Excellent bread
Submitted Monday, November 12, 2007 - 11:32pm [Dine in]

The bread here is fantastic. They should sell it out the back as take aways. The food is good too, but I really remember the bread. Service was a little awkward, our table was confused with another and they made a big presentation on our table of someone else's meal. Oops. We were underdressed and it the wait staff did not approve of our appearance, which made us feel uncomfortable at first.

An easy place for dinner
Submitted Monday, November 12, 2007 - 11:29pm [Dine in]

Browns is nearly identical to the Cactus Club except for being smaller and quieter. The food and drinks menu are nearly the same. The food is decent, nothing special, and it's a nice casual place to eat with friends. This is not where I take my friends who are into fine dining, but it's good for those who like an approachable, varied menu.

Serious eaters don't eat late here
Submitted Monday, November 12, 2007 - 11:26pm [Dine in]

I had dinner here last Saturday and was nearly ready to cancel my reservation after reading some of the recent reviews. We started dinner at 7 pm and the food was good. The menu is interesting and has many good choices. I had the short rib pasta for main course and the bison spring rolls for appetiser. Both were very good. The venue inside is very noisy as it is a long narrow room with a brick wall on one side. We had a group next to us and they were deafening. Our service was not particularly good, we waited a long time before being greeted but once we had placed our order the timing was good. Our waiter was not particularly knowledgeable, came across as insincere, and just really seemed to want to get away from our table. Still I am willing to give it another chance. I think the lesson to learn here is not eat here late.

Blue Water Cafe + Raw Bar1095 Hamilton Street, Vancouver
One of Vancouver's finest
Submitted Monday, November 12, 2007 - 11:18pm [Dine in]

I ate here twice in October 2007 and was impressed both times by the quality of the food, the ambience, and the service. Waitstaff are professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. The food is very well done. The ambience is good and they are one of the few good restaurants on the street that serves after 10 pm. It's expensive but it's worth it, a great place to take someone you want to impress.

Nice location but...

I walk past this restaurant every day on my way to and from work and tell that it's the place to be and be seen. I went there with my friends who are the type that want to sit outside and be seen...well it's a nice patio, but over priced food, not a great selection. Service a little indifferent but not bad. I won't suggest this one to my friends.

Kalypso Restaurant & Tapas Bar1323 Robson Street, Vancouver
Overpriced, good for tour groups
Submitted Saturday, December 2, 2006 - 8:35pm [Dine in]

I have the feeling that this place caters for tourists especially with the guy in the outfit out front giving out appetiser coupons. I ordered the Kalypso chicken which is a chicken breast covered with four bbq prawns on a stick, rice, and potatoes. The prawns were good, the chicken was nice, I didn't bother with the rice which looked like Uncle Ben's. Our server was pleasant and just the right balance of attention and giving us space to talk. The food was overpriced for what we got, quite a lot of starch. I would expect pita bread for the dips rather than rolls, although they were served piping hot. I ordered the baklava for dessert and got a single small square for $4...which seems a bit much to me. It was decent, but I doubt I would go back.

Great service!

Everyone here has commented on how helpful the wait staff are and our experience was the same, our waiter was very attentive and helpful. I ordered the rack of lamb, medium, which arrived rare, but was still nice. I had the tiramisu and the special salad, each of which were decent but not out of the ordinary. The ambience is a little plain but the wait staff make up for it.

Great food, slow and indifferent service
Submitted Saturday, December 2, 2006 - 8:25pm [Dine in]

I had brunch here and had to wait for a table (not because of too many diners but because of not enough prepared tables) but the staff was attentive to me while I waited. Until I was seated at which point I was totally ignored. I asked for water which never arrived, and I only saw my server when he took my order and dumped off my plate, and after I waved him down to ask for the check, and wave him down to take my check. The food was very good though, I had a Mexican inspired brunch dish and the kitchen staff sent out complimentary breads which were fantastic. The food was good and on the pricey side.

Great location but needs service upgrade!
Submitted Saturday, December 2, 2006 - 8:19pm [Dine in]

I had brunch here during the summer and was on my own and no one hesitated to seat me at the prime outside table for two. I waited quite a while for my juice and coffee, but my meal of poached eggs with salmon was very good, although small portions.

Shame, a waste of a great menu
Submitted Saturday, December 2, 2006 - 8:11pm [Dine in]

I had to wait quite a while at the front of house before I was noticed and then waved to find a seat on my own. The menu looked fantastic though...this was right at the height of the water crisis and they couldn't serve coffee...wot, no filtered coffee? Isn't it worth buying a few gallons of water and some coffee plungers? I ordered poached eggs with sourdough bread, bacon, and home fries. My poached eggs came in a bowl, my bread was wholewheat rather than sourdough, and my potato wedges were undercooked. I don't think I will be going back, too bad because their menu looks great.
