superb Szechuan, free tea!

my husband and i had a craving for Szechuan, and based on the reviews provided here, decided to try Chuan Xiang Ge at about 5pm on Sunday. we were seated immediately(we were one of only three groups in the restaurant)and offered a choice of two types of complimentary hot tea- chrysanthemum or a jasmine scented variety(my husband selected this variety in Mandarin, but didn't know the English translation). loved the tea! for dinner, we selected "diced chicken and peanuts(/kung pao chicken)," "bean curd and vegetable," and their green onion pancake to share. the chicken was tender and juicy in a perfectly flavored sauce, with a heat level of about 2/5 if consumed apart from the hot pepper pieces in the dish(for those with less heat tolerance). the mild bean curd and vegetable provided an ideal balance and relief from the occasionally extreme fiery sneak attack in select pepper pieces. the onion pancake was deep-fried, flaky, and tender. while delicious on its own, it tasted even better dredged in leftover sauce from the chicken dish. the portions were generous, the price was reasonable. we will definitely be back!

Good Szechuan in Richmond
By Spelunca of Vancouver (45 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 5:44pm [Dine in]

Preamble: leisurely weekday lunch for three

Food: somewhat overly MSGed up was a constant, but if you can overlook it, we enjoyed dishes such as "marinated chicken with spicy", Pickled Cabbage and Shredded Pork Stomach Soup, spicy wontons in chili sauce and cold noodles. There is the noticeable Szechuan spice but it was just a little pleasant numbing of the mouth and not the kind that will make you want to run to the washroom.

Service: I think this is a husband (cook) and wife (server)-run business so the service was both sincere and efficient.

Value: at $12/person inclusive it is not the cheapest RIchmond lunch you can find, but for the quality of food it is not the most expensive either

Ambiance: somewhat tucked away in the corner within site of Save on Foods from the back. Simple decorations but you feel clean there, which is more than you can say for other Richmond places.
