The Diplomat Bakery has a new location on London Road at the end of No. 2 Road. They moved out of their previous location on Moncton Street since late 2007 but their great cakes and pastries remain. Excellent value as individual servings range from as low as $3. Whole cakes available as well.
This delicious bakery is located near Steveston. Yummy smells waft from the bakery even before you step inside. They offer an assortment of cakes as well as slices. My favorite cake here is the hazelnut cake, I don't eat the bottom biscuit layer but the rest of the cake is amazing, with bits of hazelnut crunch, layers of cake and hazlenut mousse topped with chocolate. Their white chocolate mousse cakes are also very good, often white chocolate mousse doesn't really taste like white chocolate but here it does. While their chocolate cakes are good, they are not my cup of tea as I prefer denser dark chocolate cakes. Will return to try some of their other cakes. They also bake breads.
If you don't mind going out of your way for a treat then Diplomat is for you. Bought 4 slices of cake get 1 free plus 2 eclairs, 2 cream puffs and 2 rum balls. Bill was just under $30.00. Expensive? Yes. Worth the effort just for pastry? No. Very nice pasties and good service with knowledgeable staff. Super bright and clean environment.
I came across this place when I was driving down Dyke Road one day. I looked for it before but didn't know they moved so suffice to say I was glad I stumbled upon this little gem.
Although the location seems remote for the time being as the area is being redeveloped, it's a stone's throw away from the core of Steveston, and is a calming place to spend a sunny day.
The window displays draw your attention, and I've had several cakes and cookies because of it. The Tiramisu is a delightful piece of heaven. It's light, with strong undertones of coffee/expresso and a perfect sponginess with the soaked ladyfingers. It's also noticably taller than other tiramisus I've had - height equivalent of their other cakes. Their Blueberry Cream Cheese layer cake is a nice balance of light and richness. The cheesecake layers are mixed with layers of sponge cake - a great combination. The European Cheesecake is a lighter version while the Espresso Chocolate Fudge Cake was the complete opposite: dark, dense, and rich with chocolate. Portions are big enough to bring back home and prices are very good.
There are several small tables and chairs to enjoy them with. The servers there are friendly, but a bit too casual. On my last visit I clearly stood in line to order yet was bypassed by other customers. Although the other customers barged their way past me it was noticeable I was waiting to be helped, however an isolated incident.
Worth a trip..or more.
This place is a gem. I love to come here. It's like a treat.
Food: The baked goods are so good. It's delicious. The cakes are amazing. I like the pastry that looks like an eclair, it also has cream in it. It's probably called eclair, I can't remember. I haven't had anything that I don't like at Diplomat. I just can't find a thing to complain about. I am going to try some bread in the future.
Service: I think they are very nice. Sometimes I hesitate what I want to get but they are very patient with me. Love them!
Value: The items are not cheap but they are so worth it if you want to get it right. Sure you can get a cheaper tiramisu cake somewhere else but it will not taste as good as diplomat, it won't even be close. I always find myself coming back to Diplomat for something that's made right and perfectly.
Ambiance: It has moved to this location for a while now, 1 year or 2 years? I can't remember. This location is so much nicer than their old location. It's in a new building, nice parking space and a lot more seats for customers. You can also sit outside. The store looks cute and clean. I like it a lot.
I used to hear people say nice things about Diplomat. I was skeptical. Now I am a true believer.
Ordered a cake for my son's birthday (which is hectic enough) only to arrive at the Diplomat and be told that they have no record. When I asked how they'd make this right the reply was that "Chef" wouldn't be making it right as there's no proof that I actually placed the order. Nice. Yes, I guess I'm one of those scamming people who go looking for 9" cakes hoping for discounts on the day of a party. After a number of cakes that we've ordered from the Diplomat, this was our last. Good cake but if you can't count on them, why bother? And the lack of respect as a customer was terrible. Thanks for nothing 'Chef'!
We had this cake and eat it every meal until it was gone. When the fork slide through the cake and hit the kahula layer, the liquid mildly leaked down the fluffy cake too. Great flavour, no skimping on ingredients or care.
It was our first experience and we will be back. I'll review our next purchase as well. :-)
It's in a coffee shop in an obscure, weird, location. What can I say?
BUT - it's got decent cakes. 5 slices for the price of 4... and their Hazelnut Cream is simply outstanding. It's a coffee shop - so there isn't much ambiance - but if you go there, you're going for the cake anyway, you're not going there to show off. Cheesecake wasn't that good though - regular flour-cakes were great.
Definitely will be back. These cakes are just a shade below Ganache - but they are outstanding nonetheless and hold their own value.
Was looking for a good bakery shop for a birthday cake for my brother, and this one was highly recommended. Although the location isn't the best, I have to say their cakes are among one of the best I have ever had.
We bought a whole dark chocolate mousse cake for my brother, and four slices of various different cakes to try. All four slices were wonderful, particularly the hazelnut one which was just right - not too sweet, with the perfect texture.
My brother was so pleased with the cake that he said it was the best dark chocolate mousse cake he has ever had. It was such great value as well, the five of us each had two slices of the cake and it was only $27. This is now my new favorite bakery!
I always come here when I want to treat myself or if I just want to sit down with a friend and chat. It's just perfect. I loooooove their desserts. There are so many to choose from, that I always have trouble deciding. But you can never go wrong with chocolate and/or cheesecake! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants a simple yet delicious snack. It's a lot more worth it then going to a restaurant just to order dessert.
This place is awesome!
Whomever owns this bakery and bakes these cakes - they are fantastic. Fresh all the time, excellent selection and friendly service. Reasonably priced as well.
If you like teramisu, this is by far a superior slice of some of the best we've had. Only downside is that it quickly becomes habit forming....
I am a food enthusiast (or a foody, as my friends call me), especially when desserts are involved. I love this place. A great spot to get a scrumptious treat and a coffee or other beverage with friends. The only bakery that I have found where the food tastes like (or surpasses) my grandma's baking. So good.
although it is a small place with not many tables i really liked the feeling of it. it's a comfortable place to just sit eat and talk with friends.
there is a good selection of cake and they're all very good. i've tried the tiramisu and the blueberry cheesecake both of which i was very impressed with.
Diplomat bakery is still one of the best places in the Vancouver area to by high quality cakes, for any occasion. Having said that, I am a bit disappointed that the individual portion sizes have gone down in the last year.
Prices have been pretty stable though, so I guess they raised their margins by getting more pieces out of a cake. Prices for whole cakes have remained the same for a long time though, so you're getting the best deal buying whole cakes.
Here is my only real peeve: The tiramisu cake, long time my absolutely favorite and exeptionally good, is now cowered with some sugary fondant icing which really messes with the great flavour of the cake below. I've actually stopped eating the tiramisu now.
If they would go back to doing the Tiramisu cake the way they did before and not put that horrible icing on it, it would again be my favorite.
Service is a bit hit & miss, but pretty good most of the time. Only if you're there towards closing time the servers behind the counter really show they'd rather close shop now and get out instead of serving the last few starglers coming into the store.
