Located right on the Bayview pier in Steveston, the Blue Canoe offers an unparalleled view of the river. The newly renovated space has a 92-seat upscale-casual style restaurant & lounge as well as a seasonal 100-seat patio space.
I had heard so much about the Blue Canoe; however, was disappointed with my meal. I had ordered fish and chips. The batter was overdone and the portion was small. My friend ordered a pesto pasta with prawns which was very good but they initially brought out the child's portion. They quickly brought out the adult's meal when they realized their mistake. I feel we paid too much for the little amount of food on our plates. The ambiance however, was wonderful. For this reason alone, I would be willing to go back and try something else on their menu.
We had just gotten home, when friends came to see us and take us out for dinner! Well who is going to say no to that. the restaurant we had planned on going to was closed on Mondays! Rats! Hubby suggested we try the Blue Canoe...good choice.! We thought about sitting outside as they have heaters and blankets for snugglling, but finally realized it was just a little too cool. The inside of the restaurant is great, mirrors on the walls mean you don't have to turn around to see the boats and water view. Wait staff were wonderful, suggesting wines for us. Food was good, tried their Ahi Tuna, some of us for the first time. It was great! Could have been a little more avacado in the sandwich, but it was such a little detail. Deserts are absolutely decadent......leave room!!!
My wife, myself, and another couple headed down to check out the Blue Canoe after hearing some good things recently. We had a terrific time as the server was engaging and their food was fantastic. We tried the salmon, the seafood linguine, the halibut and the steak. All were done extremely well. Very nice to see this kind of quality in Steveston.
The sunset didn't hurt either. Being able to sit on their patio in a lively spot, with heaters on for the ladies, TV's on for the boys, and the sunsetting as a backdrop....well obviously the restaurant has nothing to do with that, but it certainly made our night.
Even though the food and views are great, that's where the positives end. The portions are extremely small for what you pay. Now under most circumstances of finer dining, as casual as the Blue Canoe is, this could be over looked since it does cost money to make good food.
WHAT CANNOT BE OVERLOOKED HOWEVER, IS THE POOR SERVICE FROM THE MANAGEMENT DOWN. The place is understaffed and even on the busier nights, the owner who is often inhouse can be seen sitting around or wandering around not helping out is overworked staff. The staff there often look stressed out and can be overheard complaining about their jobs and the lack of help.
If you do go, you will pay for an overpriced, extremely small portion of food, that while is really tasty, is not at all worth the value considering the service. Save your money and go somewhere else. There are serveral warm restaurants that offer better service and value for the same quality of food.
2.5 stars...only cause the food and view. Otherwise it would be 1 star.
This restaurant was recommended to me by one of my friends who really enjoyed the lobster butter steak.
I ordered from their daily fresh catch menu, bacon wrapped ling cod with roasted potatoes and vegetables. My husband ordered the steak but without the lobster butter sauce since he is not big fan of seafood. We also had the calamari for appetizer, corn bread on the side and the dessert of the day.
The crust on the calamari was extremely hard and had a fishy smell, but the sauce was good. The ling cod was overcooked and dry, the steak was ordinary and tasted like something we can buy from Costco. The thyme scalloped potatoes were crusty and dry but with overflowing amount of butter taste. Corn bread was the only thing that was good. The dessert had an elaborate description but it definitely did not live up to its description. It's basically a tasteless vanilla mouse with a supposedly cinnamon spiced apple mouse (tasted like apple sauce from del monte).
The view was great but the restaurant was overpriced for what was served to us.
Have gone to the Blue Canoe several times since it has opened and have noticed dramatic improvements in everything since then.
To start off, food overall is good, but some dishes can be lacking. I highly recommend the chicken drumettes, and the burger is pretty good as well.
I'm not quite sure what is up with the servers there. Some days it is quite good, others we won't see our server for 30 minutes and have to ask another to get us what we need.
Food prices are expensive, however their beer selection is very good with a selection of great microbrews at reasonable costs.
Of course you can't go wrong with their great patio area. Now that summer is fading away, it'll be a shame not to be able to use it.
Love it !Love it! Love it! Food was amazing, from the chowder to the Tuna and the canoe drummettes. The steaks for the dinner were the best I ever had!! Save room for the Lemon Pie, WOW!! serves two.
The room is fun , energetic and what a view!! Windows open right up to the water view. Lots of regulars I think, as the staff and management seem to know everyone.
Service was friendly, imformative and fun. Good wine list, some very intersting wines. This restaraunt did not miss a beat.
Just amazing to find such a great restaraunt by chance walking one day in steveston, we will be back and often.
PS My friends loved the " Sunburn" martinis
Well I've checked out the new hot spot in Richmond twice now and have been dissapointed both times. This place offers a great view with not much else. The last time I went was with 3 friends and our bill came to over 200 dollars with tip. This restaurant is much overpriced for the value. I had a salad with a most strange dessing on it (horseradish maybe) and the sliders. Nothing special about either. We saw our server three times during the night. Once to take our order, once to deliver the food, and once to give us the cheque. twice we flagged down a server who wasn't even ours to get more drinks. If the prices (especially the wine) were dropped this place would have great value, but I can't justify spending that much money for just a view.
There are definately other restaurants in Steveston I would rather spend that kind of money on. Sure I won't be on the patio but I know I can count on the food and service.
So I have heard from about 20 people in the last few weeks that I have to go to the Blue Canoe, a new place in Steveston, right on the water.
So I finally went last night, and it was just that. Went there a girlfriend of mine from Langley just for light snacks later on in the evening .
We ended up sharing 3 appies. Ginger seared tuna was the best by far-exccelent presenation and flavour, make that entreee size and I would be back every day. We also had the drummettes that are really really good.
I really liked there wines by the glass selection. Could use a few more whites by the glass this time of year. Service was very pleasant and prompt and I just love the feel the place has. Good music too.
My friends were right, I had to go to the Blue Canoe, and I will be back.
Went to the Blue Canoe this past weekend and was totally blown away. The place was packed and just humming. I have walked by a few times and seen the place full and tried to get in but could not.
Went with my girlfriend and her friends from out of town this past Monday, we all had an amazing time. Food is just great, service was friendly, effeciant and informative and I just love the atmosphere, great loacation right on the water.
We all shared the Nacho's and the calamari, we all thought the calamari was just amazing, not the same old flour tossed/ fried frozen rings with red onions!! They had this corn type salsa on top- and it was just perfect.
Barbeque salmon was just out of this world, best my wife has had at any restaraunt at any time she said, really nice presentation as well. Perfectly cooked vegetables could not have been done any better.
I had the 10 ounce ( ? ) steak that was topped with a lobster butter cream. If I could just get a bowl of that lobster cream sauce I would pay a kings ransom.
My wifes friends had halibut and chips ( out of towners wanting fish and chips when in Steveston - suprise. ). They both loved it!
They have a really nice selection of beer and a very interesting cocktail list. Go for the backporch lemonade! WOW We didn't end up having any wine but a nice list for sure I would say about 80 wines.
Only thing I would say is the washrooms are a little small, I though I was in the wrong room for a second but no big deal. We also had to wait for the bill for a bit to long in my mind but I am fussy that way.
Overall I would say this place has just nailed it on all cylinders. We will be back no doubt.
I have lived in Richmond all my life, and was pretty excited to hear that a new modern restaurant was coming to Steveston that would be open later than 8pm with a perfect location.
My boyfriend and I decided to go to lunch one day during the week during a non-busy time to really enjoy the atmosphere and from previously working in this industry it was not a peak time therefore we knew the service should be good.
Although the view was amazing, the servers were hired based on looks they clearly had no experience or intelligence besides that, which is too bad. When we asked for water the girl brought them one was over flowing and the second was less than half full, the girl had no idea what the specials were, nor did she know what was in anything or what were in the drinks.
We ordered Halibut and chips and a crab avacado sandwich, I had the fish and chips and it was not fully cooked, I ended up being very sick for the day. My boyfriend like most men can eat alot and was looking forward to a hearty filling sandwich and he asked the girl, was it a big portion she said yes, when she brought it out we both laughed at the sandwich both halves combined were smaller than my hand, and I have tiny hands.
For a sandwich, fish and chips one lemonade and one ceaser it came to over $50.00. The service was slow and useless, the bill took forever and she was no where to be found when it was time to pay.
I have talked to people who have dined here and the majority of them have experienced the same, horrible food & service and not worth the money.
The big excitment for a brand new place and what a waste of space.
Visiting mom again and she was recommended by a friend to come out and try this place. We heard it was new and fantastic so why not?
Went for lunch and service was pretty bad and slow. Not a big deal for us since we like to take our time but we saw other tables being terribly neglected.
They had a simple one page menu of west coast style food.
I had the calamari which was a bit soggy. Ravioli pasta was ok.
Maybe this works for the younger trendier folks since it seemed to have a more upscale feel where it focused more on the scene rather than food standards.
We loved the view though and we'll try some other place in the area next time.
I agree with the previous poster in regards to the salmon & avocado tartare. The salmon did not taste fresh and it was simply not good.
My friends had the ravioli (which was bland) and the halibut & fries (which was ordinary). I think the only good thing about our meals was the fries.
However, the patio is great during the summer to catch some sun while having a few drinks and there's even blankets available at each table for when it gets chilly.
It's always nice to have a fresh-face in historic Steveston and this place is very appealing however their prices seem rather ambitious. I suppose they're trying to capture the new-yuppie $$ - however Steveston/Richmond is still the burbs and Yaletown pricing is inappropriate.
This dishes were nice and tasty (kinda like a Cactus Club/Earls/Joeys) but nothing exceptional. Stil kinda neat place to go and socialize (blankets for deck patrons are a nice touch)
Probably hippest new spot in Steveston
Was here a few weeks ago with friends, hoping for a nice lunch.....
The place itself is nicely renovated from what it was before and it stands out from the other restaurants on the wharf.
so hopes for a nice lunch was high... ordered our food, took maybe 30 mins for couple of sandwiches to be prepared in a less then half full restaurant. hmmmm
once we go our food, we all looked at each other and laughed cuz for we were expecting a lil bit bigger portions than what we received. The slider wasn't good either. patty from my point of view was deep fried.
so we left still hungry and unsatisfied.
NIce new Restaurant in Steveston that's about it.
So I went up with the famile to checkout the buzz.
First the good - The ceasar salad was good and big, though clearly from a bottle, maybe some garlic added. The salmon was good though clearly forgotten as it appeared about ten minutes after everything else. We tried vigorously to get someones attention but were obviously ignored until the salmon apeared.
Now the bad, 3 entrees and 3 appies were tasteless and tiny, like a $200 11 course meal tiny. I could go into detail, but I will not as the kinks will hopefully get worked out once the ridiculously busy summer season on the docks is over.
The service was inept, were told there was no specials, than the server 2 tables down recites specials, so I ask again. "Oh sorry I just started and did not know them. Well than soberup, she rankedof booze I had poured her all afternoon at my work and take off the shade inside. Seriously where is management to cut stumbling servers. My second visit differeent server same cluelessness.
There is one (latin looking) girl that is on the ball,t she always serves on the window and prime dockside. Memo to self make resos in her section.
Love the feel and the concept but the menu looks like a ripoff of almost every other mainstream restaurant. Ahi Tuna, calamari, pastas etc...
If the price were in line with the calibre of food I'd give a higher rating but they really need to fine tune not necessarily the menu but the quality of food. Ahi Tuna tasted ultra soggy on a bed of mixed greens, calamari tasted bland and the apple crumble wasn't what I expected. Seemed like some sponge cake or bread at the bottom of a crumble?
Bill was just over 100$ between my date and I and I think it should be in the 60-70$ range.
The patio however had an unbeatable view and they'll do well with the tourists for sure.
Service ended up being somewhat satisfactory but they seemed understaffed ine the serving dpartement. Three hostesses and we were never assigned a server. Waited nearly 25mins before we got a drink order taken.
When will Steveston have a truly great modern style resturants so we don't have to go downtown for it?
Have been many times, and each and every time the food, service and views improve! Great burgers, fish and chips, and the new seafood fresh sheet make for delicious dining choices. Good wine list, and mixed drinks are fine! The owner/manager, Jim, makes us feel very welcome. Desserts are yummy - especially the lemon square! This is our favourite casual Steveston restaurant. We love sitting outside in the summer, and like the warm fireplace in the winter!
Although most people head to Steveston in search of great seafood, I have to give a shout-out to Blue Canoe's lemon meringue pie. It is quite honestly the best lemon meringue pie I have EVER tasted. It arrives at your table as an unsuspecting, whole pie and once you have your first bite, it is game over. The meringue is to die for and the lemon custard is unparalleled. Perfect for sharing with your hot date or for ordering as take-out when you have a bad break up!
Was there last week for dinner. Awesome location and waitress was superb but in the end it is the food that matters and it wasn't what I expected. CAB tenderloin tips = meat was raw (I am a big fan of rare steaks but this was cold raw) and fried onions were cold. Ahi Tuna = no ginger taste and the clowslaw tasted aged. Clams, Mussels, and Fries (Spanish) = was ok but kind of bland and sausages could have been seared a little instead of just boiled. Crab Avacado Sandwich = Crab tasted old, bacon was cold like out of the fridge, bread was very chewy, and fries tasted and looked like fried with very old oil. Maybe I am too picky but I should be considering the location and price. Unfortunately I won't be back.
