Mrs. C and I spotted the Cucumber while in Richmond, and we decided to give this new place a try. It looked nice outside, and inside had a sort of 70's retro decor. We were seated by a pleasant server and studied the menus. We settled on a smoothie and mushroom burger for me, and a smoothie and fish&chips for my beloved.
The smoothies were quite smooth, and a good alternative to the usual beverages. My mushroom burger was interesting, and I liked the fried pepper that was included. The F&C was a huge portion. The batter had a unique flavour and was not greasy. The fries were fresh and hot.
The service was attentive but a little slow. The place was mostly clean, but I noticed some stains on the upholstery, and the w/c was not clean at all. They could improve that.
Overall, a decent experience and a nice change from the usual.
Recommended.
A girlfriend and I were looking for some grub in Richmond on a Friday night, and we didn't want to eat at the chain restaurants so she suggested we go to Cucumber Cafe. They have quite an extensive menu and they serve breakfast all day. Also, 80% of the menu items are under $10. We ordered a clubhouse sandwich with yam fries and an ham and egg omelette which comes with potatoes and fruit. We both enjoyed our dishes.
Service was not bad, although I found our waitress to be a bit too persistant, checking on us every 5 minutes. At least our waters were filled up.The restaurant itself is quite nice and clean.
I would definitely come back again.
FOOD: terrible. I'm sorry, but it was the worst pesto chicken linguine I've ever had and there was way too much olive oil. And my boyfriend agreed that it was tasteless and bland. My boyfriend ordered the mushroom burger and he didn't like the sauce in it.
SERVICE: our server was nice and friendly, but he was very persistent and a little annoying. He would come by to ask if we needed anything and even after we said no, he would ask if we needed pepper, mustard, or ketchup. I just felt like he didn't know what he was doing and he was very scattered and unorganized. He might have been new, but I expected a little more.
Value: Compared to many other restaurants, this one is good with prices and affordable for most people. I think I would've given a higher rating if I actually liked the food.
Ambiance: It's nice in there and there's a little outside courtyard area the middle of the restaurant. We got seated near the back of the restaurant and it was extremely cold. The air conditioning was on and for some it may have been refreshing and nice, but I thought it was too cold. Otherwise it's a comfy place to go.
Great food, great service and great interior.
This place has the best omelettes, and burgers.
My favorite is the mushroom burger. Love the Angus beef AA patty, and the mushrooms. Fries are great too, with the apple coleslaw.
The tijiuna omelette is great too. Large portion. The omeletter was served on top of a quesadilla (tortilla with melted cheese), which I thought was interesting, and very inventive.
Pass on the guiness eggs benedict though, not worth the 12.00.
My wife and I work out at the Steve Nash Sports Club next door. One day we decided to check out Cucumber Cafe as it looked quite inviting from outside. As we entered, we were looked after right away and we were seated in a booth. The ambience seems really nice and resembles a posh and upscale bar.
I ordered a Tex Mex Fritatta while my wife offered a sunrise Pannini. The food took about 10 minutes as we sipped on some coffee. Once the food arrived, my wife and I were in a big shock to see nothing but grease on the pannini as it dripped through the bread. My Frittata was nothing better than disgusting to say the least. I think the chef was really confused and didn't quite understand what a Frittata meant. I saw a bed of flour tortillas stuffed with cheese and an open faced omlet with a grilled chicken breast and some salsa. The breakfast potatoes were most edible of all. My wife ordered a side ceasar salad which came with no dressing. The chef is trying to do a fusion frittata but I could suggest a tex mex Frittata could just do with some chorizo sausage and not some imitation flour stuffed with cheese. The omlet needs more care as well as it was way overcooked. We do not recommend this and definitely suggest Denny's as an alternate place. The food might not be fresh but at least it is edible.
Being a long time resident of Richmond (over 30 years), it's
interesting how the area around St.Edwards Drive is being "born" again. In the 70's, there was a couple of fine dining locations, like Suehiro's near the old hotel. Now that the same hotel has been renovated (a Radisson now I believe) it seems to be a little rejuvenated. My sister recommended this place and I gave it a whirl. The menu is not extensive or special, but the burger I ordered was very good. It just seems like a simple place.
The service was prompt and very friendly. But stepping into
the restaurant was like wow, stepping into my mom's kitchen when I was six. Big lights low to the tables, gaudy wallpaper and
big, velvetly booths that you need a ladder to climb down from.
I think this would be a ok choice for lunch or breakfast.
This place wasn't terrible but I don't think it has enough going for it to draw me back. It tries too hard to be 70's retro-cool with the Swedish-ball light fixtures, colour scheme and furnishings. Too many hard surfaces and a low ceiling cause the acoustics to be really bad with noise bouncing all over the place. I could hear every conversation in the place except for the one at my own table.
The waiter obviously felt that hurried service and clipped exchanges of conversation made for good service. The only way we heard about the evening's specials was by overhearing another waiter tell a neighbouring table - too late for us as we had ordered already. Stopping with half-empty plates from other tables to inquire "You guy want more drink?" is an unacceptable way to inquire if we would like refills. A) I am not a guy B) I don't care to see the remnants of other people's dinners. Garlic bread that was supposed to accompany a pasta dish was brought only after inquiring as to its whereabouts - obviously it was accidentally left at the service counter as it was cold when brought 10 minutes later.
The food was just OK (a step or two above IHOP) and portions pretty decent. Delicious nachos, but the burgers were kind of dry - that may be because they are Angus (lower fat) beef and whole wheat buns with sparing use of mayo.
This was one of the best eating out experiences I have ever had in a family restaurant. My kids got great little fun packs to keep them entertained while we were waiting for the food. The prices were really good. The food portions were a decent size, we all were happy and full by the end of the meal. The waitress was so attentive even though the restaurant was full, I didn't feel I was waiting forever for my tea, the dessert or bill.
The best part was my picky kids were happy and ate everything on their plate. That tells me a lot.
Drove by this place numerous times and finally decided to try it with some friends after reading a little snippet in the Vancouver Province food section. Needless to say, you shouldn't believe everything you read.
The retro decor was funky and added to the ambiance. I was there with family and everyone ordered a variety of food from burgers, omlettes to sandwiches. All of it badly done. No one enjoyed the food. The best part of my meal was the bite and a half they give you of the apple coleslaw.
The burgers were overcooked. The mushrooms dried out. The omelletes rubbery. The potatoes that came with the omelettes you could tell weren't even touched after placing in pan till plating. Bottom ones were burnt while ones on top were uncooked. I won't even touch the panini's.
I truely wish I had gone to Denny's instead. At least I know everyone would've enjoyed thier meals.
I've been to the Cucumber Cafe twice and I haven't been dissapointed.
The value is right and the dishes I've had have been fantastic based on the price.
I think the vision of this new chain is an upscale all day diner like Denny's. The decore is ambitious and you either appreciate it or will find it completely appalling. If this restaurant opened in Yaletown it may suit better and most new restaurant these days are trying to appeal to the 20-35 age range rather than the 35-55 and over.
So if your dining experience is complately dependant on the decor of the restaurant you'll find yourself on either side of the spectrum. You'll love it or hate it.
As for the food I've had the Linguini Bolognese, soup, and some apple dessert and they've been great.
Service was good since we were the only ones there and were attended to very well.
I myself don't like the retro 60's kind of look for myself but I can appreciate that the restaurant concept is trying to do something different.
We had the most enjoyable breakfast last Sunday and will be returning next Sunday with our grandaughter. The menu prices were very good considering the quality of the food offered. Staff were very pleasant and informative. Surroundings bright and clean. I could not fault this experience in any way and look forward to dining soon. We dine out very often during the week and it is so nice to try something different from the usual chain of establishments.
Last week I ventured back to Cucumber Cafe for the first time in over a year (I think it had just opened when we first tried it). WOW! Much improved since my last visit. The staff was all very friendly and seemed to work together well. The hostess was very friendly and talkative, as was young gentleman who was supervising. He stopped to ensure our table was happy with the meals and service which you don't see very often anymore, and then went on to tell us about the new gym being opened by Steve Nash next store this summer.
Our server Jenny was friendly, quick, and kept us laughing. The food came out in 10 minutes which was pretty nice since they seemed busy, and I would highly recommend both the Steak Salad and the Salmon Salad as we tried both. Both were very fresh with unique dressings and fair portions.
The only negative this restaurant has it the layout. Even though the food and service is good, you never get fully comfortable because the booths are packed in so close and the room echos in a way that you can't help but notice every conversation around you. I guess this is a good problem since the last time we visited the restaurant we were one of three tables in it, this time it was over half full. They are doing something right for sure.
I ventured to the Cucumber Cafe last night with my girlfriend and another friend.
After ordering my friend ran down the road to Richmond Mini where a buddy had promised us some 50% off coupons.
While he was gone our crispy chicken strips arrived. I took the first bite and looked at raw chicken. The strips weren't even cooked halfway through. We were the only customers in the restaurant at 6:30 pm on a Friday night. So maybe the kitchen wasn't being attentive.
When the server came back with my pop refill I only had to hold up the half cooked chicken for him to see and he turned white. The server apologized immediatly and said that we would take that straight back.
The kitchen sent out new chicken strips (they did not recook the same ones) and they were tasty although prefab.
I had the BBQ burger, my girlfriend had the cheddar burger and my other friend had the smoked ribs.
The ribs were reported as tasty, although not smoked but boiled.
The cheddar burger was very much like my burger. Grease laden and pumped full of MSG (or something of similar flavour). The burger patties are prefab, like the chicken strips, and were far from even the best prefab I've had.
When the plates hit the table they were each hot on only one corner. My burger was hot, my fries were cold and my coleslaw cold (thank goodness). The plates are not kept in a plate warmer and they use heatlamps to bring everything up at different times.
I was not feeling well later that night, although I am sure it was not the chicken (too short of an incubation), it was from that meal and I can only assume it was the rapid injection of grease into my system.
Total bill was $29 with the chicken strips removed and 50% off the three entrees.
In short, we will not be going back, even with 99% off coupons.
Things have not improved since the review below in April. We went to try it out for a Saturday lunch as we often pass by on Oak Street. It is absolutely the worst restaurant experience we have had in the Vancouver area. After being told someone would be right with us, we waited 10 minutes to be shown to our table. The place was maybe half full. We were surrounded by tables full of dirty dishes. The people who ate off them had already left. We waited five minutes to be offered coffee and given our menus. 10 minutes later, the one lone waiter arrived sweaty and flustered to take our order. The order took 40 minutes to arrive. The food was awful and it was cold. We had eggs and bacon. Now how can you screw that up. An hour and a half later we left angry leaving half the cold food on the plate. As we left, we noted that those tables full of dirty dishes were still left untouched. Never again, there are too many places to go around here. This place will be in receivership as word spreads.
We went to this restaurant because a friend had heard about it & wanted to go.
Upon arriving, we had to wait for 10 minutes to be seated. It was lunch time & the restaurant was pretty full...ok, no big deal.
The restaurant looked quite nice, as far as the decor was concerned.
Everyone ordered smoothies except me...I had an ice tea. The smoothies were...ok.
Then the food came. I wish they had kept it! I ordered a mushroom burger...What a disaster! It was horrible! The meat was dry & overcooked. Half of the fries were overcooked as well. Ketchup didn't make them taste any better. Other people ordered an omlette, panini, & cheddar burger. No one liked their food. I tried small tastes of the other meals. I would have to agree with them. I don't like Mc D's very much but, honestly, I think their quarter pounder is prepared better than the burgers we had here. I would HIGHLY advise AGAINST eating at this restaurant. The worse food I have had in a long time.
Just like the title states, decent. This place is decend, it isn't bad, but just didn't wow me to come back again. For the price they charge and the food that is offered. I rather go to IHOP or some other breakfast, egg, bacon serving restaurants. I tried and most likely I won't come back. Just to far from where I live, so no second chance here.
Just okay place.
