Very tasty food

I ate here for an early dinner recently after seeing the glowing reviews on Dine Here. The room is nice, clean and well appointed.

We ordered a bunch of dishes including the thinly sliced beef and beef short ribs for grilling. Both were tasty and of much better quality that I am used to at the other Korean BBQ houses around Metro Van especially AYCEs. We also ordered some rolls and a yaki udon with enoki and bacon. All the food was better than I was expecting and very good. The service was prompt and we were probably done in 45 minutes which is a short stay with Korean BBQ. Some might find the prices a little higher than other places but considering the quality of the food, I think the value is solid.

Overall, I was satisfied with my experience here and if I am in the area looking for some quality eats especially BBQ, I will return.

So I submitted a review before but now it's been deleted, not sure why, but all I did was give an honest account
of my experience there. Went on a Saturday night with my hubby and Dad and was seated at quite a large table meant for 6, which was quite cool, but we were told that there was a reservation there for 7:30pm. Steady flow of customers in and out and it was around 6pm when we arrived. Decor is dark and the restaurant itself quite small. Service is friendly enough but on this particular night I felt a bit rushed, especially when they came to our table many times to clear empty dishes and refill the tea. We ordered a combination of sushi rolls and BBQ items. I enjoyed the BBQ items more than the chef special sushi rolls. We had lotus roll, crunchy roll and supreme roll, which were slightly on the mushy and "fishy" side so I was quite unimpressed. I really hope that the regular rolls are better. The BBQ items included the beef slices, the ribs and the spicy lamb. They were fun to cook and I liked eating it, but the taste was a bit too sweet for my Dad's liking. Overall, food was meh and a bit on the pricey side - $80 for what we definite too much. I don't really understand the rave reviews for this place - I didn't think it was that great at all.

Good sushi at reasonable prices

We had a night out with some friends, and one suggested we try Charcoal. Given it was a Sushi and BBQ restaurant, I fully expected to walk into a Korean BBQ place with Sushi on the side.

We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in that it in fact was the opposite. A decent sushi restaurant with BBQ on the side. Usually these BBQ places would have a strong smokey smell inside (that your clothes smell of days afterward) but the air was quite clear here.

We ordered a mix of hot foods like Tempura and Agadeshi Tofu, some of their special rolls, and an assortment of Sashimi. Everything came promptly and was very fresh.

The service was top notch, as our tea was refilled constantly. When we mentioned one of us had a sesame allergy, they even went to the trouble to ask the chef for ingredients in all the items we ordered. Truly above and beyond!

Overall we were quite happy and stuffed at the end of the meal. For 4 people it worked out to around $75, which isn't exactly cheap, but not expensive either. Certainly a place we will return to in the future.

UPDATE from previous post

I've been to Charcoal well over 15-20x now and I think it's time for an update. The food itself is still fairly consistent and fresh, and I appreciate the photo album of pictures for those visual eaters out there. However, it's disappointing that the service has never been that solid - for all the times that I patron their business never once have I been recognized as a regular even though I'm being served by the same people, sometimes even within the same week. Service is very matter-of-fact and to-the-point, they want you to get in and get out cause the place has picked up over the years and once they drop your food off don't expect to see them again.

Value has slided because the price of their speciality rolls have gone up significantly - I ordered a few of the ones from the photo album (not on the menu) priced around $12-$14 and all were disappointing, no unique taste just more expensive fish being mashed up "fushion style". The worst offender though would be their "Lobster Yakiudon" - I believe it was $16 complete with ZERO lobster whatsoever. It was 100% regular shrimp overcoated in a nasty 5-spice sauce topped with some roe. That's it. No lobster and no taste of lobster unless you consider 5-spice lobster. I felt robbed because for 3 people and 5 dishes that night our bill came to $87 with tax and tip. Charcoal used to be a solid go-to place for me, but now I wouldn't go there unless I had to - there are so many Japanese restaurants in Richmond that can offer you fresh sushi and more bang for your buck with friendlier service too.

Variety and Quality

Wanted to have a nice, foodie night out somewhere we haven't been before the BF and I decided to try Charcoal based on the reviews. We feel like we've eaten at every sushi place in the city, so this sounded like something more original.
I found the selection of chef's rolls smaller than at Tomoya (my local fav, in Burnaby) but there were some different ones so I was happy. Some of the "different" appetizers were again also found at Tomoya, but there were a few we hadn't seen. So OK we got adventurous.
-Crunchy Roll (Chef's roll) because of the recommendations on here. Boy were you guys right! I never thought mango could be savoury in a sweet way (does that even make sense? Because that's what I tasted). It was mushy, yes. It had mango which is mushy and raw (spicy, I think) tuna on top. But there was also the crunch in the middle just to add this battle of spicy, savoury, sweet and soft and crunchy all dancing around in your tongue. Its pretty awesome.
-Sea Snail Salad because, well its sea snails! Honestly if you've had jelly fish there isn't much difference. They're really chewy to eat and they are pretty tasteless. I don't think this is Charcoal's fault I just didn't find anything thrilling about these guys. The ONLY thing they did was further enhance whatever flavours I had just eat (like, eat them after a crunchy roll to prolong your experience). Weird, but not really worth ordering.
-FireBalls (haha) YES! Lightly battered avacado and crab balls, and they are even better than they sound! Don't miss these!
-(Forget the name) fish and cheese sticks. They were VERY cheezy, tubes of fish. Deep fried. Gourmet? No. Delicious like only deep fried cheese is? YES! I'm a poutine kind of girl so this is right up my alley.

I can't remember what the bill was but it was certainly reasonable. Never once had to ask for tea, they kept up pretty well. Our server explained some things on the menu for us (they have some different kinds of sashimi, for you sashimi lovers. We couldn't try any because of the situation in Japan right now, so definetly will be coming back...next year.) and she checked in to make sure that not only everything was OK but also that we were enjoying it!
It was busy at about 8pm on a Thursday night which is a good sign. We only had to wait 15 minutes though (there is no where to wait so you'll want to come back). We wandered the London Drugs because it was rainy, came back and there was another group waiting for a table. They crammed themselves right in and were eyeing our table but as soon as we walked in our waitress led us right there. Pretty awesome service!
That other group only had to wait maybe 3 more minutes and their table was ready too. I would definetly come back here again, just to see what other seasonal specials they had.

Amazing Food!

I've been here many times, and the good has always been impeccable, in taste and presentation. My grandparents were hesitant to eat the dishes the first time we came here. They claimed they did not wish to "ruin" such beautifully prepared dishes with their chopsticks. In any case, we've returned so many times the waiters recognize us and ask us about our grandparents.

Having tried every one of their special rolls now (I try to eat one or two new ones every time i go) i can conclude my favorites are most definitely:
1. The AAA Roll
A perfect combination of flavors.

2. Indian Roll
Very flavorful, and i am a sucker for chopped scallops.

3. Snow White Roll
The idea of coconut flakes on Sushi was genius! The flavors combine very nicely, though i only wish for a bit more spice in their spicy salmon.

And we can't forget their Golden Roll, a roll we order every time, because of its Value, and ingenuity, i mean, deep fried sushi?!

Service was great. Our tea was always refilled without us asking, and we didn't have to ask for the free Miso soup (during Lunch only, i believe), we were offered it.

This restaurant truly deserves a 5 for value. Incredible food and a very low price tag. Very rarely have we ever gone past $15.00 per person, yet we always end up eating too much and end up packing leftovers. No, my family is not anorexic either.

Overall ambiance is that of a high class sushi restaurant and the colors reflect such. There was a large amount of room for us to sit and enjoy our food.

I only wish the restaurant was larger. I've noticed many times that customers are waiting by the front door for a seat, which reflects the reputation of Charcoal. Keep up the good work! I will begin sampling your sashimi and appetizer menu's throughout future visits!

This place has the best sushi that I have had in Richmond, ever. Overall I would definitely place in my favorite 3 spots for sushi of all time. The presentation and flavors were both beyond my expectations. These guys have done their homework and every roll that I tried was among the most delicious I have eaten in my lifetime. We tried a couple of appy's and they were also excellent. If you go here, you must have the "crunch roll", it was tops of the rolls that we tried.
Great service here too as our cups were never empty and it felt like at least one of the servers was paying some attention to us. Good decor and very cleanly environment too which is lacking in other restaurants in the same genre.
I would highly recommend coming here to eat and plan on doing so myself very soon.

This place is better every time we go! Korean style BBQ in the center of the table, and some crazy sushi rolls on their menu. There is a photo album at each table with almost every menu item on it! Nice ambience, prices are great and has better service than similar spots around town. I would highly recommend it!

I went to charcoal with my girlfriend for dinner. We ordered sashimi, kobe beef stone bowl (so good), charcoal roll, big crunch roll and some short ribs. The rolls were huge and delicious, my favorite out of the 2 wouls be the big crunch roll. The stone bowl was so good, the beef came rare in a hot stone bowl, the waitress mixed the rice on the spot and after we waited 5 min the rice touchin the bowl got crispy.... sooo good. Make sure to book reservation if you are going after 6 cuz it gets really busy and there isnt alot of room inside.

Great sushi and bbq

I went to charcoal for dinner with my gf and had high hopes.
When we arrived we were seated at the bar because none of the tables were available and was told the wait would be long. A bit disheartening but nothing to get too down about.
We ordered the crunch roll, indian roll, charcoal roll, bbq beef and bbq chicken wings.
I have to say they were all very good with the exception of the wings which were alright.
The sushi is one of the better ones I've tasted so far.
Service was solid, our tea always got topped up when low.

Overall it was a good experience and fulfilled our sushi cravings.

Revisited this place for lunch and the quality and flavor of the food remained incredible. In my August 15 review a commented that the meal came without tea. On this occasion tea was provided. I had a spicy tuna roll ensemble that left me more than satisfied, in fact stuffed.

My only critical comment was that while the service was crisp and attentive, I could not in any way characterize it as overly friendly.

Charcoal Sushi and BBQ Restaurant is worth your time and money.

We received a promotional take out menu in our condo mail box a week ago.

It picked my interest, as the menu was professionally presented and had several dishes we enjoy eating. Added bonus, it is walking distance of where my partner and me live - less then 5 min walk...

Goggled this restaurant and the reviews were all 4 1/2 of 5 out of 5.
We were hungry after a long day of work, did not have the energy to prepare food, needed an escape and felt this place was worth a try - went in with low expectations (as the disappointments outweigh the small treasures since moving to BC's metropolitan cities...) Too many restaurant of low quality...

We are thankful we ate at "Charcoal Sushi and BBQ!

As per past reviews the presentations is great and the sushi is just the right bite size, following Japanese style, but with creative/modern twists...

Our server was jovial, attentive and he had a more trendy (as in being non traditional) approach to service.

It is of great value as; affordable, taste and visually stimulating . We went once yesterday evening and tonight we did take out (even the take out presentation was eye candy).

We will introduce our friends and colleges to this place and cannot wait to try the lunch menu.

Charcoal Sushi and BBQ please keep the high quality and do not lower these standards as you become more established.

Worth a try and will be going back OFTEN.

Love this place! Came here for the first time on a Friday evening. Place was packed but we were greeted promptly by the host. The menu has a wide variety of unique rolls, which were creative and delicious. I have to admit we were pleasantly surprised by how great the quality of the sushi rolls were, since most places that try to combine bbq with sushi usually fail at their attempts at both - but not this place! What impressed me most was the quality of service. For a busy Friday evening, the waiting staff were incredibly attentive. They were friendly and knowledgeable, and even came by frequently to refill teas without us having to heckle them (don't remember the last time that happened at a busy restaurant!) Will definitely be back!

I stop by London Drugs one afternoon to do some shopping and noticed that the korean restaurant that was next to it had closed down, and there was a new restaurant called Charcoal that now occupies it, so me and my friend went to check it out. Man was i glad i did. The interior is brand new, with nice leather chairs. Looked very modern and high class. I was greeted right away by a friendly waitress. I ordered the lunch special yakisoba and tuna roll while my friend ordered chicken katsu don with fried tofu. The sushi came very fresh and the yakisoba was sizzling hot. My friend also enjoyed his katsu don really much. The waitress was very attentive, often coming by to refill our tea. For the quality and great service we got, the value was excellent. Both my friend and I left very impressed. I will definitely come back again to try their korean bbq items. TWO THUMBS UP!

Favourite weekly sushi joint!!

Charcoal has very quickly become our favourite weekly sushi joint. It has a nice ambience, very friendly & attentive crew and most importantly serves delicious sushis & sashimis.

Chef special rolls over here are excellent. A lot of different flavours are mixed in an intricate & tasteful way. Maple leaf roll is probably the best sushi roll I ever tasted :)

Another important thing about Charcoal is consistency. I’ve been there 4-5 times already & food quality was always the same. It’s not like those hit & miss places.

Was not excited to try it out -- was underwhelmed by most of our dishes (most of which were specials) and found the" salmon with five sides" absolutely inedible, as did my date! My date wanted to go here because it was near her work and she was craving asian. It's a fun spot, but I'm glad I didn't line up for 2 hours to get lame food and asian service. Took my lady to a nice private place after and shared a drink to wash out the taste of this place.

Friends and I decided to check out the restaurant after reading the positive reviews. It was a fantastic dining experience. Great special rolls, especially the crunch roll. It was a refreshing menu that went beyond the usual Japanese fare. I was impressed by the quick efficient service; they were attentive but not interferingly fussy. I thought the ingredients were fresh, there were interesting flavour combinations, and the atmosphere was clean, modern, no muss no fuss, comfortable. It wasn't hoity toity, nor was it a slum. We will definitely be back again and again, especially to try the bbq.
