There was a wait, but once we were seated the food was delicious and plentiful -- and very inexpensive! Our service was brusk but acceptable, they forgot a few dishes and we had to re-order, but it was okay. I will definitely go here again. |

I had never heard of Toshi (and I have crazy foodie friends), so I wrongly assumed that these crowds were accumulating due to the lack of good Japanese restaurants along Main and/or cheap prices. Well, I ate there last night and am thoroughly happy and excited to report that Toshi's is always busy because IT IS FRIGGIN AWESOME!
My posse ordered: salmon/toro sashimi, gyoza, the house roll (prawn, cucumber, avacado, roe), negitoro maki, miso and a bowl of udon. I adored everything but the gyoza. They are deepfried, and I hate deepfried foods (except for Mars bars...and halibut...and doughnuts...and hot wings...and......).
My fellow Dinerhere-ites all agree that the food is great here, but I would like to emphasize how wonderful the staff are. First, there were five servers, and only about ten tables. This is a 2:1 ratio! Second, Toshi always has at least three sushi chefs working together, in addition to chefs in the back prepping hot dishes. Our items were at our table within five minutes of ordering.
I was also coddled by several of the middle-aged female servers because I whipped out my own chopsticks, along with their sleek bamboo carrying case. Little did I know that these cases are primarily used by schoolchildren...I really couldn't tell whether these jolly Japanese ladies were laughing with me or AT me ;) |

It was taking long. When we asked our server about our second order, she just snapped at us and said that we should have ordered everything at one time. We were shocked and her attitude ruined our dinner. It's sad. It could have been our favorite restaurant. |

But now, every single little aspect of this restaurant dropped. The food - do not expect a whole lot out of it. A time I ordered their salmon sashimi, they gave me tuna. When the server brought back the right dish, I found tons of weird sauce on it, which was not supposed to be there. The service was horrible. In fact, none of the servers asked me to refill my tea when they had nothing in hand. They just stood there staring into space. Big shock. Price is okay. But I don't think it's worth it. The restaurant itself... kind of messy. I saw a piece of sushi on the ground and no one ever bothered with it. Which kind of killed my appetite.
If you want to eat at somerwhere even better, I'd recommend Sushi Town in North Burnaby. |

Once the newspaper wrote it up and it got busy it lost some of it's luster.. Service is poor. Food quality has dipped. Up to 30 people waiting in line before the doors open. Sad what it has become. Even take out is a min 50 minute wait. Parking?? Oh my, that in itself is an issue. They do not have a lot for customer parking so it is either 16th Ave or Main and with the amount of people living in the area it can be hard to find a spot. Expect a block or two walk.... |

Still, on this occasion, I had to put up with some of the worst service and attention to detail that I have experienced. Ask for water, soya sauce or more tea and expect 20 minute waits. More than that, they brought out food which we didn't order and instead of apologizing, abruptly pull the food off the table as if we were part of a conspiracy. They are completely under-staffed and pretentious in attitude. To put this in context, I’ve had Dim Sum in Hong Kong, Mainland China as well as in California and more usually in Richmond and Vancouver. I have had Kimchi in Calgary and sushi in Vancouver.
For those in the mood for this type of experience, let me recommend you have Toshi represent Asia. |

I was hungry + in a hurry and knew that this 'sushi' place might not be the ticket. In all respects I was right. We were given weak service and speaking for myself left hungry after dropping $60 for 2 people including wine for 2. The salad was delicious but how could you screw that one up? Otherwise, poor value for money if we weren't going to have desert later |

I loved the box sushi, and the carmelized eggplant. It was so good. The value was also great and affordable. My only complaint is the waiting. I've pass there last week at around 6 pm and there is already a line waiting outside. I believe it opens at 5pm. So, my suggestion is to go there at like 4:45pm just to be on the safe side and have an early bird dinner! |

| Added Jun 14, 2009 by BigBossTong of vancouver (2 Reviews) Defenitely overrated My friends had told me great things about Toshi, so I was very excited to go. Above all, everyone kept mentioning how we'd have to arrive early because they have line ups out the door.
I was extremely disappointed with the entire dinner experience. We had to wait 45 minutes for our table of four. The servers were friendly enough, but they were unable to answer my questions in any detail.
That being said, our party ordered an assortment of sashimi, including the tuna otoro, or the belly of the tuna which is supposed to be extremely delicate and flavorful. Toshi's excuse for tuna otoro was embaarrassing. It smelled vinegary, and tasted like leather. The rest of the sashimi was flavorless and tough. The salmon in particular was absolutely putrid. My tofu appetizer was decent, but not excellent. I did like the presentation of it, however.
My white friends seemed to enjoy it, which leads me to believe that they really have no idea what good sushi is, and they certainly aren't aware of the fact that they are being overcharged for it. A glance around the room confirmed my suspicions, as most of the customers were caucasian. This restaurant is simply not what it is made to be.
Don't waste your time here, this isn't real sushi - it's not even close. |

| Added Jun 11, 2009 by Tara99 of Burnaby (1 Reviews) Delicious I went to Toshi tonight for the first time with a couple friends who have been telling me about it for ages. WOW! It was soooo delicious! First, we had to wait over half an hour, on a Thursday night, because the place is so small. I have been to a LOT of mediocre sushi places in Vancouver, there are 2 or 3 on every block. So I was not expecting too much. First we got the seafood gyoza, which was basically all lobster. It was hot and delicious, total comfort food! Then the spicy agasdashi tofu arrived, it was really tasty, usually it's a little too bland for me, but here it's wonderful. Then came the tuna tataki. That was when I really thought I was going to faint. It was delicious! We actually kept the plate afterwards to dip our future rolls in the vinigarette. Then we had 4 rolls, the spicy tuna roll, spicy scallop roll, the Alaska roll, and the house roll. The best was the tuna and the house roll. All in all, the 3 of us were full, and the whole bill came up to $42.00! With tip, we each paid about $16.50 for the most delicious sushi experience ever. I'm going back tomorrow, and so excited to have my husband try the seafood gyoza and tuna tataki! |

| Added Jun 6, 2009 by Gidge of Vancouver (67 Reviews) Still good after all these years The dining gods must been smiling down on us tonight since we snagged premium parking out front and waited only 10 minutes for our seats on a Saturday evening. We've been frequenting Toshi et. company since 2004 and have trained ourselves to get used to the long wait times. Surprisingly, during our meal, there was never really a throng of people at the door so that initially concerned us as we haven't been there in a few months. Did something happen to the food quality?? Rest assured, Toshi San and his regular staff are still there and the quality of food has not faltered. With only 38 seats and normally 6 servers on staff, the service is usually very attentive and highly effective. They turn these tables as quickly as Hon's. Food is prepared instantaneously and served to you piping hot. Tea quickly refilled and getting a hold of anyone is never problem since a server is within 10 feet from you. One minor observation is the militant control of the waitlist- all guests have to be present when called or next group on the list gets your table. Our new favourite dish is the boxed sushi (salmon, scallop, avocado) - it's not on the menu so you have to ask for it. Very glad to see that after 6 years of popularity, Toshi has kept up his reputation for great food at reasonable prices. Now only if the laundromat next door closes down so that he could expand.....that would be wishful thinking! |

I love the box sushi, philadelphia, and a number of other rolls. Prices are reasonable but not outstanding value. Deserts are a no no however, green tea cheese cake was bland. Lineups are uncomfortably long and cramped. Hate the feeling of being watched while you eat. So as good as the food goes, this restaurant will never get a 5 star rating from me. |

one unique thing they have that i've never seen in other sushi places (so far that i know of) is that their dinner box option is always different everyday. it's more like a surprise box.
the food never decreases in quality, and their presentation is always superb.
I like their minimalistic approach to the decor.
though the place is always full, it's only because the patrons know their sushi is one of the best in the city, and they keep coming back. |

It was worth it! We had salmon nigiri - beautiful wild sockeye. Tofu hotpot with dipping sauce - very light and tasty, nice start to a meal. The mixed nigiri plate was clean and tasty. Miso eggplant was tasty, smokey and creamy. Grilled squid was delicious, the sauce was amazing, texture of the squid was perfect. Presentation on everything was great. Service was quick and friendly. I'm looking forward to my next trip. Toshi could join Zippang on Main and Kappa in White Rock for top sushi.

| Added Apr 10, 2009 by anton of Greater Van (20 Reviews) top quality I have been to Toshi a few times. Yes, it's a drag to only be allowed to get a table til the whole party shows up. But when there is such a long lineup waiting, one can understand the reason for this policy. And there's a good reason for such lineups. The main draw is definitely the sushi. All very fresh, all nicely crafted, so satisfying. We also ordered the tuna tataki. Yum-my! the sasame adds a nice texture to the dish. But the tempura was a bit on the soggy side, and not something I would recommend.
Service during the meal is pretty good, food came pretty quickly and my tea cup was never left empty.
It's not an AYCE place, so don't expect to pay $20 and get stuffed. Our bill came to $70 for two. I would consider it a nice treat once in a while. |

I find that the majority of the crowd here is Caucasian, like my self, and as such I'm not surprised that they find the food here good - it isn't. It's not bad, but it doesn't come close to some places like Sushi town or Sushi garden. First of all, it is more expensive than the average sushi bar or restaurant. The salmon was decent, but the piece was small and a bit on the bland side, though the texture was nice. my wife had the tuna, and was not impressed. We waited over 20 minutes for our food - although the place was packed, there were enough sushi chefs to handle the load - I've seen smaller places do a faster and better job - the chefs here are just slow.
The food looks absolutely delicious though - its apparent they take care to present the food properly, however the taste simply does not meet its presentation. Don't expect to leave Toshi with a great experience..it simply isn't worth your time unless you happen to be in the area.
For good sushi, I recommend Sushi-town in burnaby or Sushi garden in vancouver - the rolls are bigger, tastier, and cheaper. If you are in the downtown area, try Aki sushi - great value for downtown prices, and good flavor |

I have been to many sushi restaurants in Canada and the US and have found none to compare with Toshi's quality or price. The wild salmon or tuna sashimi are as advertised, unlike many sushi restaurants that substitute farm fish. My particular favourites are the salmon sashimi, spicy agedashi tofu,(unmatched), seafood gyoza and chicken katsu. The service is efficient and the staff very friendly. Unabashedly I confess this is my favourite restaurant on the planet. |

The sushis were all fresh and in perfect sizes (not too large but not too small either). Rolls were decent; you have to order the right ones and you will not be disappointed. Probably our most favorite dishes were the Black Cod (Gindara) and the Spicy Beef. The two dishes warranted us coming back there and sure enough, we are now regulars there. The line-ups are crazy and we know that, but it really is worth the wait. Just remember not to come in big groups or thinking to stay longer for a chat with your friends after dinner. |

On a weekday, the line ups are around 20-30 min so not that bad. Tried the salmon and tuna sushi and it's very good. House roll and scallop roll were above average. The cooked foods such as the agadeshi tofu, sable fish were above average. Service was fast and efficient but don't come here for the ambiance as there isn't any. It's just a small Japanese run restaurant that gives you great food for a good price. |

We went a few weeks ago on a Saturday night around 8 pm and waited about 35 minutes. Sure better value can be had from picking up sushi from Fujiya but for freshly made sushi, Toshi's is good option. We've always been served promptly with friendly service but that's probably because they want to turn the tables over quickly. It's a very small restaurant where you wait, order, eat n' go; it' not a place to chat and linger. I wouldn't recommend having a party of more than 4 as the wait will be too long. It's not worth it to us to wait line for an hours for "cheap priced, large portion, so-so quality" food but every now and then when we have the patience to wait for up to 40-45 minutes for good quality, well priced sushi, we head over to Toshi. |

For the price, the food is excellent. I've been several times and it is consistently very good. Too many reviewers base their entire rating on service, especially when they perceive it to be negative . They haven't separated the food experience from the service experience. From brief conversations with my servers here, I've learned that it's always full, from open to close everyday, so their main focus is just trying to stay on top of orders. In any case, Toshi is about value. If you value high-quality food, but don't mind 3-star service and ambiance this is the place for you. If you're impatient, whiney, and think that all restaurants should treat you like a god, then it's not.

The waitresses took forever to take my orders, and my orders took forever to come. Bizzare thing is, it wasn't that busy when I was ordering. The food, wasn't that great for me either, the rice was really mushy and tasted liek nothing. I tried the Mango Rolls, they fell apart when i tried to pick them up, I am pretty sure it's not my poor chopstick skills..I use them quite often. I was constantly asking for napkins or a refill for water.. -that i never got that is. I think they got annoyed with me, HELLO? What happened to good service?!I am never going back there again, never, ever. All I have to say is, I would not reccomend you to dine there, and definetely not the most authentic Japansese restaurant I've eaten at. |

The previous reviewer is spot on pointing out that the sashimi here is to die for! It's extremely fresh and the toro basically melts in your mouth. I found both the rolls and nigiri to be good as well, but the sashimi is definitely Toshi's main draw.
Ambiance is lackluster as the restaurant is tiny - hence the perpetual lineup. Table turnover is quite high though. On average, expect to wait 30 minutes.
The pricing is very reasonable. It's a bit more expensive than Seto Sushi in Richmond, but pennies compared to Tojo's!
As you can tell from my review history, I frequent Japanese restaurants quite often. For sushi, here's my ranking:
If price isn't a factor: 1. Tojo's 2. Seto Sushi (Richmond) 3. Toshi Sushi
Since this is the real world and price is a factor, especially considering the ridiculous prices that Tojo is charging, I'd highly recommend Seto in Richmond followed closely by Toshi. |

I find their rolls decent, not spectacular, but the Toro sashimi on Saturday was simply melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Top notch cut and for about $7.75 (4 pieces), it's very reasonable considering the quality. Hamachi was also marvelously clear in flavour.
I love the lineups because it almost guarantees the freshness of my sashimi. Just check out their cold fish display case and all the fish are appetizing. I only have sashimi when the restaurants are busiest so this is the premise I base Toshi's a "5" for sashimi and "3" for sushi. |

So i waited an hour to get into this place and yes it was frustrating especially with all the line drama of people trying to cut somehow but an hour later i was seated at a table. A lady in teh lineup had told us not to get the regular stuff you can get at other places and she was right, dont order the regular things you'd order at other restaurants like sashimi is the same anywhere you get it same with miso soup, tempura etc. So to make the hour line up worth it order all the different stuff you cant get anywhere else or else you'll end up whining about the mediocre food on this site, what do people expect from stuff like sashimi? Sashimi is sashimi anywhere you order it so be different to make it worth the trip. I got the tuna sashimi with sesame sauce, the spicey agedashi, some sort of eggplant with brown sugar on it, a mango and salmon roll, and a spider roll. Except for the spider roll everything else was unique and made it worth the wait. Are waitress was very attentive everything was very clean and i always like when you can see the chefs making everything so was it worth the frustrating hour long wait? Absolutly because the things i orderd i cant get anywhere else, the fish was fresh, the service was super friendly and it was a nice room and the value was very solid |

| Added Jul 1, 2008 by Caera of Main, Vancouver (30 Reviews) Excellent I've been to Toshi's five or six times, and I've never been disappointed.
As everyone points out, there is usually a line up, so the best idea is to get there at around 4:40 to be seated for 5, or come on the hour after that. People complain about the rules, but they are clearly posted and understandable. This is a restaurant that is open for only 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. They rely on quick turnover for their business. They're not going to let you save one of their very few tables for the rest of your party who may not show up for an hour. That is revenue lost. And, as someone else pointed out, it's not fair for people whose full parties stood out in the cold/rain/heat.
The service is always fine here. The waitresses are pleasant, but this isn't a place like Earls or Cactus Club where the servers go out of their way to charm their tips out of your wallet. I've never had any problems with the service. It's always fast and professional; no wrong orders, no rudeness. The previous reviews have said that the sushi chefs are stern-faced, which is true, but they are extremely busy. They work quickly and efficiently. However, we've spoken with them on a couple of occasions, and they seem very pleasant. A couple of them don't speak English very well, which might explain why people have difficulty.
The food is excellent. To be honest, I don't normally like sushi very much, but since coming to Toshi's, I've been able to eat much more of it than I ever thought I would. The freshness makes all the difference. My husband loves the tako, unagi, and some of their more exotic rolls. I usually stick with the california roll and teriyaki chicken, with the occasional bite of his food. Everything there is very fresh, and the sushi is made right in front of your eyes.
I think this restaurant is fabulous, but if you're the kind of person that doesn't understand that the restaurant has rules and you expect to be treated like a king or queen just because you're paying them $20 for food, I'd recommend you consider going to Cactus instead. |

Last week was my first visit to Toshi's. After reading some of the reviews here, I was hesitant in going.
I expected a long line up and I was okay with that; however, when I wait for something I like to feel the wait was worth it.
All I can say is that after waiting 45 minutes to get a table I was treated to mushy sushi, sashimi that was "less that fresh" and quite honestly some of the limpest tempura I have expereinced in the Lower Mainland.
Sure the price is okay. May be having had very good sushi elsewhere my standards are higher.

| Added Apr 12, 2008 by Tommy2010 of Cambie (7 Reviews) Not what they used to be... I've been going to Toshi's since they've opened and have traditionally received good service and good food. However, the last couple of times that I have gone this year, the food was okay at best and the service was not what it used to be. The table had to be re-cleaned after we sat down and my girl-friend found a small string of hair in the rolled sushi. (Not that big of a deal, as I have seen worse).
I felt slightly claustophobic in the restaurant as they really pack the customers in like sardines.
If you want a cheap restaurant, don't mind the wait and really want to experience other customers' elbows, this is the place to be!

Excellent sushi, one of the best and most freshest sashimi I've ever had. Really good service, we ate and chatted until 7:30pm. We were never rushed to leave even with the line-up outside.
Would definitely come back for more! |
| Added Apr 3, 2008 by FoodLover999 of Richmond, BC (7 Reviews) Alright, But not worth the wait I found the food here flavorful and well-plated. The sushi was soft and the rice was moist and soft, and not in the bland kind of way. However, the servers and staff act like the Soup-Nazi in that episode of Seinfeld! They herd you in and herd you out as if you were cattle! The service is quick and rushed, and the atmosphere is rather cramped. It is good, but for a nice, relaxed, evening, I recommend going somewhere else. |
| Added Apr 3, 2008 by LMG of Yaletown, Vancouver (1 Reviews) Second Time Unlucky This was my second time going to Toshi’s. After my first visit, I said I wouldn’t go back but since a friend wanted to go there last week, I said I would give it another try.
We waited over 45 minutes for a table (which I’m fine with as I know it’s a small restaurant and popular). Unfortunately, I had to ask the waitress 3 times to fill my glass with water. I also felt rushed and that they were doing me a favour by serving me food!
The food was average at best and the price is comparable for the quality of food. I like the location as it’s close to my apartment but there are many other restaurants around my neighbourhood that would appreciate me as a customer.

I ordered their Sashimi, Toro Sashimi and assorted sushi and it was watery and not fresh. The atmosphere is cramped and the service is very poor, ignoring small party tables seems to the norm there. Id say the food was very average and perhaps if you are a poor student on a tight budget its acceptable but then again so in Mcdonalds and at least they are not rude there.
Toshi is a prime example of "you get what you pay for"

However, just upon sitting for a few minutes, the waitress just told us to move to another table. Seeing that it was simply another 2 persons table I asked her for an explanation why we had to move, out of curiosity. To my surprise, rather than giving me a polite explanation, she gave me this mean stare as if saying how dare I disobeyed her request to move. It was extremely rude, and I didn't feel like eating afterwards. Not going to visit Toshi again. |

I am of Japanese descent and when we moved here about three years ago i really liked Toshi's. We would go quite often. We moved to Burnaby and stopped going however just last week we moved to Cambie and 18th and decided to try it again.
My rice dish was overcooked and my sushi was not fresh. My husbands meal was also dissappointing (again not fresh) and the tea was cold.
I would say that they have lost what they had a few years ago and by reading some posts here their service has also regressed as well. Pity

| Added Mar 10, 2008 by rhmcgarry of vancouver (2 Reviews) Clarification This is just a clarification on my post below.
My wife and I (she is chinese) eat at many busy Asian restaurants and expecting a "how you all doin?" smiling face is not our expectations.
If they would have stopped my wife at the door and said "sorry but we cannot seat you until your full party is there" then so be it. The fact that it happened after they were seated, handed menus, coats off , ready to order etc - where they had to endure the embarassment is what is unacceptable. They broke their own rule by seating my family without checking the party's size and then backpedalled to the embarassment of my wife.

| Added Mar 10, 2008 by missmay of West End, Vancouver (1 Reviews) My personal review... Here is my review of this restaurant.
As a Japanese person who has been raised in a household where the food was all Japanese, I find the food at Toshi Sushi to be reminiscent of homestyle Japanese food. Not only is it good quality but the prices are really great for what you get. You cannot compare Toshi Sushi to places like Tojo (no offence Chef Tojo, your sushi is very good but way too overpriced... that is why Japanese people don't flock to your restaurant). I recommend any of the Sushi Combos and many of the A La Carte dishes! I finally was able to try their "Toro Sashimi" and it was the best I have ever had in Vancouver.
The service is fast and very good but to those who expect a "super" friendly, atmosphere where the servers are smiling ear to ear don't bother coming here. The servers at Toshi Sushi are all just trying to get good food to the customers as fast as they can and at the same time maintaining the "huge" lineup that starts half an hour before the restaurant opens.
To those who were offended or who don't like the restaurant's policy of "all parties having to be present before being seated" need to think of other people before themselves. There is a sign at the front door stating this very strict rule. The owners are not doing this to make "more money". I have heard customers saying that that is why the rule is in place which I think is just ignorant. They have lineups all evening! It is just courtesy to the other guests who have "also" waited a long time to eat there.
The restaurant only seats around 20-30 people so it is a little cramped but that was never really an issue for both my husband and I (my husband is 6'2" and he thinks the seating is fine...) |

Our waitress was very kind. Our tea was always refilled. The food is delicious. The sashimi is very fresh and melts in your mouth. The color of the salmon is amazing. I wish we had the chance to try the oyster motoyaki but they had run out already and it was only 5:45 (they open at 5:00)! The food was great, the service was attentive. Even though the restaurant is small, I like the ambience because it's cozy. I felt a bit like a goldfish in a bowl however as we were seated by the window and there quite a few people outside waiting for their own table gazing at what we were eating. It was a bit distracting because you could feel eyes on you as you ate :D Regardless, I love this place. |

| Added Feb 11, 2008 by 13gnowm of Vancouver (5 Reviews) Great food, but insanely packed. Food-wise: The food here is incredibly delicious! Sushi tastes consistently fresh. But actually the cooked food here is what really stands out. Definitely worth a 30min wait or early 5pm dinner.
Service-wise: Great wait-staff who runs the floor really well even in such cramped quarters. Tea consistently filled up. Orders are always correct. The oddity is that you write your own name on the waiting list. However, not too big of an issue. Bit of warning though, make sure your whole group is prepared to be seated or else you lose your spot.
Ambiance-wise: Packed like sardines. Sitting on the bar with two/three people is a nice little spot to eat.
Recommendations: Soft shell crab karrage, Miso eggplant, Black cod |

There is a lineup outside the restaurant every weekday before they open. Luckily you can write your name down on a sheet if there is a line up and they'll call your name when a table comes available.
The service is blazing fast and the food is great but get there as quick as you can before they open. |

The ambiance leaves much to be desired. I found the sushi to be fresh and very flavourful.

| Added Dec 5, 2007 by Trevor of Vancouver (63 Reviews) Good everytime I've been to Toshi's many many times. Each time, I expect to wait. That's because I know the food and service I'll be receiving that night is superb. The rolls are fresh and tasty, the sushi is not overloaded with rice as some restaurants do to make their sushi look bigger. The cooked items are just as fantastic. The eggplant is my absolute favourite~I often order one to go after I've finished my dinner.
The service is always pleasant. The ladies are always smiling... who wants to see a grumpy face?? They are efficient and courteous. Ambience is nice. You get to see the sushi chefs all working hard to get you your food as quickly as possible. The only minor blip is that the tables are sometimes too close together.
For the reviewer "screenap," each restaurant has their house policies for a reason. Given the small size of this restaurant, I'm sure you can try to understand from their standpoint why they don't want to seat parties in which some members aren't yet present. Who's to say that you won't be waiting for the rest of your party for 1/2 hour or more? That's lost business for them. If you were the owner, you might do the very same thing. But it's easy to say that you wouldn't because you're not actually in that position. |
| Added Dec 2, 2007 by screenap of vancouver (1 Reviews) Skip it! There are far better places in Vancouver My family and I recently visited Toshi. I waited in line in the snow/rain (0 degrees) while my kids and wife stayed in the car. When I got in I told the attendant that I had four people (my wife and kids were walking to the restaurant - I could see them just outside the restaurant). It took everything i had to convince the "lady" that she should give me the table. She kept repreating that the people had to be in the restaurant and smiling with a dumb smile. This was my first (and last) Toshi experience.
In this day and age, no matter how popular a place is, I cannot accept rudeness and a disregard for customer service. After we eventually got seated, a number of other patrons fully supported our plight, and many rolled their eyes as to the approach of the restaurant owners.
The food was fine, but average in a city where there are as many sushi places as Starbucks coffee outlets. I would visit Honjin in Yaletown, Yoshi on Georgia or Tojo's for an extra treat rather than waste any time at Toshi. My family and I eat out a lot, and I cannot accept this sort of experience for an average food quality joint at best. |

We had heard about Toshi's and decided to give it a try. Yes there was a wait, but it was worth it. | Added Aug 25, 2007 by poorstudent of Vancouver (23 Reviews) Long wait for sushi Waited an hour for a party of 5, which apparently is normal. If you don't mind the Stephos-style line out the door, a good place for sushi. High turnover meant fresh sashimi. Lovely tea. No complaints about the food, and highly recommended the soft-shell crab, the dinner box was a little dissapointing, due to the selection of food that went into it. Tempura was lightly battered and fried to perfection. |
| Added Jul 11, 2007 by genux of Vancouver (16 Reviews) Packed! This place is always packed, regardless of when you go. Definitely not a good place if you're in a large group (5+ people) unless waiting a long time is something you don't mind.
Their rolls are very good. Perhaps not incredible, but better than your average fair. The usual spider roll, house roll (avocado on top), dynamite roll, and others come in ample servings for their price. The donburi dishes are pretty much what you'd expect.
Because the place is small, you won't have a hard time getting the servers' attention. Conversing with the chefs on the bar is always a fun experience if you're the type of person who likes doing that. |
| Added May 19, 2007 by Souren of Coquitlam (4 Reviews) Very Impressive I absolutely loved this little restaurant. The ambiance is great, exactly like some of the little restaurants I visited in Japan. The servers were all very friendly, if slightly rushed (this place is always packed!). The food was great. Not only was it delivered quickly dispite how busy it was, but it tasted wonderful. Best motoyaki I've ever had! I'd reccomend this restaurant to anyone, but come early, or you'll never get a seat. |
| Added Apr 20, 2007 by madddskillz of Burnaby (58 Reviews) it's good Food here is pretty standard, not very unique or anything. Place is small and there are always long waits. I really wasn't expecting much, despite all the hype, and after waiting in line and looking at the menu, I wasn't impressed.
But the place really is very good. After a while of eating poor/average quality japanese food, you get conditioned to expect it a certain way, but when you receive the same food prepared right, with quality ingredients, it's just so good!
It definitely wasn't very expensive either. It's you haven't tried it, give it a shot. Altho.. I was there during the nucks game, 8:30, on a thursday, when the streets were empty, and still had to wait 20 minutes.. |
| Added Apr 10, 2007 by foodfanatic of South Vancouver (295 Reviews) Not worth the lineup. The 1st time here about 2 yrs ago was a pretty avg experience w/ the cooked food being tasty while the sushi was pretty much standard. The toro's fatty & our table of 5 ordered 10 but later were mistakenly billed for 100 pcs (almost didn't notice just thought that the prices weren't all that cheap). Of course, that was easily resolved as it's a ridiculously obvious mistake on their part. Temp. for some of the fish served seemed a bit warmer than the melt-in-your-mouth experience called for, but I dismissed that as it being the harsh Arctic wind chill outside & the packed rm inside.
Recently, gave them another shot. A ~40 min wait when we foolishly thought hitting them a bit past 5pm would snare us a spot. The sushi pcs were skillfully packed so it doesn't come falling apart, incl. the uni pcs (tho somehow, the 1st pc tasted fine, while the 2nd had a hint of sewage). Admittedly cheap w/ the turnover they can afford fresh ingredients but the quality of the fish was just still so-so. Really fatty toro like overstuffed farmed fish, was almost sickening to eat because it was served so warm it was slimy. The saba somehow came out extra fatty as well while I'm not sure if it's b/c it was cut closer to the belly. The "spicy garlic beef" is not at all spicy but it has a hint of garlic but was very very dry. Not worth the price tag on that. Surprisingly expensive, imo, for the cut of beef & the way it's served relative to the cost of their fish items. The ika karage was interestingly served as fried squid sticks. The old fryer oils made it taste of those packaged Asian dried cuttlefish. Nabeyaki Udon broth was quite disappointing. The "baked" black cod was like drinking oil (possibly undercooked so natural oils didn't get a chance to seep out a bit). Too greasy to swallow, we left that to be tossed after a bite each.
Inexpensive sush but not worth the wait & doesn't quite deserve the hype. For 2, a little over $70 pretip, post tax, no drinks except tea. |
| Added Mar 11, 2007 by pickyeaters of Dunbar, Vancouver (7 Reviews) Not bad except for tempura We had heard of Toshi's for a long time but did not want to wait in line but went early this day with a friend from Japan. Sushi was good, rolls fresh and small enough to pop into your mouth without having to bite them and have them fall apart on the table. Was disappointed with the thick doughy tempura batter on the veggie tempura dish though. Thought it should have been light and crispy. Baked eggplant dish was good, and I don't usually like eggplant. Would come back for a second try though, as long as it was early and I didn't have to wait. |
| Added Feb 28, 2007 by louielobster of Glendale (54 Reviews) Add two more. All the negative reviews on this restaurant came true to my horror. Here are my additions: We sat at the Sushi counter and what an encounter with the "Sour faced moustached" Sushi chefs it was. Never a smile... thought I'd enter a oriental sweat shop. Tried to order from the "sushi chef" from behind the counter and he waved me off with disdain. Well, so much for warm customer relationships. I sat though dinner like as if I'd just got turndown from my first kiss with the Frog Princess. And now the food........sushi rice was hard and under cooked. The negitoro roll's tuna and green onions were sent through a grinder (isn't it suppose to be chopped?). It had the texture and taste of school paste. Cut me experience short and went to another restaurant. |

I can't believe how good everthing is and I mean everything...sushi, tapas, don, noodles...etc.etc.... yes the line up is LONG but oh so worth the wait. Why is there a line up? Is it not obvious, this place rocks! You'll fall in love with the food immediately and will crave it every few days. Prices are reasonable and for the quality you get, worth every penny!!! | Added Dec 11, 2006 by thecritic of East Side (173 Reviews) A solid choice but always a lineup I had a craving for sushi yesterday and decided to roll by Toshi's and try and get in. I have tried a couple times in the past, there has always been at least a half an hour wait and could never be bothered. I was flying solo and managed to skip the 45 minute queue as a single spot at the bar opened up. Hungry faces in line did not seem too impressed and as I rolled past them when my name was called after only waiting about 2 or 3 minutes.
I order a bunch of different sushi items including a couple pieces of tuna and salmon nigiri, chopped scallop cone, dynamite roll, avocado roll, and a miso soup. Everything was good as I expected. The scallop cone was well prepared; not too much rice and the nori was crisp making it very easy to eat and not chewy at all.
I think the bill came to about 20 bucks including tip which was reasonable. I would probably come here more often but the wait in line is simply not worth it. |
| Added Dec 7, 2006 by Apple of Vancouver (6 Reviews) Just slightly above average I've seen all the rave reviews about this place, so I thought I'd give it a try. I heard about the long line-ups, so I phoned in to do takeout instead. The wait was 45 mins, which is what I expected. When I got there, the place was packed and there was a line-up, but my food was ready as promised. I had ordered their famous baked eggplant, mango/salmon roll, california roll, negitoro roll, and dynamite roll. I would agree that their baked eggplant is probably one of the best tasting eggplant dishes. The california roll is really good too because of the taste and the moistness. The rest of the rolls on the otherhand is about average. The sushi is fresh, but when it comes to taste, I've had better. The prices are good and they do match the quality of the food. I will try this place again however and order different items to see if it is really worth 5 stars. |

The staff is very friendly and always remember me and my favourite dishes. The spicy agedashi tofu is amazing...and the house roll is a must. Be ready to wait for a table...and try to keep your group small. The larger the group the longer the wait for you and the other guests waiting to dine. The food is definitely above average...and the price is very affordable |
| Added Sep 4, 2006 by Dagwood of North Shore (39 Reviews) Very good quality and great value I think the (obvious) reason Toshi is so popular is value Yes, the waits are a nuisance but to get very good quality food without paying high end prices is what will keep me coming back again and again. On our most recent visit last week we had two miso soups, spicy agedashi (excellent), spicy garlic beef (very good), and 5 rools (real crab Cali, Alaska, House roll, mango/smoked salmon and negitoro). All good and all for about $50 including tip. |
| Added Sep 2, 2006 by 148jules of Quebec & 18th (31 Reviews) Overrated sushi joint The long line-ups in front of this place all night long is only an indication that the restaurant is small and that people have read the many raves by food critic Mia Stainsby in the Sun. I have been 4 times towards closing when the wait is very short (I personally will not wait 30 minutes to get a table when I am hungry like people do at this place and at Stephos - there are other restaurants to support that make equally good food). Ambiance: small crowded room very clean and brightly lit. Have sat at the sushi most times and a great view of the sushi being made. Service: attentive and friendly. Food: generally well presented and beautiful dishes. Menu alas is limited - no tonkatsu??!! And portions too small; my tempura udon came with one shrimp & two small vegetable tempura, udon noodles, broth and some scallion garnish - a simple elegant dish but hardly filling. Sushi is not particularly outstanding although very fresh because of the high volume. Baked eggplant with sweet miso paste (not on the menu) is very good. Overall a good sushi joint (2 & 3 stars are decent and solid) but quite overrated and this is also what some of my friends think. |
| Added Jul 9, 2006 by Gidge of Vancouver (67 Reviews) Died and gone to Toshi's We've been here about 40 times over the past three years and love the place. The sushi is consistently well done and the service is quick and attentive. I would say honestly say that they offer the best bang for your buck in Vancouver for good quality sushi. The mango & smoked salmon roll is my favourite. We also love the sweet miso eggplant which is a must...even for non vegetable eaters. Toshi San is always there meticulously preparing the sushi, so you can count that quality is always to his standards. Due to their increasing popularity and limited seating, you must time your arrival or risk waiting in line for 30 minutes plus. Go at 5:00pmish or after 8:30pm on weekends. Go in groups no larger than 4 and when you're done with your meal, be courteous and do not linger. Enjoy! Note: The reviewer has submitted a more recent review for this restaurant. Funny thing is I've also read "smelly" review thought local Japanese BBS. So here I was. To be fair, I tried a little bit of everything including sushi (both nigiri & roll), sashimi, grilled & deep-fried items. They may be authentic - not terrible, but less than great. Just like you find many mediocre burger places in town, there are average Japanese restaurants in Japan, too. With this quality, I find this place rather expensive. Well, as I work neaby, I might give another chance. |

I don't know what the person before me ate but, go back, it is worth the crazy 30-40 minute line up or get take out. Try the baked eggplant, house roll, grilled squid, awesome soy sheet rolls ect... Everything was fresh and tasty, the only thing I wasn't thrilled about was the green tea cake it was so so in my opinion but authentic according to my boyfriend and he's Japanese so. But really if you are looking for very good Japanese food and don't feel like spending alot this is the place for you. Go that's all I can say |

This person sounded as if he (or she) is working for the restaurant. If not, my apology. But really, why are you listing all the prices and telling us how many chairs they have? Somehow your review doesn't look validating and has the feeling of an advertisement. You must love this restaurant so much that you have to have their menu memorized and keep their floorplan? LOL.. Anyway sorry, I've been to this restaurant and I would say some of their dishes are indeed Ok. But I wouldn't say they are great. Try Yanaki or Sushiyama for similar price range. Or better yet try Tojo's or Black Tuna (considerably more expensive but one of the best in Vancouver.) |
| Added Jan 25, 2006 by bing of Burnaby (1 Reviews) Authentic Japanese Food The best sushi that I have ever had in my life! Pricing was good, food was superb and service was outstanding. Go for the rolls if you have a limited budget because they are cheap and in good portion. Their HOUSE COMBO #5 ($13.95) is the thing to go for if you like sushi, you get 10 piece of assorted sushi all made right before you order. The recommended rolls are: Nigi Toro ($3), Nigi Hama ($3), Spider Roll ($6.95!), House Roll ($4.95) and BC Roll ($4.25). If you dont have a tight budget, order TORO sashimi, Uni Sushi, and Blue Fin Tuna Sushi (if they have it; it taste better than the regular tuna).
PS Get there before they open or you will have to line-up and wait because restaurant is small (only 28 seats total, which 8 seats are Sushi Bar) |

Well priced, very good quality rolls (lots of sashimi, light on the rice), good quality soya.. light and flaky tempura. Highly recommend for the price, the only negative point is no reservations and long lineups. |
