All ambiance and no substance

Food: been there 2 separate times and was disappointed with a majority of the food both times. Wok fried squid is atrocious! It's oily, not crispy and smothered in a garlic/red pepper concotion that just makes the whole thing salty. As an asian person, I am embarassed that it has the word "wok" associated with it. Ahi tuna was terrible as the sauce was overbearing, the rice was just plain and it just tasted salty once again. Steak was overcooked. Margherita pizza was plain and smoked salmon pizza with capers was again just salty and since there was no sauce, everything was falling off the pizza! The only passable dish was the battered halibut - accompanying rice was ok but there was way too much tartar sauce doused on it so I actually had to eat around it. Salt is definitely the theme of this place. Drinks, however, were not bad for the price.

Service: spotty - water glasses not refilled, bills mixed up with other tables, unable to located a server when needed and some were friendly while others snobby.

Value: Food was absolutely overpriced for what was received. The only thing that was close to being worth it were the cocktails.

Ambiance: dark with sharp lighting at tables which was quite nice but it's quite small and its no wonder the bar is packed with people. Music was much too loud and with the number of people, it is difficult to carry on a conversation. Decor was nice and seating was very comfortable. Love the banquets.

Overall, will not return if possible as equivalent restaurants in ambiance, especially those on No. 3, have much better food for the same price. Would only have drinks here if forced to come again! Avoid food if possible!!

Nice place and service, but salty food!!

I came here with a party of 8 for a friend's graduation dinner. The place is smaller than I expected but it was quite nice inside. There were TVs around the bar, which is located in the middle of the restaurant so they can be viewed from all tables. This made the males from our party very happy because there was an NBA game on.

We ordered a few pitchers of mojitos and beer. The raspberry mojito was good and very refreshing. On the other hand, the traditional mojito was tasteless.

We ordered a variety of appys and main dishes and to be honest, the food was very disappointing. The best dish was the yam fries which came out piping hot and crispy. But everything else was extremely salty, besides the salads. I ordered a Carbonara linguini and the sauce was sooo thick gluing the linguini together.

Service was good though. Our waitress was very sweet, although she did disappear for a bit after our entrees appeared.

We probably won't come back because the food was just bad.

Mediocre food.. Salty sauce The servers were great kids.

Tried the recommended dynamite salad. So so, not outstanding, the solid clump of ginger slices for sushi thrown into it was out of place in the taste mix. Too salty white sauce of unknown origin with the chicken wings, it looked and tasted like jello and sourmilk with salt. Server said it was blue cheese. I love and eat blue cheese regularly and believe me, there was no blue cheese in that salty milk jelly sauce. Fried calamari tasted acceptable(kitchen staff knew how to cook it) but I cant help but notice that the calamari was supertiny baby squids. The smallest I have ever eaten (diameter as big as your pinkie)

The service is ok but the food needs tweaking and improvement. The total value for the cost of dining here is 2 out of ten, 2 and half at the highest. One leaves with the feeling that this place has a small economical food budget but wants to appear and charge customers with fine dining rates.

Disappointing In Every Way

Have been to Brown's 3 times now - always hoping that it will have improved from the last visit ... The first time, the server forgot an entre - 3 of us ate, while one watched and waited. After asking our server at least 4 times, his entre finally came, after the rest of us had finished our meals. The second time, I went with 3 other ladies on a Monday night - the pizzas were on special. Two of us ordered the pizzas, the others, salads. The salads came, no pizzas ... after about 15 minutes we were told that the pizza dough was still frozen, and that it would take 30 minutes more to get our order! AHHH! The last time, (and it will be the last ...), there was a table of rather rowdy, noisy guys who had obviously had a little too much to drink - when we commented that we wanted to move tables, the manager wanted to know why. When we pointed out that we didn't want to sit and listen to the swearing and noise, he told us that maybe this wasn't the place for us - as it served a younger crowd. We are in our early 40's, and eat at Milestones, Earl's, Cactus Club, etc. and have never encountered this type of attitude!

Authentic, fun and busy Canadian cuisine, with reasonable selection of wines and good bread, although not the cheapest. The main thing about here is the sense of fun. The ambiance is active but pleasant and the service was excellent. It reminds one a bit of large Cactus Club restaurants, without the line-ups. HIghly recommended for a good meal with friends or friend in an informal setting.

Nice place to unwind

A few buddies of mine decided to stop by this place to unwind on a Friday evening after work. I'm not sure about the other not so pleasant comments, but we liked the place and our friendly waitresses.

The drinks were good and the food was a bit average, but hey, the friendliness of the staff and the ambience more than made up for it.

I'd go back if they sold pitchers!!!
By kitchen.devil of Richmond , BC (6 Reviews)

I just dont get why they don't sell pitchers and local brew. All there beers are there homemade beers which i guess is a good strategy for the franchise to make more money and i guess buying glasses is more expensive then buying pitchers but shouldn't there priority be keeping there customers happy and wanting to go back?? We had a good time when we were there, we had a funb time ordering there special shots and trying there awesome appys but it ended up being very expensive for what we got. The service was awesome but mit wshould be because it's such a small place. The owner was a cool guy, he even offered me a job. The food was good but was it worth it's price? Nope.

Ambiance Better Than Food

We ate at Brown's recently. It was a warm summer night, so we sat on the patio which was very nice. The inside of the restaurant looked very inviting as well. I had a cowgirl (or was it cowboy) salad to start, which was quite bland. There was a total of TWO quarter pieces of date in it. Not much else in it either...It was pizza special night, so we had the pizza. The margherita pizza was quite tasty, although the presentation left something to be desired. My husband had some kind of bbq chicken pizza which he saidwas also tasty. All in all, an okay experience, but far from stellar. One thing which really surprised me was the bathrooms, which were clean, but tiny and with clearly no attention to detail. Very utilitarian. I might go back, but am certainly in no rush to do so. The food did not leave me craving for more...

Everything was fine but a bit generic
By kells of yaletown (27 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, July 5, 2009 - 10:59pm [Dine in]

I had a tuna dish and while it sounded delicious it didn't quite live up to the description, the cowgirl salad that went with it however was rather tasty. My friends were mostly disappointed with their meals, once again it wasn't that it was terrible it was just not that great. The service was fine although there was five of us and the table was a bit cramped but the next size up was a table for ten so we opted to be squashed in.

I wouldn't say not to go there as the menu did sound nice however there just wasn't much character as it had the same feel as a lot of other similar restaurants in the area.

Eat in Richmond like you are downtown

In an suburb strangely devoid of many top-notch eating options, Browns shines out as Richmond's beacon of civilised dining. The long, low-lit space filled with modern tables is suited as much to business lunches as it is to post-work meals and drinks with dates. Now if you don't bring your own they have very sexy and relaxed blonde staff that confidently attend to a varied range of customers, from food-lovers drawn by the cute staff to tourists who found the place simply by driving past.
Andf then there are people like me that are attracted to good food, good wine and beautiful women.
Bottom line is this is the best place in Richmond for a fabulous meal in a sexy busy restaurant with service that is professional, attentive and friendly, food is inspired -good sized portions very reasonable prices and great house wines. just love it!

Loud, Dark and Below Average Food
By Eating-Fool of Richmond (6 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, May 30, 2010 - 1:40pm [Dine in]

Seriously, you can find local pubs with far better food and more ambience than this place has.
It was extremely noisy, quite dark and poorly laid out. The menu was a cross between Burger King, Earls and any Pizza joint you may care to name. Prices were high for the quality of food they served .... service was slow with inexperienced servers. In short: I felt 'ripped off'.......there i s no way I'll go back!

Gosh... such weird feeling when I come here.

I've bee here a couple of times. My friend lives in Richmond so I'm always trying different places. It's in a strip mall and what Browns offers to us is a very "Earls & Cactuc Club" wannabe style but in a much smaller format.

I do like the decore but there isn't enough of an "environment" to get me and the guys going. Food wasn't that great. I had a Pad Thai that honestly tasted like I cooked it myself.. (I'm a crappy cook and can always rely on recipe off the internet to try to impress).. My friend had the Cowboy Salad which he said was good but we at the end of our meal felt like moving on as soon as our meals were done. The place had lots of staff that liked to socialize so that didn't help.

Perhaps if it was twice the size, had a better menu (at least get original now), then it may be a bumpin place.. but I can't see myself wanting to come back here again.

Food is very ordinary, drinks watered down, and overpriced. Ambiance is dark and loud. Staff try hard to please but remain completely disorganized. I couldn't wait for me dinner to end. Not the best experience, perhaps they will improve. Don't waste your' money on their Mojitos. They completely lack flavor.

Why did we go here?

Submitted Friday, September 11, 2009 - 11:41am [Dine in]

SO the place is new in Richmond so we thought we'd give it a go. Looking down the menu I thought I'd try a burger but given they had Monday Pizza special I had one of those and another one for hte mrs. I have to say the pzza way bad.....Panago make decent Pizzas for $10 and evn a Ceaser's $5 pizza was better that the crap we were served. How do they do it? Open a restaurant in a pretty good location and then serve terrible food. They even have multiple locations!

This place is no Cactus club or Earls. Crap food mean we won't go bad. Drinks looked OK but I like to eat and drink so I'll skip the place from now on.

We were in Richmond and om our way back home to Delta we decided to syop over for a quick dinner. We were on a Steveston and pulled into the Irongate Plaza. Somehow we decided to visit the Browns Socialhouse. First impression was that the place was dark and very dim lighted.
Menu shocked us. There was hardly anything on it except burgers that would be eatable. We ordered pizza and was served in their own style which looked nothing like pizza. We did not even finished the dinner and after $45 in the hole we drove home cursing ourselves for making a poor choice to visit Browns Socialhouse. Never again... !!!

I am willing to give this place some time to sort out its kitchen, beacause the staff and ambiance is so badly needed in Richmond. I love the decor and the yaletown feel when you are inside. Our server was really good, and I enjoyed their drinks menu. The food was very ordinary. The chicken pasta I had sounded soooo good in the menu, but upon getting it there was no flavor to it, and it was a waste of a nice cheese. Overall not impressed with the food, but will go back in 3 months and see if they have improved.
