Normally I do not write reviews but I had such a great experience here I thought I should share. I had heard some good things about this place and decided to finally give it a try. My friend and I went in on a Friday night and managed to snag a corner booth! Already off to a great start!
We were greeted with menus and water right away. The server explained to us that we could choose entrees individually or we could make it a 3 course for just a few dollars more. Well we decided to treat ourselves. I started off with the asparagus salad and my friend had the chowder. We both had steaks (it is a steakhouse after all). My filet was the best steak I have had in quite awhile (even better than my husband's cooking). My friend Lisa chose the Rib Eye and somehow managed to eat the whole thing! I couldn't believe it. And since we had come on a Friday night we also got crab legs as well for no extra charge! We were informed they do this every Friday. Note to self....Come back next Friday.
We were so stuffed from our meals that we decided to take our desserts home with us which the server wrapped up nicely and even separately for us.
Overall the service was very attentive. Our water and wine were topped up regularly, which is always a big plus. The steaks were flavorful and juicy and I was very satisfied with everything. I think I may have found a new favorite dining spot!
Consinstently one of the best steakhouses I have been to. Excellent food and very friendly and professional service. I had their signature Carver salad, altough i am not a blue cheese dressing fan this was wonderful. The Filet Mignon was extra tender and delicious as always and perfectly complemented with red wine reduction. Creme Brule was presented in two different flavours and as a very generous portion.
Located next to a hotel on Westminster Hwy, you wouldn't notice it and drive right past it. But once you enter the premises, the decor is warm and inviting and the service is just as warm, friendly and inviting. The food portion to value is not bad and they can definitely cook steak; I tried their rib eye and my Dad had their filet mignon. Both cooked to the right temperature, tasty and had good presentation & flavors. My husband opted for their pork ribs, which he enjoyed a lot and my Mom ventured outside of the box and tried their oyster appetizer which she enjoyed as well. Desserts were quite nice - our favorite was the lemon cheesecake, just the right amount without being overly sweet. I liked how attentive our host and waitress were without being overly fussy and it overall it was a great place to bring my Dad for his birthday celebration. I just hope they get more people coming in; it was a bit sad to see that during a peak time on a Saturday night, they only had about 6 or 7 tables and it wasn't even full. Great steak place with tons of potential, they just have to stay alive. =)
My wife and I got out for a well deserved date night. Carver's was not our first choice but we are so happy we went there based on a recommendation. This was a truly special evening. Our (no less than) three different servers were wonderful - helpful, synchronized, professional and friendly but never intrusive. We started off with crab cakes and baked oysters and then moved on to the most amazing tender steaks we have ever had. We had 7oz @ 10oz Filet Mignons done to perfection. We highly recommend this place and if you ever go there make sure you forget the diet for a day and enjoy their 3 course meal feature.
I went to Carver's Steakhouse recently for a friend's birthday.
I enjoyed the food immensely. The steak I ordered was prepared exactly as I had requested, and the sides were great too. Everyone else in our party really liked their food as well.
However, the service was way too slow. Our server didn't really seem to know what he was doing, and got flustered easily. I could see he was trying his best, but for a restaurant that's half full on a Saturday night, it was odd that we weren't served our meals more quickly.
Our bills took over 1/2 hour to get settled, as well. In all, dinner took over three hours, which was a lot longer than any of us thought it would take.
I'd go back for that steak, though!
A number of us went out for diner and we were all very pleased with our choices. Everyone else had steak while I had the tuna. The seared tuna steak was outstanding. I love tuna and this was definetley the best tuna ever. Just slightly seared on the outside and warm on the inside. Excellent service also. We will definetly return.
We went out for our anniversary and enjoyed all the food. The appetizers were yummy. I had a filet mignon and it was cooked well and was very tender. My husbands lamb was also cooked exactly to order and was so tender it was cut easily with a butter knife. The desserts were excellent. The service was very doting and we didn't have any issues. We would go again, without question. It is a bit pricey, but the steak is nicer than you get in cheaper places. Higher end food compared to the Keg but not quite as amazing as Gotham. We aren't huge foodies but we enjoyed the meal and it was a lovely night out.
I thought I gave this restaurant a try despite the so so review since I heard from some friends the restaurants "weren't that bad" and now I regretted that I went and paid the hefty bill for the quality of food I get. My husband and I went on a Sat night and there was only four occupied tables in the restaurant that night. The services were attentive and great, the manager even came to our table a few times to ask us how we were doing. However, for the amount they charge for the food, it is not acceptable. My husband ordered the 3 courses set menu with tenderloin and the tenderloin was tasteless and looked burnt. I ordered the rib-eye, medium rare and it came out as medium and very oily. They claimed to place the steak on a sizzling plate so it might be cooked a little bit more than desired which I don't quite get it? If I ordered medium rare, why can't the chef timed it so that it came out as "medium rare" after the additional cooking on the sizzling plate? And I thought serving veggie are supposed to be a healthy choice but the vegetables that come with the entree were soaked in oil which I can barely eat them (basically my entire entree is soaked in oil).
Honestly I don't know how they can survive for the quality of food and the price they are charging, coz their menu price is not $$ but more like $$$ at least, but I guess since they are hotel restaurant that might help them to sustain their business.
Won't go again.
I went there 2 times and never be disappointed.
Appitizer: The baked oyster is so good. and it has 6 oysters!
Entree: I had Mignon. It was juicy and prepared perfectly. the side dish is gralic mashed potatoe which is a good match wtih the steak.
My friend had Rib Eye and New York steak. both are good and large in portion.
for $29, with appy and dessert, I would say it worths! excellent value.
Oh. by the way, the waiter & manager are so nice too.
How can you go wrong with their 3-course meal for $29? If you are a bread lover--then this is the place to try! Fresh, hot bread...crispy on the outside and warm & soft on the inside. 2 types of bread were served, 1 with Garlic pieces and 1 with cranberries. Served with oil & balsamic vinegar. Choices for appetizer were the applenut squash soup or Duck Prosciutto. Both were excellent and quantity was more than we expected. Rib-eye steak was well prepared, juicy & tasty. Potatoes & vegetables accompanied nicely. Dessert was lemon cheesecake--big portion & more than we thought we would get for a 3-course meal. My daughter however tired the halibut which was disappointiing. It was hard and overcooked. My daughter enjoyed the buttery potatoes and veggies though. Carvers is a steakhouse, so I guess seafood is something they have to work on to improve. We advised the manager about this and he quickly apologized and was happy we mentioned this to him. He deducted my daughter's 3-course meal off the bill and offered us lattes with our dessert. All in all, it was worth the $29 and you don't have to wait for the "dine-out" event to try this. I will definitely return to Carvers!
This is suppose to be a steak house? We had over 25 people in our party, almost everyone ordered steak and all of them came out way overcooked and chewy! Some more people arrived even later, also ordered the rib eye steaks and it came out well overcooked, for $40 and up for a steak Carver's needs to reconsider using a different head chef. The ambiance was very uncomfortable, the restrooms were in the hallway of the hotel, so you'd have to make your way out these 2 big doors and everytime it opens it brings extra light into the low lighting restaurant which is quite disturbing. Bad quality steak at fine dining prices, this place is a waste of money.
what kind of a steakhouse screws up the temperature of a steak? shouldn't they be good at it since its a steakhouse? asked for a medium rare steak and got a medium steak instead. For the $$$ they are charging i expect to have it cooked well($49 for the porterhouse). i would rather go to mortons and get a porterhouse for $57 and cooked the way i wanted.
had the table side caesar salad with the crouton bowl as well. the bowl was stale. the caesar dressing could be better.
my wife and I wasn't impressed with this steakhouse. 1 appy, 2 main course for almost $100 without wine a lil bit pricey!
wont be back!
A gemstone that is neglected!!! A good place for a great dinner.
Service: Standard, not exceptonal.
Servers might be a bit bored as this place is more on the quiet side. If you get them motivated a bit more, they will make your dining experience much more worthwhile.
Food: Excellent!
Customers should note that Carver's serve their steak HOT as noted on their menu as they use a special broil to cook their steaks which makes it look charred on the outside. The inside is still juicy and tender. Ordered rare and had a nicely charred edge and a succulent, juicy red center. Also, their sides and appetizers are EXCEPTIONAL and a HUGE BANG for the buck!
Ambiance: Modern, clean and West Coast.
Has a great fittings and a West Coast touch with the wood. Washrooms are located in the Hotel which is old and is in need of upgrade. Overall, great seating and comfortable environment.
Located across Richmond Hospital, Carver's steakhouse is located in the Executive Inn & Suites. It serves great food at an affordable price. Would definitely recommend to all.
Not recommended to others.
-Area.
We went there around 6pm and there weren't many others inside the restaurant.
The interior design for Carver's were good, very comfortable place. Overall, high end good comfort place.
-Food
Ordered steak and wine. When the steak came...we were shock....The outside were burn to black while the inside is still in cold temp...Guess they did not defrost it properly...Ask the waiter to change it...the second steak was cooked into medium well instead of medium rare....BIG disappointment. How can their chef cook the steak wrong 2 times in a row??? There weren't many customers inside the restaurant so they should have all the time they needed to make it right. BIG disappointment
-Service
The facial expression that our waiter gave us make us feel like we were the bad couple that complain about their food and want to get discount from them.
-Value
IF they can get things right, I will give them 3/5..As for now, can't very give anything other than 1. How can you hire a chef that cook the steak wrong 2 times in a row??
This place had great qualities when we walked in. Had reservations, place was clean, upscale, good service, great looking menu. Unfortunately, the food was extremely lacking. The sizzling steak was blah with no flavor and the chicken proscuitto dish was dry and small. The prices were pretty expensive considering the quality. My suggestion to them would be to stop trying so hard with the rectangular plates and over the top 'butler' service. People eat out for the food. I would have given this place a higher rating if the waiter was a jerk, it took 45 minutes to get my entree and the food was actually good. Too bad, Richmond really needs a good steakhouse.
I offer my thanks to Carvers for bringing an upscale steakhouse to Richmond. I have been there twice now and i look forward to going again. The service is top notch, the waiters are both personable and entertaining. I am a lover of ceasar salads and i was not disappointed. They bring you a crouton bowl with 2 lettuce leaves in it on a plate, then the make the salad for you table-side where you can dictate how they make the dressing. It was delicious. I have had the new york strip twice now and it was tender and juicy. You have a choice as to which sauce they make your steak in, and i have to advocate for the herb butter, it just brought together what was the perfect entre. The ambiance was exactly what i look for in an upscale establishment, the music was piano renditions of old favourites and the volume was right on. Its nice to know that i don't have to travel all the way downtown to experience a high class dinner.
Me & 5 colleagues went there last Friday night: I had a Filet Mignon and it was just delicious!!!! With a crusty & creamy potatoes gratin, really good. My colleague had the bison which I also tasted & it was also amazing & delicious. They prepared us Caesar Salad at the table, it was entertaining, but also really yummy. All 3 servers were really friendly and gave us a great personalized service, we really had a good time. We though the wine list was a bit poor, but the server told me they were working on a new Wine Card. I will definitely go back again & recommend this restaurant to anybody who likes great Steaks.
Went to Carvers with a group of about 20 coworkers this past Friday evening. The restaurant was empty. The waiter and bartender were very very nice, however, it was very apparent that they and the kitchen staff were unprepared for 20 guests to appear without notice or reservations. Service was extremely slow...from getting our water, drinks, and bread with olive oil & balsamic vinegar at the beginning of the meal (at least 45 minutes) to bringing our entrees out. It took TWO HOURS to have our dinner choices brought to our tables....a couple of us had salads (mine was the prawn cobb salad from the appetizer section of the menu). We actually starting joking that the management or maitre 'd had had to locate a butcher to slaughter the cow so the steaks could be prepared and/or that everything had to be defrosted in order to make it presentable and edible.
My salad was edible but nothing special. Others enjoyed their steaks but said the cuts were thin. The scalloped and baked potatoes were dry. Portions were small. Our choice of wine was good (a Malbec Cab).
For me and several in our party, the food was no better than a Sizzler or Golden Corral (US steak chains with low quality cheap food) yet the prices charged were those of a 4-star restaurant.
We will not return or recommend to others.
Went to Carvers with wife expecting an upscale steakhouse, not necessarily Gothams like, but was disappointed. First off the ambience was very plain and cheap looking, you could see aluminum and iron pipes running along the ceiling. The waiter was not very helpful with the menu, but I will say the maitre.d was very good.
As far as the meals the butternut squash soup was excellent and my prawn cobb salad was good. The entrees was where we were really let down. My wife had the seafood boullabaise which was very fishy tasting, my wife said it was because they didn't boil the fish first. I had an 8 oz. n.y. steak which was very thin and a little tough. The stuffed baked potato was very good though. For dessert we shared a poached pear with ice cream which was ok.
With 2 glasses of wine the bill came to $128, a little pricey for what was offered. I wouldn't go there again.
