Aji Taro offers many appetizers and entree (a la carte) selections including tempura, teriyaki, sushi and sashimi. All you can eat available for $14.95 (lunch / late night + $1.00 on weekend) and $18.95 (dinner).
Open 7 days a week: Monday to Friday: 5:00 pm to 2:00 am and Saturday, Sunday and Holidays: 11:30 am to 2:00 am.
We had heard a lot about this place and since we had not yet tried sushi in Vancouver, we decided to try this place before leaving. It was a last minute kind of event last week which fit perfectly into the ambience of this place, since it was all you can eat. Oddly enough, this sushi place is run by Chinese people, but as long as you can make it properly I couldn't care less. We were mildly surprised by the value, esp. being ayce. A decent variety to choose from, I would like to say the nigiri sushi was quite good, but the service was a little lacking. Food takes too long to come and servers just kind of stand in their spot and don't come to your table. Their prices are not cheap so I would expect a little more.
It's been about 2yrs or so since I've had all-you-can-eat sushi, and months going since I had sushi. I could've done without eating late but a hungry friend and gf pressured me in. Thought we would give this restaurant a try considering the late night.
It wasn't particularly busy when we walked through at around 10:30pm on a Sunday. We were seated immediately and picked out all the common AYCE dishes. The dishes came out quick and all the hot dishes came out hot, and all the cold dishes came out cold. Other than the 2 wings where the meat looked like it had suffered some prior freezer burn and tasted "old" and the bland peanut sauce for the Go-Mae, it was fine from chopstick to stomach. The teapot was refilled several times though it was tepid rather than hot.
Contrary to many prior reviews I thought the service was satisfactory. There were waitresses continually walking back and forth clearing out our empty dishes. They named every dish that came to the table and set it down nicely. Polite too with what looked to be the female manager, who told us to take our time after giving us the bill.
The decor is typical where it would leave you mildly bored.
Decent enough, though from all indications, it's probably better to dine here when it isn't busy.
I was on my way back from a quick business trip to Calgary and I needed sushi as an antidote for my visit to the redneck ramparts. Mrs. C and some friends picked me up at YVR and suggested sushi. We went to AT only because it was the first one we saw.
The place looked nice enough, and we were seated right away, but the server seemed to be on a mission to annoy. Examples: I asked for water, and was told I wouldn’t like the water there, since the recent snow had caused black spots in the water. She suggested I buy mineral water. “Wait a minute”, I said, “You just poured us tea. That has water, right?” She had no answer. Later I asked what kind of beer was on tap. She did not know what that was, so I explained. I was then told Asahi beer was the best beer, so I didn’t need this other kind of beer. After a bit of back and forth I gave up and had my tea. It wasn’t a language issue, since the server spoke English like a native and she understood Cantonese when it was spoken to her. It was like she wanted to be a jerk.
We skipped the AYCE and ordered a selection of sushi and sashimi. The sushi was non-lethal, except for the spicy tuna roll, which was too hot to be eaten, and seemed to have been made with spoiled fish. We left that one behind. The rest of the sushi all looked like it was not very fresh. In this town we expect a high standard from sushi places, and this restaurant didn’t come close. We reluctantly ate our food, but in the parking lot all we joked about food poisoning. So it’s fair to say it was not the best dining experience for all concerned. Will I be back? Not a chance.
I understand that you can't be too picky when dining at a restaurant that offers so much food for so little money. But seriously, what this place serves is an insult to its customers. When I came here with my boyfriend and family, 3 of 4 of us got sick afterwards. I'm sure they don't practice food safe. Leaving everything room temperature until ready to serve is not right. Triple deep-frying does not taste good and can't be good the body either.
Servers/cashiers are rude. Don't know why I've been here twice, but I will never return. For $20/person, I'd rather eat less, but eat well.
Food: although AYCE places all tend to be the same, this place was just not as good. Gomae was not that great, salad had big clumps of the stem and everything else was just standard. I also found the menu to be quite limited.
Service: Waited for quite some time at the door before being acknowledged. Servers hard to flag down. At least I didn't have to bus my own table though!
Ambiance: Like any other AYCE/chinese-owned place. Nothing special.
For the price I paid and the food I received I would say this place is not worth it to return to and will continue to scour the lower mainland for a great AYCE place to go to!
Aji taro used to be a great AYCE sushi restaurant and we went there often. A few months ago we went there on a busy night at about 8ish and were seated in the corner on the right side of the restaurant. We ordered AYCE and about 20% of our first round order arrived after 15-20 minutes. After that, nothing else came. We tried to get the attention of the waitress, but nobody ever seemed to even come near our table due to it's location in the far corner. After waiting about an hour, we managed to get one waitress to come to our table. We decided to just re-order everything and put in a second round of orders. After waiting another 20 minutes or so, nothing came. We asked the same waitress to check on the food and she said it was coming. This went on several times and no food showed up. Finally one of us had to go so we all decided to leave. This was about 2 hours later.. The cashier knew of our situation because she said a quick "sorry", but still stuck us with the full bill. We were all still hungry, so I was quite angry that they're making us pay the full AYCE price. However because my friend had to leave, we didn't bother arguing with them. This is the only time in my dining out experience where I did not leave a tip.
The food at Aji Taro is not terrible, but unfortunately we didn't get to eat much of it, and we won't be returning to this restaurant.
I am not going to lie, I have been to Aji Taro in the past and didn't have such an unpleasant experience as the reviewers here described. So I decided to give it a second shot the other night.
I usually don’t have such high standards for food, especially AYCE, but this time around Aji Taro disappointed. I went like at 10 pm and the food was extremely bland. The gyoza was a joke, and the portions of salmon and tuna nigiri were tiny and tasted old. When I asked the waiter about the freshness of the ingredients, she simply didn’t respond (although she clearly heard me).
I think what continues to draw people to it is its late hours. If it were not for the fact that it is open until late (2 am), I don’t think many would go. Better go to somewhere else and get good quality sushi for the same price.
I probably eat here once every year, and the food quality has decreased overtime.
This will probably be my last visit.
We chose the 23.95 all you can eat package, and tried out their toro/hamachi sashimis. Not fresh at all. The salmon/tuna/hokkigai were at it's usual acceptable freshness. Ordering the kitchen items were worse, their tempura was definitely re-fried. There was basically two layers of the batter, one soggier than the other and the yam/veggies/prawns weren't even piping hot. Another item which was recommended to order was their barbecue squid, when it came it was hard and the sauce was cold. I would say the only items that turned out decent was their mango california roll and their unagi sushi. When we turned around to check the sushi kitchen, we saw trays and trays of rolls pre-made which made my stomach turn because i had a few of those pre-made rolls.
Sometimes people say we can't expect much from AYCE places, but with 23.95, I can probably go to Richmond sushi or another restaurant that serves regular menus.
This place inside was quite nice inside and pretty neat. The food was great, wide selection. My favourite of the night was their sashimi. They give you decent pieces and it was just tastey enough to make me salivate remembering about it. Nothing seemed at all lacking and the bad reviews really don't make sense to me. The first waitress was a touch rude but I'm guessing it was end of her shift (it was also after 11PM), the next male server was great. I like that they are open until 2AM. I will be def returning :)
i wouldnt mind coming here again, thats if i cant decide where to go. i dont care much about service as long as i get what i ordered. the thing that bugs me is that they dont have toro (my favourite sashimi) but thats ok. Theres nothing much i can say about this place, it's decent.
Went with my girl friend on a saturday night, around 8pm. Surprisingly, half the place was empty! Yet, we still had to stand around the entrance for 5 minute before they could prepare a table for us.
When we finally were seated, they put us right infront of the kitchen at a table that was barely bigger than an A4 poster. I noticed a couple of the bigger tables beside the windows were empty and asked who I believed to be the manager if we could sit at one of those instead. Without thinking, she replied that those tables were all reserved. The restaurant started to fill up after my first order arrived. A young couple came in and asked for a table, and were given the table beside the window that I've asked for earlier. That couple did not have a reservation, because I overheard what they were saying. I understand a lot of places tries to keep bigger tables open for bigger groups and tends to give small parties tables that are barely sufficient. However, lying by saying the tables were reserved when in reality they weren't, is just ridiculous.
Also, we had missing food orders, and the servers were reluctant to serving customers, and were anything but friendly.
The garbage dump is located at the end of the parking lot with the lid openned. Good luck if you have to park beside it. The inside of the restaurant was equally disgusting. Floor was not clean with traces of food everywhere. Seats and counter tops were dusty and sticky. Washroom, well, let's just say, hold it in if you must.
I weren't expecting anything special from an AYCE place, but this one doesn't even try! Most of the hot dishes were over cooked/fried, then left on the counter until cold before it got to me. The protions were small, really small. Sushi were soggy and tasteless. Sashimi were either frozen to solid, or looked like left over scraps.
I used to be a regular customer at Aji Taro couple years back, but will now swear to never go back.

After 2 years of absence, I went back to Aji Taro on Wed. night around 10:30. The late night starts at 10pm and open till 2am for $11.95.
As my seat was near the entrance, I was able to watch how the waiter/esses handle the line up. There have been always a line up at least until when I left around 11:30. However, they don't seem to care how long customers wait. They only go talk to the party in front of line, not all parties. I wonder why they don't take names and number in party, so they can just sit down till their name being called.
Here, we fill out an order sheet by yourself. I actually prefer this style over waiter/esses taking orders by their PDA devices, since I can know if my order is too much or too little, and I don't have to take up their time reading each items that I want to order.
My sake (salmon) and maguro (tuna) nigiri were really dry. I saw them making a bunch of them at one time, and covering with wet cloth. I guess sushi has to be made to order, or it gets dry.
The selection of food was better than average, but they tend to be luke warm.
My ocha (tea) was way weak, almost plain hot water. My BBQ ribs and yakitori (chicken skewers) were pretty good, but too bad they were just luke warm. My chopped scallop rolls were good as usual.
Somethings bothered me were that I saw a cigarette package next to sushi plate piles behind the counter... In this restaurants, kichen and counter receive the order by print outs similar to cashier machine. When they deliver the food, I found one of them on top of the noodle bowl, being dipped in yakitori sauce....
After all, it seemed to me Ajitaro is just another average AYCE. Their best feature is staying open very late.
We made reservations a couple days prior, yet we waited for more than 15 mins. The servers were pretty nice. I did not like the dirty tea cups and glasses and dirty plates with left-over food still stuck to it. The table was sticky and there were still pieces of sushi under the table (since we were placed in one of those separate rooms that have connected seats). The oysters that we ordered were rotten since they smell funny. But I guess at least I only paid 12.75 for all-you-can-eat.
You decide if you should try it, but I know I may not go back.
Note this review is measured against AYCE sushi places. I know quality is not as good as a Japanese run place, but this is more than made up with the wide selection ang quantity.
Food - pretty decent AYCE fare. I like the fact teriyaki is served on a hot plate, though it could have a bit more sauce. Sunomono is good, noodles the right texture. Like most places though, they serve the oyter motoyaki on tin foil, which I dislike. Otherwise, not much to complain about.
Service - my partner and I went with the partner's brother and mother. We were there early on a Saturday, and was relatively quiet. I was quite impressed with the service, esp. considering past AYCE experience. All requests were promptly filled, they didn't toss food on the table, but rather served it. There were some smiles, and they even changed our plates. So pretty happy overall.
Value - it's 12.95 + $1 for weekends. This is about 2-3 dollars more than their competitors, yet you don't get more variety. So if there was a complaint about my meal, it would be this.
Ambiance - Overall, pretty clean. Did not get to see washroom, so no comment there.
Summary - one of the better AYCE places. Set your expectations right, and you won't be disappointed.
after dinner with my friends, all of us have a same conclusion: never go back to this place.we don't want to waste our money again. the food and service are poor, they seem not care about this. anyways, we hope they can improve it. only one thing they have a good location to attract people, plus, they use a short name and with letter A started, :-)
Aji Taro is definitely popular for its late night sushi being available until 2am. Furthermore, its location is unmissable, facing No 3 road with a bright red banner. Despite being in such a great location, it is a shame that Aji Taro is also popular for poor service and poor food.
I used to go here quite a bit for AYCE (mostly out of desperation on really late nights), however it just isn't worth it anymore. It usually takes some time before you can get a seat because of its "popularity" and the service will most likely be backed up.
The food does not taste fresh. Also, it isn't anything out of the ordinary for orders to go missing, forcing you to desperately try to flag down waitresses that are very well-trained in the art of avoiding you.
One time I was seated near the back where the washrooms are. This was the worst dining experience of my life. The food seeped in the foul aromas coming from the washroom and I just completely lost my appetite.
There are better AYCE late night places than this. If you have to go here, deny the seats near the back washrooms AT ALL COSTS!
I personally don't understand why Aji Taro has such a bad stigma attached to it around Richmond because every time I go there I leave more satisfied than I have with any other AYCE restaurants around town
The service is not the best but I always kind of expect that from AYCE restaurants, I swear a common trick they use is to not bring out 100% of what you ordered in attempts to cut back waste and cost, which is really off-code if you're trying to be an AYCE restaurant...
Nonetheless I'm very impressed by the fact that all teriyaki items come on a sizzling hot plate with delicious veggies on the side; the sashimi is just ok but I love the agadashi tofu

My bf and I just spent alot of money on fine dining the previous night but we were craving for sushi and it was late so we headed to aji taro for late nite AYCE cuz it was still open and relatively cheap. After taking the first bite on my salmon sushi i regretted my decision. Everything was literally groossss. The fish were not fresh at all. The rice for some reasons were DRY like it was leftover rice from yesterday. All i could taste from the agedashi tofu was powdery batter. The gyoza came soggy in a puddle of vinegar. If I was blind folded I wouldnt have known that the spicy salmon was salmon because all I could taste was something that was very spicy. Negitoro cone was not negitoro. It was negi-plain tuna with tiny traces of green onion. Chopped scallop was decent but clearly not too fresh. Fried calamari weirdly did not taste liek calamari...alot softer than expected...tasted like some sort of dough trying to mask as calamari. Short ribs were decent but too fatty. Unagi roll had microscopic pieces of unagi in them and lotsa rice. Oyster motoyaki was very "cute" cuz it was tiny~ had tons of filling but a tiny piece of oyster...and it was lukewarm at most. Miso soup, sunomono, tempura, california roll, dynamite roll and teriyaki chicken was decent. I guess I need not to clarify any further how disappointed I was. I don't like wasting food, but I found myself sitting at a table full of food half eaten and not wanting to put anything else in my mouth even tho I was still hungry. I felt like I wanted to throw up...
In terms of servce I guess it was decent. The manager promptly seated us and was quite polite. At some point during dinner when I was sitting at awe because I didnt know what to do with the food, she came by and asked if everything was ok. I said yes because I didn't want to tell her everything tasted awful. Other servers were bad tho...like they didn't want to be there. No smiles to be found.
Ambience...well the place is dirty. period.
this place is nothing special yet people still line up to get a table. That is truly something I don't get. The food isn't all that bad but theres no service. If you are really hungry for some decent sushi for all you can eat then this place os OK i guess. Fairly inexpensive.
I've given Aji Taro not one, but FOUR chances. Every time I go here, I always leave with a bad experience.I will NEVER go back again!
I went there for dinner today at opening (5PM) with two of my friends. We sat there at our table with only one waitress on the floor. When we were about to order, the waitress was busy talking to the counter cashier. A few minutes later, we got our order sheet.We had a vegetarian among us so she proceeded to order vegetarian friendly sushi. She requested that the vegetarian food be put on a separate plate, away from our non-vegetarian food that we ordered. A few minutes later the manager informs us that THEY USE THE SAME KNIFE AND CUTTING BOARD to prepare veggie and meat food. For those who haven't taken food safe, that's food cross contamination. People can seriously get sick from this. Of course, my friend opted out from eating anything there, while the rest of us proceeded to eat what we ordered.
Food - I ordered a chicken karaage (chicken wing) and it was bright pink inside. (This isn't the first time I've seen pink chicken at Aji Taro). The various sashimi we ordered was NOT fresh at all. It had a weird expired taste to them. The beef teriyaki was burnt beyond recognition and ebi sunomono was just half-*ssed. The sushi was the worst part. The rice was literally falling apart and none of the sushi pieces look like sushi at all! Overall the food quality was very poor.
Service - It was mediocre. Waitress kept on gawking (I mean literally STARING) at our table from afar. It made me feel really uncomfortable.
Value - Definitely not worth the value. The food was so bad that we just ate what we ordered and just left.
Ambiance - Just your typical Japanese restaurant.
