John's Greek Taverna7218 King George Blvd, #123, Surrey
Newton has Greek Food?
Submitted Tuesday, October 5, 2010 - 11:32pm [Dine in]

Bubu and I went to John's Greek Taverna today around 4/5 pm. It was almost empty, except for one other couple there. The place had a nice warm feel to it, it was old looking but personally I think it added some character to the venue. They played Greek music, and the laminated place mats had pictures and information on Greece. They were definitely ancient looking, but I didn't mind.

Their menu had so much selection. Other than Greek food, there was pasta, and pizza as well. But the majority of the menu had items $14+. We didn't want to spend that much so we decided to order the Calamari Seafood Special and split it. To split a meal you have to pay $3.95 more, this is because they will put the meal on two separate plates add more food to feed two people.

The calamari was nice and crispy, but I found it hard to taste the squid. The sauce that accompanies the calamari had a nice taste, but then you could not taste the squid at all. The rice was okay to me, but the potato was good. But then again it was just a potato. The meal also came with a Greek salad, nothing wrong there. The pita bread however, I could not say was pita bread. The colour and texture were very off. It was more like a soft airy flattened breakfast bun to me.

Overall our early dinner went well. We both felt full after eating everything and had a decent Greek meal too. Our waitress, Gloria was very polite and friendly the whole time. Every so often she would ask us how our food was. When we got the bill we were given some candies and also some pens that advertise their restaurant. That was nice. One thing I have to add is that the other staff was also present at the time. We were seated next to their 'staff area'? But they didn't so much as smile at us. When we left it was only Gloria who said bye and thank you as well. Oh well? I might be back if I'm craving Greek food in Newton. =)

We ate here during lunch, at that time there were some people but not very many. The interior was very casual, not the usual fancy Chinese decor but clean none the less. The store has many windows, but the view is only of the parking lot. The seats are very spacious and comfy, it even has arm-rests.

The menu here has a lot of variety, but very vague with descriptions. Lots to choose from either Chinese or Canadian food (burgers, sandwiches, etc). There were also a few hot pot selections. Prices vary from around $7-12 but the servings are very generous, you can order one dish to share between two people. The food itself is delicious, and prepared quickly. Some dishes will be served on a sizzling plate. The only thing is tea costs about $1 a pot, which is uncommon for Chinese restaurants.

Our server was very polite, checked in to see how we were doing every once in a while, and kind enough to pack our left-overs for us. The bill came with fortune cookies =)

If you're looking for a good Chinese restaurant in the area, this is it.

Top Gun Sushi At The Quay810 Quayside Drive, #230, New Westminster
A Family Favourite!

For my family that is...

My family goes here for lunch when we have guests that are craving sushi. The lunch AYCE is only about $12 which is spectacular for the amount of food you could order. Though the menu is typical of a Japanese AYCE, the food comes fast and it's pretty good. I've always experienced great service when coming here, our table was constantly being cleared so it was easy to re-order when we needed to.

The ambiance is fantastic, especially the view. After eating you can walk around The Quay to get a load off. The restaurant is quite nice itself. Clean, spacious, and might I say a tad bit fancy? Good sushi, good price I recommend this place to people who want exactly that.

PS. For the first-timers looking for a way in, the entrance is outside. There are winding stairs leading up to the second floor.

What a Nice Surprise
Submitted Wednesday, October 7, 2009 - 12:43am [Dine in]

I held a surprise birthday party here for my friend. It was easy to plan, just printed out their menu from their website took down orders, and came in early to give it to the cook. An assortment of food was ordered that day, everyone said theirs was delicious, even some first timers of Japanese cuisine. I would only suggest tasting the sauce for the salad before dumping it on there. It had a bold taste, but I've learned to like it now.

The service was just amazing. They let us decorate the booth we ate in with balloons. They also let us bring our own cake, put it in the fridge, and provided little plates and forks for us to eat. The waitresses were nice, a bit quiet but polite. We also got a bit loud, and some balloons were popped, but we heard no complaints from the restaurant.

The place wasn't pricey, and it was different from most. They had sit down tables, and the booths had the traditional kind where you kneel. The waitresses were wearing kimonos and wooden sandals, it really added to the Japanese feel of the place. It's only the outside that's a bit plain and bothersome because of it's surroundings.

I'd definitely recommend this place, doesn't really make a difference to me. If you're gonna have a party, have it here =)

I go here with my hubby for their bento boxes. Typical but still good. It always smells good walking by there. I also find that when you go there you get sushi on the house before your order arrives, kind of like a free appetizer. I've only received "volcano rolls" so far, I don't know if they give anything else.

Service is okay. The waitress there one time kept coming to our table and asking us how we were though. It was a bit over done as far as service goes.

Value is pretty good. Around $10 for a filling meal. The place is also very nice, with their little Japanese showcase. There is also a closed off room for a large group. They play all sorts of music, mostly Korean pop, but the last time we were there they played some English songs too.

I would recommend this place, it's not pricey and conveniently placed across the mall.

The sushi at Sushiteria is really tasty. My hubby and I go there often to eat. We get different party trays each time to share, and all have been great. The only thing was the sashimi was a bit too cold for us to enjoy. (Then again it was a cold day)

The service is outstanding. Food comes pretty quickly. The chef and waiter are always nice and cheery when we go there. One time we forgot to tip, we came back but there was no hard feelings (of course we doubled the tip). There was also an incident where a kid spilled his miso soup by accident, and they replaced it - no problem. The only thing is the drinks are all self-serve. Drinks in a can and tea in a dispenser. I find this quite nice actually, I don't feel like a pig when I keep getting more tea.

Overall value is not hard on the pockets for real good sushi. The place is kind of small, but cozy and warm. Of course, if you just want to pig out and stuff your face, you can't beat all you can eat sushi.
