Delicious Breakfast
Submitted Wednesday, October 14, 2009 - 10:27pm [Dine in]

Met up with a few coworkers for breakfast at the Elbow Room. It was everyone's first time and we all had a good time. Food was surprisingly delicious and fresh, my benny was much better than expected.

We did get some degree of abuse from our server, who was very talkative. He didn't say anything too offensive and overall was efficient and helpful. Other patrons in the restaurant seemed okay with the strange style of service; however, a couple didn't seem too pleased and the server politely left them alone.

I did have get up to get my own coffee refill - you can say it's part of the unique experience they offer but I am not sure if I like it.

Delicious food in a nice atmosphere
Submitted Thursday, October 8, 2009 - 10:33am [Dine in]

I was quite surprised to see all the bad reviews for this Joey's as my experience there last night was a rather positive one. I see people complaining about the outfits of the waitresses' but other chain restaurants of the same style have similar servers, don't they?

It was a work dinner for the eight of us and despite all being female, we enjoyed the atmosphere, and the boobs really did not bother us all that much.

We had the wine room upstairs and the atmosphere was fantastic. Our server was attentive and efficient, although not the friendliest. She disappeared after taking everyone's order but mine and I had to go downstairs to get her.

I would rate the food 4.5 if I could. Everything tasted great and my ahi tuna burger was excellent. Portions were very generous and all eight of us were very happy with the quality of food. We were so stuffed after our mains that we couldn't even order dessert.

The server knew the menu well and took pretty good care of us. She kept telling us not to move seats as we wanted separate bills, which was absolutely understandable; but having to hear the same thing over and over again became a bit annoying.

Yes the prices are a bit on the high side but for the decor of the place and quality of food, we gladly paid our bills without any complaints.

Overall I had a pleasant experience; only complaint might be related to service, which could have been a bit more personal and genuine. Oh well...good service is hard to come by these days and I am quite alright to accept efficient and robotic service, especially at a busy place like Joey's.

Did Not Disappoint
Submitted Wednesday, October 7, 2009 - 2:07am [Dine in]

Been wanting to try this restaurant and we finally did tonight. I can't say the experience exceeded expectations but certainly didn't disappoint.
The two of us had onion soup and mussels to start, for mains we had the duck confit and lamb shank, and creme brulee and chocolate silk cake for desserts. Everything was tasty, the desserts were outstanding and the mains were full of great flavors. I can't say it was the best meal I've ever had in a french restaurant but it certainly wasn't a bad experience. Our server was very attentive and we found the food portions quite generous. With a glass of wine, the bill came to $100 for the two of us. The value was great, considering we left the restaurant full and satisfied.
It's a nice place to go if you want decent food in a nice atmosphere. One complaint is space is quite limited and tables are kind of squeezed together. You can hear your neighbors' conversations clearly. The other complaint is the cleanliness of the washrooms - I didn't see any signs indicating ladies / gents so I assume patrons can use either. I personally do not like the idea of having both genders using the same washrooms, but maybe it's just me.
Overall a pleasant experience, will gladly go back the next time I crave french food.

Reliable Hot Pot Place
Submitted Monday, October 5, 2009 - 1:06am [Dine in]

It was my dad's birthday and he wanted to eat hot pot. We made a reservation and was honored when we arrived. We find the service here much better than the other hot pot place on the same street. Food was great, selection was decent; we particularly enjoyed the shrimp and deep fried fish skin. We got everything we ordered and enjoyed the meal thoroughly. Service was attentive and servers were accommodating when we asked for extra sauce, napkins and glasses.
Our server noticed a $0.50 charge on our bill and admitted it was their error before we even noticed it! She quickly corrected the mistake and brought us a new bill. Although it was only $0.50, it was the honesty and thought that we really appreciated.

Overall, a great, reliable place to go for hot pot. We will gladly return.

Tsui Woo Seafood RestaurantNanaimo Street, Vancouver
Second Time - Still the Same
Submitted Monday, October 5, 2009 - 12:58am [Dine in]

Our first visit to Tsui Woo was last year and decided to go back again today as our regular dim sum place is temporarily closed. The order sheet looked pretty good with plenty of selection at $2.5 each. We ordered 14 items for the five of us, and everyone left with a full stomach. However, the quality of food was only okay - nothing compared to our usual dim sum restaurant. The Shrimp dumplings were small and didn't taste very fresh. The worst dish was probably the deep fried tofu - they came soft on the outside instead of crispy and had cheap seasoning salt all over. We found the food quite bland and boring.
Service was okay, servers came by frequently to fill our tea pots and bill was presented quickly when requested.
Parking can get difficult as there is only a small parking lot in front of the restaurant, but there is plenty of street parking available in the neighborhood.
Overall, the experience was just okay and I think it'll be at least another year before we return.

Excellent Coffee - Mediocre Food
Submitted Thursday, September 17, 2009 - 2:05am [Dine in]

I've been visiting Artigiano's different locations for a few years and have always enjoyed their coffee. Recently they have started offering hot breakfast items at this location, so I went today with a coworker hoping for a good brunch.

I had the Scramble Eggs breakfast combo with Sausage and sauteed potatoes - it was disappointing. Two of my coworkers kept raving about their breakfast experiences there and I had rather high expectations. The best part of the meal was the potatoes - which they only offered four pieces on a big plate. The eggs were overdone and the sausage had a weird sour taste. After tax the breakfast was over $10 and I didn't find that good value at all. The plate was big but once again, the food portions were small. I went with one of the two coworkers who had been raving about the food and she was disappointed too. According to her, her first experience was excellent with much larger portions.

I will not be ordering their breakfast again but they will probably remain as my favorite coffee place in downtown.

Sushi Garden4635 Kingsway, Burnaby
Will not return
Submitted Sunday, September 13, 2009 - 4:04am [Dine in]

I've been to Sushi Garden more than ten times and it just gets worse every time. The last time I went was a week ago when I was craving Japanese food. There is always a line up at dinner time and the ambiance is rather poor. Not just the decorations but also the cleanliness - the place is very dirty with lots of dust everywhere and the tables are never properly cleaned.

My first few visits were actually rather pleasant as the prices seemed extremely reasonable for the big portions they served. However, not only did their service get worse every time, their quality of food declined significantly as well. On my last visit I ordered salmon and tuna sashimi that was gross. Especially the tuna - I eat tuna all the time and what I had last time was absolutely disgusting. It was very fishy and tasted odd. I could barely make myself finish them but I still did because I really didn't want to waste food. That was possibly the worst tuna I've ever had.

I still rate the food as two stars because prior to my last visit, food did taste decent. Maybe it was a one-time mistake but I don't think I will ever go to Sushi Garden again. There are so many other options and although the portions are big, if that means I have to sacrifice quality, I'd rather pay more for an enjoyable meal. I don't think it is worth my time to wait in line when food is mediocre and service is so unwelcoming.

Royal Thai Restaurant770 Bute Street, Vancouver
Slow service with okay thai food
Submitted Sunday, September 13, 2009 - 3:49am [Dine in]

I've been to Royal Thai several times with different friends / family members. All experiences have been okay - nothing memorable. We chose this place mainly for the location. It is very convenient if you are shopping on Robson Street and their lunch specials are reasonably priced. The value rating is only referring to lunch - I have never been for dinner.

Their food is not authentic Thai but the flavors are alright. The portions are decent and I finished my meal happily every time. Their decor is very simple and the place is rather small. You can tell they have stopped putting effort in improving their food, service and ambiance. The place has been around for a while and they do have a steady clientele at lunch hour. Not sure about dinner though as the prices seem a bit high for chinese thai food.

Service has never been great, but I love the fact that they allow you to make substitutions even for the cheap lunch combos.

Highly Recommended!
Submitted Sunday, September 13, 2009 - 3:31am [Dine in]

I've visited the Wildflower on three different occasions when I visited Whistler. The first time I had a very delightful meal with several friends, when we all tried each other's dishes and left satisfied. Our server was extremely attentive and professional. We all enjoyed ourselves very much.

The second time I went for dinner again with my boyfriend and loved our food. My steak was cooked to perfection and I enjoyed every bite of it. As a matter of fact, it was so good that my boyfriend kept stealing food from my plate as he couldn't get enough of that delectable taste!

Third time we went for the breakfast buffet and got a table in their lovely patio. The atmosphere was so nice that we almost didn't want to leave! The variety of food was a bit lacking considering the high prices charged; however, the freshness of food, friendly service as well as welcoming atmosphere brought yet another memorable experience.

Pittsburg has gone downhill
Submitted Sunday, September 13, 2009 - 3:19am [Dine in]

I used to frequent this restaurant all the time for their reasonable prices and delicious food. However, their food has definitely gone downhill and I actually try to avoid going there as much as I can now. They increased the prices but forgot to also improve quality of food. I used to order their curry dishes all the time but after several disappointments, I started ordering other dishes such as pastas and sandwiches. Was not impressed the last few times I was there - hence I have stopped going. One dish that I found decent was the Hainan chicken, everything else disappointed.

Too bad as this restaurant has so much potential, nicely decorated and conveniently situated inside the busy Crystal Mall. Many of friends who used to frequent the place have stopped visiting as well, for their higher prices and lower food quality compared to the past.

One of my favorite HK style restaurants
Submitted Thursday, September 10, 2009 - 2:49am [Dine in]

I am a regular of this restaurant for three major reasons:

1. Prices are very reasonable
2. Food is always above average compared to other similar restaurants
3. Convenient location with a large parking lot

On days when I have school in Richmond, I usually come here for a quick meal. Food is always served fast, prices are great for the portions you get, nothing fancy or pretentious, nice, easy and quick.

I do find certain dishes to be a bit on the oily side but as long as you try to order the healthier options, you are okay.

Enjoyable experience
Submitted Thursday, September 10, 2009 - 2:45am [Dine in]

Had afternoon tea with a friend in the Empress Room last year in the summer. The place was rather empty but the decor was beautiful. My friend from Asia was very pleased with the atmosphere, spent the whole hour appreciating the decor in the room as well as the beautiful view out the window. Our server wasn't particularly attentive or helpful; however, we were quite happy to be left alone.

The pastries were the ordinary pastries one would expect for afternoon tea. Nothing spectacular. It was the view and the atmosphere that sell this place, certainly not the pastries / tea.

Not a bad choice for a special occasion.

Pleasant Surprise!
Submitted Thursday, September 10, 2009 - 2:38am [Dine in]

Went to Denny's for a late meal after driving around in the area and realizing nothing was still open except for Denny's. The parkade in the back was very dark and didn't seem very safe. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a very friendly manager who took us to a booth. The decor and atmosphere was nothing to write home about, but the service and food both pleasantly surprised us that evening.

Our server was a very pleasant lady who was genuine and attentive. We ordered a burger and a sandwich, which took a while to arrive. As we were wondering what was going on with our order, the server came to notify us that they had run out of burger buns and the manager had gone out to try and buy some. It was rather late (close to midnight) and we appreciated their effort. We agreed to having bread instead so we could start enjoying the food sooner. However, the manager came back and so we got the burger a couple of minutes later. My beloved dinner companion said the burger was "soooo good", claiming it to be one of the best he's ever tasted. (and he's a burger fan!) I tried a bite and it was very delicious, juicy and fresh. My sandwich was very tasty as well, everything tasted very fresh, even the fries.

Overall, we were very pleased with the quality of food and service that evening. Certainly not what we were expecting from a Denny's.

Japa DogCorner of Burrard and Smithe, Vancouver
Nothing Special
Submitted Thursday, September 10, 2009 - 1:10am [Dine in]

Everyone's been talking about this Japa Dog booth on Burrard so we decided to check it out two weeks ago. There was a line up so the booth was easy to locate. We found the atmosphere quite nice as everyone was cheerful and they all seemed happy to be in line for a hot dog. People were eating near the booth and it was quite a scene. The hot dog we had was nothing out of the ordinary, except there was lots of mayo and seaweed. I personally think it's the popularity that's attracting people to this place, not the food. The hot dog was $7 and again, aside from the mayo and seaweed, I didn't find it very special at all.
Now that the curiosity is gone, I don't see a reason to visit this place again any time soon.

Cute little place - okay food
Submitted Tuesday, September 8, 2009 - 12:14am [Dine in]

This place has been constantly recommended to me by coworkers and friends, and as we were looking for a good breakfast place in downtown on a holiday, I thought we could give Scoozi's a try.

I was pleasantly surprised by the cute decor as soon as I walked in - very cozy, old-school and welcoming. The server was attentive but somewhat robotic, service wasn't very genuine at all. Prices are on the high side compared to other breakfast places, $2.6 for a cup of coffee that was not refilled, $13 for salmon eggs benedict that came with a three slices of potatoes. The bill for the two of us came to $32 and considering we weren't very full nor pleased with the taste of our food, the value just wasn't really there. However, food did come out quick enough despite the restaurant was about 80% full, and the ingredients tasted fresh - just not delicious enough.

I'd say the part that I enjoyed the most was the atmosphere - not very clean yet very cozy.

Incredible Cakes!
Submitted Monday, August 31, 2009 - 1:55am [Dine in]

Was looking for a good bakery shop for a birthday cake for my brother, and this one was highly recommended. Although the location isn't the best, I have to say their cakes are among one of the best I have ever had.

We bought a whole dark chocolate mousse cake for my brother, and four slices of various different cakes to try. All four slices were wonderful, particularly the hazelnut one which was just right - not too sweet, with the perfect texture.

My brother was so pleased with the cake that he said it was the best dark chocolate mousse cake he has ever had. It was such great value as well, the five of us each had two slices of the cake and it was only $27. This is now my new favorite bakery!

Extremely poor service
Submitted Monday, August 24, 2009 - 12:49am [Dine in]

I used to be a regular of this restaurant but stopped going after several disappointing experiences. The worst one was the last time we went which was about two months ago, when the potatoes in our curry beef brisket rice had obviously gone bad. They tasted funny with a very unappetizing smell. We had always ordered this dish on our every visit so we knew how they were supposed to taste. Reported to the waitress, who ignored our concern by saying "really?" and walking away. We then tried to address the issue to the owner / manager politely. He became angry and said the potatoes were completely fine and that was the right taste. For our health, we ended up leaving the whole plate untouched.
The entire family was choked by the way we were treated, and all agreed that the owner was extremely unreasonable and rude. He made us look like scammers who were trying to get a free meal......a meal that was $7...Unbelievable!
We will never go back to this restaurant again.

Submitted Friday, August 21, 2009 - 1:38am [Dine in]

Been wanting to visit this place after reading all the reviews on website, finally had the opportunity tonight when we were in the area and oh were we pleased!

It was a late dinner for us at almost 10pm and the place was nearly empty. We got a window seat and were pleasantly surprised by the very interesting "August Specials" menu. Everything looked so good and the prices were so reasonable! I had the Saba Rice set with Miso soup and Sunomono, while my boyfriend ordered his favorite - Negitoro Don. As we were very hungry, we also ordered a sardine roll and a chopped scallop roll. Everything was amazing! From the sides to the mains, and even the green tea, everything tasted exceptional, and most importantly, extremely fresh. Our server was very polite and attentive, she even opened the door for us when we left! Our bill came to just over $30, and don't forget we had plenty of food! Both of us were stuffed when we walked out, and were greatly impressed by the food and the service at Barefoot.

Such a nice place, we'll definitely be back!

All my experiences there have been delightful, especially the lunch ones. Their Eggs Benedict is hands down the best I've ever had in Vancouver. Fresh ingredients, cooked to perfection every single time. I've gone many different parties and we have never been disappointed. Wonderful place, highly recommended.

Has gone downhill
Submitted Saturday, August 1, 2009 - 10:23pm [Dine in]

I used to frequent Noodle Box a lot as the food was tasty and service was consistent. The place is nicely decorated and the location is great for a decent meal before / after shopping on 4th.

However, the quality of food has gone downhill rather dramatically in the past year. On my previous few visits, the food was consistently too salty and oily. I felt a bit sick and very thirsty after every time. The service is still decent; but for the quality of food they serve, the prices are too high.

I am asian myself and I find their "asian-inspired" food quite off from authentic asian food. It's sad I can't say it's a favorite anymore and have stopped recommending it to friends.
