Small sushi, Japanese take-out place located in Broadmoor Mall. Tables are located right in the mall for dining in.
Not a huge sushi fan, but Aoi definitely does it right. Had dynamite rolls with california rolls, and a chicken terriyaki. Best terriyaki ever, but the rolls were quite mushy and greasy. Service could've been much better, no fluent English speakers which was kind of a let-down!
Definitely try this out if you're a sushi fan...if not, don't bother..was not anything spectacular.
I go to this restaurant about once a month if I want westernized sushi that is reasonably priced, not greasy and served in a nice portion.
The vegetable soup is very large and only a few dollars. The sushi comes in a large variety including things like spinach! They have a very large variety of options for a little bit of money.
The service is always very slow here so make sure you go with someone who is interesting to talk to or when you have a lot of time for dinner or lunch.
The food is delicious here! All the terriyaki chicken is very good! The terriyaki sauce is even more amazing!! The service was reeally quick and fast and my family and i were very satisfied after the meal. There are many choices to choose from and my mouth waters just thinking about them, i can't wait till I go there again!!!
This is an odd little place in a mostly-empty mall which is apparently awaiting redevelopment.
We ate here last week during a softball tournament at nearby Steveston-London. It was not bad - nothing fancy or exceptional, but pretty good sushi and teriyaki, etc. Another tournament this weekend had us return to Aoi for lunch, but what a mistake! I can't believe that it has changed so much in one week. There was a new woman working there and I have a feeling it has changed hands.
To start with, what was with the bun sitting on top of the cash register? It looked like the proprietor was about to eat it and then got too busy and just set it on top of the register and forgot about it. It was there the entire time we were.
We ordered one chicken teriyaki box, one beef teriyaki box and a dynamite roll and sat down at a table in the mall. The miso soup came right away, I mean RIGHT AWAY. It was barely tepid. Before we knew it, our boxes were set before us. It was immediately obvious why the food came so quickly - C O L D and G R E A S Y !!!!
The rice and teriyaki were at room-temperature. The chicken teriyaki was tiny, I would say about 1/3 of a thigh. The tempura was absolutely oozing oil that looked like it came out of a crankcase, it was so brown. The batter was suspiciously textured and very dark in colour and when I bit into it I knew why. It had been pre-cooked and dunked in and out of the deep-fryer for service. Oh, it was nasty! The 3 little pieces of yam that accompanied the 1/2 prawn were sliced poker-chip thin. Can you say "cheap"? The dynamite roll, having a tempura prawn in the center, was equally inedible. Cali-rolls were fine.
Not cheap either. The meal, along with a can of iced-tea and a Jones soda, was $25.00
I don't think it will be long before Aoi is the next thing to perish inside Broadmoor Mall.
