Not floored
I heard a lot of good reviews of this place so I decided to try it. Well, it wasn't THAT good. The food was average but I will give them props for trying to be unique. They had scallop gyozas and this other roll with mango, pineapple and eel. I've had mango/fruit in my sushi before it's usually pretty good. Their specialty rolls weren't outstanding.

The atmosphere was nice though. Good decor. Modern with touches of Asian influence. I liked it.

The service wasn't the greatest. The waitress was OK. Not the friendliest, but not mean.

The price was not worth it in my opinion. There are way better food in Vancouver for $90 for 2 people.

Overall... it's an average restaurant.

i loved it!
food - fantastic! the special sushi rolls are soo good. best i ever had anywhere. they had a huuggge variety. i recommend the denman roll. if you have the money, try all their rolls lol
service - the waitress was very polite and kind. we even got a complimentary dish. the food comes quite slow though, but it's worth it
ambiance - the music was good, the place is nice. there might be a few things i thought could be different but overall it's prty nice.
When we went, it was only our table and another table. but we went pretty early. but i recommend this restaurant. i hope everyone can go try it out. the restaurant is fantastic! they need to stay in business!

Favourite Sushi place
The menu you are presented is amazingly creative! I've never been at a sushi place with that many different kinds of sushi.
The service is decent. It happens that you have to wait for a few min to be served or refilled with tea. The price is good. It for sure isn't the cheapest sushi place but that's noth something you should expect from such a restaurant. Very delicous dining there! I recommend!

Creative and Good
Have tried many of the Japanese tapas style restaurants in town and have found this restaurant to always be consistent, offering good quality small plates as well as creative sushi. While the prices may be a tad higher, I find that the portions are on average, larger than most tapas/Izakaya restaurants of similar caliber. If cheap is your goal, there are numerous places that offer decent (and sometimes not so decent) in fact, rather run-of-the-mill, sushi.

Black Tuna is where I come when I crave good quality and creative Japanese food. My one concern is that there is never a line up here. This makes for easy spontaneous dine-outs, but in the long run, may mean it won't be here for long.

love this place
black tuna has never failed me. The food is always fresh! I swear they have THE best tasting vegetarian gyoza's ever. I have to admit the food is a little pricey, especially when cheap japanese food is abundent in vancouver. Nonetheless, the spicy oysters ad naby udon is well worth the trip. Service is awesome, as the owner is usually waiting on tables. I'm just a little disapointed that this place isn't as busy as it should be.

A great find
We had driven by Black Tuna many times, but decided to go in just before Christmas. The restaurant was fairly empty but had a great view.

We were going out for a drink and dinner prior to my company staff party and we picked the perfect place. When we arrived they brought out a complementary mackerel dish which started everything perfectly. The wine was also well priced.

We ordered a few of the special rolls (can't think of their names off the top of my head), but they were very delicious. The rice (which I find to be the true distinguisher between good and bad sushi) was cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth.

It was a little higher price than your general fair, but for the location in English bay, really quite affordable.

No wonder tuna is black here!!
After reading some great reviews about the restaurant, I tried it out. The place is located on Denman near the water. This so called New York Style sushi wasn't really for me. It seemed like regular sushi with some mayo and suaces on top.
Service was terrible. People werent' friendly.
This place is totally overrated. There are many other great sushi places in downtown. I dont recommend it.

New York Style? I think not.
I love to visit local Asian restaurants and I had high hopes for this one. Very dissappointed, location was lovely, but that is the best thing about this restaurant. Inexperienced server with poor service and the quality of the food was nowhere close to other reviews that I had read on previous reviews. The bill came out close to $70 when I dined by myself and I was not nearly satified with my hunger. Conclusively, it is a cheap imitation of fusion style cuisine and ridiculously overpriced.

Japannese with a view of English Bay
Tried this restaurant hoping to avoid the lineup's of a Friday nite. Sat in the patio(not heated). It's rite next door to the Pacific Crab Co which has a heated patio(believe it is SOHO now?). The table is really small even for two people. Not helped that the serving dishes they use are big. Had to shuffle food around all nite long.
Tried the Yellowtail with Jalapeno, Scallop Gyoza, Spicy Seafood Soup, The Dinner Entree with Toro Tartare with Caviar, Miso Soup and Chilean Sea Bass Black Tuna style with garlic ginger but never did get the rice nor the dessert and Mexican Roll with chicken/cream cheese/avocado and spicy sauce.
The yellowtail, toro, gyoza and seabass were very good. The sea bass was especially good. Portion was tapa's style and size. I didn't have any problems with the food quality. But the service could have been better and the timing of food could have been better as well. My tea cup was consistently empty. And our server could use some more finer dining serving experience. Good selection of wine.
Just a not on a previous reviewer mentioning not serving wasabi with the toro. i believe that some japanese including Tojo that suggest not including soy sauce and wasabi with their sashimi. and that s/s and wasabi is a N American way of eating sashimi. IMHO, the yuzu sauce and sliced jalapeno were adequate complement for fresh sashimi. Where freshness and quality matters, raw sashimi can be enjoyed as is. Soy sauce and wasabi can only mask and/or take away from the freshness of a good product.
Total for two for food alone was $80. With so many dining options offering better value, it may be a while before I return to Black Tuna.

Sushi with style
My experience at Black Tuna was truly incredible. The sushi was probably one of the best ones I have ever had and the ambiance made the dining there even more memorable.

My expectations going into the place weren't very high because of the other so-so reviews here. But the gf wanted to go somewhere with a bit more style that most of the West End sushi places have to offer, so Black Tuna was an obvious choice.

The atmosphere inside was modern, quiet, spacious yet cozy. Classic jazz filled the room and gave an extra touch of elegance to the evening. They started us off with a complimentary plate of sizzling grilled mackarel which was delicately spicy and packed with flavour. We just went on and did several rounds of small sushi and maki orders until we were full.

I found the toro and yellow tail sushi amazingly good. The octopus was truly remarkable. The cooks even managed to get something mainstream like a salmon skin roll to stand out . My gf ordered one of their mini cones which came nicely arranged on a very elegant little stand. We aren't tourists but just had to take a picture of it.

What a great experience!

Hidden Secret
Have been going here with friends nearly every week for lunch for over a year now. The lunch boxes at $9.95 are a great value, chicken, mackerel or tofu with rice, salad, tempura, veggies, 3 California rolls and 2 sushi (salmon and tuna). The deep fried tofu is the best! A view over English Bay too. Haven't been for dinner yet but friends have and say its excellent. Friendly staff and well worth the climb up the stairs.

Average food, view is better on the patio
I had high expectations for this place after reading the good reviews, but I was disappointed. I'm not saying the food is bad. In fact, I think the lunch specials are quite good value considering how much you get. However, there's nothing separating this Japanese place to any other average ones. The teriyaki was overly sweet and oily. The tempura is nothing special. The batter is nice and fluffy but the taste doesn't quite live up to the look. I hate carrot tempuras and sure enough, there is one piece in the basket.

The tapas menu on the other hand is overpriced. I ordered toro jalapano. For $7, I was not expecting 4 thin slices of toro. The fact that this dish did not come with wasabi was a major drawback. It was way too fishy. The equally thin jalapano pieces and the sweet sauce could not mask the taste. I'm not impressed. I suppose I'm expecting authetic Japanese food when they clearly advertise Japanese fusion. I don't think they'll see me again.

Best Japaneese food in Town
I really like the menu here. A great variety of hot and cold sushi dishes. The chef has a geat imaginatio and really works with the whole fusion concept well.

The service was a little lacking last time I was in. I figured they had understaffed...but still come on its a freiday night....get with it.

Try it and try the Alaska Roll. WOW!

now this is sushi!!!!
Awesome. I went here last month with my significant other and was treated to an experience that was surprising. For a place that is on the second floor and tough to find, the food and service was exceptional. Complementary sashimi, nice wine selection, and outstanding food display made for a memorable night. I recommend this place above all else for a quiet night with great fod. Haba is great, but if it's peace and quiet with great sushi you want, try this one out.

quiet, elegant ambiance, inventive menu
Stepping off the chaotic rush of Denman street on a summer evening and walking into Black Tuna is like taking a deep breath or a long cool drink of water - you can't help relaxing and feeling refreshed. Not too small but still cozy; dim with beautifully set tables but not too formal, this place has struck a fine note among all the other run-of-the-mill sushi houses. Every dish i've tasted so far has been above standard. There are quite a few of the traditional dishes, but they've also done wonderful things with fatty tuna and slivers of fresh jalepeno, sushi rolls served up with bits of fruit or smoked salmon, etc. Service is gracious if a little slow at times, and prices are just a bit above average. You won't be paying too much for the freshness and quality of your meal, and the view of English Bay is spectacular.

Best sushi experiance I've ever had.
I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT! Best sushi restuarant I've been to, and I've been around. Sachi sushi in Whistler is awesome, but more expensive so this is now my favourite. You get way better service and atmosphere than your regular sushi joint for only about 50 cents more per roll. The presentation is exquisite! The service and plating makes you feel important. None of this plastic dishware and wood chopsticks. You get real ceramic plates with beautiful designs and real glass glasses. Really trendy, modern decor, friendly staff (we were sent a complimentary appetizer, the mackeral which was DELICIOUS). The rolls are huge! and well made. My regular sushi complaint is about the tuna rolls, when you get a piece of tuna roll that either a) wasn't rolled properly and you left with a huge chunck of seaweed in your mouth after chewing, and b) when you have to chew your tuna, it should just melt in your mouth.... The tekka maki at Black Tuna just MELTED in my mouth. DELICIOUS! My friend says she doesn't like tuna rolls, but I made her try this one and she LOVED it! Just goes to show how amazing this restaurant is. You should go.
