I'm quite surprise I'm the first one to write a review on this new finding !!!
i just went a few days ago, as we were cruising on Alexandra Road looking for a place for dinner...and we noticed a new signage that is Butaya. So we peeked and went in. And OMG, exactly what I was craving for !!!! I Luv katsu !!! I've had this breaded pork loin in Japan and Taiwan couple years ago and I was looking for this all over Vancouver !!
We ordered two different set lunches just to try a bit of everything. One set came with breaded pork loin, fish, and 3 pc of prawns and the second set came with 6 pc breaded pork tenderloin. Started the meal with a bowl of cabbage salad to share paired with a fruity mayo mustard looking dressing which was quite refreshing. Then we started to grind the black and white sesame in special teeth-bowl and added the katsu sauce afterwards. They even have a picture printout to teach you how to do it! I'm quite surprised by now and looking forward to the food. The set came with a miso soup, bowl of rice and pickled cucumbers. The pickled cucumbers was the perfect pair with fried food. I haven't had such juicy and tender katsu for a while and this is one of the better ones. I could taste the natural sweetness of the pork (i can tell there's no msg) and it matches the sesamed pork sauce so well. Not to mention, the breaded batter is my fav - not too thick, not too thin and best of all is the crispiness. I was so full and satisfied by the time i saw the table next to us when their asparagus rolls and something that looked like croquettes arriving. I wish I had more tummy space at the that time.
Our sets were $12-13 each which is very decent compared to other jap's restaurant.
Remember to order an iced drink to go with your meal. Btw remember to bring cash as it is a cash only restaurant, hopefully they'll have debit soon.
As for the ambience - nice and simple; lots of parking, server - quite attentive and answered a lot of our questions.. like when did u guys opened, recommendation on what to order etc.
All in all, I'll definitely come back to try the rest of their menu.
