Deer Garden provides the ambience of a Hong Kong Style “Che Zai Mian” or “Car Noodles” eatery with a modern Taiwan décor Bubble Tea house.
This is a great place for cheap eats. It's a combo method where you pick the soup base, noodles, 2 kinds of meats and then a hot or cold drink, all for $7.50. Can't go wrong at this price. Tried the laksa which was pretty good along with the flat noodles with fish balls and beef tendons. Large portions and even comes standard with tofu and veggies inside. The place was very busy even after 9pm on a weeknight, a bit out of the way and hidden on the 2nd floor but obviously people know where it is. Service was quick and efficient and place is just OK to sit around but they sort of want the talbes to be turned. Will be back.
This review is meant for the newly opened Deer Garden in Continental Plaza (on Cambie Rd). Having tried the one on Alexandra with a good experience (but nothing special), I was excited about them having another location.
Upon arrival, not acknowledged for a few minutes (it was around 3pm so not really lunch rush either), then someone looks as us and points to a table without saying a word. I ordered the original fish soup and chose beef brisket and pork rinds as my two toppings, and my friend ordered the baked porkchop on rice. The baked porkchop was really bland, none of that nice tomato-ey taste with crispy pork, it was just very "blah". When I got my soup they had mixed something up because it had beef balls and beef tendon in there instead. After a while I got the server's attention and asked where the brisket and rinds was and she said it was in there then walked away. I was fairly certain that there wasn't any so I asked her again and she looked at the order sheet we had filled out and realized she had brought the wrong order. Moments later she brought out a separate bowl later packed with the original toppings (at least they don't skimp out on portions!). As I was consuming the broth I notice a weird larva-shaped thing in it, little larger than a grain of rice with a fat body, and sure enough it was some freaking maggot-type insect complete with the gross little legs!! Ugh I can't get that image out of my head. I immediately lost my appetite and I didn't want to make a scene again plus we were in a rush, so we immediately asked for the bill and got the heck out of there. I know not all Chinese restaurants can be perfectly clean and sanitary but this was my first time ever seeing an insect in my food. Don't think I will be returning anytime soon.
After dining there twice, I told my husband: "I think I will really miss their soup if I ever move away from Vancouver."
They have a pretty extensive menu including a variety of noodle soup and typical HK cafe dishes. They did increase the noodle soup price to $7.95 from $7.5 but it is still a good value. Both times we ordered their famous fish soups which were consistently good and filling. The hot drinks that came with the soups were very thin but oh well...
The service was OK and the environment was loud, given that the restaurant was not big and yet it was packed in addition to many people in queue.
They do not take reservation for three guests or fewer, which is a deterrent since we do not appreciate waiting 1+ hours for a bowl of soup. Nevertheless, we will go back when we are able to make a reservation for a bigger group of people.
Food: love the noodles here. really appreciate the fact they dont skimp out on the ingredients. i usually get the tom yum gong soup base, udon noodle, enoki mushroom, and seasonal veggies. sooo good! my b/f likes the original fish soup base. we've tried the dessert wings for an add'l $1.50 and they're pretty tasty as are the fish cakes. we'll get the hot HK style milk tea for free to go w/ our meal. we've also tried the baked fish w/ pesto and almonds was very good.
Service: typical of an chinese/taiwanese cafe. it's all about efficiency, they're not there to give you a mind blowing culinary experience.
Value: $7.50 for a hefty noodle + drink will get me full. $1.50 for sides is very reasonable.
Ambiance: brightly lit. can get noisy at times especially when it's full. typical cafe style setting.
Overall: i crave their noodles all the time! i could eat here more than 1X a wk easily! i think overall there is good value and good food. i dont mind the average service, it's to be expected. the only criticism is the parking situation in this area in general. it's always hard to find a place to park.
For a chinese restaurant, I thought this place was pretty outstanding.
There was a long line up, but for a good restaurant, I was willing to wait.
For $7.50, i got to pick my soup, my noodle and two kinds of toppings. I picked the tom yum goong soup, the udon noodle, deep friend fish cake and beef. The portions were VERY generous! AND yum it was sooooo........good. I also got a drink (cold drink was an addition $1), the lemon Ribena was awsome. But a side of deep fried pork chop was an extra $1.50. Double yummers!
I thought the servers there were not friendly, but they were not, not friendly. Pretty typical for a chinese restaurant. I think I am a little use to it.
Will definately go back!!!!
these types of noodle shops are the new rave in richmond. good, quick, and good value. the service leaves a lot to be desired, but once you get what you ordered, you really don't need them 'til it's time to ask for the bill. if you stick to the combo's guidelines, it's straight up cheap. it's when you start to change things up or add extras. i find it very amusing when people complain about being charged extra for a cold drink, or for some kind of substitution... it says you'll be charged extra right there on the menu! anyways, good eats, kind of busy at times, but that's ok, cattle cafe downstairs is almost exactly the same.
Went to Deer Garden today for late night dinner. The restaurant was quite packed as we walked in. Several servers saw us standing there, but chose to ignore us. After waiting for a couple of minutes, someone finally acknowledged our existence and took us to our table. We were given the menu and tea promptly as we sat down. Then when we were ready to order, a lady with short hair came over. Maybe it has been a tiring day for her, she kept a straight face all the way through, no smile, no facial expression, just took the order and left. It was quite the standard service style in a Chinese restaurant. So, let's move on. The food came quite quickly, and the server who brought the food was very friendly and nice. He was the one who pull the curve up for the restaurant, otherwise, I would have given them a 1 instead or 2. Anyway, food was great. We all ordered the infamous fish soup noodles and it was delicious. Portion was generous as well. Most of all, they don't add MSG to their food, which was excellent.
One of the friends paid for the bill at the tilt, and didn't leave any tips as we were thinking to do that at the table. Not knowing the situation, the cashier became very upset as she thought we were not going to leave her any tips. She stared at her fiercely, and later talked to her co-worker about the incident. They were very rude about it, and said "that's not enough" in their conversations. Then later when they found out there was money on the table, they seemed satisfied. Are you kidding me? Since when tipping becomes compulsory? We tip because we want to, not because we have to. And plus what service did they provide for us today? Nothing. Anyways, because of their attitudes, we all left with a frown on our faces. They got their tips at the end, but they lost four customers.
To be on the fair side, their food is good, but if they can provide more professional training for the servers, their business will definitely be better.
