Better than it was before

The predecessors of this place were terrible. I remember tasting detergent powder in a dish served to me back then. Now it has improved, both decor and service. Tried it a couple of times and it was fine, the ox tongue and steak, etc. Parking may be tough due to limited space. Toilets are clean.

Average HK Cafe

Never liked these ;places as they just have too many choices and doesn't do any of them very well. Chose the E-fu noodles soup with chicken. Bland soup and it looked like they just stir fry some chicken and then put it right onto the soup/noodles. Should of know better and stuck with the steak/pork chop rice combos that they have. Good value at $8-9 with drink. Wouldn't go back but if you like HK Cafe's, it'll be good for you.

Overhyped

Food: it was ok. Noodles with fish balls and slices were good, thai chicken style rice was terrible - chicken cubes had so much fat on them that I just took all of the chicken out. Noodle with beef in black bean sauce tasted a little off and was very greasy. Fried rice with beef was not bad. Overall, I've had much better at other HK cafes.

Service: very good but almost overbearing - we were waiting for a fourth member of our group and they asked us 5 times to order. Everything else was ok.

Value: expensive for a HK cafe and costs an extra $1 for cold drinks. I don't think the value is there for this place.

Ambiance: it looks quite nice when you first sit down but then you realize it is just as bad as other HK cafes. The place is crusted with dust and the shakers need a good cleaning. We were also seated by the kitchen door/bar and there was a funny smell in the air. I think if we sat elsewhere, it wouldnt have been so bad. Parking was atrocious - we had to park 3 lots away down the street and people were double-parked in the lot.

Overall, I don't think I'll ever come back - there are just so many other cafes that have better food and better value. We tried to like it but just couldn't.

Decent late night snack place

Came here for a late dinner at around 9pm. They had a special late night dinner menu and food was pretty cheap, $6-$7 including a drink ($1 more for a cold drink).

They had a large selection of food, which was pretty decent in quality for the price paid. Their regular menu looks a little too expensive for the quality, but I would come back again for their late night specials.

Mrs. C and I were near Richmond, and we decided to drop by to see whassup in da hood. BSH seemed like a good choice, and in we scampered. We called some friends to join us. The restaurant has very modern décor and the place looked like a HK version of Cactus Club. We were seated in a comfortable booth, and scanned the menu. Lots of choices!

We ordered dong café and some sizzling platters. I had the lamb cubes, which featured boneless lamb and mushrooms in BBQ sauce on a bed of fried onions, with fries on the side. Mrs. C had a gigantic T-bone steak with mashed potatoes, and our friends had another T-bone but with spaghetti, rack of lamb and spaghetti, and ribs with mashed potatoes. All were reported to be good, and the side soups (borscht and lobster bisque) were delish.

The service was hit and miss, since we didn’t have an assigned server for our table, and some of the staff seemed more intelligent/responsive than others. The ambience was great, and even the w/c was cleaner than expected.

A very satisfying experience was had by all. Because our meals were combos, the price came out to about $15 a head, so it wasn’t too pricey.

We’ll be back.

Boston Steakhouse is really close to where one of my friends live, so we've been there quite a few times. It's a HK fusion style steakhouse, so the way the meat is cut and cooked is a bit different. If you order one of the combos on the menu, you will get soup, the entree and a side, and a drink ($1 extra for cold drink). It's really good value considering most of the combos are about $11-$20. I love their soup (the borscht is slightly better than the bisque but they're both good). Sides are spaghetti / fries / mashed potatoes / rice / etc.

There are some really good choices for meat here. I love all of their lamb dishes (lamb cubes which come on a sizzling iron plate, lamb curry, etc). They also have stone grill type meals and you can often choose 2 or 3 different items to be cooked on the hot stone. Their steak is not my favorite. It lacks a bit of flavor unless you pour lots of sauce on it. They have a ton of sauces to choose from: peppercorn, beef gravy, mushroom, etc. With my meal I always get a HK style mixed coffee and tea - cold. It's delicious!

Overall this place is great value for low/medium price range eats. It's also open fairly late (like most asian restaurants in Richmond). Servers are polite and helpful with good knowledge of the menu and can speak English decently. This place is highly recommended!

Worst steak ever
By banany of Vancouver (37 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, August 19, 2007 - 3:20am [Dine in]

Boston Steakhouse is a Hong Kong style cafe. The steaks are kind of expensive for a Chinese restaurant as Chinese restaurants aren't exactly known for using high quality meats.

I ordered the Sterling Silver rib eye steak, which was $19.95. With the dinner you get a bun, soup, your meat, carbs, vegetables, choice of sauce, and a drink. If you want a cold drink it's an extra $1.

Normally I only like to eat steak at Morton's as I don’t eat steak often so when I do I want a good one. The reason I tried a steak here was because I had a rib eye at i-cafe, also a HK style cafe, recently and it was surprisingly tasty. I usually order my steak medium-rare, but thinking the meat wouldn't be too great I ordered my steak medium.

My steak was cooked rare, but that was ok. However, what wasn't ok was that my steak was by far the worst steak I have ever had; maybe even the worst piece of meat I've ever had. It tasted like cardboard and if it wasn't for the peppercorn sauce, I wouldn't have been able to eat the half of the steak I managed to swallow. Even with the sauce I could taste the blandness with each bite into the meat. I didn't even know steak could taste this bad. I know sometimes people describe food as cardboard, but I honestly and genuinely feel like the steak tasted like cardboard.

I always cut the fat off the sides of my steak and I'll sometimes chomp on it a bit for the flavour, but I won't swallow it. I decided to try this with the fat from my steak and even the fat was bad. How can steak fat taste bad??? It just doesn’t seem possible.

I had orange pop but I don't think it was real orange pop. It tasted like OJ and carbonated water with black pepper. Yes, I mean pepper as in pepper from a pepper mill. There were pepper flakes in my drink!

I think everyone who orders set dinners is supposed to receive a little ice cream treat at the end, but we didn't get ours. Perhaps it's because we don't speak Chinese.

Cash only.

Are You Kidding?

First impressions: shared parking lot in a strip mall, some stalls reserved for other businesses. Walk in, nice modern decor, seated fairly quickly. Prices are higher than other comparable Chinese "steakhouses" in Richmond...That's understandable as the decor is nice, hope the food is on the same level.

Hard to get the wait staff's attention as they are busy cleaning tables or chatting with someone who seems to be the manager. I order the $7.99 pork chop with rice and pepper sauce, my girlfriend orders calamari with a salad for the same price (both include a hot or cold drink). Calamari comes first, then my pork chop arrives a couple of minutes later (good timing).

The squid is deep fried and overcooked, as the batter is more brown than golden and the inside is tough and dry. My dish has two pork chops, rice and some boiled veggies. First I thought it was good since the pepper sauce was tasty. Then I find one pork chop is mostly fat! Total turnoff! The other piece has fat throughout thus hard to cut out the good meat. Ok, decided this is the last time we come here.

Also, the service is horrible. I left my empty hot tea cup by the end of the table and the waitress never refilled it. Wait staff were more interested in cleaning up and chatting with the manager than serving customers.

Overall, a poor choice to eat at. I don't expect great service at any Chinese owned restaurant but this one sets a new record for a low. Don't be fooled by the nice decor. There's lots of competition in Richmond...make a better choice.

Steak house? Sure they serve sterling silver beef but that doesn't make it a steakhouse. food wasn't good at all. My wife had the Ox tongue, large portion but the tongue wasn't cleaned properly. the outside membrane ( you can see the cow's taste buds)of the tongue was still there. I dont think anybody would still be hungry after seeing that and i'm of asian descent. haha i can't remember what i had. its that memorable.

Paying too much for bad attitude

Going to this place was the biggest mistake ever. I went with my family. The moment we stepped into restaurant, a waiter greeted us with "How many, do you have reservation?". We didn't reserve, as it was one of those, spur of the moment, let's go out for dinner, don't want to cook nights. The waiter, upon hearing our answer, walked away! Our eyes followed him as he wander into the almost empty restaurant looking for a table to seat us. He stops at the opposite side of the room and waves us over. We proceeded to the table beside where he was standing and sat down. And then things started to go downhill. The waiter started this half giggling laugh with a "What the f#$%" look on his face as he turned and looked at one of his co-workers. He then signaled to us that he wasn't intending to seat us at this table, but to another smaller table BEHIND him, where he was blocking the path to, with his body. So instead of politely asking my party to move to another table, he makes up this lame excuse that the table we have already sat down at is beside a window that's not sealed properly, so it could get cold. We complained about his attitude and another waiter served us for the rest of the night, and he was fine. However, one is enough to ruin it all. I'm never going back. And did I mention the food were typical HK cafe style that are way over priced.

Somewhat disappointed...

I've been to this restaurant several times throughout the last 2 years or so. I used to believe this was one of the best HK cafes there is in Vancouver in terms of quality. I understand there's a change in ownership (twice?). And every time I realize a drop in quality....most significantly the change in ownership 2 weeks ago. Rumors says that it is from the owner of another HK Cafe called California...which has always been poorly managed. The menu changed, the price changed...and certainly the quality has significantly drop when I went there last week. Will I go back again? Probably not.

Wasn't impressed

I went to this place after raving comments from a friend, and agreed to go when I happened to be in the area.
The food was good, but it wasn't impressive! The place was packed so it took our waitress a long time if we needed something like, say, a fork, or a glass of water. This restaurant has a nice atmosphere, and it's a good place to go eating with friends, however, they over-price their food too much!

If you are in the Richmond area, it's a nice place to stop by, but I wouldn't recommend it.

New manager, old staff all fired?
By chubbybear of Richmond (4 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, January 9, 2009 - 10:11pm [Dine in]

They must have changed managers because before the winter holidays of 2008, I was a regular at this resturant. I came here every week, and recieved two dollars off everything, because the manager recognized me and my party.
I returned recently, and nocticed that all but two of the old staff remain. My favourite waiters were also missing. I nocticed that the new manager used to own a bakery, I remember her because of her tendency to never smile at guests. The food is down-hill. I ordered the Beef tounge hot plate, one of my favourites. with lobster bisque and H.K. style milk tea on the side. First of all, as soon as my hot plate arrived, I nocticed that I couldn't smell the usual flavour the particular dish gave off. Second, the beef toungue looked and tasted like it had been boiled instead of seared. Also, the beef toungues were not seasoned properly, as it would have been, so i had to order extra sauce. The ambience was poor because alot of people ended up screaming over each other. Many of the new waiters and waitresses, were very in expirienced and arrogant, they took forever to respond. Some even brought the wrong orders to our table. At the end of my dinner. The food was heavily over-priced. I will not return again.

Best of its kind!

Boston is the best HK-Western (can you still call it fusion?) style cuisine in town! Considering the quality and quantity of food you're getting, the value is incredible. Although, I don't recommend that you venture too far from the classics like steak or porkchop rice, cuz some of their experimental dishes should probably be kept in the lab, lol. The drinks are good (redbean icecream? yumz), the soup is never that bad either (creamy stuff or the red stuff). My personal fav. is the mixed "pa" combo, where you get porkchops and chicken chops rawr! SO "RICE" and a side (fries, spaghetti, rice etc.), side drink (cold lemon tea anyone?), and the typical app. soup (I prefer the red stuff).

My favourite HK style food in richmond

This is my favourite lunch hangout in richmond. For $6, it includes a decent size meal and a drink. The menu is in english so my non chinese reading friends can order there. The seats are comfortable and air circulation is good (doesnt stink afterwards).

Their "bake pork chop on rice" and "bake cod on rice" are one of the best in town. Must try.
