From our dining room, savour our spectacular view of Steveston's Fisherman's Wharf, or enjoy our view of Mt. Baker and Cannery Channel from our enclosed patio.
My gf and I had thought to try this place before, but it took a rainy evening to bring us here.
From the outside entrance at the foot of the steps, we expected a bar type ambiance. Upon entering, we found the 1980s. Tacky wallpaper and placemats were some of the hues that coloured the room. Still, I thought it was gutsy if not intended and charming.
The menu was fairly broad and aimed to please everyone. My gf started with the white clam chowder, with some doubt that it was forgery from a can. It offered up few actual pieces of substance, vegetable included. My unremarkable almost tangy french onion soup was edible but unmemorable. Both of us ordered fish and chips and while still hot the fish portion was completely bland. Fish lacked seasoning, batter lacked seasoning - lack goodness for the tartar sauce. Batter was too thick given the size of the fish. We finished with a rarely found peach melba, a dish showcasing the summer fruits of fresh peaches and raspberries. Instead, we recieved canned peaches and strawberries. The best item that night was the complimentary fresh bread at the start.
A very aimable greeter brought us to our table and our server was pleasant while another server tended to our water refills. I can hardly fault the service here it wasn't amazing but it was certainly better than just good.
A blast from the past, but the food won't bring me back.
Have been here before, was served food that was not just bad but rotten. The manager at the time turned his nose up at us when we told him it wasn't good enough, telling us he would only comp half of it but that "you have to pay for the rest because you ate some." Horrible horrible experience.
So when we saw they had new ownership, we went back for a try, to see if the new people had got it right.
Sadly, the 'new people' is the same manager who refused to admit his obviously frozen (and twice warmed up) food was bad and treated us like criminals when we sent it back.
We took a look at the food on a few people's tables before sitting down, could see that it was just as bad as previously experienced, and with the former manager walking towards us with a scowl, we left without ordering. The expressions on customers faces was one we remembered - it said "They expect me to eat this?"
This once manager, now owner, thinks that if he serves bad food it won't matter, because the largely tourists that walk in the door will fly home and never tell anyone locally how bad it is. The only locals who go there are older people who just want somewhere quiet to sit and finish a tasteless dish.
In my experience, this is the worst restaurant not just in Steveston, but in BC.
I'm not much of a food critique neither I have ever written a review of a restaurant before but after being into this place just under 2 hours earlier and my experience with the food and service, I just wanted to make potential visitors aware of what to expect.
The asian lady with the cropped dyed hair was our server for the night. She also seemed to be the owner by the way she dealt with us at the end. She was literally throwing plates and utensils in front of us while she was setting up the table for us. I would describe the experience as being very uneasy and uncomfortable as if we were unwanted there. She had a rude tone to her voice and seemed to be in a hurry as if she had a train to catch. Service at a cheap fast food restaurant would be way better than this I would say. I have never had this kind of negative experience at a restaurant before - though I've eaten at place with worse quality of food. Just to be clear, I am an asian myself and was there with my wife, three kids and another couple.
When I was paying, she handed over the card machine to me and literally asked me to enter in the %age gratuity. I punched in 0 (zero) and she looked at me and asked "you are not going to put anything", and I said "No". She asked me "why you didn't find my service ok", I said "No, sorry but I found it a bit weird, and I would keep it at that". She said "whatever". The she said "well I try my best". I said "well unfortunately I didn't feel the service was good". She again said "whatever". I would think a normal person would have been really pissed at those comments, but I just didn't bother continuing the conversion as I know I can just walk out of the restaurant and never come back here again. So I did just that. Went downstairs and told my wife and friends and they all found the service and food very bad.
I don't have much to say about the food as it was definitely not worth the price they were charging. I actually found the food not at all good, even if they were charging half the price.
Lastly, the view was great but the ambiance was something from an 80's dinner.
Again to sum it all up, I would advise to stay away from this place. Both service and food are bad. You are better off spending your money at a McDonalds.
We have gone to this restaurant a number of times over the years and the quality of food had consistently deteriorated significantly. The restaurant smells musty, seating is old and uncomfortable, the food is bland, overcooked and over salted. The only reason we went rarely in the last few years was because mom enjoyed the salmon dinner.
The reason for my review is we bought a gift certificate a week before Christmas 2010 to give to mom which was sold to us by the older gentleman (maitre-d) who has been there many years. A few weeks later we found out the restaurant was closed. When it reopened (under "new owners") we found out the "new owner" is the maitre-d who sold us the gift certificate just a few weeks earlier and will now NOT honour the gift certificate. This guy OBVIOUSLY knew he would be buying this restaurant or taking it over but he never uttered a word to us that we should use it within two weeks or so or he will not honour these gift certificates once he became the new owner. This restaurant is still operating under the same Charthouse name and when we checked at the restaurant they still have the same cook so the same horrible bland food. Out of respect for people's hard earned money, not to mention risking peoples' returning business, the LEAST he could do is honour gift certificates HE personally sold to customers. We will NOT return and will never recommend anyone we know to go there.
Over the past 7 years I used to visit this restaurant on a monthly basis just to watch what was once a nice classy reasonably priced restaurant turn into a 'tourist trap' with sub standard food and service.
The only good thing that is still left of this place is the view to the Steveston fisherman's wharf.
Last time I was there ( after a long absence), I took some family and friends visiting from out of town that were interested in eating good fish dishes to what I described as a great fish place that with nice views of Steveston wharf.
To my embarrassment, the menu was poor in selections and pricy. The portions served were small and mediocre in quality ad taste. Top that with a very loud and aggressive Chinese waitress that did everything in her power to push us to order the more expensive entrees and you can understand the source of my shame.
The following day we tried the Blue Canoe restaurant just bellow the Chart house, folks, if it is Fish and sea food you desire, skip the Chart House and save yourself the stair climb and had directly to Blue Canoe which is just bellow the Chart house.
As I said, this was last time at the Chart House ... so sad.
We had eaten here previously a couple times and the was food was pretty good. Decided to give it a try again but started to get 2nd throughts after reading the other recently bad reviews. We are kind of the mindset that "don't believe it before you try it" so we decided to go anyway.
The Owner sat us....he kept walking around like he was "the man" ....was kinda weird. The server was young but polite and quiet....seemed to have a basic knowledge of the menu but no a lot of confidence.
I had the 7oz sirloin which was pretty good actually....had it medium rare and the cook did a good job. The prawns and scallops were decent. The baked potato was really dry like it was nuked in the microwave. No matter how much butter I put on it didn't really help! The vegatables were dry and hard. Absolutely no flavor. The mushrooms, onions and tomato's beside the steak were mush.
My wife had a pasta dish. She had a chicken breast added to the dish for $4.95 but the chicken was just that pre-cooked and cut chicken breast you'd buy in the deli aisle with the fake grill marks. She said the dish was "edible" but overall quite bad. Sauce was dry with little flavor.
With the desert we split, entree's, and 2 glasses of wine it was nearly $70.00 and totally not worth it. You could get a way better meal for the same price or less.
The decor in there is still from the early 90's or late 80's.
If in the area, I highly recommend you do NOT eat there. Try the Sockeye City Grill, Tepanade or even one of the local fish and chip joints.....you'll be way happier!!!
