idea about this age old customer service adage. Got served rubbish food. Which I guess is somewhat pardonable for the price. Oily, greasy, cold, undercooked meat, and tasteless. Furthermore, went up to the counter to pay the bill and was kept waiting for 10 minutes. Employees kept saying 'wait' or 'two minutes' over and over again. This place is run by people who have no respect for customers and lack basic common sense. They need to learn basic etiquette which I guess they were never taught....Why so much venom, you might ask? So since the food was bad, the service terrible and treatment during check out so bad, I did not leave a tip. This resulted in unacceptable behaviour being displayed by two women who work at the front desk it seems. As I left and looked back, they made nasty faces at us and said demeaning things while pointing at us. And called us 'cheap' loud and clear pointing at us. These people need to understand the basic concept that if you provide reasonable service, obviously you will be tipped at 15 pc. But if it is extraordinary, you get tipped more. But what now, they lost not just us as customers forever but all of our friends and family. This is how businesses collapse. Learn some common sense and basic etiquette and have a brain larger than the size of a pea before you start working! Avoid this 'restaurant' if you respect your self esteem.
The food in this restaurant was quite decent. Im a big guy and I eat a lot! It was enough to satisfy me. The price was average and the design is average is quite unique. It's on the second level and they have provided an elevator in which i thank for.
Although the restaurant had nice standards, the waiters were horrible. My friends and i went there and had a great time. Until the time came for the bill. We accidentally gave a tad less for tips and the waitress shouted at us like we were criminals or something.
First of all, tips is not mandatory. This means that it is optional. They don't understand that. They asked us like it was expected. That was horrible. It never should have happened, but it did. I don't blame the restaurant for having poor attitude waitresses but over the several times i have seen her around so therefore, something must be done.
I would recommend going to this restaurant because of the decent value/ food and the unique design.
I went there with my family on a friend's recommendation and we were very disappointed. while the portions weren't small, i wouldn't say that they were generous either, just very average. My sister and I had the curry chicken/beef and the meat was very tasteless and bland, especially the chicken. the ambiance isn't very comfortable either, not a place that i'll like to linger around in.
Went there a few times with my boyfriend to try their food. Had sizzling plates and the portions were bigger than i thought compared to other cafes and the other dishes from the menu was really tasty =) The food really fast and their service was quick. The tables are not as comfortable as the booth seats but the food makes up for it! Definitly will go there again!!!
it is a outstanding HK cafe in richmond. i m here all the time with my family or friends. the food is better to its right (alleluia)~! the price is better than its left (kingspark)~! overall is better than both left n right!!! lots of food to choose from. u wont get bored thinking what to eat. friendly service. lots of parking spots. top 5 hk cafe in richmond.
If you ever want to visit this place, go for their combos on the first page of the menu. Not sayig that other plates are bad, but their combos come with great values. A regular plate would be around $7, with drinks. (Their milkteas/iceteas are ok). As for combos, you get to choose 1-3 items for maincourse, ranging from $7-$9, which also comes with soups and drinks. (their creamsoup is alot better than the other whatever soup.)
However, this place gets really crowded after 1pm, so if you really want to make a visit, go a little early at like 12 or something.
I come here on occasion because my friend brings me here. I do admit that this place provides outstanding value for its food. Regarding food the food here is not ok though it is not the best of quality. It makes you feel like you are in a cheap buffet or cheap all you can eat restaurant. The service here is quite slow as I had to wait 25 min for my food and a very long time for my drink. I asked 4 times for water and they kept saying wait a moment and I eventually got it. yikes!! I requsted medium rare on my steak grill and I got something well done. I complained and the service staff responds by saying thats the way its supposed to be. WTF? The ambiance however, is quite decent with nice lighting and tables but I would not return here unless all my friends requested so.
I went here with a bunch of friends a few weeks ago for dinner. The atmosphere was nice, however the service was annoying. What I mean by that is, my friend was trying to order a set meal, where you can mix and match by choosing from beef, chicken, pork or fish,m then choose your sauce and your soup. My friend ask for suggestions about which mix is the best, the waitress seemed impatient and said the fish is the best. My friend thought about it for a few seconds and wanted to pick another choice. Suddenly she just grabbed his menu and told him to just stick with the fish cause he was taking too long to decide. What is up with that? What kind of service is that?
