Tried their Dim sum for lunch on a weekday. A good, somewhat lighter alternative to all of the meat filled ones. If you stay away from ordering too many deep fried items, you may not feel as bloated than the regular dim sum places. Choices are limited to about 2 dozen items. Some special noodles dishes during the week at $6.95.
First of all, I have been to this place since its opening and I am more than qualified to voice my opinion.
The quality of the food has most evidently deteriorated throughout the years as they have changed chefs many times to cut costs.
If you guys have tasted the food 5-10 years ago, you would not give the same reviews today.
The dim sum is really one of the most noticeable disappointments. The ingredients are not as fresh and falls apart easily.
The service throughout the years has also worsened. Whether you are at the Richmond location or Vancouver location, both service and food is just as bad.
It's very sad to see this place turn out like this but perhaps the rent of such large spaces have finally caught up to them and they have no choice but the cut cost. But no matter what, Restaurants should never cut cost in quality.
Recommendation: Don't go to Bo Kong. Try this vegetarian restaurant in Vancouver on Fraser St. You'll see what good Cantonese vegetarian food should be.
I really like this place. I've been 3 times, and the food is delicious. I like the wonton soup a lot. I generally get dishes that are similar to lemon chicken and sweet and sour pork. Maybe it's just the things I order, but it seems like the food is probably really really high calorie. So I wouldn't go with someone who was on a diet, because I don't know what they would eat.
The service is great. The staff all pay attention to everyone's table, so you are never without water or tea. Food arrives in 10-15 minutes.
I will definitely go back there more than once.
The pepper steak is by far my favorite item on the menu, but, in traditional Chinese style, I've sampled many of the largely portioned dishes and have generally been very pleased with all of them.
There is definately a language barrier with the service staff, but it isn't too big a deal, you just have to make sure they understand the order.
They should replace the tea pots, however. I've never seen anyone pour tea (including the waitresses) without spilling it all over the place haha.
Quiet atmosphere, great setting for a serious business lunch, a quiet/dignified celebration etc, and deeeelicious food.
My extended family chose Bo Kong mostly because it is vegetarian, but also because the dishes mold itself after meat/poultry/seafood dishes. (presumably, carnivores find tofu more appetizing when it looks like food we like. and/or vegetarians too like to try and fool their stomach and mind.) People who would like this food: people who want to eat meat but are forced onto an all tofu and vegetable diet.
The wonton was undercooked. Kudos for making dishes 'look' like carnivore dishes. but the only difference were the sauces. They could have saved a lot of time by putting out a pile of (differently textured) tofu and having a variety of dipping sauces. That being said, the vegetarians in the fam. seemed to enjoy.
As well, i was put off by the slightly false advertising. I asked the server if the "fresh oyster" was really seafood, she exlained it was an oyster mushroom. ok, fair enough, but fresh??!!
value rating is unknown as I was a guest.
This place rocks. Food is constantly great. Best wonton soup around. Love the gluton plate as well as the shredded ginger and veggie friend rice. To bad this place is not open past 9 because I would be eatting there food more often. I can't believe there is so much garbage chinese food considering where we live. Refreshing to have a gem like this.
The food was really really delicious. We had the bamboo thing with broccoli, a stir-fry noodle dish, and a tofu/eggplant hotpot that had a savory sauce. The server also gave us free cookies and nuts because the dessert items we wanted weren't available.
